Dear Wimborne, Merley & Colehill residents, The wonderful summer weather really did spoil us this year didn’t it! The children are now back to school and we are starting to look forward to those golden autumn leaves brightening our skies. Personally, I love our British changing seasons. Places look different at different times of year, so it is a good excuse to re-visit some of our favourite spots. Nellie would say that! Get out and live life, she would exclaim. On that note the story this month is a tribute to her. We have had five fabulous years and unfortunate events have led to what you will read about. We do hope you have enjoyed her exploits each month. We look forward to welcoming Daichi, the Dashing Dude! Understanding Hearing Loss The ear is made up of three parts. The outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. Sound is received by the outer ear and is channelled through the ear canal to the ear drum and the middle ear. The sound causes the ear drum to vibrate and results in the tiny bones in the middle ear tapping against each other, this vibration is transferred to the 30,000 tiny hair cells in the inner ear. Types of hearing loss 1. Conductive hearing loss: sound is blocked in the outer or middle ear. News from Westminster Before the summer, I hosted some work experience students – both in London and in Dorset. I often have requests from young people wanting to see what it is like working in a Parliamentary office. Due to the complex working patterns of an MP, it is much better - and more enjoyable all round - to host a group of students at the same time. It is, of course, the right thing to do to offer work experience. But it is also clear, from my work as chairman of the All Party parliamentary group on Youth Employment, that young people who participate in work experience have the important opportunity to see first hand how the skills and knowledge they are developing at school can be transferred into the work place. I try and arrange a varied programme of activities which are both interesting and reflect the types of work my staff do on a regular basis. This might involve some of the more mundane administrative tasks like putting hundreds of letters into envelopes, as well as the highlights! It might also involve more complex challenges. Young people are often very media savvy, so this time I asked the students to make suggestions for my website and to draft articles and updates for social media as well. A great deal of correspondence sent to me from constituents is confidential and sensitive, and of its nature it cannot be shared with the students. But they were asked to research and draft answers to more simple casework queries, the responses to which can be found on my website. In the past I have asked students to research and prepare for a debate on a topic of their interest – often this tends to be about university tuition fees, or changes to the voting age. This time they debated whether the government should legislate more to protect children and young people online. It is always a lively debate! The students also accompanied me to several places in the constituency where I was holding street surgeries.
These offer local residents the chance to stop and chat about issues of concern, without the need for an appointment. The students were able to see how an MP interacts with the public, and also make notes for any necessary follow up. Working for a Member of Parliament is not always as exciting as some people might think, and a great deal of time is spent on administrative tasks. But I know from my staff that being involved in politics, and being able to help make a difference to people’s lives on a day to day basis, is particularly rewarding. My team are absolutely invaluable to my work as an MP, without whom I could not do the job that I do. Talking about Wildlife...
The dragon of the skies… No summer is complete without experiencing the sights and sounds of a dragonfly as it hunts over a nearby pond. Agile and colourful, dragonflies are a joy to watch with their aerial manoeuvres rivalling the fastest military aircraft as they duck and turn in pursuit of prey, or narrowly avoid the clutches of hungry hobbies. These adaptable insects lord over wetlands, moorland and even woodland glades, feeding on flies, midges and even each other. If you thought butterflies were the only insects worth a second glance, these multi-coloured, iridescent predators demand appreciation too. In addition to occasional visitors from continental Europe, there are 17 species of damselfly and 23 species of dragonfly resident in the UK. They are found in almost every habitat, bringing a splash of colour to the landscape just as the wildflowers and butterflies are winding down – so now is the perfect time to spot them! This year in Dorset we’ve been lucky enough to witness the arrival of the Southern Migrant Hawker dragonfly, which is usually found in warmer climes. Spotted in Lytchett Heath in east Dorset, this is a first recording for the county, most likely due to the prolonged period of warm weather this summer. than the more common migrant hawker, and is often called the blue-eye hawker, on account of its blue eyes. The migrant hawker dragonfly is one of the most exciting dragonflies to spot, and you can often find them hunting along sheltered hedgerows in August and September. Another impressive dragonfly you may see this year is the emperor dragonfly, which is a characteristic dragonfly of new ponds, where for the first few years, their larvae may be extremely common. The males are pale blue, with an applegreen throat and a black stripe running the length of the body. Dragonflies are most active in warm and sunny conditions and are most commonly found near water, but several species also travel to feed in gardens, fields and woodland edges. The 2018 Bournemouth & Poole Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride Motorcyclists unite globally as The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride shines the spotlight on men’s health in over 650 cities across 95 countries on Sunday September 30th. With close to 1 million men losing their lives annually from suicide and prostate cancer, the annual event is calling on the community to stop men dying too young. Over 120,000 men and women will dress in their finest attire and ride their vintage and classic styled motorcycles worldwide, to raise funds and awareness to prostate cancer and mental health on behalf of official charity partner, The Movember Foundation. Founded in 2012 by Mark Hawwa, Sydney Australia, The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride has raised over $13M USD for men’s health, with a goal of adding a further $6M USD to the cause throughout the 2018 fundraising campaign. Last year the our ride raised over £23,000 and this year we aim to raise over £30,000.
