Wimborne in Bloom duck race raises over £1 700 for In Bloom Funds The 21st Wimborne in Bloom August Bank Holiday Weekend Duck Race has raised over £1,700 towards ‘In Bloom’ funds. This was the first fundraising event which we have been able to hold since March 2020 due to the Corona Virus Pandemic and is a most welcome contribution to our somewhat depleted funds.

The Mayor of Wimborne Minster, Cllr Mrs Kelly Webb, the Deputy Mayor Cllr Mrs Carol Butter and the Town Crier Chris Brown together with members of the Wimborne in Bloom Committee launched the Ducks into the River Allen by the Riverside Mews Café Bridge on the afternoon of Saturday 28th August. The ‘ducks’ made a quick dash down the river with the first duck crossing the finishing line behind the Rising Sun Public House in East Street in less than fifteen minutes.

Once again to meet the demand for tickets some of the ducks were ‘co-owned’ as it would have been impractical to increase beyond a thousand the number of ducks launched into the river. It meant that the prize money could be doubled as both owners would be eligible for the full value of all prizes. In the event two of the winning ducks were ‘co-owned’ and the full list of results is as follows:

It really was a happy event especially after the Pandemic Restrictions of the last 18 months. It was great to see all those smiling faces as people followed the race down the river trying to spot their 'duck'.

In addition to thanking the Co-Operative Supermarket, he also expressed thanks to the Slocock Trust for the use of the Bridge from which to launch the ducks and the Rising Sun for all their help both at the finishing line, the use of their garden area after the race and indeed for all the ‘ducks’ they sold beforehand.

1st Duck to cross the line was No: 694 and was co-owned by Sally Marley and four year old Charlie Buttler, who had been bought a 'duck' by his dad Kieran, the winners both won £50.

2nd Duck No: 878 was owned by Georgina Arnold who won £25: 3rd Duck No: 777 was owned by Nicole Stylianou who received £10, the 4th Duck No:148 was Co-owned by Janet Griffin and Peter Bunce who both received £5: 5th Duck No 915 was owned by Lynne Saunders who received £5 and the 6th Duck No: 850 was owned by Christine Clark who also received £5. Last Duck home No: 33 was Co-owned by Isla Bell, who had been bought a ‘duck’ by her mum Francesca who gave her money in place of the bottle of wine she would have won and Pam Dodd who received a bottle of wine. All those who won £5.00 kindly donated their winnings back to Wimborne in Bloom. All ducks had been pre-sold at £1 a

QUIRKY FACTS

by Mica Bale Is autumn in the air? Although some may be mourning the promise of heady summer days and snatched barbecues, others are longing for the crunch of leaves beneath their wellies and to see our county in all its seasonal beauty. To celebrate, here are five more quirky facts around Dorset!

1

Did you know that Dorset could well be home to the oldest surviving teddy bear museum in Britain?

With countless cuddly bears located in various domestic settings throughout the museum, the collection is home to bears that are more than 100 years old and also contain several big name and vintage bears including Winnie the Pooh, Paddington and Rupert Bear.

Remarkably, the first female architect to design a public building, came from Bournemouth! Elisabeth Scott was one of ten children who grew up in the Dorset town with a family heritage of architecture, most notably her great-uncles Sir George Gilbert Scott and George Frederick Bodley. Although it is the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre for which she is best known, even before this prominent work, Elisabeth was pioneering women in architecture.

In the 1910s, she was one of the first ever women to train at Architectural Association and from there, after gaining her diploma, she won a competition to design the theatre. In addition to that, Elisabeth went on to design the Pier Theatre in her hometown, with the intention of making the theatre appear as if guests were aboard an ocean liner.

Were you aware that it was a Dorset farmer who largely contributed to the control of smallpox, an illness which infected countless people. As a farmer, Benjamin Jesty had seen firsthand how workers who had come into contact with cowpox were later immune to smallpox. As a result, he was among the very first to introduce immunity by suggesting that people be infected with a small amount of cowpox in the hope of protecting them. However, unlike others such as Edward Jenner, Jetsy did not publicise his findings and is often forgotten as a key part of fighting smallpox in Britain.

Did you know that Cranbourne frequently welcomed royal visitors to its settlement? Favoured by the kings for its hunt, King John and later King Henry VIII were never far from an opportunity to hunt and as such, enjoyed coming to this slice of Dorset.

