Dear Wimborne & Merley residents, Nellie, the Dorset Publications campervan, has had an interesting start to 2016 which you can read all about on pages 28 and 29. Well, the year is already flying by. We have managed to book a holiday in April on the Greek island of Santorini! I fell in love with this island last year on our cruise with Mum and Dad, for Dad’s 80th Birthday. When I saw a bargain on the internet I couldn’t resist. We will be right on the volcanic Perissa beach, so I will certainly get to gaze at the magnificent waters again. Then in August we have booked a camping trip! Nellie can hardly contain herself and is really excited about taking us to Devon where Hayden will enter his first surf lifesaving competition in the sea. It is always good to have something to look forward to, don’t you think? For now, it is work and sorting the house and garden out. There is quite a bit to do. Did you make lots of New Year’s resolutions and are still successfully carrying them out? I do hope so. News from Westminster As always, it has been a busy and varied couple of weeks. I have contributed to several debates, both in the House of Commons chamber and in Westminster Hall. Along with other Dorset MPs, I have been encouraging the Government to rethink its funding for rural areas. Dorset is a beautiful place to live, but it has challenges, and I will continue to fight for a fair deal. My view is that we should be narrowing the gap between urban and rural areas to ensure everyone gets their fair share. Many constituents have contacted me with concerns about the Regulation of Out of School Education Settings Bill. This is a bill which would require any organisation working with children and young people for more than 6 hours a week to register and be inspected by Ofsted. I was pleased to take part in a debate about this bill, highlighting my concerns that any new regulations should not be heavy handed and onerous. Many organisations ranging from churches to youth and sports clubs do great work with young people, often using hard working volunteers. Whilst we need to make sure that our children are safe and well looked after, I will continue to press to ensure that any new regulations do not include activities such as Sunday schools and summer camps. One aspect of my job is to promote Mid Dorset and its businesses wherever possible. I am therefore delighted that Wimborne’s local micro-brewery 8 Arch Brewery are going to be showcasing one of their ales in a House of Commons bar. The Stranger’s Bar, which is open to both MPs, their visitors and other pass holders in Parliament, will be stocking one of their ales during March. Eight Arch Brewing Co, named after the eight arches at nearby landmark Julian’s Bridge, started brewing in January 2015. For those of you who aren’t able to get to the Stranger’s Bar, they have
a taproom open every Friday evening in Wimborne from 4-8pm in Stone Lane Industrial Estate. I particularly enjoy visiting schools as part of my job. I have been visiting a number of schools and preschools across the constituency, including Wimborne First School, seeing a fantastic range of work from across a wide range of subjects. Whenever possible, I also like to meet with pupils when they visit the Houses of Parliament. I feel it is important to engage children and young people in the democratic process, helping them to understand the freedoms we enjoy as a country. I have recently written to every school in the constituency inviting them to enter the 2015/16 Speaker’s School Council Awards. The awards are an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the school council’s achievements in bringing about positive change in their school or community. The March Hare The sight of a brown Hare, poised for action at any moment, is a wonderful thing, and for many is something they’d like to tick off their wildlife bucket list. In the South West, a quarter of the estimated 800,000 population of Hares can be found. Here in Dorset we are blessed with a few hotspots for Hare watching, including Chesil Beach, Cranborne Chase and the Cerne Valley. If you are lucky enough to see one, the chances are it won’t stay around for long. With the ability to run up to speeds of 45mph these sprightly and athletic animals are well-equipped for survival in harsh habitats, which is often in the open, exposed to the elements. In addition to being the UK’s fastest land mammal, they also have near-360 degree vision. One thing Hares are well known for is their ‘boxing’ abilities during the breeding season. This display of aggression, which is usually females denying persistent partners, can be observed in spring and summer. The frenzied display is the reason they’ve earned their reputation ‘mad as a March hare’.
