FREEMEN & FREEWOMAN EXERCISE THEIR ANCIENT RIGHTS BY DRIVING SHEEP THROUGH THE TOWN OF WIMBORNE MINSTER Last month saw certainly for the first time in living memory two flocks of sheep driven through part of the Town of Wimborne Minster when the two Honorary Freemen Anthony Oliver, MBE and Grant Bocking and the Honorary Freewoman Margery Ryan exercised their rights. One of the privileges of a Freeman of a Town is that they may drive their sheep through the town without having to pay a charge for doing so. This goes back in history to when a farmer, taking his sheep to market, had to drive them through the town to get them there. There was a charge for doing this which would have been levied by a person such as the Town Crier. The idea was the brain child of the current Town Mayor Cllr Mrs Sue Cook who also used the event as a fundraiser for her Charities - Dorset Youth Marching Band, Priest House Museum & Garden and the Wimborne Dementia Friendly Community. Two flocks of sheep very kindly supplied by Farmer John Wood of Merley Hall Farm were used. The sheep were driven from the Cornmarket through part of the High
The two Freemen and the Freewoman holding onto their sheep Street and into Crown Mead and over the new Waitrose Bridge into Willow Walk. The first flock was led by the Mayor who was challenged at the Bridge by Town Crier Chris Brown and his Deputy Mel Gudger and she had to pay a charge. The second flock were led by the Freemen and Freewoman and when challenged they provided the necessary documentary proof of exemption from paying and were allowed to cross the bridge. The sheep were then gathered into pens on Willow Walk. The Dorset Youth Marching Band played on Willow Walk both before and after the ‘sheep drive’ and £199 was raised for the Mayor’s Charities.

“It was a most successful morning”, said Anthony Oliver, one of the two Honorary Freemen and, “we were delighted with the large crowd present to watch such an historic occasion. Grateful thanks were expressed to the Mayor for suggesting the idea and to John Wood for providing the sheep and indeed all who helped to make the event such a happy one”.

Annual Bellringers Service held in Wimborne Minster For the first time since 1976 the Salisbury Diocesan Guild of Ringers Annual Festival Service was held in Wimborne Minster on Saturday 13th May. It was hosted by the East Dorset Branch, one of eight branches across the Salisbury Diocese. The Festival is hosted by a different branch each year and within each branch area by a different church. The Service was conducted by the Rector, the Revd. Canon Vanessa Herrick with the Address given by the Bishop of Sherborne, the Right Revd Karen Gorham. The singing was led by a choir made up of ringers from the East Dorset Branch and David
Warwick, Tower Captain at Wimborne was on the organ. The service consisted of hymns, prayers and readings. Ben Duke one of the Minster Bellringers read the new Testament reading and Judith Williamson the Guilds President read the poem ‘Bampton Bells’. The choir sang the Anthem ‘The Lord is my Shepherd and there was a short time of reflection whilst four Minster Bellringers, David Warwick, Trish Hitchins and Alan and Kath Bentley rang 112 changes of Plain Bob Major on the handbells. Following the Service the Annual Meeting of the Guild was held in Church House.

Good Practice Award for Wimborne Library Congratulations go to the team at Wimborne Library who have received an Adult and Community Services Good Practice Award for their work within the community. The library was nominated by Paul Leivers, Head of Early Help and Community Services at Dorset County Council in recognition for the excellent work the library have undertaken within Adult and Community Services. Fancy That! One of the Priest’s House Museum’s new exhibitions this spring explores handicraft for pleasure and employment. Lacework, embroidery and quilting were undertaken by the poor to earn a living, the wealthy to adorn their homes and later on by everyone as a hobby. Amongst the displays can be found a pair of hand knitted yellow gloves known as Ringwood or riding gloves. These warm gloves are replicas of those knitted by a local resident who, along with a relation, used to knit at home for W. Ayles and Son of Ringwood. Often children would help by knitting just the cuffs. They were knitted using a special ‘cross hatched’ ribbed design known as ‘knots’ that would not slip when wet. Gloves like these were first made as a cottage industry during the 19th century. Between the First World War and the Second World War, under new ownership, gloves were now being sold to London stores. Over 800 knitters, not all local, were involved in their production. During the Second World War 3000 pairs of navy blue gloves, in response to Churchill’s appeal, were sent to aid the people of Russia.

