Dudsbury Golf Club Seniors Section Raises £3119 For John Thornton Young Achievers! The Seniors Captain of Dudsbury Golf Club, Rob Bury, selected the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) as his ‘Charity of the Year’ in 2020 and due to the restrictions with Covid the partnership ran for two years. Despite all the challenges Rob (pictured right below) presented Pete Thornton, Chairman of the JTYAF (pictured left), with a cheque for a staggering £3119! To raise such a huge amount mid pandemic, is an outstanding achievement and the JTYAF would like to thank all those who organised and took part in the Charity Golf Days. The amount of time and effort that goes into ensuring that these events are a success cannot be underestimated and is greatly appreciated. This fantastic support will make a massive difference to the opportunities that will be provided for local young people in the year ahead. All funds raised will help to provide bursaries and scholarships for local young people from a wide array of youth organisations directly supporting their personal development and the pursuit of their ambitions. As an example of the difference an amount of £3119 will make, these are some recent awards that the Dudsbury Seniors Section fundraising would have made possible: • A young man from Ferndown Upper School who is a musician with the Bournemouth Youth Marching Band, has an ambition to join the Royal Marines Corp Band. He will use his scholarship to buy a cornet.

Park in Devon. Another 5 disadvantaged pupils will also visit the New Forest Water Park. • A Looked After Child who experiences many difficulties will take part in a residential activities’ week at the Land and Wave Centre in Swanage. The trip would not be possible without JTYAF support and will help to raise his spirits and boost his confidence. Rob commented, “I have been privileged to know Peter and Linda Thornton for over thirty years, so it was both an honour and a pleasure to nominate the “John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation” as my charity for the duration of my Seniors Captaincy of Dudsbury Golf Club. The amount raised, in spite of the pandemic, was a tribute a young man, born and raised locally, who gave his life for his country and in whose memory young people are being helped to achieve their goals. Grateful thanks are due to the members of the Seniors Section at Dudsbury Golf Club for their generosity” Pete Thornton commented, “Young people are experiencing many challenges in these uncertain and difficult times and need our support more than ever before. Wimborne Minster Pancake Race 2022 For only the third time since the Wimborne Minster Pancake Race was revived in 1998 it had to take place inside the Minster on Shrove Tuesday 1st March due to the prevailing weather conditions. This did not stop a good number of people attending to cheer on those taking part. Three local schools participated Wimborne First, four pupils in one race with the winner being Ren Turner, Dumpton, nineteen runners across five heats and a final with the winner being Luca Dampney and Allenbourn Middle with twelve runners across three heats and a final with the winner being Kianah Hickson. Five toddlers took part in the Toddlers Race with Charlie Craythorne being declared the winner. Then came the Wheelchair entries from Streets Meadow. Due to space restrictions the four entries were pushed up and down the centre of the nave on a timed basis. The winner was Trevor pushed by Julie-Anne Ricketts and he won a large sack of wild bird food for Streets Meadow which had been kindly donated by the Wimborne Pet Centre. In the adult races there were ten runners and all ran round the inside of the Minster individually on a timed basis. Runners

