Dear Wimborne, Merley & Colehill residents, Spring is here! Haven’t the daffodils looked splendid this year? I am so looking forward to seeing even more colour in the garden this month. The birds were certainly in full song this morning when I took Hayden to school. There is nothing like our British birds. I love their sounds. Have you started clearing out the shed, recycling all those winter clothes you never wore, dusting areas of the house that have been all forgotten? It is interesting how spring has that effect on us. Time for change for the better. I rather like it. We are also lucky enough to have a couple of holidays planned this year, one in May half term and one in the summer. With three weddings as well, in April, August and September in the New Forest, Hull and Scotland, it is looking like a busy and exciting time ahead. Nellie, our wonderful travelling campervan, took us to her first football match last month. That was good! You can read all about it in this April issue. Following on from that she is keen to try new experiences, so if you would like her to come and visit, do let us know. I will see what she thinks‌ We continue to provide local information as well as good local businesses and trades people for you. We do hope they can help and would love to know if there are any trades you would also like to see, that we do not have. We have excellent reviews and with your help are very happy to help local companies expand. That is what we are here for. News from Westminster I am always keen to highlight the importance of having a working Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarm. Carbon Monoxide has no smell or taste, and can make you feel very unwell, and at high levels can be fatal. Symptoms can include feeling nauseous or dizzy, and having headaches. CO can be released from faulty boilers, gas fires, water heaters, cookers, open fires, Bar-B-Qs and wood burners.
There have been many high profile cases of people dying from CO poisoning, both in this country and abroad. Eleven years ago my brother Edward was in Lebanon learning Arabic. Tragically whilst living there he died as the result of a faulty water heater which leaked Carbon Monoxide fumes into his bedroom. I would not want any other family to suffer loss in this way, and consequently I am introducing a Private Members Bill to try and reduce incidences of CO poisoning abroad. Most laws in Parliament are made when the government introduces a Bill – the proposal of a law. When an individual MP wants to change the law, one of the ways to do this is by introducing a Private Members’ Bill. To be able to introduce a Bill in this way, MPs enter their names against a number in a “Ballot book”, and then 20 raffle tickets corresponding to the numbers are drawn out of a box. Each MP then has to present their bill, and the seven highest placed Members are likely to be guaranteed time on a Friday to have it debated, therefore getting the chance for it to be made into law. The Bill then has to pass through the same stages as a government bill – with formal first and second readings, committee & report stages, third reading and consideration by the Lords.

Talking about Wildlife...
Is your garden ready? With winter gone, many wildlife denizens in our gardens are emerging anew, and whilst the weather is warmer and resources more plentiful, our wild friends still need our help. With many species’ natural habitats in decline, gardens are vital to wildlife, and creating a wildlife haven in your backyard is one of the easiest ways of helping the environment. Even minor efforts towards wildlife friendly gardening make a big difference, with variety and year-round support being key to success. Should you not wish to make major changes to your existing garden, a corner dedicated to wildlife will suffice. A water feature, from a small bowl to a pond (with sloping edges and night-time cover to prevent hedgehogs and small pets from drowning) is a basic, however, if you have cats in the house it is best to forego a birdbath. Food and shelter are vital for all species; nest boxes for birds, hedgerows, wall climbers and piles of dead wood and leaves make ideal homes yearround. Choose a range of native flowers, trees and shrubs that provide pollen and nectar over several months to ensure that bees and butterflies, our most important pollinators, are well provided for. gorgeous but also an excellent source of pollen from May to October, rosemary offers culinary delights both in the garden and the kitchen, and foxglove, comfrey and clovers add colour and variety to the pollinators’ menu, to mention but a few. Saving rainwater for watering the garden and using natural pest control instead of chemicals instantly upgrades your environmentfriendly status. Recycling appropriate food scraps for composting makes for five-star accommodation for many insects, vital for a healthy garden. And if you do not have a garden, don’t be discouraged; a window box or a hanging basket on a balcony are also great ways of helping wildlife. Fun for under fives at Wimborne Library! A fun-filled Wednesday morning for the under fives - and their mums! was enjoyed at Wimborne Library. The “Exploring Together” session included tactile play activities and interesting