Unfortunately demand for these gloves ceased with the arrival of cheap imported gloves. In 1958 Ayles and Son finally gave up the production of hand knitted gloves.

AROUND 20 WIMBORNE GARDENS TO BE OPENED IN AID OF WIMBORNE IN BLOOM, SUNDAY 25thJUNE 2017 In celebration of Wimborne in Bloom’s 25th Anniversary Year around 20 Gardens in and around the Town of Wimborne Minster are to be opened on Sunday 25th June from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm to raise funds for Wimborne in Bloom. WIMBORNE IN BLOOM IS CALLING ALL ARTISTS AND POETS… Wimborne in Bloom’s Annual Painting and Poetry Competitions are again being organised this year. Miriam Margolyes By Tim Saunders Retirement is increasingly becoming a luxury of the past. While for some the cost of living is the reason, for others working is addictive and good for the soul. This desire to keep working can be found in all sectors, from scientists (Professor Stephen Hawking is 74) through to business people (Sir Alan Sugar is 69 and Sir Richard Branson is 66). And even in the world of fame. Seasoned entertainer Bruce Forsyth is 88 while David Attenborough the naturalist is 90. BAFTA award winning actress Miriam Margolyes is a comparative youngster at a mere 75. She is widely known for her role as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films. Miriam is as busy as ever, not just with her acting but also her work as a voice artist. “Sorry we’re going to have to reschedule our interview,” she says to me, “I’ve got another job on.” But we’re able to catch up at a quieter moment. It is a craving for success that drives Miriam to work even harder. “I don’t think I’m as successful as I would like and I don’t think I’m as successful as people think I am. I’m just in the front rank of the second raters as Somerset Maugham put himself. I think I’m hugely talented and I think I have the potential to be great.” As a voice artist, she has quickly become wellknown to countless children the world over as Weathersnike in Bottersnikes and Gumbles. Set in Australia it tells the tale of the evil bottersnikes: ugly, lazy creatures whose ears become hot when they get angry. The Gumbles are small, giggly things who the bottersnikes
try to enslave to make them do all their chores. This programme is aired in both Britain and Australia, a relationship that works well for Miriam because she has divided her time between the two countries for years. In 2013 she was presented with her Australian citizenship certificate by then prime minister Julia Gillard. And she isn’t as wealthy as some might envisage. “I don’t have more than half a million in the bank… Some people would say that’s pretty wealthy but I think you have to have a million in the bank before you’re wealthy.” Miriam does own or part-own a few properties, a home in south-west London, a Tuscan farmhouse and a penthouse close to Bondi Beach in Australia. There are two facets to Miriam that have stood her in good stead. Her eloquent tones ensuring that her voice is familiar. And her appearance making her instantly recognisable on stage or screen. Miriam has a great ability to make any role memorable. Her career spans five decades. She has appeared in TV programmes including Crossroads, three Blackadders and even an Agatha Christie (2004). More recently she has appeared in Doc Martin and Kingdom. Her film appearances include The Age of Innocence (1993) where she won the BAFTA. Directed by Martin Scorsese, Miriam played the part of the Countess’ grandmother. The Countess was played by Michelle Pfeiffer. “But the thing that I am most proud of in my life is Dickens’ Women.” The one- person show includes 23 different characters based on or inspired by characters in Charles Dickens’ novels. Jewish, a Labour supporter and a lesbian, Miriam is her own harshest critic, known for her plain speaking. When she has time, she is passionate about genealogy and politics. “I have got back as far as 1790 with my family tree but it is difficult because records of Jews were destroyed in the Second World War. Unexpected ‘landing’ on the Minster Green! Townspeople and visitors alike were surprised to see a Cessna 150 Aircraft sitting on the Minster Green beside the Ancient and Historic Minster Church one Saturday morning in May. It was all part of the Mission Aviation Fellowship Focus Weekend (MAF), the latest charity to be supported by the Minster. A coffee Morning was held in Church House while the ‘aircraft’ was on the Green and this raised £120 for MAF Funds. The Preacher at the 9.45am Parish Eucharist this morning (Sunday 14th May) was Kevin Crook, Head of MAF in the Community. MAF, a voluntary organisation which was founded 71 years ago has 140 aircraft , the majority of which are 6 to 10 seaters, unlike the 2 seater on
the Minster Green. MAF are based in 30 countries and actually operate in 40 countries. A worldwide operation costing £50million a year to run. Flying onto desert and jungle airstrips, lakes and rivers, tracks and roads MAF’s light aircraft and their mission pilots go the extra mile to provide a lifeline. Working in partnership with hundreds of Christian and relief organisations MAF enables practical help, physical healing and spiritual hope to be delivered to many of the most remote and inaccessible communities on the planet. MAF enables thousands of aid, relief and mission projects in really remote places, because that is where some of the greatest humans needs are to be found.

