News from Westminster This year, as for the past few years, I have held a Christmas card design competition for local schools. All the school in the constituency are invited to submit their designs, and then the best are chosen by a local artist. These are then made into my Christmas cards that are sent all across the constituency to charities, libraries, business and organisations. Look out for them!
multiple times a day. I was really pleased by the recent government announcement that Flash monitors will now be funded so that they are available for everyone who is eligible. This will make life for people with type 1 diabetes much easier.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of my job is when I get the chance to visit schools in the constituency, or speak to them when they visit Parliament. I was delighted that my office were able to arrange for one of our local schools, Bearwood School, to not only visit the Houses of Parliament, but also go into Downing Street and stand by the famous door of Number 10.

Parliament has been very eventful recently, but I have also been continuing with my constituency visits and surgeries. In Westminster I recently attended a Wildlife Trust reception and met young people from across the country involved in local wildlife trusts to hear their views about the natural environment. I was also pleased to be part of the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy project. This is a network of forest conservation initiatives to mark Her Majesty’s lifetime of service to the Commonwealth. I was given 5 trees to be planted in the constituency - two silver birch, two rowan, and a hazel which will be planted in the constituency.

Thinking Green! Sustainable living seems to have moved higher up on the news agenda’s in 2018. This year there won’t have been many of us who haven’t seen an image of a beach, home or away, littered with plastic, or a beloved marine creature wrapped up in plastic, inside and out. This raises the allimportant question: what can we do about it?
Being ‘green’ and caring for the environment isn’t easy – if it were, we wouldn’t be in this situation. The plastic that pollutes our seas exists because it’s made our lives easier in some way. For some of us, changing our habits to move to an alterative may seem more inconvenient or expensive a�er years of taking the ‘easy option’ which has been given to us. But there are things we can do in our daily lives which take little or no effort and could actually save you money in the process. 1. Reduce single-use plastic: Say no to drinking straws, say no to single use plastic bags and say no to plastic bottles. Did you know some of these items can hang around for over 500 years before they start to break down? Buy a reusable water bottle, go without the straw or buy a material shopping bag you can use time and time again. 2. Composting: Not only is composting your food scraps great for reducing waste, but it’s also beneficial for your garden and its
wildlife. Many councils offer a food waste collection bin – if you have one, make sure you use it!
3. Seafood sourcing: Do you know where your seafood is coming from? 90% of global fish stocks are either fully or over-exploited. Use the Good Fish Guide to find out which fish are the most and least sustainable before you make your purchase. www.mcsuk.org/goodfishguide/ search 4. Replace your coffee cup: Not all takeaway coffee cups are recyclable, so why don’t you help cut down on the waste and get your own reusable coffee cup? This will be the first Christmas since my partner and I separated and we are struggling to agree on contact arrangements for our children. For most parents, arranging contact with the children over the Christmas period can be a very simple process with both parents being able to agree to the times and dates. However, unfortunately in some cases this is not so simple and agreeing contact with your ex -partner can be very difficult. There are no definite rules as to how, or when, Christmas contact should take place, each case is different. However, the key consideration is ‘what is best for the children’ and perhaps in some cases it is appropriate to ask what the children would like. It is always best for parents to be proactive to plan contact over the Christmas period sooner, rather than later by either discussing the plans directly, or in writing. Think about alternating Christmas so the children will be with mum on Christmas one year, and with Dad the next. Alternatively consider dividing Christmas Day between both
parents to allow the children to see both. Communication is key to making arrangements, try to put your differences aside and work together. If you cannot communicate directly with your partner, then seek help from a family lawyer who can assist you with this. If in the unfortunate event contact arrangements cannot be agreed, then both parents may wish to consider family mediation, where a trained mediator will be present to help guide you towards a mutual agreement. If mediation cannot assist and all other avenues have been exhausted then you need to seek the help of a Court, however, please be aware this will be timely and costly.

Wimborne In Bloom Charities Fair Raises Almost £5,000 For Charity Twenty nine Local Charities and Organisations, manning thirty six tables took part in the Grand Charities Fair organised by Wimborne in Bloom and held in the Allendale Centre, Wimborne Minster on Saturday 10th November. Between them they raised almost £5.000 for the various causes they represented. Stalls included those raising money for Cystic Fibrosis & Macmillan Cancer Trust, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Vision Wimborne and Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. Wimborne in Bloom also had a successful table with four Hampers as prizes and also had the proceeds from the entrance money. Two of the Hampers were generously donated by Pamphill Dairy Farm Shop and Edwards Estate Agents. The Fair was opened by the Town Crier Chris Brown. Richard Nunn, Chairman of Wimborne in Bloom speaking after the event said, “that despite our ‘usual’ weather for the day, rain on and off all day apart from the first
hour, it did not appear to put people off coming to support the event”. He said, “a huge thank you to the Charities who had tables and for the Publics support of this now annual event in the Town Calendar. We had over 500 visitors and we hope that the Fair gave the various Charities and Organisations represented an opportunity to sell their wares and publicise themselves especially ahead of the Christmas Season”. Next year’s Charities Fair will be held on Saturday 9th November 2019.