included members of staff from MJP Law, The Minsters Rector the Revd Canon Andrew Rowland and the Curate the Revd Nick Wells but all were beaten by a previous winner Scott Taylor with a time of 12.50 seconds, Nick Rawling was second with Molly Doola coming in at third place. Scott received the John Loader Memorial Cup from Kathy and Martyn Curtler to hold for a year and a Serving Jug from Dorset View/Viewpont Magazine presented by Marilyn Barber the News Editor to retain. Town Mayor Cllr Kelly Webb and the Town Crier Chris Brown started off all the races with the Mayor presenting the monetary prizes to all those winners in the Under 18s races.. Number 9 On the Green in Cook Row provided Pancakes to be purchased both before and after the races and also assisted with the sponsorship of the schools races. A collection taken for Minster Funds raised £67.62 Anthony Oliver who along with a small team organises the annual race said afterwards, “that in spite of the weather we had an enjoyable morning and there were a lot of smiling faces. Let’s hope for better weather next year when Shrove Tuesday falls on 21st February 2023 so get into training in good time. Anthony also thanked his Organising Team and all those who had helped in any way including the Mayor, Town Crier, those with the registration of the Entries, Stewarding, Collecting, setting up the Public Address, Ringing the Pancake Bell and manning the First Aid in case of need. All the World’s A Stage One of our greatest creative filmmaking forces, Kenneth Branagh, looks back over three decades of big-budget production. Kenneth Branagh is a behemoth of the major film project – a man who subscribes to the ‘more is less’ principle of movie-making, and who has absolute faith in the essence that big budgets make successful movies. That alone, offers a peculiar contradiction. After all, the 61-year-old is someone so creatively and artistically enriched, from within, that a script and a stage would all but suffice given the Belfast-born actor, producer and director’s ability to connect an audience to an idea. How else can you explain his effortless excellence across so many Shakespeare projects, from Henry V (1989) – for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor

and Best Director – through to Much Ado About Nothing (1993), Othello (1995), Hamlet (1996), Love’s Labour’s Lost (2000), and As You Like It (2006). And yet, his big-screen work away from the Bard goes the other way, with high-quality, mass-scale projects that refuse to be held back by budget – consider Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Valkyrie (2008), the blockbuster superhero film Thor (2011), Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014) and Murder on the Orient Express (2017) (2017), and of course Death on the Nile, this year. “Death on the Nile is an immense project and I have always been confident that all the investment and commitment would pay itself back, both financially and artistically. “It’s one of those films that could have been made on the cheap, but it’s the fine details that really begin to shine when you have a bigger budget to play with. It’s the luxury of doing

something really good and knowing you have the time to go back and take another look at something if it hasn’t quite come through the way you had expected. It’s quality control. “Ultimately, I feel extremely lucky to be making the sorts of movies I have over the past couple of decades, and to find the backers who believe in these projects, because it’s not always been like that,” he says, referencing the industry’s lack of money and interest in filmmaking when he was first getting started. “It was a real famine back in the Eighties - so few movies were being made. These days there are sets the size of Soho and investment in filmmaking is so huge, and I would like to think the output validates that; but as ever, it’s the audience who are there to judge, and that’s the way it should be.”

Born Free Exciting outdoor activities that the whole family can find joy in as spring beckons us back into nature. It’s the season where we can approach the outdoors with confidence – where a flicker of the curtains doesn’t bring about nervous shudders and mental images of trudging across Antarctica. Family time, anywhere, is important and valuable, but around nature, and when exploring our surroundings whilst letting the benefits of fresh air immerse our bodies and minds, it can provide some of the very best and most valuable experiences. Here are six suggestions that will be guaranteed to satisfy enthusiastic young minds. Foraging Foraging is a wonderful opportunity to explore the countryside. Even if you don’t eat anything that you find, foraging still opens young minds to the possibility of self-sustainable living and an appreciation of food in its natural setting. There are also an abundance of ‘pick your own’ farms in the UK, which evades the possibility of eating

berries or mushrooms that are not meant for consumption. Outdoor arts and craft Whether gathering shells, pinecones and leaves to create art at home, giving them use of a camera to photograph animals and plants, or even just arming the kids with a plain notebook and some pencils to capture their surroundings, there are many ways in which you can make time outdoors that bit more stimulating for young minds. Treasure hunting Using GPS and a dedicated smartphone app, Geocaching is essentially a global treasure hunt for ‘caches’ – small waterproof containers that are hidden outdoors. Using location coordinates and clues, hunters must hunt out these concealed vessels and upon ﬁnding them, either write their name and date of discovery or (in the case of larger caches) swap the trinket within for something else. Crabbing or bug hunting Those lucky enough to live near the seaside or a suitable body of water will want to try crabbing. Using

a line and bait – crabs love bacon! – you can reel in your catch and place it in a bucket for closer inspection before returning it to its briny haven. If you’ve got no water nearby but lots of greenspace, simply go on a bug hunt instead, cataloguing any minibeasts you encounter. Hiking Britain has an abundance of beautiful countryside and you can ﬁnd plenty of walks to suit your ability in either a guidebook of your local area, or online. It’s always worth having a destination in mind… like a picturesque village or a country pub for much-needed libation, or even a secluded place to sit and eat a picnic. Discovering From castle and monastery ruins, iron age encampments and even disused railway lines, open up your map, see what’s around you, and venture out to explore off the beaten track.