However, Hare numbers are sadly dwindling, with a 75% decline in their populations since the Second World War. There are many complex reasons for this decline, including intensification of agriculture and changes in the patterns of land use. Their ideal habitat is grassland and arable areas, and rather than burrowing like rabbits, they create shallow forms in the grass, and use woods, hedges or fields, where they rest during the day. However when disturbed they can be seen bounding across fields, using their powerful hind legs to propel them forwards, often in a zigzag pattern! Whilst Hares can be seen all year round, as they don’t hibernate, it is often easier to see them in the early morning and late evening this time of year, due to lack of foliage in the landscape. Whilst in times gone by it was considered ‘bad luck’ for a hare to cross your path, seeing a Hare is a rare and wonderful sight – just make sure you’re quick with your camera if you want to capture the moment. New Ford Mondeo
By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk The fifth generation Mondeo is now available with Ford’s range of economical EcoBoost engines and, for the first time in the UK, a hybrid petrol-electric option. Introduced in 1992 to replace the Ford Sierra, the Mondeo went on to become a piece of popular culture in 1996 when Tony Blair used the phrase ‘Mondeo Man’ in his Labour Party Conference address. What a shame there’s so much badge snobbery around these days though. The reaction I got from premiumbadge car lovers when I mentioned I was attending the Ford Mondeo press launch wasn’t exactly upbeat. This just goes to show how marketing and image affects people’s preconceptions. Don’t get me wrong; Ford is no stranger to spin either, but I’ve got to tell you this latest Mondeo is the real deal. At launch, I tested the Mondeo Titanium Estate 2.0 Duratorq TDCI. With 148bhp and 258 lb.ft of max torque, the Ford is able to dig deep at low revs, resulting in proper pulling power. Certainly, it’s easy to be blinded by the kudos of a premium badge but the Mondeo is brilliant whether in estate, five door hatch or four door hybrid semblances. It’s handsome, interior space is excellent, the ride is smooth and the handling is spot on. The diesel estate, in particular, excels in every single area. It’s fantastic to drive, it has a refined engine and the boot is the perfect shape for carrying a range of everyday items, from a family-sized weekly shop to a stack of suitcases. It’s good value and will be less costly to run than many of its competitors. The car is crammed with entertainment tech and safety gadgetry too. In fact it’s the most advanced Ford ever introduced in Europe, and has been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating by independent crash test authority Euro NCAP. The Mondeo is the first car from the Blue Oval brand worldwide to offer Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection. This is designed to detect people in the road
ahead – or that could cross the vehicle’s path – and automatically applies the brakes if you don’t respond to warnings at the wheel. Also introduced for the first time in Europe is Ford’s ground-breaking Inflatable Rear Seatbelt technology. In the event of an accident, the seatbelts expand to disperse crash forces across a body area five times greater than that achieved by a conventional belt. This offers valuable extra protection to very young or old passengers with weaker chest areas. On the entertainment front, Ford’s SYNC 2 connectivity system boasts an eight-inch colour touch-screen to operate phone, entertainment, climate and navigation systems using voice commands. For example, simply pushing the voice control button and saying “I’m hungry” will display a list of local restaurants, and the MICHELIN guide can help you choose where to eat. SYNC 2 will then connect you by phone to the restaurant to book a table and guide you there. Groovy, or what? So, this Ford Mondeo with its ‘common-as-muck badge’ is as good, if not better, than many of the eulogized German ‘premium’ cars. Go on – hop in one and try one out. A New Church House The present Church House in Wimborne was opened in 1906. A year earlier, the General Committee signed a proposal for the new building on May 1st, 1905, appealing for funds. The committee was made up of 37 members, including Canon Huyshe, the chairman, the two churchwardens from the Minster, Lord Alington, Mrs Bankes, Mr G Habgood and Sir John Hanham. The committee stated that there was an urgent need for ‘a convenient centre for Church work’. A possible site adjacent to the Minster had been identified, until then in use by Sansom & Son, an ironmonger’s shop. The architect was Walter Fletcher and he had been asked to prepare the plans for the new building, which had to be ‘in harmony’ with the Minster. Advice was sought from Sir Aston Webb, the distinguished architect and later President of the Royal Academy. The appeal gave further details on the building’s layout. There would be three rooms on the ground floor, cloak room and kitchen, and a hall on the first floor accessed by two staircases. A sketch of the proposed building was also added. The committee estimated that £3,000 was needed to fund the project, with just under half the amount already pledged. The foundation stone was laid by Mrs Bankes, of Kingston Lacy, on September 13th. The opening of Church House took place the following year on July 25th, 1906. The building was dedicated by the Bishop of Salisbury.

