Dear Wimborne & Merley residents, Oh my goodness, it is nearly Christmas 2015! I for one am not at all ready this year and I must get myself into the Christmas swing of things. We are going to Oxford to Stephen’s parents for a few days, so we are actually creating two Christmases, one in Oxford and another on my Birthday, 22nd December, to celebrate with my parents. It’s a good excuse to let our hair down! The Wimborne Directory has some good little articles for you this month including News from Westminster by Michael Tomlinson the MP for Mid Dorset & North Poole. Martin Lewis educates us on Christmas finance. ‘On Your Plot’ has scarves at the ready. There is a little history of The Priest’s House Museum. Stephen and I were delighted to do a personal interview with Charlie North-Lewis, the manager of the Tivoli Theatre and Wimborne Town Football Club would love you to join them at their next matches! News from Westminster It has been seven months since the election, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of serving as a Member of Parliament. When the results came in at 7.30am on the Friday morning, I had less than 72 hours before I needed to be in London to begin my new job in Westminster. I started as I mean to go on, by getting involved in local events. I went straight from breakfast after the count to a charity fundraising coffee morning in Bere Regis and then on to the local election count. On the Sunday evening, I caught the train to London, as I was expected in the House of Commons at 8am the next day. It has been a steep learning curve, both finding my way around the Palace of Westminster, and also negotiating the complicated rules and conventions of being an MP. I am here to serve my constituents, and I divide my time between London and Dorset. When Parliament is sitting, I am in London Monday to Thursday, speaking in debates, asking questions and meeting with Ministers, members of the public and organisations. I am in Dorset the rest of the week, holding surgeries, meeting local residents and attending a wide variety of events. I am keen to raise the profile of Dorset, highlighting both the beautiful area in which we live and work, but also to ensure that our challenges are not overlooked. In both my maiden speech, and at
a recent Prime Minister’s Questions, I asked about funding for our schools, which are amongst the lowest funded in the country. I also raised the issues of rural broadband speeds, and infrastructure such as roads, in particular the A351 and A350. I am often out and about in the constituency so please do stop and say hello if you see me. If you have an event that you would like me to attend, then please do let me know. Be naturally creative this Xmas When the days grow shorter and the festive season is looming, it’s easy to turn on the heating, don some fluffy slippers and put your feet up, but at Dorset Wildlife Trust we believe there’s a great reason for dressing up warm, putting on the wellies and getting outside in the fresh air! Before the advent of mass-produced Christmas decorations (often on sale from late August!) people gathered their own natural foliage, berries and cones to make table centrepieces and wreaths, and this was part of the annual ritual that made the run-up to Christmas such fun. There’s a wealth of natural material out there just waiting to be used to wonderful effect inside your home, so why not rekindle the joy of using natural resources in your own family, and get some good healthy exercise at the same time? Evergreens such as holly, ivy and conifers are fairly easy to find when you’re out on a winter walk, but make sure that you’re not taking anything from private property, and also that you only take a small amount from each bush or tree. You can also get creative with things like fir cones, acorns and nuts that have fallen onto the ground. Once you’ve collected your raw materials, you don’t need to be a craft expert to create something lovely. Our fabulous festive workshop with Jules Hosford on 14 November will give you all the guidance you need in order to make your own stunning wreaths and table flowers, personalised just for you and your loved ones.
If art rather than sculpture is more your style, get inspired to design your own Christmas card with artist Julie Herring on 12 November. This is a chance to draw directly from nature in The Great Heath. Don’t worry, though, if you can’t get outside either for materials or inspiration, because Carla Taylor will help you make your own gorgeous hand-made felt decorations for your tree and home, including robins, baubles and more, on 22 November. Jeep Cherokee 2.2 Diesel