toys that kept the tots happily occupied - without a screen in sight! The successful morning has gained popularity since Wimborne Library joined the scheme last year. Judith Leyman, Wimborne Library Manager explained: “It started with 3 children about a year ago and now some days we have 25 children. It is an example of a positive partnership working with Wimborne Children’s Centre. There’s a lovely happy atmosphere and children have access to library books while they are here - so they associate the library with good books from infancy.” The partnership with the library was firmed up when Activity Worker Aimie Jones from Wimborne Children’s Centre in Leigh Park was helping at the library’s Rhyme Time sessions. She said: “We looked at different ways to help through a working partnership. Judith was so supportive. The library is also a great safe place for children and parents to meet up and make new friends.” And there was high praise for Aimie from the mums: “We love Aimie. She’s kind, friendly and very patient and she is there as much for the parents and grandparents as she is for the children. She brings different crafts and toys every week to keep the children stimulated and encourage their creative abilities.” The youngest little boy - Lucca - just four months old, has already travelled around to other groups in the area with mum Rebekah. She said: “It’s really nice for him to meet people. When we first moved down I took him to the Wimborne Children’s Centre when
he was six weeks old!” When children arrive everything is set to go - tables laden with fun activity projects plus floor sensory toys for the tiniest tots. There are also sing-along sessions and story telling leaving no time to get bored! A snack break is interactive too when the children sit around a table - sharing a platter. And if it’s good weather a visit to the mini forest garden near the Minster can be arranged to explore the trees and wild plants. The weekly event “Exploring Together” is held at the library every Wednesday morning from 10am to 11.30 am. Wimborne Children’s Centre in Leigh Park is in itself run by Action for Children in partnership with Dorset County Council. Other centres for the under fives are at Corfe Mullen, Ferndown, Verwood, West Moors and Three Legged Cross.There is no charge for the morning, although donations are welcomed. An East Dorset Tailor Harold Dacombe, born in 1904 at Holt, was the eighth child of Arthur and Ellen Dacombe. He trained as a tailor at the gentleman’s outfitters Fosters of Wimborne, having left school at 13. He moved to Folkstone and then Burton upon Trent, where he met and married his wife Evelyn in 1928. They moved back to Holt where he started trading as a tailor, clothier and hosier (seller of stockings and socks). Mr Dacombe had a car in which he could travel up to 15 to 20 miles from home to take orders for garments, even made-tomeasure suits, and collect and return shoe repairs. Customers could pay for this with a small amount each week. In the days before almost every household owned a car and with limited public transport, outlying villagers would welcome these types of ‘travelling shops’. After the business stopped trading his unsold stock was kindly donated to the museum. Such everyday wear rarely survives.

Celebrity Interview:
Jasper Carrott By Tim Saunders
BAFTA award winning comic Jasper Carrott has been an insomniac for the past two years, he reveals during his sell out Evening Shared tour with Alistair McGowan, currently touring the UK. This affliction hasn’t affected his performance one bit, though. He’s still as sharp as ever and his delivery is spot on. Mundane topics such as obesity and old age are turned into sidesplitting sketches. “The audience always determines what’s funny,” he admits. “If they’re not laughing after three attempts I drop the gag. I did a sketch years ago, 10 or 12 times and then there was a magic ingredient that came up, which then gave a whole new attitude to the piece.” The current show is a format that Jasper knows well having started it with fellow comic and friend Phil Cool in the ‘90s – they did 250 shows together. “It works well because there are two different approaches to comedy. With Alistair, the fascination is that you never know who he is. So, you never know what’s coming. Between us we bring 60 years of experience to the stage.” Before sharing the performance with Alistair McGowan. Jasper did not know him. “Alistair is married to Charlie Page, a lovely lady I worked with when I was Ko-Ko in The Mikado (the comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan) in the West End. So, we had a link. Alistair and I had our first joint performance at the Henley Festival in 2014.” It was only in 2009 that Jasper came out of retirement. Prior to this he preferred to play