Inheritance T�
At present everyone has a ‘nil rate band’ of £325,000 worth of assets which can be left free of inheritance tax upon their death to anyone they wish. After £325,000 the full 40% rate of inheritance tax applies to all assets exceeding the threshold, or 36% if more than 10% of the net estate is left to charity. If a person dies leaving all their assets to their spouse or civil partner, 100% of their nil rate band can be transferred to the surviving spouse. The rate is applied at the date of second death. This means that even if the nil rate band was lower when the first spouse died, if they left all of their assets to their surviving spouse, 100% of the current nil rate band can be used when the second spouse dies. When the second spouse or civil partner dies, at present they can leave up to £650,000 of assets to whoever they wish, free of inheritance tax. If the spouse who dies first uses some of their nil rate band to make gifts to people other than their spouse, either by their Will or during their lifetime, the remaining percentage of the nil rate band can still be transferred upon second death. This is due to change from 2017 when there will be an additional allowance for a deceased’s main residence when it is left to a direct descendant. A direct descendant includes not only biological children but also step-children, adopted children and foster children, as well as remoter issue, such as grandchildren. From 2017 to 2018 this allowance will be £100,000. From 2018 to 2019 this increases to £125,000. From 2019 to 2020 it increases further to £150,000. Finally, from 2020 to 2021 it increases to £175,000 and thereafter it will continue to increase in line with the Consumer Price Index, so that as house prices rise the allowance will increase as well. This also applies
where the deceased has either sold their main residence, for example because they have gone into care, or have downsized, after July 2015. The cash proceeds of such a sale, up to the allowance limit, can also be left to direct descendants free of tax. This additional allowance does not, however, apply where an estate is worth over £2million and it is reduced by £1 for every £2 over that threshold. This threshold will also be linked to the Consumer Price Index. The additional residential allowance can only be applied in relation to one residential property but, if there are multiple residential properties within an estate, the Executors and Trustees can nominate which property the allowance is to be applied to. Buy-to-let properties will not qualify.

The Adventures of Nellie
The Dorset Publications Camper Van Oh boy did we had a fright a few weeks ago when Nellie found herself in snow near East Grinstead! After a day of being parked in the freezing cold she refused to move, or at least her engine did start but she screamed out in pain and gusts of smoke flew from her nostrils. (It is one way we women can make a point...) I wasn’t there and when Stephen called me to say he was awaiting the RAC man, I was worried. As you know Nellie certainly is not as young as she used to be, has done a lot of running around, and her arthritis can get her down. Would she pull through? Would she get back on that motorway? Well, amazingly she did. The belt around her power steering had slipped and once back in place she stopped yelling and the smoke diminished. Now can you believe it? As a result of this incident Nellie now has a friend, and one she is rather fond of. Stephen has bought himself a handsome car of steel, full of gusto and muscle (Nellie will have to watch herself). It is a Mazda RX8, silver and definitely has charm. “Mighty Rex” we have named him. The excuse for buying the car was to help Nellie. Ummmm... Stephen sold me well on that one. After all Nellie is getting on a bit and since I had started all those awful thoughts of “which home would we put her in, how would we tell her and how would she take it?” etc etc, it seemed a good solution all round. Nellie has now had a rest for a week in the garden but will still be taking us for many a trip here in the South. Phew... Like a lot of us older ladies, there is life in her yet! (Especially now she has Mighty Rex to share the garden with...)