Barn Owls: The Return... The silent flight of a barn owl is a majestic and wonderful sight for any nature lover. With the features of their heart shaped faces and deep black eyes, they are an unmistakable icon of the countryside in the UK. However, it may surprise you to hear that the odds are stacked against these wonderful creatures, with a long list of challenges and problems they face daily. Firstly, there’s the two things we all need: food and shelter. Declining or unsuitable habitat means that both of these vital elements to their survival immediately puts them at threat. Suitable roosting sites, and then good quality unimproved grassland for their prey to live (such as voles and mice) can be hard to come by if the quality of the habitat close to them isn’t good enough. During the breeding season, they need to have a plentiful food source within 1km of their roost – their chicks can eat their own body weight in food in one night! The next challenge is overcoming the physical limitations of the barn owls’ wings, which aren’t waterproof so they can be adversely affected by the weather. They are also unable to store a lot of body fat, and therefore are particularly prone to starvation during prolonged periods of severe weather or when there is shortage of prey. However, there are sites where barn owls can thrive. One of those is 18

Dorset Wildlife Trust’s nature reserve, Lorton Meadows, in Weymouth, where we have seen many chicks fledge each year as a result of the excellent habitat surrounding the barn owl box. Careful habitat management carried out all year round by DWT conservation staff and volunteers means that this site can provide the food and shelter barn owls need to survive. Scratches and scrapes Five road features that are causing abrasions to your car without you knowing it. 1. Weather You may consider that weather is one thing that’s seemingly unavoidable when you run a car, but keeping it out of the elements (either in a garage or covered) can actually prolong your paintwork lifespan by a considerable amount. That’s because rainfall in coastal areas can carry high salt levels, which leave awkward and challenging water stains; while excessive sun may cause paintwork to fade and look worn. 2. Cleaning techniques It may always seem like a good idea to keep paintwork looking pristine, but there are number of abrasive cleaning techniques that, in the long-term, will do your prized possession more harm than good. These include the use of inappropriate brushes and jet

QUIRKY FACTS by Mica Bale True or false? Dorset was once home to Frankenstein? Who fancies another delve into the region’s quirkiest facts this April? With the warmer weather promised and longer days and nights, our beautiful county has plenty to enjoy this Spring. In fact, why not grab a glass of something in your awakening garden and enjoy another handful of interesting facts?

One of the very first people to send a message using a new telegraph machine invented by Marconi was Alfred Downing Fripp, born in Blandford Forum. Fripp was in the company of Queen Victoria herself! A royal surgeon later to King Edward VII and George V. Reportedly, Fripp was a highly dedicated doctor. During his honeymoon, the Dorset local was called back to attend the young Prince of Wales who had injured his knee. The Fripps would go on to become favoured by the royal householder before becoming fast friends with Marconi. Together with the Prince of Wales, Fripp would be the first to make use of Marconi’s newest invention.

It could be said that Dorset was home to its very own Bloomsbury group! The county has always been praised for attracting authors and artists however Chaldon Herring in particular is known for its creative inhabitants. Essayist Llewelyn Powys and his wife suﬀragist Alyse George. The village was also home to Elizabeth Muntz, Valentine Ackland and Philippia Powys (Llewelyn's sister) among many others.

Did you know that the face of the original Frankenstein lived out his days in the village of Bramshott? Renowned for playing the instantly recognisable title character in the original 1931 Frankenstein film, Boris Karloff had had several roles in the era of silent movies. It was not until his role as the immensely popular Frankenstein that Karloff began to gain fame with audiences and in the years that followed, Karloff went on to reprise his role several times. No doubt the residents of Bramshott were well used to Frankenstein wandering their village!