The Dorset Publications Camper Van Nellie took us fishing! This was another new experience for Nellie and she was rather excited. Grandma however was not so thrilled. Having been a fisherman’s wife for over 50 years the thought of one more day by the water was not so inspiring. I am sure any ladies out there with husbands who love to cast a line, will understand her reaction. When Dad proposed to Mum in 1962 he did add… “But I do go fishing…” Mum has never lived it down. As a child, nearly every Sunday of the fresh water fishing season, I loved to go to the ponds with Mum and Dad. Picnic in hand of course. Later when my sister was born, she was less enthralled and used to wonder off looking at the flowers and the birds. She still does that now! My best catch ever was a tench in Ireland when I ‘borrowed’ Dad’s huge rod (I was 13 at the

Nellie and family after a long day’s fishing time) and refused to let him help me bring the fish in. I was very proud of that one. Guess who takes after her Dad? So, Nellie was ‘chomping at the wheel’ to get going. Hordle Lakes near Lymington she decided to drive us to. It is a great place for the family as well as the more keen, carp fisherman. With separate lakes you can choose your level of skill. Bob’s Lake has recently had 30 pound carp added to it! Can you imagine getting one of those on your line? Well there were certainly men there who were doing just that. One man was having a cigarette after his line broke… he was looking into the sky dreaming longingly about the ‘one that got away’. Maybe us women should try and understand this more… We set up in “Tench Lake”. There was a family right next to us and with all the commotion we created I think they wish we hadn’t. Ever had that feeling? Hayden has fished with Grandad many times. In fact when he was only two years old he picked up a rod as if he was 50 and had done it all

29 his life. Funny how children do that. Now every time we go fishing with Dad we catch fish, and I mean a LOT of fish! Today was no exception. After two hours of catching common carp, F1 carp (those that have no barbels, are a hybrid and cannot regenerate - I found out), mirror carp, roach, and even a tench that Hayden caught, the fish were literally eating out of our hands. It was so good in fact Grandad taught Hayden the technique of “mugging” or “dobbing” where you quite honestly drop the maggot into the fishes mouth! That is illegal in match fishing of course, but Dad said the likelihood of being able to do that up north near Hull where they live, was nigh on impossible. Hayden (and Grandad) had fun with that. Hayden also learned the technique of using a feeding pot off the end of the rod, tipping the maggots into the water right where the float and hook are. Very clever. Now Stephen, unlike his son, was not born with a fishing rod in his hand…. He got the prize for the tiddlers and if he broke off once and lost the hook, he must have broken off twenty times. Nellie tried to tell him that it wasn’t a tug of war or a wrestling match. Maybe a light touch would work? It was all to no avail. The funniest part was when Stephen did get a fish on the hook and promptly started walking along the bank with it, taking the rod over Grandad’s

Debbie getting in on the action too! head (who ducked quickly, looking very quizzical), and continued marching along! Did I laugh. Nellie too! Of course it was another fish that got away and I don’t blame it, it was enough to scare the toughest ones off. We did explain that fish don’t have legs. Poor Stephen. Stick to the day job. Mum and I had gone for a rest. I thought we would be able to sit there for few hours relaxing, but that was not the case. We were up and down taking photos, videos, making cups of tea, getting burgers from the burger bar and generally keeping the men happy while they cast their lines and had a lot of fun. It was a great day all round. I am still not sure why the two men opposite decided to pack up and leave about an hour after we arrived. Oh oh… The skimmer carp were fun to watch on the water, the friendly robin sitting on Hayden’s rod, the gentleman who fishes every day having worked in aviation all his life and could talk for England… It is such a friendly place. The weather was beautiful. It is days out like this with the family that make life worth while. Pleasurable memories we can definitely look back on. Nellie was so pleased she was able to help and create such a moment. That is her purpose and what a great purpose to have. Where will she take us next? By Debbie Corney

