There are also our wonderful beaches and the amazing New Forest with those beautiful horses, ponies, cows and wildlife. We are so lucky to live in such a gorgeous part of our Island, with so much to see and do. At home there is always a lot to do. Gardening, housework and upgrading our environment to make the most of the space that we have. Do you need any help with all of that? News from Westminster You may have seen in the news before Christmas the slightly bizarre news that an animal welfare charity asked the village of Wool to change its name to “Vegan Wool”. Dorset is well known for its interesting place names, but I had never considered Wool to be one of them. I love the fact that places in my constituency such as Happy Bottom and Shitterton have never changed their names out of concern for political correctness –after all, why should we change ancient names which have endured quite happily for many generations. I grew up in the rural county of Herefordshire, which has many similarities to Dorset, though fewer strange names! I have lived in Dorset with my family for over 15 years now, and although I am aware that this makes us relative newcomers, it really is my home. Every week when I return to the constituency from Westminster my heart lifts as I leave the hustle and bustle of London behind, and I can breathe the fresh Dorset air. We are very blessed to live in such a beautiful part of the country – particularly with the Jurassic coast right on our doorstep. A recent article in the Guardian newspaper suggested that Wimborne is a place that has barely changed since 1951, and that it is a little dull. I have to disagree with their sentiments. One of the great things about being the MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole is that I get to see and hear about a wide range of events and businesses in this area. From cutting edge film special effects in Sandford, to award winning technological ideas in Poole, to craft brewing in Wimborne, and the volunteer-run traditional cinema in Wareham. It is no surprise that 2018 had a significant increase in visitors to Dorset - there is so much to visit, so much to see. Members of Parliament are often accused of living in a bubble, forgetting the people who they
represent. But Dorset is my home, and where my family live, and I spend as much time at home as Parliament allows. Yes, I spend most of the working week in London, but Dorset is never far from my thoughts. I am also kept grounded by the many emails and letters which I receive from you, my constituents, for which I thank you. I do not want to ignore the subject of the day, Brexit, but events in Westminster are moving so quickly at the moment that it would be pointless for me to comment in detail in this column, as it will be sure to be out of date by the time it is published! Talking about Wildlife...
Flock to Poole Harbour January is traditionally a dark and dismal month, but for over-wintering birds, this is a busy time of year, and Poole Harbour is one place we can guarantee will be bursting with (bird) life. During late summer and autumn birds start arriving back onto the Brownsea Island lagoon to over-winter. The unique location of the lagoon means it provides shelter and food sources in abundance, but its shallow waters mean it’s also still accessible for birds when the rest of the harbour is under deeper water. It’s also a thoroughfare for birds flying from far flung corners of the globe, who use the lagoon to rest and eat before migrating to other winter habitats. In the past we’ve recorded rare sightings of the semipalmated sandpiper, and in October we were treated to a sighting of the small sanderling visiting from its arctic breeding grounds. A favourite and frequent visitor to the lagoon is the spoonbill. For many years the spoonbill flock sizes have been building, and in 2014 it peaked to the largest flock of spoonbills ever seen in Britain, with 49 birds recorded in one flock. and easily identifiable guests are large flocks of waders, particularly avocets, which are distinguishable by their long blue legs and curved bill, perfect for si�ing through the mud for fish. They breed in east Anglia, France and Germany but the number seen on the Brownsea Lagoon is of international importance, where 1,200 or more can be seen in the winter. The black-tailed godwit breed in Iceland but can be seen through the year on Brownsea Island, with up to 2,500 visiting in the winter to feed on worms found in the lagoon. A unique partnership between Dorset Wildlife Trust, RSPB, National Trust and Birds of Poole Harbour has been set up to run boat trips around Poole Harbour during the winter months, so visitors can get a first-hand experience of the thousands of birds feeding and roosting on the Brownsea Island Lagoon, when the rest of the island is closed for winter. World-famous Illustrator at Wimborne Library A big treat is in store for the Friends of Wimborne Library - and guests - when Martin Brown - world-famous illustrator, cartoonist and author - will give a talk on Wednesday 16th January at 7pm at the library. Martin illustrated the hugely popular Horrible Histories series of books which have been sold worldwide. Other books he has illustrated include the Coping With series, Philip Pullman’s reissued New Cut Gang and the Harry & Oats series by John McLay. An author himself, Martin has written and illustrated his own fascinating and humorous nonfiction book - Lesser Spotted Animals - with another book on the way. Originally from Melbourne, Australia, Martin now lives in Dorset with his family. Definitely one for your diary! Come and meet him. Refreshments available.

Keeping it in the (Lions) family Last month saw the enrolment of two new members to the Wimborne and Ferndown Lions Club which brought the total of new members enrolled this summer to four and the club membership to 22. It has indeed been a bumper summer in more ways than one. The picture shows new members Lena Garrett and her partner Daniel Whittle, with other Lions watching as Daniel is “badged up� by Lion Ken Taylor. The other new members are Jane Beck and Roger Male.
It is worth noting that all four have helped to bring the club average age down significantly. This enrolment was a very special occasion as Daniel is the son of Lions legend Albert, who was a founder of the club in 1969 and served as a Lion for 48 years until his death in October 2016. Apart from being a champion speed skater in his youth, Albert held all the major offices of the club, being elected president three times and district governor at one time.

On Your Plot Planning veg for the year ahead If you’re new to veggie growing then this is the ideal time to start planning for the year ahead. Think about what space you have available for your crops and plan what you would like to grow and where.

• Plan your crops • Protect crops against the cold and from pests such as pigeons • Sew lettuces indoors • Start rhubarb crowns Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect time to plan what to grow and where this season. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that still leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about concentrating on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again. Remember also that you can use patio containers and grow bags to add extra growing space. Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great time of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room
for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the better and higher beds will mean less bending when you are planting out seedlings, harvesting or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil, awaiting planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plastic, or cardboard, to protect the soil against the harsh January weather. Crops still growing, such as purple sprouting broccoli, will benefit from protection against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CD’s). For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few lettuces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free conditions such as a shed, or polytonal before finishing off under cloches. If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot. Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before planting. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for starting tiny seedlings off in months to come as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disruption as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.

Naturally good...
ROASTED ACORN SQUASH Ingredients for 4 servings: 1 large acorn squash ½ tsp smoked paprika 2 cloves garlic (minced) Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ tsp mustard powder ¼ tsp onion powder 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp unsalted butter ½ red onion 1 tbsp olive oil 2 oz (60 g) soft goats cheese Small handful fresh mint Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 400F/200c 2. Cut the squash into 6 wedges leaving the skin on. Remove the seeds and place onto a baking sheet skin side down with the flesh facing up. Drizzle the wedges with olive oil and add the butter then sprinkle over the paprika, garlic, mustard and onion powder and season well. 3. Cover the tray with foil and make sure that it is pressed down well so that the wedges are sealed in. Place the tray into the oven to bake for 45 minutes; they will actually be steaming in their own juices at this point. 4. Meanwhile slice the onion and place into a frying pan with the olive oil, gently sauté the onion slices on a medium low heat until they are caramelized, set to one side. 5. After 45 minutes of cooking remove the squash from the oven and remove the foil cover, place back into the oven for 10 minutes to roast, after ten minutes top each wedge with caramelized onions and some crumbled goats cheese and place back into the oven for a further 5 to 10 minutes until golden brown. 6. Remove from the oven and transfer to a serving plate, sprinkle with freshly chopped mint and serve.