Have you visited the ruins of Rufus Castle? Located on the Isle of Portland, the castle is believed to be the oldest on the island. The remains that can be seen today largely date back to the 15th century however the castle is thought to have been named after King Wiliam II who was also known as William Rufus. Although the castle is not in its former glory, the Grade I listed structure is still a fine example of a so-called ‘Bow and Arrow’ keep which was designed especially for skilled archers to be able to defend the structure without risking themselves.

Did you know that Queen Joan, the daughter of King John and wife of Alexander II of Scotland was buried in Tarrant Abbey? Dying relatively young, her place at court had never been strong. Her marriage alliances had always been a matter of great contest and as the daughter of a king, the question of who she would marry was not a simple matter. Eventually she would marry Alexander II of Scotland however the marriage produced no children and was not believed to have been a happy one. Dying before she'd even reached the age of 30, Joan was buried, reportedly now in a golden tomb, at Tarrant Abbey which at the time was considered to be one of the richest Abbeys in the country. The precise location of her tomb is believed to be unknown despite its historical prominence. A sad end for the daughter of one of England's most famous kings.

Increasing numbers of homeowners are choosing to hold their properties as tenants in common to reduce inheritance tax and help protect their share from care fees The Property Protection Trust Will package is based around how you hold the ownership of your home. All good estate planning nowadays considers the difference between owning your home as joint tenants or as tenants in common. If you own your home as Joint Tenants; when one of you dies the ownership of the home passes by the Law of Survivorship and not by your Will. Therefore, the surviving partner will automatically own 100% of the property. This sounds right to most people. BUT should the surviving partner need care in the future, the Local Authority can take everything they own (including their home) to pay for the care fees, leaving just £14,250 to be inherited by children and grandchildren.

Nowadays many couples choose to own their home as Tenants in Common where each partner will own 50% of the family home. This provides for many benefits. Firstly, it allows you to legally leave your share of the property in your Will to whoever you wish. A properly written Will can ensure that your half of your house will eventually pass to your children even if your widow re-marries. Unmarried cohabiting couples or relatives living together can also use this means of ownership as a way of minimising their Inheritance Tax exposure. It can also help with long-term care costs. If one of you is still living in your home the Local Authority can’t include its value in the means test if one of you has to go in to long-term care. This also applies if the husband or wife still living at home dies while the other is in care as their share will go into the trust.

Money on my mind... the Martin Lewis column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at budgeting. Here’s an uncomfortable fact for you - many people are appalling ‘budgeters’. We all know what we earn, but we don’t know what we spend, and you cannot balance the see-sawing budget without being clear on both. The biggest problem that people have is they look across the month at what they typically pay for things. So, they’ll look at their food bills, their utilities, their mortgage, car lease and all those things, and that’s all good and well. But you know what, the average family in the UK spends £600 on Christmas, which is £50 a month. They buy a new sofa every three or four

years for maybe £1,000. They buy a television that is £300. They go on holiday, and so on. The fact is, rarely are these costs factored into monthly spend, but they should be. We need to break down those big amounts into a monthly cost, across the whole year, and add that to our monthly ﬁgures. I have a tool called the ‘Budget Planner’ which is free to use on my website – have a look. Ultimately, the way I suggest people manage their money is by using a system I call ‘Piggybanking’. It involves moving things into hypothetical ‘accounts’. So, let’s say you have your ‘Standard Bills’ account, which is all the regular bills you need to pay each month; you have your ‘Holidays’ account - you know you spend £1,000 a year on a holiday and that’s about £85 a month. You have

your ‘Christmas’ account and you have your ‘Big One-offs’ account. Those are examples, but use whatever is personal to you. Each month when you get paid, you siphon the right amount of money into the Bills account, you put the right amount of money into the Holidays account, the right amount of money into the Christmas account, and so on. So your Holidays account will categorically confirm to you that you have, say, £512 to spend. If you’re spending more, you cannot afford it, so you have to cut your cloth accordingly. Many people swear by this technique, lots of people swear at it too, but it truly works! In the current climate, we can’t compensate for what’s around the corner, but being equipped to confront it will make you feel good about your finances, your life, and your prospects of overcoming that financial bump in the road.