It’s cold, wet, and miserable, so no wonder this is the peak summer holiday booking period. However, with the pound recently at a 32 year low against the dollar, and matching the awful rates of 2013 against the euro, this year it’s likely to be a challenge to get a decent price. The weak pound not only hits holiday spending, but hotels, car hire and more, so here are my 10 top tips for keeping costs down. 1. Pocket the perfect plastic to make the pound perform. Spend abroad and most credit cards add a 3% ‘non-sterling transaction fee’ which means £100 of euros costs £103 and some then load other charges on top. However, there are a range of specialist cards that don’t add that fee. So, you get that day’s same near-perfect rate that the banks do, in every country. My top two long term picks, as well as good exchange rates, have low cash fees - the www.creation. co.uk Everyday card and www.halifax. co.uk Clarity. Spending on these is super cheap, usually easily smashing the best bureau de change rates. Yet only do this if you’ll repay the card IN FULL each month, to avoid the 18.9% ish representative APR. It’s worth noting if instead of spending on the card you withdraw foreign cash and spend that, you will pay interest even if you clear in full, but even with that added they’re still not that costly. Once you know what hotel you want, always check to see if it’s being sold cheaper elsewhere, use comparison sites www.trivago.co.uk and www.travelsupermarket.com for a wide-ranging search (and always call the hotel to see if it’ll beat the price). The difference can be £100s. 3. With car hire book it early and buy insurance elsewhere. If hiring abroad, generally early booking is cheaper, what costs £10 a day now can be £40 a day when you get there. Here’s the three key steps: a) Do a comparison to find your cheapest. I’d try www.kayak.co.uk, www.carrentals.co.uk and if needed www.skyscanner.net too. b) Check stealth fuel charges. Some try and make you pay for a full tank and return it empty - adding £80ish if you don’t drive far. The above, apart from Kayak, let you filter by fuel policy. c) Don’t fall for their insurance up-sell. When you pick up a car they’ll often try and fear sell you up to £25/day insurance on top – to cover the large excess if you have any claims. If you’ll pay for this, instead use excess insurance comparison site www.moneymaxim. co.uk before you go and you can often @MoneySavingExpert find a policy from £2 a day. Yet if you do

Yet if you really want to slash flight costs, you need to get clever, such as using ethnic specialist travel agents and checking out airline code sharing deals. For full help see www. mse.me/cheapflights. 6. Don’t forget the good old fashion package holiday. Package holidays are where you usually get flights, hotels and transfers in one. They can still be the cheapest especially if you’re going away for 7, 10 or 14 days in a traditional holiday destination like Benidorm. Both www.travelsupermarket.com and www.icelolly.com have comparison sites. Then once you’ve got up a price, if you want to shave a little off, you can call up other agents to see if they’ll sell you the same holiday at a cheaper price. 7. Book travel insurance AS SOON as you book the holiday. Every year people email me saying something sadly akin to, “I’m due on holiday in a few months, but I’ve just been given a cancer diagnosis and can’t go, the airline won’t let me cancel, what can I do?” The answer is ‘that’s what travel insurance is
for’. Yet many people only book it just before they go. Waiting defeats half the point of having the cover – which is to protect you in the event cancellation is needed due to illness, a death in the family or something else. Full help on the cheapest policies, including for over 65s in www.mse.me/travelinsurance. 8. Booked EasyJet – keep checking the price. If your EasyJet price drops after you’ve booked it – excluding in a sale – you can just call it up to ask for the difference back in vouchers. Jo emailed: “We got an £803 voucher... all thanks to you.” 9. Check if your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is still valid. The free EHIC means if you’re in an EU (and a few others) country you can use a state GP or hospital for the same price as a local, so if it’s free for them, it’s free for you. It’s valuable extra protection (alongside travel insurance). Yet it’s not valid for millions, this is nothing to do with Brexit, but simply that it has a valid until date and 5.3 million expired in the last year. Check yours, if it is, go to www. nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcareabroad/ EHIC to get a new one for FREE (don’t Google this, you’ll find shyster sites trying to charge you to do it who add nothing to the process). 10. Be careful boozing on holiday. A final thought. If you’re going to drink on holiday (and let’s be honest, for many people that’s half what it’s about), remember this may invalidate your travel insurance claim. So, take it easy, and if you won’t take it easy, at least think about what belongings you’re taking with you! @MoneySavingExpert