However the owner of Manston House, Barnabas Hanham, in the village of the same name, was met with a difficult situation following the deaths of each of his three wives. His second wife was buried locally however the area has a tendency to flood and, despite the waterproof burial place, the water was still an issue. Upon realising the problem, Hanham and his wife Edith promised each other that they should not be buried there.

Unfortunately before long Edith too passed away in 1876 and Hanham joined the fight to have cremation legalised. It was not until 1882 after years of campaigns and special permission from the authorities that Manston House, it is believed, became the first site of a legal cremation in Britain.

Big Ben Ben Fogle has made a name for himself across a variety of pursuits, though after a couple of years away from the cut and thrust of extreme adventure, the presenter, explorer and activist is summoning up the courage for a new challenge.

From Ben Fogle’s TV breakthrough on the BBC reality show Castaway 2000 – which saw him marooned on a remote Scottish island with 36 other people for a year – to competing in the six-day, 160-mile Marathon des Sables, to racing across the Antarctic Plateau to the South Pole, to ascending Mount Everest, Ben Fogle has never shied away from a challenge.

Despite living in London for most of his life, Fogle’s passion for the great outdoors has merged with a natural talent for broadcasting to present the 47-year-old with some true lifechanging experiences.

“I love one-off experiences; challenges that take me to mental and physical extremes, and that element of danger where you are pushing yourself to the edge,” he begins.

Asked to name the most

demanding, and Fogle will always point to those experiences at sea.

“It is just an alien environment. At any time, the end is right beneath you and around you,” he says.

“We are not designed as water creatures, so from kayaking to paddleboarding, long-distance swimming and rowing, it’s all a step into a world that isn’t designed for us, but that’s what becomes the great thrill.”

Indies, the pair completed the route in 49 days, 19 hours and eight minutes and were placed second in the pairs.

Fogle has a wholly modest assessment of his nautical feats, one that fails to take into account the greatest of his achievements on water.

That came between 2005 and 2006 when he competed in the Atlantic Rowing Race alongside former British Olympic rower and long-time friend James Cracknell. Travelling from the Canary Islands to the West

“The solitude is something I will always remember from that experience, being out on the high seas,” says Fogle. “I’ve always loved boats and have spent quite a bit of time on them over the years, but never like this of course. Two guys on their own in a small 20ft vessel with no support around them is pretty terrifying, especially when you capsize!”

Switching back to terra firma in TV series such as New Lives in the Wild, Storm City, Animal Clinic and Countrywise, as well as writing a series of travel, fiction and children’s books, Fogle has enjoyed the relative calm of home.

“Life is never dull, but I know I’ll always head back to the oceans,” he says. “They have a spirit all of their own and it’s the passion that draws us back. I love that feeling, so watch this space, I suppose!”

Talking about Wildlife...

Return of the birds Migration is a form of adaptation, vital to survival, as the changing seasons vary climate. As autumn approaches, we will start to see migrant birds returning to the UK, completing a journey of thousands of miles. What may look like chaos to us as we witness flocks of birds pass above, is actually part of a planned and calculated flight, unique to a species. Some will take a direct route, whereas others may prefer to follow a costal course.

In the South of the UK, we are lucky to be winter hosts to members of the thrush family such as fieldfares and redwings; two migrant birds that resemble eachother. Fieldfares are large and yellowbreasted, whereas Redwings can be identified by distinctive bursts of orangey-red under its wings.

Returning to nest in Iceland and Scandinavia around the end of March, these birds take this time to indulge in our berry-laden hedgerows, parks and woodlands. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Kingcombe Meadow Nature Reserve offers an excellent opportunity to see these migrating birds with its abundance of thick hedgerows. Fieldfares are sociable birds and can be seen in flocks of over 200.

these birds to take refuge, so don’t forget to top up your bird feeders or provide mealworms, cheese and suet to help keep feathered visitors energised this autumn and winter. Also look out for geese and wading birds will arrive in September and October in their hundreds and thousands. Dark-bellied brent geese flock to southern shores in early October.

The Chesil Beach Centre, over looking the Fleet Lagoon, is a great place to see these birds in action.