It is a vital market for the company because we Brits buy more Cherokees than anywhere else in Europe or Africa. The American auto maker aims to echo this success in 2016. But how is it going to do it? Well, one way is to give the admired Cherokee line-up more ‘oomph’. So, that’s why the good-looking Jeep is now obtainable with 185hp and 200hp outputs. It offers an appreciably wider spread of pulling power from low revs, giving greater bang for your buck. But it isn’t just about enriched performance, the 2.2 Cherokee oil-burner now offers better fuel economy than the departing two-litre 170hp automatic lump. Available only with Jeep’s smooth changing nine-speed automatic gearbox, and paired to the company’s ActiveDrive four-wheel-drive systems, the all new Cherokee 2.2 versions are inundated with equipment. The range now has more spec as standard, including an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, an automatic anti-dazzle rear-view mirror with built-in microphone and an electric tailgate. Perhaps more significantly, though, all Cherokees score highly with safety – achieving the maximum 5-stars in Euro NCAP’s tough tests. But back to the new engine under the bonnet. It is assembled for our market in the Pratola Serra plant, near Avellino, Italy. Armed with the 4x4 Jeep Active Drive I system, the Cherokee 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp reaches a maximum speed of 127mph. It accelerates from zero to 62mph in 8.5 seconds, has a typical combined fuel consumption figure of 49.6mpg and CO2 emissions of 150g/km. The Cherokee 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp with Active Drive II and
low-range has a top speed of 126mph, 0-62mph time of 8.7 seconds, and a combined fuel consumption of 46.3mpg, with 160g/km of CO2 emissions. Behind the wheel of the quickest diesel – the 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp Limited 4WD automatic with Active Drive I - I found everything rapid enough. Certainly, the more commanding motor is a real step-up from the unit it supersedes. You no longer have to work the engine like a dog to make spirited progress. It is even quite soothing when you’re not pushing the pace. Undeniably, one of the Cherokee’s fortes is its ride. For a midsized sport utility vehicle (SUV) with off-road know-how, the Cherokee handles adeptly. The only time you notice the Jeep get a little unsettled is if you throw it in to a bend. Then there is perceptible body roll. The new 2.2 MultiJet II engine certainly places the Jeep Cherokee towards the crest of the mid-size SUV class for pace, poise and proper efficiency. It is no BMW X3 but it brings the fight to the likes of Honda’s CR-V – and is sure to put the fabled motor manufacturer on track for even more success in the United Kingdom next year. The Priest’s House has been a home and business to many families over the centuries. However, the name of the property first appeared in the 1880s and no evidence has been found to prove that it ever was a priest’s house. The oldest part of the building, a stone and flint house, was probably begun in the early 16th century. Additions and alterations were made throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. The building’s height was increased, the timber framed south wing added (the ground floor of which today is occupied by the Tourist Information Centre), the courtyard at the front of the property was built on, and a single storey kitchen and store constructed at the back. In the late 17th century the property was lived in by John Bowdidge but by the next century it was shared by four different people. Three of the four parts of the house were reunited later in the 18th century, at which time Elizabeth King was continuing to run her husband’s business as a mercer dealing in fine imported silks and local woollen cloth. From the 19th century the ground floor provided retail space for a grocer, ironmonger and stationer/bookseller. The garden is sheltered by brick walls, which mark property boundaries and a medieval burgage plot. In the 18th century the bottom of the garden appears to have been an orchard, while today’s flowerbeds and lawns were added in the early 20th century. Hilda Coles (1907-1987), granddaughter of the first ironmonger in the building, continued her grandfather’s business until 1960. Two years later, along with Wimborne Historical Society, Hilda opened the Priest’s House Museum.

Some friendly advice on...
Inheritance
We often get clients asking us how they can protect their assets and ensure they leave some inheritance for their children when they die. This is particularly important for people who have a partner who is not also the parent of their children or if they are concerned about care fees reducing the value of their assets. Most parents want to leave at least some share of their assets or property to their children whilst also providing a home for their surviving spouse. This can be achieved in a number of ways and underlines the importance of having a properly drafted Will. One option is of course to leave some or all of your assets in your Will directly to your children. This works well where both spouses have independent assets and the survivor does not require the deceased spouse’s property or assets to live following their death. This is unusual and is rarely applicable to the types of clients we deal with most. Alternatively many people leave everything to their surviving spouse and trust that the survivor will leave everything in turn to their children. But there is always a risk that the surviving spouse remarries and leaves everything to their new spouse, falls out with the children or simply changes their mind. A better option would be to create a life interest trust within your Will. This means that following the death of the first spouse, some or all of the deceased’s property or assets are left to their spouse for their life and, ultimately, to the first spouse’s children following the death of the second spouse. Such a trust can be created with very flexible terms meaning that
capital can be advanced to the surviving spouse from the life interest trust, they can receive income from the funds invested in trust during their lifetime and they can even move to a different property as their home with permission of the trustees. A life interest trust can even be created where the family home is owned jointly by both spouses. The spouse that dies first can leave only their share in the property, usually half, to their surviving spouse for their lifetime, and to their children on second death. The key requirement to enable this to happen is to ensure that any property is held as ‘Tenants in Common’, which creates divisible, definable shares in the property, rather than as ‘Joint Tenants’, where the parties both own 100% of their property. If the property is held as Tenants in Common it means that it will pass not by the law of survivorship to the other Joint Tenant, but under the terms of the deceased’s Will giving effect to the life interest trust. These options can also be applicable even where both spouses are parents of their joint children but they wish to protect any inheritance due to their children. Should one spouse go into a care home at any point if the other spouse has predeceased, their share of any real property will not form part of the surviving spouse’s assets for calculations by the local authority, therefore protecting that share of inheritance for their children. Trusts can seem a daunting legal minefield, but with proper guidance they can provide a useful way of leaving assets in a Will that can protect your assets from uncertain future events.