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about taking ownership and responsibility for the villages, towns and cities in which we live. I think people sometimes look at me simply as someone focused on developing and building houses, yet I feel much more passionate about the idea of making places; I ﬁnd it is much more important to make communities and to see people ﬂourish in where they live. For years and years development has been top down - it’s been an industry where people have bought and sold land, upping its value through the planning process only to build rather crappy homes and buildings in the end. I’m much more interested in the Gandhian approach, which is from the bottom up. It’s a democratic approach whereby people and communities work together to empower themselves to take control.

That is often just down to a handful of individuals having a conversation with a landowner or a local authority or a local organisation and ﬁnding that, yes, they could do something. It’s discovering the fact they can take matters into their own hands, and there’s nothing more exciting than seeing people taking control for where they live. We’ve all got used to this idea that if the

paving stone outside our house is broken then it’s the council’s fault; or perhaps if the light doesn’t work it’s someone else’s fault; whereas actually, no, where we live is ours, and we should be taking responsibility. We should be taking ownership and we can do this through Community Land Trusts and kinds of other ownership models and initiatives; and I think it’s fundamental that we do this because that way we create

a much more sustainable, coherent civic society. We create a world we are living in that can be shared, for the good of the people who invest in it and live in it, not for the faceless developers and entrepreneurs who are using the concept of home merely as a vehicle for making money. It’s important because we are now seeing transition towns across the UK really ﬂourish. These are places that have adopted this concept and are now moving on with a practical, architectural and community vibe and approach that knits together and unites so many different and important facets of what it is to live somewhere. So next time you see something broken or tatty or perhaps just a bit shabby in your street, step forward, pick it up, take it into your workshop, or do whatever it is that’s needed to replenish it and make good.

Five Alive 5G network coverage – where we’re at, and what it means for you. Connectivity until now For a few years now, 4G coverage has enabled us to access the web, download videos and, for the most part, connect with all the things we can when out and about. Prior to this, 3G connectivity rarely meant internet connections of more than 20Mbps (megabits per second), which would imply long waits for content. At 4G, that speed is up to 100Mbps. Connectivity going forward While most of us are perfectly satisﬁed with 4G speeds, the advent of 5G is set to transform what we access and where. It utilises a new digital system for transforming bytes – data units – over air, so connectivity is 10 times as fast. This means much higher radio frequencies which transfer exponentially more data over

the air for faster speeds, reduced congestion and lower latency, which is the delay before a transfer of data begins following an instruction. What’s more, the new interface uses millimetre wave spectrum, which enables more devices to be used within the same geographic area. In the past, on 4G, this would be around 4,000 devices per square kilometre, whereas 5G will support over a million. That’s why the technology has been rolled out speciﬁcally in city locations, where more demand necessitates a greater service platform. What does it mean? The advent of 5G will make live streaming and downloading of HD video while out and about easy, with no drop-outs or buffering. People may also use a 5G WIFI router instead of paying for in-home broadband, and in business terms, it will be the catalyst for connecting humans and machines together on an

unprecedented scale. Why is the rollout so slow? The adopting of the millimetre waves, which the 5G network is built on, comes with one drawback – the higher frequency means waves don’t travel as they did over 4G. This means a smaller geographical range, hence the installation of huge quantities of nodes for maintaining the signal, and this has ultimately made the rollout slow. How connected are we? At present, the number of towns and cities with 5G connectivity is almost up to a hundred, and the majority of UK device users are expected to be able to access 5G coverage by the end of 2022. What else? You will need a 5G-enabled mobile phone in order to access the technology. Manufacturers have been producing equipped models for a couple of years now, and while early 5G handsets were expensive, the price is now coming down.