Up, up and away... screaming away. It was a far cry from my blissful wander with nature. Fun though I have to say, but shush, don’t tell the boys that! Stephen and Hayden had a thrilling ride on Zip Wire, while I looked after the bags (a rather good excuse…). Stephen, who does not like heights, tried to get off rather quickly at the end and looked a little white, but I think he enjoyed it! Actually, both he and Hayden were grinning from ear to ear. It gave them that adrenaline rush these boys so yearn. Oh for that cup of coffee… The whole day was truly enjoyable. Tim Smit wanted to create a “symbol of optimism where ordinary people working together could do the nearly impossible.” What an amazing purpose. Nellie was truly impressed when we recounted our day to her. Ever optimistic herself and always happy when we have a family day out, she also grinned from headlight to headlight. Keeping it in the (Lions) family Last month saw the enrolment of two new members to the Wimborne and Ferndown Lions Club which brought the total of new members enrolled this summer to four and the club membership to 22. It has indeed been a bumper summer in more ways than one. The picture shows new members Lena Garrett and her partner Daniel Whittle, with other Lions watching as Daniel is “badged up� by Lion Ken Taylor. The other new members are Jane Beck and Roger Male.
It is worth noting that all four have helped to bring the club average age down significantly. This enrolment was a very special occasion as Daniel is the son of Lions legend Albert, who was a founder of the club in 1969 and served as a Lion for 48 years until his death in October 2016. Apart from being a champion speed skater in his youth, Albert held all the major offices of the club, being elected president three times and district governor at one time.

BOURNEMOUTH INTERNATIONAL CENTRE - WEDNESDAY 13 MARCH 2019 BBC presenter Anita Rani has been announced as host for Blue Planet II – Live In Concert, ahead of a 13-date UK & Eire arena tour in March 2019. A highly-respected TV personality, Anita Rani is a household name as one of the presenters of the BBC One series Countryfile, and regularly appears in and presents the BBC’s One Show. Anita has also presented programmes including Bollywood: The World’s Biggest Film Industry and Watchdog. In 2015 Anita was also a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. Rani said of narrating Blue Planet II – Live In Concert: “I am really honoured to have the role of host on the Blue Planet II Live In Concert arena tour. The TV series was such a fantastic and enlightening show and has really empowered society to view our oceans and environment with a great deal more care. I can’t wait to stand on stage with an 80-piece orchestra and huge screen showing some of that incredible Blue Planet II footage, it should be an amazing experience!” Accompanied by the original immersive television music score by Bleeding Fingers Music, composed by Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea and David Fleming, the concert will be performed live by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by Matthew Freeman. Hans Zimmer said of composing the music for Blue Planet II – “The idea is to depict the abundance of life as well as the movements and vibrations of the ocean. By using the orchestra in an unconventional way, we wanted to create ‘living’ chords that ebb and flow throughout the series”. Bringing the wonders and mysteries of the planet’s oceans and its inhabitants to the UK arena stage, Blue Planet II – Live In Concert will present a selection of incredible visuals from the BAFTA Award winning BBC One landmark series, highlighting the amazing natural
wonders of our blue planet in breath-taking detail, projected on a giant state of the art 4K Ultra HD LED screen. The concert will feature exciting visuals from the show including the now infamous Tusk fish, the Crab and Eel rock pool chase and the ‘folklore-turned-reality’ Sea Lion tuna hunt, to mention but a few. The Blue Planet II television show was the most watched TV programme of 2017 in the United Kingdom, reaching 37.6 million viewers. The UK & Eire arena tour are committed to reducing environmental impact. GUIDE Composting
No garden can have too much compost and rich, fertile soil is the key to great vegetables and plants. In these days of fortnightly bin collections (and the threat of slop buckets for our kitchens) why leave kitchen waste to fester in your wheelie bin when it can be put to good use? Find a corner somewhere in the garden to start a compost heap or, if space is limited, many councils offer bins for the purpose at reasonable prices. If building your own bin, it's best to put it on a soil base which will attract worms to start work on the heap. You could use old planks of wood or chicken wire supported by posts in each corner. This works well as it is important that air can get in to help the process. You need a good mixture of material to make good compost. If you just put in grass cuttings you'll end up with a foul, soggy mess so they should be mixed with shredded newspaper, pruning clippings (not the really woody stems)
and even cardboard. Annual weeds can go in as long as they haven't gone to seed but avoid perennial weeds like dandelions as even the smallest piece of root will produce another plant. Almost all vegetable waste from the kitchen can be used, but avoid meat, fish and cooked food as these may attract rats etc. Use crushed eggshells, used teabags, used kitchen towels and fruit and vegetable peelings. Keep the mixture damp. The aim is to end up with something that is dark, crumbly and sweet smelling and alive with worms. If you wanted to hurry up the process, you can buy accelerants from hardware shops and garden centres but a cheaper and just as efficient method involves collecting urine, diluting it with water and wetting the heap with it. Well, what do you imagine our ancestors used?