Holes Bay, Poole Harbour is the estuary (tidal mouth) of serval rivers and is therefore another perfect place to look out for migrating birds and some fantastic flocks can be seen late in the afternoon there. Coastal areas make excellent vantage points for a keen bird watcher, or even if you’re just starting out.

Tips for watching migrating birds: 1. Check tide times and take precautions with appropriate clothing.

2. Time your visits: geese are mostly likely to be seen at sunrise and sunset.

3. Keep a record of birds arriving and departing over the season.

4. Don’t forget to pack your binoculars!

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architect discusses sustainability and regeneration in our villages, towns and cities.

Right now there’s a whole band of architects who are really trying to evolve a style of architecture that combines futuristic with traditional – both ends of the spectrum. What we’re talking about here is incorporating natural materials with contemporary, so you get an airtight insulated building.

I am a huge advocate of eco buildings, and I think what a lot of people produce – and we have seen many over the years on Grand Designs – are incredible, intelligent, responsible; but you also have to approach the subject with realism. It may look great on the telly, yet as architects and housebuilders we’ve got to be prepared to admit the very extreme eco/traditional wooden, single grass-roofed, claywalled approach to building

I suppose the danger is that we side-line that activity and consider it irrelevant, whereas it’s actually a very important approach. It demonstrates an interest not just in tradition, but in low impact construction.

We all like bling and the government are going to carry on commissioning those big glass towers, but I like to think there will be greater learning and crossovers between disciplines.

What’s interesting is that proper innovation, regeneration and improvement rarely comes from the top down. Think of the strategies that local authorities put together, and they’re all quite generalist… ‘this is going to be a work area, here’s the bus route, and the houses

We need more ways of stimulating not just these local areas and communities, but the way we build those facilities too; we need to encourage people to take the power back, because authorities rarely seem to be able to make progressive decisions themselves.

The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van It has been said that happiness is a journey and not a destination. Well, I have to say that I am never happier than when Daichi is loaded up, and we begin our next adventure. That moment when we take our seats, buckle up, and say, “Ok, what we have forgotten we can either do without, or we will buy when we get there.”

Enough is enough, let’s get going! My ‘story’ this month is all about the journey, the route to and from our destination.

This time we went all the way up to Hull to collect my parents, to take my Dad fishing at Docklow Pools again, one of Dad’s favourite fishing haunts. Mum has dementia, which is very sad and not always easy to live with. Dad needs a break and what better than to take them away, get Mum some fresh air and give Dad some time to catch a few fish. His life-long passion.

The journey there took us over the Humber Bridge! I remember the building of this magnificent, single span construction when I was a girl. It was so exciting to see the massive layers of concrete starting to crawl, step by step, across the waters. I remember looking at it with awe, wondering how on earth it could stay up in the air like that. To me it was magical. You can see that I am no engineer… The Bridge opened in June 1981 and at the time it was the longest

are idyllic. I wrote about these last year and if you are a fisherman, or not, this is a wonderful place in Herefordshire to spend some quiet time surrounded by carp-filled lakes, luscious greenery and serene nature, in a quaint cabin.

Highly recommended.

As I explained at the beginning, this is all about the journey and making the space between one location and the final destination, part of the game. Going home these days can take us hours and hours!

Grandad and his passion! single span Bridge in the world! It was not until 1998 that a Japanese Bridge literally overtook it and now, 40 years later, it is the eleventh longest bridge of its type on this planet. I love driving over it and viewing the enormous River Humber with its brown murky waters flowing below.

To be honest, I don’t think this Bridge has ever really achieved the accolade it deserves.

Arriving in Hull is always a trip down memory lane for me and Daichi likes to skip his way there. Sometimes it is good to look back at ones’ roots, with a bit of nostalgia. After a good night’s sleep, we travelled over the Bridge again to see family who have moved over to East Halton in North Lincolnshire. Houses are so much cheaper here! It is so good to catch up, isn’t it. Long lost cousins, aunts, aunts’ children’s children, in fact five generations in all! The weather was warm, there was a beautiful garden and with a glass of wine in hand and a good old chat, what more can we want! Oh yes, we had quite a laugh too.

Daichi was part of the family and he loved it. His shiny white grin said it all.