Wild Forage Soup Introduction Tommy Banks is the man behind The Black Swan, the unassuming hideaway in the North Yorkshire National Park that, in 2017, courted the attention of gastronomes the world over when it was voted the no.1 restaurant globally on TripAdvisor. That’s no mean feat for a self-taught Yorkshireman who created the business from nothing. “I have zero qualiﬁcations and no practical training – I learnt this all myself and I want to give the opportunity for others to do the same, and this recipe is possibly the easiest place to start! “My grandma used to tell me how she had to eat nettle soup during the war and how disgusting it was. But she was converted by this rich and green soup, and I made it for her regularly. Just be sure to make it on the day as it does not stay fresh for long.”

Ingredients (serves 4) • 200g wild garlic leaves • 50g nettle leaves • 50g jack-by-the-hedge • 125g butter • vegetable oil

Method 1. Wash all the wild leaves separately. Bring a pan of salted water to a rolling boil, blanch the jack-by-the-hedge for 30 seconds and refresh in iced water. Drain, squeeze out the excess water and set aside. 2. Now melt the butter with a little oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat. Add the onions, potatoes, garlic and thyme, and season with salt and black pepper. Sweat for 5–10 minutes, or until the potatoes start to break down and the mixture becomes starchy.

4. Next, transfer the mixture (it should still be very hot) to a blender jug, pack in all the wild leaves, and ﬁt the lid and the stopper. Blitz on full speed for a good 4–5 minutes until the soup is extremely smooth and a vibrant green. Correct the seasoning if necessary, and strain through a ﬁne sieve. Cool in a bowl set over ice if not eating straight away.

3. Add the chicken stock and cream, bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until the potatoes are just tender and the mixture is starting to thicken.

5. Finally, pour the warm soup into serving bowls and top with a little goat’s curd. Serve with a drizzle of wild garlic oil and a few torn young garlic shoots or ﬂowers and wild garlic leaves.

The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van Daichi is delighted to have bought an Ice-cream parlour! Seriously we did not see this on the cards. Here we are in Weymouth with a wonderful sea view, a holiday flat we rent out on the first floor, with equally magnificent views, and an American style parlour we have renovated. Fuchsia pink benchlike diner seats, American juke box, delicious waffles, sundaes, milk shakes, thick shakes, ice-cream, cornets, organic coffee, cake and deluxe hot chocolate. What more could you want from a beach front location? It has been an exciting if nerve racking experience. With no previous knowledge or skill in this area, taking on a new challenge is both exhilarating and all consuming. Fortunately, we have Emma working with us who has done this before and she has developed the mouthwatering menus and has been able to train Hayden into a connoisseur (well not quite yet…) of what makes an inviting and tasty sweet treat. Daichi of course loves the seaside. His image of swimming with dolphins and diving through white capped waves is what

Beautiful view... and amazing waffles! this is all about. There are indeed dolphins in Weymouth Bay, but we have yet to see one. There is time yet… Apart from living the beach life and all that excitement entails, what is also good is that we now understand ‘Retail’ and ‘Hospitality’ so much more. The joys of customers coming in and liking what you sell cannot be underestimated. One biker gentleman, who tells me he will definitely be back with his biker friends (and with parking right in front of us for bikes - it could not be easier), came in with his grandson. It was a total delight to serve him his Banana Splitz and a Knickerbocker Glory for the young boy. To then be told, with a huge, delighted grin, that he felt 20 again was just the icing on the cake! Or should I say the whippy ice-cream on the top? Two couples staying in a local hotel came back for more the second day and devoured our delectable apple pie waffle as well as succulent strawberry sundae. There were smiles all round. Dog friendly as we are, it is a delight to see the four-legged friends come