Wimborne Minster awarded a Silver Gilt Medal in the Britain In Bloom Competition The results are out... The Town of Wimborne Minster was awarded a Silver Gilt Medal in the RHS Britain in Bloom UK Finals at the Awards Ceremony held in Belfast.
The hosts included RHS President, Sir Nicholas Bacon, who gave an address whilst the Master of Ceremonies was James Alexander-Sinclair, garden designer, writer and broadcaster. Also present and involved was Chris Bavin, who presented the Britain in Bloom Series on BBC 2 in the summer and who is currently appearing on home economics series. There were eight other towns across the country competing with Wimborne in the Town Category and the winner was Linlithgow in Scotland.
The comments contained in the judges report included the fact that they were particularly impressed with how clean the town was.
They praised the efforts of the Wimborne in Bloom team of volunteers, well supported by local business and partners which makes a real difference to this beautiful Minster Town, the colourful displays complemented by sustainable planting makes it a delightful place to live and visit. Commenting, after return from Belfast, Chairman Richard Nunn expressed his very sincere thanks for the efforts and support of many in Wimborne which have been recognised by this nationally acclaimed award by the Royal Horticultural Society.

The annual competition received fewer than 300 entries from community gardening groups, villages, towns and cities from across the south, hoping to receive a special recognition for their commitment to horticulture and environmental conservation. Judges praised Harbour View and deemed it ‘a most impressive site’ and went on to say: “Out of all the cemeteries and crematoria visited by the judges over the years, Harbour View is an outstanding example of design, layout, maintenance, and customer service. There are no areas of improvements to be made, therefore Harbour View should continue to deliver the current service on offer, at these very high standards.” Steven Tapper, joint managing director at Tapper Funeral Service, said: “We are so proud to have won the overall crematoria category and to achieve gold for Harbour View. The team is committed to working tremendously hard to maintain the high standard of the facilities available for people during their time of need and this accolade affirms this. “It was important for us to design a crematorium which has a spiritual identity and meaning by linking the building to the natural surroundings and wildlife which lives at Harbour View. It is fantastic to see that the judges picked up on this and it is
reflected in their outstanding comments after their site visit.” Harbour View Crematorium is the first crematorium to open in Dorset for more than 30 years, and has seen a £4million investment in the county. It is only the fourth crematorium to open (with Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth being the other three). Method: 1. Use a sharp knife to remove the rough outer skin of the celeriac and then wash to remove any dirt. 2. Cut the celeriac into 1 inch cubes and place into a large heavy bottomed saucepan along with the diced onion and celery and cook on a medium heat with the butter for approximately 5 minutes without allowing it to color. This helps to release the flavors of the vegetables. 3. Next add the vegetable stock and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and continue to simmer for approximately 20 minutes until all of the vegetables are tender. 4. While the soup is cooking add the curry powder and paprika. 5. Once the vegetables are fully cooked remove the pan from the heat and use a stick blender to puree the soup until thick and creamy. At this point stir in the cream and taste the soup for seasoning, make sure you add the right amount of salt and pepper to help bring out the flavors of the soup. 6. If you like your soup a little spicier, then add some more curry powder. 7. To make the parsnip chips peel the parsnip and then use a vegetable peeler to slice the parsnip into thin long strips, deep fry in hot vegetable oil for 2 minutes until crispy and then drain onto paper towels and season with a little sea salt. 8. Place the soup back on the stove for a couple of minutes to make sure it’s piping hot. 9. To serve spoon the soup into bowls and then drizzle with a generous spoonful of crème fraiche and top with a sprinkling of parsnips crisps and freshly chopped parsley or micro shoots.