Hundreds visit Lulworth Castle to support charities annual classic and sports car show On Sunday 14th May local sight loss charity Dorset Blind Association hosted their annual Classic Car Show at the picturesque setting of Lulworth Castle. This hugely successful and well attended event showcased over 80 classic and sports cars with hundreds of members of the public visiting the show and raising over £3,000 to help the charity maintain the services it provides for blind and partially sighted people across Dorset. This prestigious event, now in its third year, was kindly sponsored by Imerys and Cre8ive Wisdom and was held at Lulworth courtesy of James Weld DL, who is the charity’s President. The event was started by Miss Dorset, who sent the cars out on a 30 mile run around the Dorset countryside before returning to Lulworth to display their beautiful motors at the Castle Showground. The event saw hundreds of local supporters, holiday makers and car enthusiasts descend on the Castle throughout the day, creating a real community buzz. The event, which was open to the public free of charge, had something for all ages to enjoy; a selection of local stalls selling crafts and local produce, entertainment throughout the afternoon from a local choir and musicians, along with a kids area with bouncy castle and face painting plus a visit from the ever popular, Peppa Pig! Attendees enjoyed relaxing in the afternoon sun with a glass of prosecco from The Fizz Tin and a gourmet burger from Dorset Catering Services, who also supplied the refreshments before the Run to the car owners. James Weld DL, of the Lulworth Estate, said: “The Dorset Blind Association is a charity I am tremendously proud to support, as did my father and grandfather before me. It is fantastic to see their Classic Car event growing year on year and especially as it is shown off in front of our beloved castle. I know how vital the work of the charity is to help blind and partially sighted people across Dorset. The charity’s small number of dedicated staff and large group of volunteers do a wonderful
job and I am always very pleased to be able to help in any way I can” Dorset Blind Association will reach its centenary next year. Despite helping around 1,000 people every month it receives no fixed funding so the charity is extremely grateful for the public support that this event received. The money raised will help to maintain the social and activity clubs which Dorset Blind Association provide across the county and which are critical to helping visually impaired people fight the loneliness and isolation which can so easily affect them. The clubs help to stop blind and partially sighted people from feeling forgotten, cut-off from society and marginalised. Helena Sinclair, Events Fundraiser at Dorset Blind Association, said: “We are so grateful for the public supporting events like this and through that helping us to maintain our services. We are extremely privileged to be able to continue holding the only Classic Car show at Lulworth Castle and it is very exciting seeing this event grow year on year. • Take off the side shoots from tomato plants to avoid them becoming too bushy and overburdened with fruit. Water regularly. • Garlic that was planted in the Autumn should be maturing now. Lift when the leaves start to shrivel and leave to dry in a warm spot. • Keep planting - the moist soil, higher temperatures and long days are ideal growing conditions. French beans, courgettes and salad crops can all be sown now. • Watch out for pests! Think about protecting brassicas before caterpillars start to become a problem.
Every year it amazes me how the plants respond so dramatically to the arrival of the warm weather. Anything sown or planted out in May seems to positively leap out of the ground and shoot skywards, in many cases quickly catching up with earlier sowings! Of course the lawn is no exception and if you don’t already have a composting system in place then why not set one up now and make use of some of those endless grass clippings? Ideally you want to have two (or even three) compost bins so that when one is ready to use for the garden you have another filling up and rotting down. You can buy allsorts of nifty looking, ready made, compost bins - some even have clever devices that make it easy to turn the whole bin to help the waste break down - but you don’t need anything fancy. You can just start a compost heap in an out of the way corner, enclosing it with old pallets, or wire mesh wrapped around four stakes if you want to keep it looking a little neater. So what should you compost?
Well any dead organic matter will decompose naturally but you should aim for a good mix of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ ingredients. Lawn trimmings, veg leaves and peelings provide the green element and you should add a reasonable balance of brown items such as shredded paper, straw, eggshells and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner bag. Turning the heap occasionally will accelerate the breakdown and covering with an old carpet when it is full will also help. Leave for several months and you should have some great compost! June is also the time of year when it is easy to start to run out of space on your plot. Everything puts on amazing growth spurts and you are suddenly left wondering where you are going to plant out those tomatoes that you’ve been nurturing in the greenhouse, or finding you’ve no room for the cabbages that you’d like to be eating later in the year. Time to expand your horizons and make full use of containers and of your borders. Look at the different varieties of lettuce and salad crops - many of these, along with cabbages, can add a splash of decorative, coloured foliage to your borders (and be eaten too!!!). Grow bags are wonderful for crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. They’ll be happy in a sunny spot on your patio but do remember to water and feed regularly. Larger pots can house courgettes and pumpkins, with the exotic looking flowers adding a bright splash of colour. Even hanging baskets can get in on the grow your own act! Look for suitable strawberries or tomatoes and you could be treated to a bumper crop of luscious fruit tumbling down from above.