The Dorset Publications Camper Van A huge advantage of having a campervan is the ease of just deciding to “go out” whatever the time of day, or night, and get some space, relax and enjoy our wonderful English countryside. Stephen and I had been working pretty hard and decided we deserved a break so what better excuse than to put milk in the fridge, coffee in the cupboard and let Nellie take us for a drive! We all live such busy lives that going for a drive and taking a walk can be a great therapy. Holt Heath is owned by the National Trust and belongs to the Kingston Lacy Estate. Situated 4 miles north east of Wimborne Minster, it is quite a magnificent expanse of dry and wet heathland, bog and ancient woodland with views all the way to the Isle of Wight. It was a gorgeous afternoon as we parked a very contented Nellie in a small parking bay just on the roadside. Stephen and I went for a slow, leisurely walk along

the grassy path. Livestock have actually been reintroduced to this 400 hectares of heathland. Their grazing is helping to reduce the shrubs and also control the coarser grasses which allows rare plants and species to thrive and flourish. While we were there we saw cattle, wild horses and ponies….as well as several cyclists. There is a circular route with the largest walk being 6 miles long and taking up to 3 hours. Oh what a shame, we only had 2 hours before we had to pick Hayden, our son, up from school… or was that a good excuse? The smaller route is just 3 miles long. It is also possible, as Stephen and I can attest, to take an even shorter route if you are not feeling quite so energetic. I really must be getting old! To be honest on a good day, picnic and a bottle of water in hand, this is a perfect spot to get away from it all and really enjoy the

peace and quiet while observing nature at its best. Ironically once we were back in Nellie doing just that, enjoying the serene ambience with a cuppa from the whistling kettle, a driver came along and parked right in front of us with thumping music blasting out of the car! I couldn’t believe it. I waited a while believing whoever it was wouldn’t stay long. All my hopes of a tranquil couple of hours were fearfully fading away. It was obvious after ten minutes that this person was staying right there. I got out of the van and carefully approached the car. We do live in a democracy, so I did hold back what I really wanted to say (us English are very good at that!) and quietly asked if the music could be turned down, as we could only hear the rather loud beating drums. Don’t you just love it. The lady was very good and the music was turned down. A short while later the car drove off. Phew! Nellie, who had gotten rather tense with all of this, breathed a sigh of relief.

My serenity was back and I was once again able to take in the silence and calmness that I was seeking. It must be all the fishing I did with Dad when I was younger. All those blissful lazy days with nothing to worry about, no cares in the world and surrounded by chirpy singing birds, butterflies, family picnics, the gentle plop of the float landing in the water. Those were the days! Back to present times. This area of heathland really is gorgeous. If you are looking for tranquillity and nature, not too far off the beaten track, then I highly recommend you take a drive and witness the countryside in its glory. If you are looking for a disco, this is not the place to be… or maybe it is… if a car parks in front of you! Where will Nellie go next…? By Debbie Corney

Lucy’s recipe corner Little mincemeat puffs
If you want something smaller than a mince pie these make a great alternative.
INGREDIENTS per person
200g puff pastry 100g icing sugar 1 star anise 2 cloves 200g mincemeat Handful of plain flour for rolling
Pop the star anise, cloves and icing sugar into a blender or grinder and blitz until the herbs are mixed in with the sugar. Get the oven on to 180°c/160°c fan Roll out the puff pastry into a rectangle 30cm x 20cm and spread out the mincemeat over the top. Take each of the longest sides and, one at a time, roll carefully into the middle. Put into the freezer for about 15 minutes until firm. Slice into 1cm thick slices, sprinkle with the spiced sugar and bake for 12-15 minutes.