bouncing in with their very happy owners and be given a well-deserved doggie ice-cream as well as a dog biscuit. The Marshfield Ice-cream for dogs is actually good for them! That was a revelation for me. So, meeting and greeting puppies, mature dogs, middle aged dogs as well as two legged very young, old and middleaged holiday makers is fun to say the least! Then there are those days when it pours with rain, there are storms, sand blown in everywhere… and no-one on the beach! Yikes that is totally different. It is ‘my’ Scoops treat! the ongoing wind looking like scared people running away from a ghost. It was quite exciting really and I am smiling while writing this, so please don’t be too alarmed on my part. It is part of life’s learning - and patience is a virtue… so I have been told! The people will be back, the jumping puppies will return, the appreciative and wideeyed children will come bounding in, the sun will once again shine and the world, at least here in Weymouth and along our amazing south coast, will once again be vibrant and highspirited. We are so looking forward to a busy, and electrifying summer, as John Travolta sings to his hearts content on our wonderful juke box which I absolutely love! With Easter just around the corner, I am told it all starts with a vengeance! We await with sheer pleasure, to be able to serve you. Delores and her friends are looking for their forever home

Over recent months, we have seen a huge increase in calls for help with rehoming of rabbits and guinea pigs. We try to help everybody who needs our assistance and currently, we have over 20 fluffy little friends we are seeking new homes for. The two boys have been neutered but we do not know if Delores has been. Kitchen Capers We’re back in the kitchen with a set of gadgets that, whilst not essential to culinary completeness, will certainly make preparing food easier, and even more fun! AISAVING ELECTRIC PEELER (around £27) Mains or battery operated, start by pushing a potato onto the spiky base, then lock it in place using the central spike above.

Now, using the newly perforated hole in the egg, it’s easy to separate the egg white from the yolk.

Next, raise the peeling blade to the top of the potato and turn the machine on. The base rotates the potato, and the cutting arm gradually works its way down, removing the skin. Can be used for apples and pears and pretty much anything that requires expert peeling.

MEETOZ STEAM SHIP PAN COVER (around £9) This is great! It’s a silicon-based piece of material used to cover a pan when boiling. The three funnels on the ship design help the steam escape from the pan and prevent it from boiling over whilst keeping enough in the pan in order to cook perfectly. It’s available in different sizes, is microwave safe, and can be used to cover food and drinks.

It’s designed to make sure you miss no piece of sweetcorn – simply place the centre of the separator at the top of the corn on the cob and begin to push it through.

FANTESI EGGSHELL TOPPER/ CRACKER (around £8) This piece of kit has a cup and a spring-loaded element used to crack an egg. The cup goes on top of the egg – simply pull back the spring and let go. Remove the cup and you will see that there has been a perfect round crack in the eggshell.

In fact, so versatile is the cutter that the last time you might struggle with opening something in the kitchen is when getting this out of its packaging when it ﬁrst arrives! Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the advent of spring, and how our gardens are beginning to open back up again. There is something about spring that just feels like the world is alive and fertile and rich again. You can usually sense it on a particular day – that day when you can smell the season has arrived; when you see those first shoots breaking on an apple tree branch or a hawthorn hedge.

Where the garden is concerned, there are a few basics to look on and check you need to remind yourself of your plot in terms of sunshine and shade, and its capabilities. Remember, poor soil isn’t a barrier - you can grow all kind of things in tubs and pots and troughs. And just because what you have may be small, it doesn’t mean it’s hard to find things to grow in it. It’s easy to grow salads in a small space, or tomatoes in summer. Even dwarf fruit in large pots. No, you won’t be self-sufficient, but you know that you grew it.

It’s like all those months of dampness, coldness and struggle have just flitted away on the breeze – the world feels like a different place. And as a gardener you always have a little moment in February when you think maybe this year it won’t happen, but it always does, and I love it when the first green haze comes across the horizon. Of course, that’s the signal to formulate plans and consider the things you want your garden to represent this year, and that’s very exciting. A big part of that is anticipation, which is an underrated commodity. People want everything instantly now because they are able to go into a supermarket and have what they want, when they want it. I quite like looking forward in life, I enjoy anticipation because, of course, when it does happen, it’s that much more enjoyable.