Nellie with Mighty Rex in the gardem At the other end of the scale, something else we parents and grandparents worry about is how to keep the children off the computer for at least some of the time each day. Let’s face it we never had computers in our day and Nellie remembers many a good afternoon running around in the garden playing hide and seek, making a den with old blankets, climbing trees and otherwise being a nuisance to the neighbours with footballs landing in hedges and tennis balls banging continuously against garage doors. It doesn’t seem to happen like that these days. No, we have computers. In fact I often answer a question Hayden seems to ask only to find it isn’t me he is talking to at all, but is busily chatting away to his friends on Skype! Oh it is so different. Nellie worries about this but manages somehow to get Hayden out of the house. Hayden loves swimming and has been a member of “Swim Bournemouth” for a couple of years now. Nellie loves to take him to his sessions, up to 5 times a week in fact, and watch him glide through the water like a seal. Recently a friend from the club suggested Hayden try and get into

29 the Surf Life Saving Club at Branksome. Not to miss an opportunity, Nellie excitedly sold the idea to Hayden who was more than happy to give it a go. After all they swim in the sea in the summer! Well last week Nellie took us to our first Surf Life Saving Competitions. How exciting! It is all very new to us so we went along not knowing what to expect and told Hayden, who has had all of 4 lessons now, to do his best and enjoy himself. We absolutely loved it. The atmosphere was invigorating. We shouted so much and cheered with all our might that Nellie couldn’t toot her horn the next day, she was so hoarse. One race was so close and Hayden and his partner won! The aim was for the rescuer to paddle on a board to the ‘patient’, 25 metres away at the other end of the pool, and get the patient aboard so both could return as quickly as possible. Balancing on the board is a skill in itself, so paddling at full speed in unison with your partner takes some doing. Like all good Mums I have it on video… and am deafened by my own voice. (No change there then.) Another race involved the mannequins which for the ‘nippers’ ie the younger ones, were only half filled with water, so they are not so heavy. Heads in the water causing your poor patient to drown are disqualified which is probably just as well.

The mannequin race in the pool If Nellie was ever to fall in the water she would want to be able to breath. All good fun but such a great skill to have. The young teenagers who have been doing this for some time, are fully responsible for the younger ones and become their coaches so you can imagine the rapport between them all. Such great team work. It is so good to watch them all working together. One of the most difficult parts of the whole competition was the rope throwing one. Pulling in the rope so that it does not knot, throwing it with skill so it doesn’t coil back on itself or not quite reach your patient is really quite difficult. Observing the experienced adults do this, as opposed to the young nippers, there was no comparison. It was clear that this was a skill acquired with lots of practice! So Nellie has succeeded in getting Hayden even more out of the house and off his computer. She is very proud of herself. Hayden is learning a new skill and we are really pleased. Enjoyment all round and a win - win situation. Well done Nellie! Gardening Tips
On Your Plot Getting the upper hand Spring should really be on its way by the end of this month and there’ll be plenty of jobs to keep you busy on your plot. There’s nothing quite like sowing seeds and the thrill of watching those first tiny seedlings appearing just a week or two later. Weather permitting the soil should be warm enough to be sowing outdoors in March. Your new seedlings will need all the help that you can give them if they are to flourish so don’t forget the weeding and pest control too!