golf. “But my golf was getting worse. I do still play and am getting better. I had been performing in Made in Brum with my mate Bev Bevan from ELO, I’d do half an hour of stand up and he’d do the music. But this format had its limitations, particularly the name. We did about 50 shows; it was very successful. So, we decided to change the name and went with Stand Up and Rock so I’ve been doing a little of that in between working with Alistair. “That got me back into comedy and it is the small venues that I enjoy doing the most because that’s how I started. So, I got back into it and the Alistair thing fitted in with that. And I really started to enjoy comedy again – I am doing it for the sheer love of it. Also, I don’t have to do the whole evening so the responsibility is not all mine. The band was great and then I swapped that for Alistair.” These recent performances made Jasper realise that he had found an audience that wasn’t catered for; a 50 plus audience. “They didn’t like comedy with effing and blinding and with us they can bring their daughter or the daughter can bring the mum.” A career that has spanned five decades first started when Jasper became resident compére at the Boggery Folk Club in Birmingham in the mid-1970s. There he discovered his talent for comedy. A hugely popular stalwart of the British folk club scene, his comedy single Funky Moped shot to the top of the British pop charts in 1975, establishing him as a household name overnight. The flipside was his take on the legendary Magic Roundabout, a record still sought out today by a whole new generation of fans. Carrott’s Lib was winner of a BAFTA Award in 1983. The Dorset Publications Camper Van Football! Nellie had never been to a football match before and with all that testosterone and all those thighs I wasn’t sure if she would make it through the day. She isn’t getting any younger as we all know. It certainly was a new experience for Nellie. Stephen has been a keen football player himself in his youth (he isn’t getting any younger either, but let’s not mention that…) but much to his dismay, Hayden, though pretty good at football from what I hear, is not as keen and has never pursued the very popular sport. Swimming and running are his passion. Wimborne Town Football Club we were invited to! All wrapped up and raring to go, we set off on Saturday afternoon to enjoy a family day out. It absolutely is a family day out and Nellie was really taken with the burgers, (we know she is a big girl don’t we…) all locally sourced from a farm nearby, a friendly café serving good coffee and providing a great atmosphere. With today’s technology of TV, computers, internet and electronic games, it is so easy to stay at home and ‘forget’ that there is a world out there with real live people, where we can be far better entertained. Of course there was a professional football match on

Nellie all excited about her first match the TV in the well set-up bar area, with lots of cheering men, and that all added to the ‘spirit’ of the day. You cannot beat that lively atmospheric comradeship that a sport creates. (Nellie rather likes that sentence.) Wimborne Town Football Club, like many clubs is supported by dedicated local volunteers as well as trained staff. Wimborne is lucky enough to have Matty Holmes as one of their trainers. He recently was appointed the club Manager. He runs his own training school and loves to work with children of all ages to help develop their football skills. The club provides many training sessions in fact, so if you have a boy or girl who is keen to get out, run around and has ‘dispersed energy’ that would be better channelled into a sport, then give the club a call. They would love to hear from you. The club wants to work with local schools and businesses and is keen to develop strong relationships for the good of all, giving a great community benefit, whilst helping youngsters get fit and healthy. It is a win-win scene all round. We picked a wonderful sunny day for our first football experience. Nellie professes

29 to knowing nothing about the rules. She is aware that the players can be ‘offside’ near the goal but that is the limit of her extensive knowledge. You see when Nellie was at school, girls did not play football… it was a boy’s game! Girls didn’t run around kicking a ball. Heaven forbid, how outrageous. Can you ever imagine? It just shows how times have changed. Well I have to say you could hear us shouting, “Come on you Magpies!” at the top of our voices, but not nearly as loud and as enthusiastic as “The Wimborne Massive”! This is a group of boys who have a whale of a time beating the drums and chanting football songs to their hearts content. We loved it! Nellie wanted to join in and I am sure her horn would have been a great asset. Maybe there is a new career ahead for her… ok, maybe not. Seriously, these boys are a credit to the club and they deserve great recognition for creating an exciting and sporting atmosphere. You can even follow them on Twitter! The Magpies were playing against Bridgewater Town that day. It was a good first half but no goals were scored. Half time called for a cup of coffee so all refreshed the whistle blew again. The second half was more exciting from the viewpoint of goals. Wimborne scored twice! There is