On Your Plot Scarves at the ready
December is perhaps the one month where, in the build up to Christmas with roaring fires and shorter days, even the hardiest of gardeners may struggle to get out there and do the necessary for their plots. December often means hard frosts and you need to harvest your winter cabbages, celery and cauliflowers this month. Parsnips and swedes are pretty hardy so if you are a bit overrun with your crop you can keep these in the ground until you need them. If bad weather is forecast then keep some straw handy to cover them over and stop the ground from freezing thema in. Make sure that you check your stored crops for any sign of disease and remove any that look problematic. If the ground isn’t too sticky then this is also a great time to get out your hoe and work between your vegetable crops. Look out for any plants which might have been lifted by frost and press them gently back into the ground. Keep an eye on your Brussels too - these should be starting now so try cooking them in different ways in your meals before the ‘big day’ (adding a spot of garlic can make all the difference) until you find something suitable to go with the bird. You don’t just have to eat them on Christmas Day you know! Be mindful of any snowfall this month or in future weeks and help out your plants and shrubs as best you can by brushing off any settled snow. This helps to prevent any damage with branches breaking under the weight. Just make sure you if you have small children they don’t take this as an opportunity to flick snow everywhere otherwise your quiet gardening time could suddenly turn into an impromptu snowball fight! Birds at this time of the year need all the help they can get too. There are some great plants that you can introduce to help them as well as popping out the traditional feeders. These
include hawthorn, holly, beriberi and indeed your holly can double up as a craft project for indoor decorations over the festive season. If you are planting these types of shrubs for our feathered friends then do try and put them somewhere quiet in the garden where the birds won’t be frightened off. Sit back at your window and watch them feed contentedly whilst you enjoy the view. Why not get out a few gardening books, grab a cup of tea and imagine how you’d like your garden to look next summer? More or less vegetables? Bigger shrubs, more colour? Whatever you choose, pat yourself on the back for all the hard work you’ve done this year and think how green your fingers really could be!

Yet, while it is far too early for celebration, it’s never too early for preparation. Many of the key Christmas must-dos to save money only work if you do them early enough. So now we’ve far fewer than 100 days to go, here’s my Christmas (or Chanucah or Eid) savers checklist. Earn 5% cashback on your Christmas shopping If you’re going to be spending for Christmas, you might as well do it on a card that pays you every time you spend on it. The no annual fee AmericanExpress.com Amex Everyday credit card pays 5% cashback on your first three months’ spending (maximum £100) followed by up to 1.25% after. Get it now and this falls during the high spend Christmas period. The cashback won’t be paid until a year later, but, then again, that’s a bonus for next Christmas. Set up a direct debit to repay IN FULL each month to avoid the 22.9% rep APR. There’s a full list of options at www.mse.me/cashback, plus an eligibility checker that tells you your odds of getting each card. Agree to not give unnecessary presents Far too many people do tit-for-tat giving, and using the end result is tat. So now’s the moment to agree with friends, family and colleagues to cut back on giving this year. Why not save it for just the immediate family? Too many people end up with goods they’ll never use, so why waste our cash out of some peer-pressure filled obligation. And even those who want to be generous to those with less than them, remember by giving to someone that person often feel obligated to buy back which can do more harm than help. Far better to go, er, cold turkey, and have a more austere time (Christmas is just one day, after all). That said, if you’ll borrow anyway, at least do it right. So, if you give up a £2 coffee every day at work you’ll save £132, or cut back on an £8 pack of cigarettes every week and it’s £104. I’m not saying you must give up everything completely, but make an active choice: would you prefer the cash at Christmas or the daily treat? Don’t use Tesco vouchers for festive food A £10 Tesco voucher is worth just £10 in-store. Yet you can double or triple its value on items in its www.tesco.com/clubcard/deals/ brochure (£10 becomes £30) on gift items such as Goldsmiths jewellery or Merlin annual theme park passes. Plus every few months its ‘double-up’ scheme gives 2x value year-round on selected items in-store and on Tesco Direct, including fragrance, toys and electricals. Tesco won’t confirm for sure when it’ll next be on, but it’s likely to be around the beginning of November. Warning! Don’t ignore your household enquiry form Every UK household is being sent a Household Enquiry Form from their local council to check the right people are registered to vote – and if you repeatedly fail to fill it in you can be fined up to £1,000.