Next stop was Crickley Hill nestled in the Cotswolds overlooking the Severn Vale with incredible views to the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains, including Robinswood Hill and May Hill. Just off the A417 in Gloucester, near Birdlip, this was a great find on a previous trip when I was hungry. It is glorious! The views are simply stunning. You can see for miles and gaze at the wonder of our beautiful countryside with a coffee and cake in hand. Owned by the National Trust as well as the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, it is a haven for birds, plants, insects and wildlife. The walks around this area are just spectacular. My Mum and Dad, who were travelling home with us, were amazed

Back on the road we travelled further South with our final stop at Avebury. Now in the county of Wiltshire with a Neolithic henge monument containing three huge stone circles. We had arrived in prehistoric Britain and a little further back in time, than my memories in Hull - Though getting out of bed in the mornings, it sometimes doesn’t feel so! Stones weighing around 40 tons still standing, majestically, thousands of years later. How incredible and inspiring is that? For contemporary Pagans this is a site of religious importance. What a fascinating place we live in. England is full of delights, sights, nature and indeed family. Daichi allowed us to do so much in just a week.

It was a long round trip from Dorset to East Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, to Herefordshire, back through Gloucestershire, into Wilshire and finally back to Dorset, with a stop in each place. The happiness was certainly in the journey. It was spent with family, making it all the more special.

Despite the challenges of dementia and ‘old age’ Daichi helped us create a journey packed with good times. Daichi does hope that when you travel you take time to visit along the route.

It extends the holiday and adds to all those wonderful memories of times spent together.

Where will Daichi take us next I wonder…?

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, as the nights draw in, Alan Titchmarsh explains how our gardens can still be a place of light, stimulation and decoration, and why now is the time to plan for brighter months ahead.

There is a saying: ‘gardeners learn to grow the things that want to grow’. In fact, the truth is everything wants to grow, it’s just up to us not to get in the way of that!

A big part of growing is preparation, and the best time to start planning for next year is right now; so really have a good look around your garden, do some research, and revel in the excitement of what it will look like in six months’ time.

The first things to consider are sunshine and shade; find out your plot’s capabilities and then you’ll know how you can grow all kind of things, be they in the soil, or in tubs, pots and troughs.

Consider size as well – do you have a ranging outdoor space or are you more limited? In

reality, it doesn’t matter – just because a space is small it doesn’t mean it’s hard to find things to grow in it. It’s easy to grow salads in a small space, tomatoes in summer, even

dwarf fruit in large pots. No, you won’t be self-sufficient, but you know that you grew it.

So being realistic about what’s in front of you, and making the best of it, is crucial.

The same goes for when the evenings begin to get darker so much earlier. Plants begin to wither, flowerful gardens sink into greens and browns, and there’s a feeling of packing up for winter, waiting for the spring for colours to begin to return.

One very obvious way to extend the days in your garden in autumn/winter is to add some subtle lighting. I don’t have much lighting in my garden but I try to use what I have to maximum effect. There are some up the sides of a path, and others that highlight things - I’ve got a tall hedge with urns in front with a couple of lights in them, and they look wonderful.

They go on in the evening for a couple of hours and then switch off at 10. I loved looking at those urns – it’s not over the top but it keeps the garden alive and to be enjoyed at night.

Dare I say it, it’s almost romantic, which is very ‘me’ of course!

News from Westminster

October is Conference season in

politics, and I will be heading to Manchester for the Conservative Party Conference. Constituents have already been in touch with me to request that I meet with various charities and organisations whilst I am there. One is the Alzheimer’s Society, who want to discuss the future of care, and find out more about dementia. My staff and I are all trained as Dementia Friends, and I will certainly visit the Alzheimer’s Society stand to find out more. The recent news about an increase in funding for social care is a very important one, meaning that fewer people will have to sell their homes to cover the costs of their care.

Another charity that many constituents have contacted me about are the Guide Dogs for the Blind. Their current campaign is about the issues arising from the use of e-scooters and electric bikes. There is currently a trial running in Poole of “Beryl” e-scooters. This trial is backed by the Department for Travel, as part of its Transforming Travel plans to reduce our reliance on cars. The scooters are speed-limited, and users have to have a full or provisional driving licence and be over 16. They are not allowed to be ridden on pavements or pedestrian areas, but may be used on roads and cycle paths. Part of the reason for the trials is to establish whether they are a safe and viable option for general use in the future. Whilst operators have to ensure that the e-scooters have a bell or horn to alert partially sighted and blind people to their presence, I will be interested to speak to the Guide Dogs charity about their views on these trials. It remains the law that privately owned e-scooters are not permitted on public roads, pavements and cycle paths, and I 52

know that Dorset police are being very pro-active about stopping riders, fining them and seizing their scooters.