Hayden & Debbie with Matty Holmes something about our competitive nature and there is nothing like winning. Nellie cheered and cheered. Jamie Davidson and Toby Holmes scored the goals, but of course it takes a whole team, working together to create a victory and all players are commended! We absolutely loved our first football experience. Sports like this and community clubs that put in much effort to help others are like gold dust. Anyone can go and watch, take in the friendly ambience, have a burger, a chat with others and really enjoy a great afternoon out. The Club also offers Corporate and private Functions, with catering done by Louise and Marc from “Millstream Bistro” so you are guaranteed a great event. Why not take a team of people with you to a match and enjoy a light meal together? A great team building exercise which everyone will enjoy, even those who know nothing about football, as Nellie can vouch for! Give the club a call and they can tell you what they offer. Travel The New Forest

“Is that you, Tim?” asks a former work colleague as my wife, baby daughter and I trek through the New Forest on a sunny autumn day. It’s a surreal situation because we’re in the middle of nowhere and not expecting to see anyone when we bump into Debbie and her husband, sub-editor and photographer respectively. The last time we saw each other was over two years ago, during my time as Business and Motoring Editor at the Bournemouth Echo. That’s what I love about holidays, the unexpected. We’re staying at Sandy Balls, the holiday resort at Fordingbridge, and are taking one of their recommended trails. I’m riding one of their bicycles and towing Harriett in a trailer. She loves it. Caroline, in the final months of pregnancy and quite fragile, opts to walk. We make slow progress over the 10-mile round trip from Fordingbridge to Fritham but the weather is good and we stop for a picnic at picturesque Hampton Ridge. Harriett has plenty of opportunity to try out her new wellies in a variety of puddles. We enjoy watching the wildlife; a surprising number of dragon flies, birds, donkeys and New Forest ponies - in fact we count 17 ponies at one point as you can see in the video at www.travelwriter.biz. After our day out in the wilds of the forest, we arrive back at Sandy Balls for a well-deserved meal in Pizza on the Piazza. After a delicious bruschetta starter Caroline tucks into minted lamb shanks while Harriett enjoys a child’s portion of beef lasagne and I have duck breast and roasted new potatoes. While Harriett is generally well behaved, it proves hard for her to sit still and soon she is out of her highchair entertaining fellow diners. Our friendly waitress distracts her with a pack of colouring pencils, which are soon used colouring in a Mickey Mouse cartoon. It’s not long before boredom sets in again though, and the pencils land on the floor. But it’s fun to post them back in the box. When
the tiramisu arrives, Harriett is only too happy to sit on daddy’s lap. And then she has to try some of the lemon tart and melon sorbet, too. No, not Daddy’s Peroni, Harriett! Fit for bed, we head back to our cosy and blissfully quiet beech lodge in time for Harriett’s bath after which she insists on pulling Bernard the Bee, her yellow trunki suitcase. Her feet, not quite touching the floor means she can’t actually ride it, yet. Still too young to sleep in a grown-up bed, her travel cot is ideal and there is room for it in the second bedroom. We’re in the comfortable master bedroom complete with flat screen television. Each night we all sleep well on the comfy beds apart from the first night when Harriett falls out of hers. Our lodge copes well with the winter weather, the combination boiler keeping it warm and cosy. The accommodation includes a well-appointed bathroom and a kitchen equipped with all the appliances you could require including a dishwasher, making for easy self-catering. Sandy Balls has its own leisure centre with indoor and outdoor swimming pools. We all enjoy a daily swim and Harriett likes the indoor soft play area, too – especially going down the slides but Daddy gets tired. It’s a very family friendly resort, offering plenty of relaxation for parents and fun and games for children all year round. The onsite cycle centre has a host of bicycles available for hire. In January, for many, the letterbox becomes an enemy. When it flips open it contains a bill. And the worst of those for many are credit cards - a final reckoning of the last year’s debts, topped off by Christmas spending. If you’ve debts you can’t repay, there are two key things to do: stop borrowing more and cut the interest rate. By cutting the rate, more of your repayments clear the actual debt rather than just help add profit to the lender. The main weapon to clear credit and store cards is a balance transfer, where you get a new credit card(s) that repays debts on existing cards for you, so you owe it, but at a far lower cost, for a small fee. The good news is right now there’s white hot competition in this market. So, sort it now and stop paying more than needed. And if you won’t listen to me, listen to Marc who emailed: “took your tip on taking a balance transfer card and we’ve saved £9,400 over the next 40 months. Amazing.” How to choose the right balance transfer card deals There are a vast range of cards to choose from, ranging up to 43 months 0%. But it isn’t quite a simple as just go for the longest. 1. Go for the lowest fee in the time you’re sure you can repay. Most cards charge a one-off fee on the amount of debt transferred. So, for example, 3% is £30 per £1,000. Generally, the longer the