Jobs for March :-
• Prepare beds for sowing by raking level when the soil is dry enough. • Get a supply of containers and fill with compost ready for sowing (supermarket plastic trays containers are handy to reuse for this!) • Make sure you have all the seeds you need and sort them into the order that you’ll sow them in. • Plant first early potatoes later in the month. • Keep on top of the weeding and pest control. • Sow carrots, peas, parsnips, lettuce and radishes
There’s no doubt that the weather during the first part of the year lived up to our expectations of a month of extremes - with mild temperatures and homes and gardens hammered by incredible rainfall. Hopefully March should see the weather settling down and Spring truly starting to emerge. Most seed packets give you some guidelines as to which month/or months are best to sow in but personally I think that it’d be a lot more helpful if they gave a little information about the temperature required, not to mention just how long germination is likely to take. Soil temperatures of at least 6°C are needed for most seeds - if you don’t want to guess at this you can get a soil thermometer to check. Don’t forget that by using products such as fleece, or cloches, over your beds you can raise the temperature. Some seeds, such as parsnips, are notoriously slow to germinate taking up to 3 weeks for seedlings to appear - a good idea with slow starters like these is to sow quick growing crops such as radishes on either side of the row. This will
help mark the rows out until your parsnips appear and the radishes will quickly be grown and ready to harvest. Take note also of the depth that the different seeds should be sown at - too shallow and they’ll either blow away or be eaten by the birds, too deep and you may bury them alive! Try to space seeds evenly, though if you sow too many you can thin out the weaker seedlings after they appear. Do remember that with many crops it is better to sow just a few and then sow again in a few weeks time to avoid having too many ready to harvest all at once. Salad crops such as lettuce will bolt if left too long, and other vegetables which may have a short harvesting period can be enjoyed for much longer if you save the seed and sow a few in succession every few weeks. As the soil warms up for your new crops so it also warms up nicely for the weeds about now! For many people part of the attraction of growing your own is eating chemical free produce and organic methods of pest control will therefore be preferred. Little and often is best - take a quick walk around the veg patch each morning and hand pick any emerging weeds. Hoeing also works well and if you are careful not to let weeds set seed you’ll avoid a long-term problem. Of course the situation isn’t helped by the fact that your patch is likely to have large amounts of bare soil on it between widely spaced rows at this time of year. Some crops, such as potatoes will obligingly grow to ultimately block out the light and deter weeds, but if you’re really having problems then think about putting down a thick, organic, mulch to cover the bare soil. Slugs will also emerge to attack your young seedlings - there’s no end of organic ways to do battle from hand picking at night and beer traps to watering in nematodes. Strike early and gain the upper hand!

Wimborne Library – Your Library Last Saturday saw the launch of our weekly ‘Library Gets Lively’ and Board Game sessions. Despite the terrible wind and rain the events were well attended and enjoyed by all. Library Gets Lively is a crafty session aimed at young children and their parents/ carers and is a drop-in event between 10.30 and 11.30am. We would love to see you. Board Game sessions are for any age and you are welcome anytime between 2.003.30pm – we have a selection of classic games for you to play. Don’t forget we have weekly tablet/Ipad drop-in sessions held on Thursdays 2.15– 3.30pm so if you need help with any aspect do come along. Refreshments available. If you are struggling to get online with your computer or laptop we offer one to one tuition with our volunteer Digital Champion. These sessions are currently held on a Saturday but need to be pre-booked in advance. This week we have rearranged the book stock within the library to make it more accessible – it has proved to be a massive undertaking but we hope all our customers will find it more user-friendly. LEWIS Cheap Trains, Drains & Automobiles Some folks drive a lot for various reasons be it business or personal, here a few tip to help cut the cost of travel. • Free tank of fuel via extreme couponing trick. If you’re planning a big spend at any one of 50+ retailers (including House of Fraser, Homebase and PC World), buy the gift card in Morrisons and you get 1p/litre off fuel per £10 spend. So £100 gets 10p off and £1,000ish gets a free tank. The real trick isn’t to use them as gifts, but that if you’re planning a big purchase in that store anyway, first pop into Morrisons and buy the gift card. Then a few days later, once it’s active, go and use it to buy your planned purchase, giving you a potentially whopping petrol discount. There’s a full list of retailers and more info at: www.morrisonsfuelsaver.co.uk. • Turn your heating down, but not off if you’re going away If it gets cold, no heating risks burst pipes. So much so that some insurers won’t cover you for damage if your home’s unoccupied for more than five days and you turned the heating off. The rule of thumb is keep it to a minimum 14 degrees. • Buying two tickets for one train journey can save you £100s Split ticketing makes about as much sense as Chewbacca, but it works. It’s where you buy tickets for a journey’s constituent parts separately to slash the price. It’s allowed by the conditions of carriage – the only rule is that the train must call at the stations you buy tickets for. For example, a single from Manchester to Cornwall costs £158, but the train stops at Cheltenham Spa. Buy a £52 ticket from Manchester to Cheltenham Spa, then a £58 one from there to Cornwall and the total’s £110. That’s the same train, the same time – possibly even the same seat. As Justine tweeted me: “Genius - tickety split has just saved me £50, no effort, exact same journey.” • Cheap boiler cover - you don’t need to stick with your energy firm Boiler cover is a free market, yet energy firms like you to think you need to stick with them. You don’t. While British Gas charges £12/month, you may be able to get similar cover for as little as £6. My quick tips: a) Renters usually don’t need it, as their landlord’s likely responsible. Check.