Personally, I’m looking forward to the first sight of asparagus in April. And from this point forward, there will be something new poking its head out every few weeks – the garden is like a theatre production playing out in front of you as things gradually come into their natural season… from winter snowdrops through to daffodils, then tulips, summer strawberries into autumn raspberries. It’s all there in front of you, so make the most of your garden this year by planning for each month now.

Home décor guru Kirstie Allsopp has some fresh ideas… Kirstie Allsopp – home ﬁnder, homemaker, designer and allround loveable ‘girl next door’ – is one of the UK’s most proliﬁc advisers on all things homerelated. For years we assumed the 50-year-old Hampsteadborn presenter was an expert judging property from the outside, but her elevation to crafting queen in recent years – whilst adding in dynamic decor and fantastic furniture – adds just another layer of charm. “I think if property itself interests you then you’ve got to, even to the smallest extent, have some kind of passion about what is placed on the inside too,” she laughs, “although I’m frequently aghast at some the beautiful properties we see on Location, Location,

Location that look horrendous once you get through the front door.” Her sibling-like relationship with Phil Spencer on the hit Channel 4 property series is one of the enduring partnerships in modern factual entertainment. The pair spark off one another – they even quarrel like a married couple; her co-host occasionally disagreeing on the appeal of a suburban two-up two-down with a leaky roof. A big fan of handmade crafts and DIY decor, Kirstie’s shows have included Homemade Home and Handmade Britain. One of her particular nuggets for those people who are looking to freshen up their homes without breaking the bank and spending out on new furniture is upcycling. “The concept of upcycling has been around for yonks, but it has been given a fancy name, rebranded, and made to look cool recently. It’s all a reaction to people having to tighten the purse strings, and while the circumstances behind that aren’t anything to be pleased about, it’s great to see people revamping, repainting

and reenergising old furniture. “I’ve never liked wastage and often have a real sentimental attraction to possessions and even people sometimes,” she laughs, “so upcycling is a perfect route for reinvention that ensure we’re not just binning off old things that once were useful or cherished.” Indeed, Kirstie, who looks forward to reviving her Handmade Festival in 2022 after a Covid-interrupted two years away, admits she treads a ﬁne line between upcycling and buying new. “I think there is so much value out there that sometimes you can get a new chest of drawers or wardrobe for the equivalent price of an extensive repolish. Yet there’s nothing to stop you buying new things and still giving them your own personal touch, and a lot of that comes from ideas and inspiration. And I must say, for all its faults, the internet has been just fantastic for that, so log on and get inspired!”

After speaking with the charity, we decided that the best thing we could do for them was to support the hospice’s Better Breathing Clinic and provide a vehicle to accommodate their day-to day needs. We felt that a zero emissions vehicle would be the ideal way to help expand their invaluable service and allow them to take it out into the community where it is needed most, and in the most environmentally-friendly way possible.”

As a mobile clinic, the 100 percent electric Nissan e-NV200, with a 40kWh battery, will enable the hospice to travel up to 187 miles on a single charge throughout the local community. Rachel Khoo Chocolate Bark Introduction Making your own chocolate bark couldn’t be simpler. Great for a snack, after-dinner chocolates or the perfect edible gift, and it will keep in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Method 1. Put the chocolate into a heatproof bowl and place over a pan of ‘just simmering’ water, but don’t let the bowl touch the water. Stir occasionally until melted. 2. Line a tray with baking paper and pour the chocolate on to it, then spread with a spatula or palette knife into a rectangle about 18x22cm and around

0.5cm thick. 3. Immediately sprinkle the seeds, pistachios and cranberries evenly over the top. 4. Transfer to the fridge to set for at least one hour. Once set, break the bark up into jagged pieces.

Ingredients (serves 4) • 200g dark chocolate (70%) broken into pieces • 15g mixed seeds (e.g. sunﬂower, pumpkin and sesame) • 15g pistachio kernels • 20g dried cranberries

Top Tip The toppings you can use for this are endless. I usually see what I have left over in my cupboard – from dried apricots, ﬁgs or freeze-dried fruit (great for colour), to hazelnuts, pecans and sugar sprinkles.