Bournemouth and Poole’s Distinguished Gentlefolk will once again be taking part with over 500 riders donning their cravats, tweaking their moustaches, pressing their tweeds and polishing their classic and vintage motorcycles to ride for men’s health. The ride will start at Poole Quay and will finish at Bournemouth School where there will be an event to celebrate the completion of the ride. Why not get involved? Annual Honey Show 2018 Come along to this years Honey Show on Saturday 10th November at St Catherine’s Hill Community Hall. Entry is free and they will be lots to see, do, eat and buy with some new exciting classes added to this years show. Beekeeping has become ever-more popular in the UK over the past few years with lots of press around the decrees in numbers of bees. And now is a great time to come and support local Beekeeping Association. The Bournemouth and Dorset South BeeKeeper’s Association has existed since 2008 and its members from a group of friendly people who have an interest in bees. The aim of the Association is to promote beekeeping, encourage new beekeepers an raise the awareness of the importance of bees in the natural world. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Many of us have come to enjoy Nellie’s exploits over the years, 5 good years in fact. Playful in her mature fun-loving way, always ready to go somewhere new and have a go. She would laugh at herself with her long black skirts to cover up her rather large thighs and a silver grin that would bring a smile to everyone’s face. Family fun, excursions, exploring and seeing the bright side of life have been her passion. I did say the journey was interesting at the end of last month, so are you ready? Driving back from Wales… Well, we had literally just passed the “Welcome to England” sign, travelling at a mere 20 miles an hour when there was a sudden bang. We lurched forward. I yelled. We were hit again. The young girl in the car behind Nellie failed to stop, she just kept going. I yelled for a second time. Nellie was badly hit and I knew instantly she would not be repaired. The girl’s car was totally ruined, the engine would not start at all. After the police came to help, Nellie limped to the nearest service station and unfortunately on the back of a truck Nellie was taken to the “old van’s home”. It was very sad. If I say anymore we will all cry, and that is not ‘our Nellie’. No, Nellie is not one to give up easily and she has a Grandson in Japan who is coming over to replace her fun and frolics here on the South Coast. Nellie will be keeping a close eye on him of course because from what I hear ‘Daichi, The Dashing Dude’ as he is known (and for good reason), is a bit of a handful. Despite his Japanese upbringing, he has somewhat of an ‘Italian’ persona and likes the lady cars. Being the personality he is, he is having a ‘makeover’ (can you believe
Nellie with the Cerne Abbas Giant it?) before he arrives here in Dorset. Goodness knows how we will cope, but I am sure we will manage somehow. It was Nellie’s idea and you know what these stubborn older ladies can be like! When we tried to argue we just saw ‘the look’ from those headlights and we decided it was best to let her be right. We are all for an easy life. Daichi, which means ‘first grandson’ in Japanese, is taking his time (there is a lot of makeover going on) and will be with us in a couple of months. In the meantime we will take a look back at Nellie’s Golden Years… It all started in 2013. Stephen’s old car had finally given up and I had this idea to get a campervan to help Stephen not only carry all of out thousands of magazines each month, but also give us some family fun with a good excuse to get out and about. Having a young, very active boy of nine at the time, and being a somewhat ‘older Mum’, having the van meant we could all enjoy a day out. After all, Nellie’s whistling kettle satisfied my more relaxed way of life and the outdoor life let Hayden run around to his heart’s content. Stephen had the