Talk of the Town: Tivoli Theatre
Through the eyes of Charlie North-Lewis The Tivoli Theatre has been a part of the town’s heritage since 1936 and having survived the threat of demolition in 1979, it celebrated twenty successful years in November 2013. At the helm for the last thirteen and a half years has been Charlie North-Lewis and I was lucky enough to catch him for a chat at The King’s Head in Wimborne, despite his busy schedule. Debbie: What attracted you to the Tivoli? Charlie: To answer that, I need to start right back at the beginning... Having been educated here in Dorset at Milford Abbey School and Forres Prep School in Swanage, I went to drama school in Guildford. I had always wanted to play in a rock band, so spent some time in the Oxford area “living my dream”, until a car accident damaged my drum kit and I decided it was time to head back to the theatre. I had a fear of auditions, so looked to get a job as an Assistant Stage Manager, where I might get the opportunity to play walk-on parts or perhaps to understudy some of the other roles. My first real job was at Blazes, the cabaret club in Windsor, as a sound engineer. Yes, you might be thinking that this was not what I had trained for... but the manager liked me and knew he could train me to do it as he wanted it done, rather than have some “know-it-all” trying to do it their way. As the club became more successful and bigger and bigger acts started playing the venue, they would bring in their own crew and my role became somewhat redundant. At this point I realised that I really wanted the challenge of doing the sound for acts that used a full orchestra. As it turns out, I was offered a job thanks to a contact that got me into the merchandising side of touring acts, such as Rick Wakeman, the Rolling Stones and the Steve Miller Band.
Charlie North-Lewis with Debbie I emigrated to Toronto, Canada, in 1983 having married a Canadian who did not want to live in the UK. There I went for a job interview at Canada’s Wonderland, their answer to Disney’s Magic Kingdom, which was owned by the Hanna-Barbera studios. In the interview, I was the oldest applicant and I didn’t want to boast, but tried to honestly impress and show my credentials by commenting on some of the acts that I had toured with, including Tears for Fears. I don’t think that those doing the interview really believed me, as I was hired... as an usher! Feeling frustrated and undervalued, I talked to my wife and friends and they said that I should complain, which I did. I was simply told to “hang on in there.” During the first season, Eric Clapton came to play at the venue and I was doing as much as I could, especially as I had a child on the way and needed to make ends meet. One Saturday, I was asked to take a message to the General Manager, who I had not even met. I knocked on his office door and went in. Who should be there, but Eric Clapton’s tour manager, Peter Jackson... who had also been the tour manager for the Steve Miller Band where I had done the “swag”. As Peter was also a Brit, there was a lot of

43 colourful language and bro-hugs, which raised the General Manager’s brows and when invited to have coffee on the following Monday, I was immediately promoted! Through the next few years, I managed several venues around Toronto, including bringing the Elgin Theatre “back from the dead” in 1985 with a very successful run of Cats. In addition to that I also “set up” the Regent Theatre for A Little Shop of Horrors, under the same producers. News of this success reached the producer of Shenandoah at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and I ended up being “head-hunted” for the theatre manager there, but my heart was still really at the Elgin and I ran both whilst the Elgin underwent a full restoration. Then the recession of the early 90s really hit the entertainment business and the theatre became more of a touring house, rather than a production house. During this time, I returned to the UK, managing to land a job at BAFTA. This may in part be due to the fact that I wrote my car off on the way to the interview, but still showed up on time! This was a great experience and I got to see many famous faces in the Academy, such as Dame Judi Dench and Sir Richard Attenborough. However, I really wanted to get back to theatre and saw the advert for the Tivoli. I sent off my application and soon received a phone call. I discovered that this was an organisation run by volunteers who had realised that it needed someone with experience to “take it to the next level”, which was the very direction given to me by the Chair of the Trustees when I started after a long job interview in May 2002.
Shortly after I started I received a call from a Led Zeppelin tribute act and I said “no, thank you.” However, they persisted and I received what almost looked like a shoe box sized press parcel, including a T-shirt, mug and proper headed paper. I noticed that they came from near where I grew up and so I decided they could play, but they had to hire the theatre... It was almost a sell-out! Since then, we have drawn the likes of Michael McIntyre, Eddie Izzard, Jack Dee, Ed Byrne, Al Murray, Jim Davidson and many other comedians. I was told by Dave Gorman’s tour manager that the Tivoli is well known as an excellent venue on the comedy circuit. In fact, Al Murray came and played for a week before his full arena tour. When he arrived on the Monday, I asked him what he was going to do and he said “I haven’t a clue!” But when he came out on the Friday night, he announced to the audience “Thank you Wimborne, I now have a show!” Debbie: Is there anyone you would really like to see play here? Charlie: We have had Charlie Watts play here, but I would really like to see Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood too! Debbie: What changes have you noticed over your time here? Charlie: When I started, the big bands playing the music of Glenn Miller or other swing numbers were very popular, but over time the audiences diminished. Even the music of the 50s and 60s started not being well attended. We needed to draw younger people in to the venue.