b) Ensure you know what cover you need. Choose between boiler-only, the cheaper option that covers your boiler and its controls, or central heating cover, which includes full central heating cover on top (including radiators, pipes, etc). c) To find the cheapest, compare prices via uSwitch.com and add in Energyhelpline.com if you’ve time. • Get a year’s breakdown cover for £17. If your car has had trouble during the winter season, it can be costly to pay it back in the Spring. Thankfully, if you know what you’re doing you can get super cheap cover. There are four things you need to know: - If you’re renewing, haggle. 84% of AA and 76% of RAC customer who tried reported success. - If you’re new then for basic cover use a cashback site. A standard RAC policy is £28 online and an AA policy £35, but sites like Topcashback.co.uk and Quidco.com give around £10-£15 back so the effective cost to you is £18ish. This usually works, though do note the cashback isn’t 100% guaranteed. - If you have Tesco clubcard points you can swap them in for RAC cover, so £16 of vouchers gives you basic breakdown. - For full service, Autoaidbreakdown.co.uk is a pay and reclaim polcy for £42/year, which covers you and your spouse for home start, breakdown and onward travel. A local delivery firm is sent out, and you pay then send in receipts to get the cost back. • Do you know where your stopcock is? No nudge nudge wink wink needed. I T’S ALL CHILDS P LAY Stick Tricks
Inspiration comes in mysterious ways as I discovered whilst out walking the dog. I was mulling over fun things for children and families to do in March, when my Collie cross paused for the umpteenth time, to sniff something interesting, a stick no less! This got me thinking about all the amazing things that you can do with twigs and sticks, a great focus for a damp or cold March day! Collecting sticks is a serious business. Whether you fall into the camp of finding the stick first and letting this inspire what you make or set your hopes on making something, be it a paint brush or a bow, and then search for the ideal stick, is a matter of mood or taste. What’s clear is that a stick is not just a stick but depending upon its shape, girth, flexibility and smoothness, can be crafted into a quirky pencil complete with knots, a dead straight arrow or springy curved bow. The Stick Book by Schofield and Danks does exactly what it says on the tin, offering ‘loads of things to make or do with a stick’ Packed full of fun ideas for bringing sticks to life it is a great starting point for a wealth of projects from stick and mud people to den building, nest making to kites. It may even get you thinking about a favourite childhood game with sticks, surely pooh sticks would have to feature somewhere?! With so many childhood toys one dimensional and little more than passive entertainment, a stick is fundamentally different as in the hands of different children, different environments and different times and moods it can become the perfect accompaniment to exploring a puddle, a magic wand, wizards staff, shadow clock or camping stove. If this has rekindled your fire and you can’t wait to get stuck in, here are some great ideas to try this month. Artistic Sticks Sticks lend themselves to creating a wealth of artistic materials from paintbrushes complete with feather or moss tips, to paint palettes, ink pens to charcoal. What’s more paper and paint aren’t essential with the floor as your canvas and natural colouring from berries or mud. Adventure Sticks Sticks and survival are a marriage in heaven. Pick a long straight green hazel or willow stem for a strong and supple bow and whittle the end of shorter pieces
for arrows. Find a Y-shaped twig for the perfect catapult or a long snarled and wizened stick for a staff. Make spears and swords complete with carving for make believe play or a tripod for alfresco cooking. Creative Sticks Pliable sticks are great for weaving into nests, sculptures or crowns while dried out elder wood is perfect for cutting into beadlike pieces to be hollowed out with a braddle or skewer before threading on string. A mix of mud and sticks are great for making animal sculptures or creating spooky tree trunk faces. Combine with acorns and other seedpods to create mini animals. Story Sticks Use four sticks to create a frame on the floor and add some natural treasures to weave into a story or play a storyboard guessing game. Go on a woodland walk armed with a stick and some elastic bands for collecting fallen items, such as feathers and leaves to act as a memory prompt. Or make spellings or word games fun by picking a special stick to point with! Sticks are great but why stop there when there’s all of nature’s rich store cupboard to raid? Silver birch tree bark makes a wonderfully unusual cover for a notebook and instead of deadheading roses and other flowers in winter, cut them long enough