29 best of both worlds. It got both of them off the computer too! As soon as we bought Nellie, she attracted attention. Five years ago there were less van’s like her on our English roads and the dark glass, with her roof up, her long black skirts and her silver smile seemed to draw people in. They were curious. That’s what gave me the idea to characterise her and write about where she took us. It was all a bit of fun and would hopefully make others smile. Her very first trip in June ’13 was to Cerne Abbas to see the naked Giant on the hill. Knowing Nellie now, some may see why that might be, she was always a bit cheeky! One of our favourite trips was to the Isle of Wight. Mum, Dad my sister, her husband and the three of us all went in convoy. Nellie was so excited she got on the earlier ferry and left my sister and brother-in law in ‘Lady J’ standing, waving, on the quay! We all met up again and had a fabulous week exploring the whole island. Fishing for the boys and Liz Earle’s Beauty Salon for us girls. We came out smelling better than the boys did, Nellie will tell you! Another great stay was had at Norden Farm near Corfe Castle. Fields, the wonderful sounds of our English birds, fishing again, fish and chips in Swanage, a picnic by the River at Wareham, what more can you want? Nellie took us to Cornwall last summer where Hayden competed in

Nellie ‘unpacked’ ready for the beach the Surf Life Saving Championships (I did say he was active didn’ t I?) where we got thoroughly rained on and had to buy a new awning. Camping at it’s best…? Following that was a wedding in Hull, so Nellie was packed with wellies, wetsuits and surf boards, next to wedding outfits, dainty shoes and a fascinator! All good fun and just shows how versatile Nellie really was. Ever ready, with a big silvery grin, for any occasion. If you had a favourite story please let us know. Phone, write or email. The annual event is held for past team members of Hall & Woodhouse (H&W) who have worked continuously for the company for more than 15 years. GUIDE Container Shrubs
Late summer to autumn is the main period for planting shrubs in containers, although container grown shrubs can be put into ornamental pots at almost any time.
based compost as shrubs are likely to stay in their containers for a few years and any grown in peat based compost will need frequent feeding and will dry out more quickly than loam based ones.
Choose a container that is the right size for the shrub. If the container has been previously used, scrub its inside surfaces thoroughly.
However, you should use ericaceous compost for lime haters such as rhododendrons, pieris, camellia, conifers and heathers.
Put heavy containers into position before planting up, or risk a slipped disc! Stand the container on blocks or bricks to allow free drainage. Put broken crocks over the drainage holes and if you have something like coarse gravel put a 1 inch layer to help with drainage. Place some compost next and then arrange the plant centrally. Pack more compost round the edges making sure there are no air pockets and allow at least 10 cms below the rim to allow for watering and mulching. A loam based compost, such as ‘nutrient rich’ is better than a peat

Wines: A Good Choice - Rosé Rosé wines are very popular for drinking in the summer months. Now, with several styles being available, made utilising a wide variety of grapes, they can be enjoyed throughout the full year. Popularity speaks for itself, as many countries, worldwide, now produce these wines, which incorporate some of their colour from the grape skins. Adding colour to a dining table and al fresco, for example, as well as making fabulous apéritifs, these wines are a great choice. Indeed, sophistication comes to mind, when the pink wines are around.