Three Days of Agricultural Fun and Entertainment at the New Forest and Hampshire County Show The New Forest and Hampshire County Show will be bringing three days of agricultural fun and entertainment to New Park, Brockenhurst on 25th, 26th and 27th July 2017. With livestock competitions, main ring attractions, International Show jumping, local produce and cooking demonstrations to name a few, there will be something for the whole family to enjoy. Jamie Squibb will be returning to the Show to entertain visitors in the main ring with his exciting motocross stunt display. Jamie Squibb rides a Kawasaki KXF450 and is a three times British Champion who has ridden all over the world. Jamie’s team will demonstrate their daredevil bike tricks both on the ground and in the air whilst jumping across a 60ft gap whilst 40ft in the air. Visitors can watch them complete a variety of different stunts and jumps. They will be performing twice each day in the Rathbones East Ring. Jamie Squibb will be just one of a variety of main ring attractions entertaining the crowds in the main ring at the 2017 New Forest and Hampshire County Show. In addition, the Show will host International Show jumping competitions, The Grand Parade of Livestock, Inter-Hunt Relay,
Scurry Driving and the Pony Club Mounted Games. New attractions featuring at the Show in 2017 include free interactive cooking workshops for children, polo demonstrations, baking competitions and the brand new Garden Tearoom located in the Flower and Gardening Show. There will be lots of educational activities across the showground with milking demonstrations in the Cattle Section, egg hatching in the Poultry Tent, vegetable planting in the discovery zone as well as the return of the ever popular Sheep Show. Tickets for the New Forest and Hampshire County Show are available to purchase online via the New Forest Show website. Visitors will receive 15% off all tickets purchased online before Tuesday 18th July 2017. A shuttle bus service will be running throughout the Show between the showground and Brockenhurst train station which will be free for all advance ticket holders. New 2017 Ford Grand C-Max
By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk Ford’s Grand C-Max is a car designed to carry up to seven people safely and comfortably. It’s got all the things that make life easier. Things such as sliding rear doors that mean the children can get in or out without bashing the doors on walls or other cars. What’s more, the Grand C-Max is roomy inside, with a smart set-up that enables the centre chair in the second row to fold beneath one of the other seats, leaving a space to walk through. I should add, the Grand C-Max Ford loaned me was the Titanium X 2.0 TDCi 150PS Powershift. Basically, I was handed the top of the range version - the one with all the bells and whistles. However, whether you get the entry level or the top level Grand C-Max, its function is the same – it’s a car that’ll hold lots of people. Granted, the third row of seats are tucked away for most of the time in the boot floor, and even though they’re only for kids, they’re still very handy. There’s also a ‘normal’ Ford C-Max, which is a spacious fiveseater - so don’t feel you must go for the ‘Grand’ version. On test, I didn’t need to use the third row all that much, so the two spare seats often remained where they were. This was no bad thing, as without the third tier of seats in operation, the boot stays big. With the seats up, the load area is only good for about three bags of shopping, but with them down, you can knock yourself out filling it up. Not literally, you understand. Standard equipment on the Ford Grand C-Max is generous. It includes Ford’s Quickclear windscreen, sports-style seats, air conditioning and DAB radio. Upgrade to the flagship
Titanium X trim and you get a panoramic sunroof, bi-xenon headlights, a partial leather interior, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, and keyless start and entry. There’s also Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system, with an easy-to-read eight-inch touchscreen. But the best thing is that the Grand C-Max is a surprisingly good drive. I say ‘surprising’ because I was a man who used to dislike MPVs because of their apparent dearth of dynamism. The 2.0 TDCi 150PS Powershift model is smooth and has lots of low down shove. It works particularly well with the six-speed automatic transmission. In fact, it doesn’t drive like a bus – it behaves just like a decent 2.0 litre turbo diesel car should do. What’s more, it holds the road well, feeling planted on motorways and through twisty sections of tarmac. It’s also got a cheeky punch to it, with the Titanium X 2.0 TDCi 150PS Powershift variant able to do 0-62mph in 10.7 seconds. It’s efficient, too, consistently doing mid to late 40s real-world mpg. So, I’ve got to say, as a dad-of-three, I’m impressed. In fact, I’m seriously considering buying the Ford Grand C-Max now I’ve lived with it for a while. I just might not be able to dig deep enough for the flagship version.