to use as natural paintbrushes instead! What better way of prompting a trip to the beach than shell foraging to make pretty candles with at home? Or if a woodland trip is planned, collect acorn shells for some super cute floating candles! WALKER 1XLVDQFH &DOOV This week I received an email from a chap who has had to stop answering his home phone. He is receiving endless cold calls and has simply had enough of trying to get rid of the pesky salespeople trying to sell their services ranging from PPI claims to the installation of solar panels and how much they can save. It is very frustrating when you cannot answer you own phone without the fear of being bombarded about unwanted goods and services! Unwanted Phone calls What would you do if you were faced with the same situation? It is simply not acceptable that you have to avoid answering your own phone. The first thing you should do is contact the Telephone Preference Service (TPS), run by the Direct Marketing Association. The service is free and allows you to opt out of receiving marketing communications and includes preventing marketing calls from business development firms, charities, voluntary organisations and political parties. You can register your home and mobile numbers with the scheme. According to Ofcom research, your unwanted phone calls will reduce by one third. Once you are registered, organisations are not allowed to call you unless you have given prior consent. 45% of those registered on the list receive no more cold calls. Prior Consent When you sign up with new websites there are often two tick boxes, one for their terms and conditions and the other to receive communications from select partners. Do not tick this box, ever! If you do, you are consenting that data can be sold legitimately to third-party companies and this is considered prior consent. Even though you may have opted out via the Telephone Preference Service you will still receive communications from companies that have your data via this process. This loophole is extremely unfair and the Government is now considering if this law should be changed. Personally, I find it unbelievable that this law still exists and it certainly ought to be amended! Silent phone calls If you are receiving silent calls this is usually from an automated system in a Contact Centre. The system automatically dials phone numbers and if you answer, you are then connected to a member of staff in the Contact Centre. However, if no one in the Contact Centre is available then you receive the silent call. If the company is using this system, they must publish their phone number. Once you get off of the call, ring 1471 to find out the number or call your phone provider and request the caller’s phone number and then make a complaint.
Automated sales calls These are known as lead generation calls, looking to capture your details or leads to sell onto a firm. Companies making these calls must have your permission to make these calls to you. If you have not given permission then you should contact the Information Commissioners Office with as much information as possible. Call them on 0303 123 1113. Making a complaint If you are still receiving unwanted phone calls, you should make a complaint to the Telephone Preference Service. • When you receive the phone call ask the person what company they work for and their telephone number. Be sure to make a note of the number. Top tip: sometimes you can also obtain the phone number after finishing the call but prior to the next call by dialling 1471 on your home phone. • Contact the Telephone Preference Service and make an official complaint and it will be investigated. Unwanted text messages The Telephone Preference Service cannot help with unwanted text messages. Forward unwanted texts to 7726 and these will register as unwanted text messages with your mobile provider. Top tips for the phone • If you receive a phone call requesting any financial details or PIN numbers stating that they are checking your details, we strongly recommend that you refuse to divulge any information. • Talk to your home or mobile phone provider about what options they have to deal with nuisance calls in order to resolve these issues. On the iPhone you can choose to block a phone number. You can also obtain phone call identification but you will need to pay an additional charge for this service. You will be able to see the incoming call number. Get your phone number listed as ex directory by contacting your phone provider. Your details will not be published anywhere. Harassing phone calls If you are receiving rude or harassing phone calls then you should contact your phone provider for assistance and to investigate the issue. These calls are a criminal offence and will therefore be taken very seriously by your phone provider. If you are extremely concerned, contact the Police on 101 and they can trace the phone call.