I’m delighted that along with the start of the new term came the increase in sport and clubs available to our young people again, and I was delighted to present prizes to young cricketers at the end of their season at the Hamworthy Club. School’s Out Some dos and don’ts to consider when it comes to applying for a school place for the first time.

DO attend the open days.

It’s easy to gloss over an establishment’s flaws when looking at a fancy brochure, which is why attending a school’s open day is essential (even though this is still arguably the best the place will ever look). Upon arriving, pay attention to how the school feels – what’s on the walls, how organised are the classrooms, are the teachers friendly and, if it’s a daytime opening, how engaged are the kids?

DO pay attention to the Ofsted report and league tables. Official statistics will tell you test and exam results for the schools you’re looking at, offering a pretty reliable snapshot of how each is performing, while the Ofsted

bullying or disruption at the school, it’s important to bear both in mind. Similarly, if a school has a ‘satisfactory’ rating but seems to have got its act together since the report, it may be worth giving it a second look.

DON’T be afraid to ask questions. Take the opportunity to ask teachers and pupils alike how they feel about the school, and don’t fret about being upfront with representatives regarding any nagging doubts you have.

DO go with your heart. Whatever the facts and figures, the most important barometer is how you and your little one feel about the school, and that feeling normally comes from the heart.

DO look for convenience.

While it’s not a main consideration, for parents keen to return themselves to work and productivity while their children are in school, location and proximity are key factors.

DON’T be taken in by cosmetic appearance. Schools come in all shapes, sizes and appearances. While the newer ones may look glossy, modern and straight from an architect’s brochure, it’s what goes on in the classroom, within the pages of books and inside the minds

report will offer a broader understanding of how the curriculum is taught and the pupils’ overall wellbeing.

But DON’T base your decision entirely on that. If an institute has an ‘outstanding’ Ofsted rating, but you’ve heard of

Tainted Tech?

While technology is intended to connect us with the truth, sometimes it is the one thing taking us further away from it.

Fake news is now something that permeates through every aspect of our lives – from Brexit to Covid to political, social and racial unrest, the dangers we face as citizens are no longer in a lack of news and opinion, as would have been the case a generation ago, but an abundance of it, and in many cases, a lack of transparency over what is being said.

This problem is exacerbated by a rapid demand for news, combined with a throwaway ethos. It means we take ‘topline’ detail without sometimes doing the source, or ourselves, the simple respect of delving into the detail.

Read Story Comments Comments are useful in gaining what is often a fair crosssection of opinion on a subject (although not always). More than that, people will often use them to call out interpretations and inaccuracies that are being passed off as fact.

The Twitter Litter - On Twitter, look at the number of the source’s previous posts. A social media handle with fewer than 100 posts may be someone who only reads posts and does not engage with others. On the flipside, if the handle has more than 100,000 posts, it could be a bot handle that automatically posts hundreds of links to news stories.

What’s more, across Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and more, Artificial Intelligence (AI) bots can be seen to like and even comment on news posts, boosting exposure and fulfilling algorithms that then make that message stand out even more. In short, these bots are posing as humans, manipulating the public and influencing opinion.

Here are a handful of ways you can help remove fake news from real news: A Head for Heights - Read beyond the headline before sharing. It sounds almost too basic, but huge numbers of people never get past the headline before sending it to others. Sharing fake news is as damaging as creating it.

Source of Opinion - Research the name and political background of the news site.

The lines between fake news and biased news are becoming ever more blurred, and to approach a story aware of the perspective of the writer is often a valuable way of understanding and evaluating what is being said.

Fake Basics - When using a supposed verified news source, look for “about” or “contact us” information. If it doesn’t exist on the originating site, or looks suspicious in any way, take it as a warning sign that the information you’re about to consume may be trying to make you think or behave in a certain way.

Welcome to the October Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include an unpredictable meteor shower, as well as the gas giants continuing to dominate the evening skies.

International Space Station The ISS is visible from the 1st - 7th between 7.30 – 9.30pm. It then moves to the early morning skies from the 23rd. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your observing area.