0% period, the bigger the fee. So, what you need to do is calculate how long you think you’ll take to clear the debt, add a few months for safety, then pick the lowest fee within the time you need. If you’re not sure, play safe and go long. For example, the longest card available at the time of writing is the www.MBNA.co.uk up to 43 mths 0%, with a 3.29% fee. The longest no-fee card is www.Halifax. co.uk up to 26 mths 0%. 2. You need a PERSONALISED best buy table. Each lender credit scores you differently, where one accepts, others reject. Best buy tables just list the best offers available, but what really counts is what you can be accepted for. Worse still, the only way to find out what you’ll actually get is to apply, and that marks your credit file. Yet we’ve seen a new range of tools that show your likely chances of acceptance before applying, protecting your credit score. Some card firms have their own or my Eligibility Calculator (www.mse.me/BTeligibility) shows your chances for most top cards, effectively giving you a personal best buy table. 3. Many cards are ‘up to’s’: With these cards, only 51% of accepted applicants need get the advertised 0% length, the rest could get a shorter deal. So, in many cases, the cards that aren’t ‘up to’s’ can be better.@MoneySavingExpert The longest non-up

If all your accepted cards are ‘up to’ cards, then the likelihood is you won’t get the full 0%. So even if there’re one or two non ‘up to’ deals there, they may be worth looking at. The 3 Balance Transfer Golden Rules Getting the right card’s only half the job. Once you get it, you need to use it the right way. a) Repay at least the set monthly min, or you can lose the 0% deal. The same can be true if you bust your credit limit. b) Always clear the card or shift again before the 0% ends, or rates jump to the representative APRs, typically 18% to 20%. c) Don’t spend or withdraw cash on them, it’s rarely at the cheap rate. Instead, shift your debt to these cards, then put it away somewhere not to be used. A final thought on this. The best way to clear debts is to repay as much as you can and be wary of only repaying the minimum repayments. That’s dangerous. Minimum repayments are set to only just cover the interest, so repayments drop as debt drops, prolonging the debt period. For example, with £3,000 on a typical card, repaying minimum repayments it’d take you 27 years to repay, costing £4,000 in interest. Now you may say to me “I can’t afford to pay more”. Yet in the first month the minimum repayment would be about £70, and if you fixed your repayment at
that rather than letting it drop, you’d clear the debt in five years. Yet if you’ve multiple debts, order them in terms of interest rates, and throw all spare cash at repaying the one with the highest rate (as its growing fastest). Just pay minimums on the rest. Once that’s clear, focus on the next most expensive debt and so on. Are you in debt crisis? The solutions above are for those who can manage their debts. Yet if you a) can’t meet even the minimum monthly payments b) have non-mortgage debts bigger than a year’s salary or c) can’t sleep due to your debts, or have depression or anxiety because of them, then you’re in what I define as debt crisis. Forget the above and get free, one-onone debt-counselling help from www. CitizensAdvice.org, www.capuk.org, www. StepChange.org or www.NationalDebtline. co.uk. They They are there to help, not judge. On Your Plot
April showers to October fun It’s wonderful to see the first fresh, local, asparagus appear for sale this month and if you’ve a bit of space spare on your plot now’s the time to plant this gourmet crop. Buy one year old crowns and plant them immediately into well drained soil. You should be able to take a small harvest next year and they’ll carry on cropping for up to 20 years!

• Keep an eye out for late frosts and cover any vulnerable plants • Harden off indoor sowings before planting out • Start off French beans and Brussels Sprouts under cover • Fancy something a bit more exotic? Try growing some peppers and aubergines - sow this month in a greenhouse or polytunnel • Plant an asparagus bed • Earth up potatoes once the first shoots appear
Now is the time for April showers and with the weather warming up all the time and some gentle rain you’ll soon be seeing lots of changes on your veggie plot. It’s a time when any indoor space, be it greenhouse, cold frame, or just window sills, is likely to be filling rapidly with young seedlings. If you are thinking of planting some of your seedlings out then don’t forget to harden them off first. You can move the pots outside each morning, bringing them in at night to gradually acclimatise them to the change. Do remember too that late frosts can still happen in April, damaging plants that are unprotected. Watch the weather forecast and if there’s any danger of frost then use fleece or cloches to protect plants where necessary. On the subject of cloches, save any empty plastic bottles that you may have. Cut the bottom off and you are left with a wonderful mini cloche to protect seedlings that are recently planted out. Push the plastic down into the soil firmly and it will keep off not only some of the chill but also any slugs that may have their eye on tasty young leaves.