La Vieille Ferme Rosé (France) is a very popular (dry) wine. I find this has pleasant, light-red fruits for the bouquet and most pleasing mouthfeel, which continues on, to the palate sensation. Pairs well with grilled meats, salads and a lot of cuisine. Coeur de Cardeline (France) is a further, often-selected, production. This Côtes de Provence pale-pink pleaser exudes a bouquet of summer fruits, which enticingly leads to the mouth’s pleasures. The excellent flavours continue to the palate, for a most satisfying finish. Grilled meats, fish, pasta and salads, match very well with this wine. Arniston Bay Rosé (South Africa) is a Fairtrade production which graces many dining tables. The name is a reference to the blue skies, wonderful beaches and the fishing village. Again, the bouquet pleases, very well and the mouthfeel follows, with red berry flavours, plus a positive, memorable finish. Great to accompany numerous dishes of cuisine. These are just a selection. Each to their own and we all have our preferences – whether red, white, sparkling or other. Take pleasure in finding your favourites. I located these wines at Co-op stores. Having been a customer of the Co-op for many years, I have noticed an increase in the variety of household goods and foods, as time progresses. With the choices of wines, spirits, beers and other beverages available, the Co-op, I consider, is most worthwhile visiting. KINGSTON FESTIVAL WEEK 16th – 23rd September - Music, Flowers, Crafts This year St James’ Church in the village of Kingston is holding several events during the third week of September, aiming to bring church and community together. The week will start on Sunday 16th September with a Quarter Peal of the 10 bells, coordinated by Mike Pitman, our Tower Captain, who will be joined by Bell ringers from across the area. They will be starting at about 1.30. There will then be a Music Afternoon from 2.30pm til 4.30pm in the Church, where people can come and listen to Organ Music played by Roderick Raley while enjoying a relaxing cup of tea and afternoon refreshments. There will also be an exhibition of photographs by Terry Hardy who lives in the village. Hopefully we can also offer visits to the tower if weather permits during the afternoon. On Tuesday 18th September at 2.30pm we have Peter and Hazel Hartle of Purbeck Ice Cream speaking about their first 30 years of Purbeck Ice Cream. They have been building up their business from their Kingston-based farm at Lower Scoles and will give a talk about how the well-known brand first began and developed over the years. Please do reserve a seat for this event as we need an idea how many are coming (judyforgan@hotmail.co.uk). On Wednesday 19th September at 2.00pm Harmony Rocks, a local choir of ladies, will bring a repertoire of popular classics, under the direction of Annie Campbell. Tea and cakes will be served during the interval. Tickets are not essential but you may like to reserve a seat. On Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd September our third Flowers, Crafts
and Music Festival will take place with arrangements around the theme ‘Water of Life’. The Church will be open for viewing and refreshments from 10am until 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday. People from across the new Benefice of St Aldhelm have been involved in putting this together, with supporters helping from Kimmeridge, Corfe Castle and Church Knowle, as well as Langton and Worth Matravers. We are very grateful to all who are contributing towards what will be a very special week. The Festival Week will close with an informal Songs of Praise Service ‘Hymns with Pimms’ from about 3.15pm. Please come and support some or all of the events, which help to bring the wider community and church together. The Bournemouth Marathon starts in Kings Park before making it’s way down onto the seafront. You continue to take in the beautiful coastal views as you hit mile 9 on the coastal marathon route. Standing mid way between Poole Harbour and Hurst Spit, Hengistbury Head forms the main division between Poole and Christchurch bays. You then turn west and at mile 14 you can see the famous Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum which is situated on Bournemouth’s stunning cliff-top, over looking the sea. You then continue to run along the seafront, taking in the breathtaking Boscombe Pier, at mile 12 & 16. As you continue your run west towards Lower Gardens at mile 18, you then head towards Poole’s Natural Harbour which is the largest in Europe before taking in the last few miles along the stunning sea front and finishing in Lower Gardens. Purbeck Film Festival The Purbeck Film Festival is the longest running rural film festival in the UK, supported by over 5,000 people annually. Tastes so good... TOMATO SOUP
As the weather turns slightly colder as we venture into Autumn, there is nothing more perfect than a warming tomato soup. You can add croutons to give it an extra crunch or you can even top it off with basil leaves if you want to dress it up.
Serves 4 Ingredients: 1 tbsp. butter 2 garlic cloves 3 x 400g cans plum tomatoes 500ml vegetable stock 5 soft sun dried tomatoes in oil 1tsp. sugar 125g pot fresh basil pesto 142ml pot soured cream
Equipment: Large pan Method: In a large plan, heat 1 tbsp. of butter (or oil if you prefer) and then crush the garlic cloves and add to the pan. Do this on a low heat for roughly 3 minutes until the garlic has softened. Then, add the chopped tomatoes and the canned tomatoes. Once you have done this, add the sugar, stock and seasoning. Turn up the heat and bring the soup mixture to a simmer. Let it simmer for 10 minutes until the tomatoes have broken down then take off the heat. With a stick blender, whizz the whole mixture together. Add half the sour cream and continue to use to stick blender. Make sure to taste as you go to adjust the seasoning or alternatively add more sugar if you prefer. When it is all blended, serve the soup into bowls. You can either add more sour cream into the bowl or add some pesto on top.