Choir’s ‘Sing for Life’ concert raises over £10,000 for men’s health Bournemouth Hospital Charity is delighted to have been presented with a donation of over £10,000 from Bournemouth Male Voice Choir following their incredibly successful ‘Sing for Life’ concert. After an intensive ten week crash-course, over 50 amateur singers joined the Bournemouth Male Voice Choir to perform at the Poole Lighthouse – all to raise funds for men’s health projects at the Royal Bournemouth & Christchurch Hospitals. Almost 1,000 people attended the ‘Learn2Sing’ programme’s concert finalé – titled ‘Sing for Life’ – hearing the choir sing a range of songs from classical music to contemporary ballads. The tremendous efforts of the Choir have resulted in a fantastic total of £10,000 being raised from the concert. All funds generated will go towards new ‘blue light cystoscopy’ equipment at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital’s Urology Department, helping consultants to better identify and treat cancer cells in the bladder. Curtis, was treated for prostate cancer at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and says this played a role in his decision to join the Learn2Sing programme. “I joined the group because I wanted to learn to sing and when I found out it was to raise funds for Bournemouth Hospital Charity I wanted to help, because – it is no exaggeration to say – the Hospital saved my life,” says Geof. “It has been an excellent course with lots of voice training and breathing exercises. It’s a really good group of blokes and we were all there for the main purpose of trying to help the Hospital.” Bournemouth Hospital Charity Community Fundraiser, Sara Armstrong, says the Charity is incredibly grateful for the Choir’s efforts. “This donation is absolutely wonderful,” says Sara. “Thank you so much to everyone at the Bournemouth Male Voice Choir who took part in Learn2Sing and performed at the Sing for Life concert. It was a brilliant performance and we are so grateful for the £10,000 they have contributed towards our men’s health projects.”

A taste from the Costas – ideal served as lunch with a fresh green salad, and eaten al fresco (if the British Summer weather allows!) A perfect holiday reminder that’s quick and easy to prepare.
Ingredients for 4 servings 4 x large free range eggs 100g sliced chorizo 1 onion finely sliced 1 red/yellow pepper sliced 2 crushed garlic cloves ½ tsp paprika 400g can chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp. olive oil Chopped parsley
1. Pre-heat oven to 200c/Fan180C/400F/Gas Mark 6 2. In a heated pan, add olive oil and lightly cook the chorizo and onion for about 4 minutes until soft. Add the pepper and cook. 3. Stir in the paprika and garlic and cook for about a minute before adding the tomatoes to the pan. Simmer until all ingredients are soft. 4. Pour into an ovenproof dish, make four wells and carefully crack the eggs over the mixture into each well, cover with foil and bake in pre-heated oven for approx. 10 minutes or until the eggs are just set but the yolks should still be runny.
Serve with: Green Salad Crusty/toasted bread
5. Optional – you can add some parsley to top the baked mixture Serve with a fresh green salad of your choice with crusty or toasted bread, and enjoy. Try varying the ingredients for new tastes, for example with extra peppers, sliced potato or even baked beans.