Object of the month The Plough is a recognisable pattern of stars in the constellation of Ursa Major, known also as the Big Dipper, and Saucepan. The ‘bowl’ can be used to locate the North Star, and the ‘handle’ the orange giant star, Arcturus. During October it is easily spotted in our north-western skies around 7.30pm. Most of the stars in this familiar grouping are moving together through space, hence in 100,000 years our ancestors will see the same pattern of stars. However, the stars at the tip of the handle and top of the bowl are not part of this group, and move independently. This means that in future years our ancestors will see a skillet, rather than a saucepan (see figure).

Events Two meteor showers occur this month, but the Orionids, which are caused by Halley’s Comet, will be lost in moonlight. Better placed for viewing are the October Draconids which peak on the 8th, and are visible all night. Meteors are often faint, but in some years have been plentiful. Draw an imaginary line from Altair to Vega, and the radiant is half that distance again past Vega, high in the western skies.

Mercury Mercury is visible for a few days mid-month, but you’ll have to be up early and have a clear view to the east as it doesn’t venture far above the horizon.

Venus Venus is still hovering in our evening twilight, but sets around 7.30pm. Our closest neighbour is huddled up close to a 3-day-old Moon on the 9th (see figure). If you have a small telescope Venus will appear ‘half-full’ this month.

Mars The red planet is lost in the Sun’s glare until November when it becomes a morning object.

Jupiter & Saturn Both gas giants continue to be visible in our southern evening skies. The Moon joins them between the 13th – 15th (see figure).

Moon This month’s full moon occurs on the 20th of October and is traditionally known by a variety of names, including Hunter’s, Blood and Fall Moon. To the Algonquin indigenous tribes it was known as the ‘White frost on the grass’ moon. Saturday 16th October is International Observe the Moon night. Have a look on the internet and see if any local astronomy clubs are hosting an event near you.

Object of the month The Plough is a recognisable pattern of stars in the constellation of Ursa Major, known also as the Big Dipper, and Saucepan. The ‘bowl’ can be used to locate the North Star, and the ‘handle’ the orange giant star, Arcturus. During October it is easily spotted in our north-western skies around 7.30pm. Most of the stars in this familiar grouping are moving together through space, hence in 100,000 years our ancestors will see the same pattern of stars. However, the stars at the tip of the handle and top of the bowl are not part of this group, and move independently. This means that in future years our ancestors will see a skillet, rather than a saucepan (see figure).

Butternut Squash and Chorizo

Introduction

As autumn draws in, the tastes and flavours that pattern our diets begin to change.

We don’t necessarily require nor crave the lightness of the summer, with salads gradually giving way to meat and carb-influenced dishes.

With that in mind, using the light, sugariness of a butternut squash, yet gently layering in meaty protein that can guide us towards the winter months, is a great way to embrace the season.

What’s more, the versatility of the dish means it can be cooked for breakfast by leaving out the gnocchi, as a medium lunch, or combined with bread for an evening meal.

Oh… and it tastes fantastic!

Method

Ingredients (serves four) 1 tsp of olive oil 300g chorizo 450g butternut squash 1 onion 500g gnocchi

Top Tips

• This is a flavour-driven plate that intends to combine sweet with spicy. Don’t be afraid to experiment further, adding sourness (in the form of lime), tomato flavours (which will also add moisture), and generous proportions of salt and pepper too. Let your tastebuds run away with you!

• Be careful not to overcook your chorizo. Remember, considering it’s a food that can be eaten cold, it really doesn’t need much cooking at all, so lean on the side of undercooking. If you fry it for too long, it will become tough and unpalatable.

1. Warm the oil on a medium heat and add the choppedup chorizo. Cook for around 5mins until it’s browned, and the oil begins to seep out, but turn down the heat when this happens so you retain moisture in the meat. Remove and keep to one side.

2. Now combine chopped butternut squash and onion, cooking over medium heat with

an addition of oil, if needed. Stir until golden brown and tender, for 10-15mins.

3. Add your gnocchi to a pan of boiling water and cook for four minutes. Then drain.

4. Stir in the chorizo with the butternut squash and onion, and season with salt, pepper and lime, then serve with the gnocchi.

Tip This plate has an intensely Spanish ‘small plates’ feel, but you can add green vegetables to it to create a more balanced dish, north European twist, should you wish.