Are you a fan of Halloween? Pumpkins can be quite expensive come the end of October and then there’s always the hunt for one just the right size. Why not have a go at growing one (or several!) of your own this year? Pumpkins need a long, growing season to ripen well so now is the time to start them off. There’s lots of different varieties, including some giant ones if you want something really impressive to carve. Look out on the packets for ones that are early ripening for the best chances of success. Pumpkin seeds are huge so it’s easy to sow just one to each pot. I’d sow at least 3 plants, if they all germinate and mature it’ll probably be more than you need (they can take a lot of room as they grow) but it’s better to have spare in case you loose some early on - if they all grow well you can always pass one on to a friend or neighbour and have a competition to see who gets the biggest pumpkin! You’ll need to keep your young plant inside until all risk of frost has passed. When it comes time to plant the pumpkin out it will like lots of nutrients in the soil. Dig out a large hole and put in lots of well rotted compost - or you can even plant your pumpkin straight on top of an old compost heap. They’ll bloom with wonderfully exotic looking, huge yellow flowers and it’s wise to consider removing the growing tip once three fruit have set as this will give a better chance for larger, riper, pumpkins. Support the growing fruits on a bed of straw to avoid them dropping off or becoming mushy. Are you enjoying purple spouting broccoli at the moment? You can buy summer varieties to plant now, or try Calbrese (this has the green heads) which is best planted straight into the beds where they will grow.

Talbot Village Trust grants funding to The Etches Collection Talbot Village Trust has presented The Etches Collection with a grant of £50,000 to equip the museum with the required facilities to allow a larger number of visitors to attend the exhibition. The majority of the donation from the Trust was used to invest in the equipment needed to improve access to the main hall of the building, which can now be used as an appropriate space for local events and educational visits from schools. The remainder of the Trust’s donation was used to purchase much-needed furniture and fit accessible bathrooms in the museum, to ensure people of all abilities are able to visit the museum with ease. Steve Etches, founder of The Etches Collection, said: ‘‘The invaluable support of Talbot Village Trust has enabled The Etches Collection to offer our local community
and the visiting public a world class facility, within which our fossils can be studied and enjoyed. We can also use the new found space to host events, activities and educational visits, making the museum accessible for all.” Russell Lucas-Rowe, Trustee, added: ‘‘The Etches Collection is such a unique concept for Dorset and we felt that it was our responsibility to help turn the collection into an attraction that is suitable for everyone to enjoy. 2017 Ford Kuga By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk
The new Ford Kuga is a delight to drive. I should know, as I spent 24 hours in one motoring from Warsaw in Poland to Vilnius in Lithuania. And let me tell you, Eastern Europe’s roads are not as kind to cars as Britain’s are – and that’s saying something. Many of the roads in Poland and Lithuania are peppered with potholes, broken up by the odd stretch of motorway, but often with roadworks. The new Kuga made light work of the potholes, due to its excellent suspension and well-padded seats. The only real grumble came from the car’s petrol engine. My Kuga was fitted with the 1.5-litre Ecoboost engine, in four-wheel-drive 182PS guise. It returns 38.2mpg and 171g/km of CO2, and it’s quite noisy when you put your foot down for overtakes. That said; the melodramatics are soon over, and the car is happy to settle into a less raucous cruise when it sees the open road ahead. Inside, the Kuga’s cabin is cleaner – in the sense that there aren’t as many buttons littering the dashboard. An electronic parking brake has also joined the party. Ford’s new Sync 3 system is responsible for doing away with many of the switches. It consists of a large touchscreen and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. It also enables you to control functions using voice instructions. While it’s really a face-lift, the new Kuga does have some new stuff going on underneath the bonnet, too. There is a new 120PS 1.5litre TDCi diesel unit with front-wheel-drive, which delivers up to 64.2mpg and 115g/km of CO2. If you prefer more clout, there is a 2.0-litre TDCi engine with 150bhp, and you can choose to have it with all-wheel-drive or front-wheel drive. This variant will return up to 60.1mpg, while emitting 122g/km of CO2. If you want even further power, there’s an Intelligent All Wheel Drive version with 180PS. This does 54.3mpg on average and CO2 emissions are135g/ km. The 1.5-litre Ecoboost petrol engine stays, and comes in two states of tune – 120PS or 150PS. Finally, as mentioned earlier, the
four-wheel-drive 182PS variant of this petrol engine, driven here, returns up to 38.2mpg and emits171g/km of CO2. All-wheel-drive Kugas, like the one I drove, also include semiautonomous Perpendicular Parking tech. This helps you to park, without using your hands, in tight spaces alongside other vehicles. I found this particularly useful when trying to park up in a congested area of Warsaw – as you do. The new Kuga can be bought for £20,845 in entry-level Zetec trim, and the Titanium model is priced from £24,245. The ST-Line model is on sale from £25,845, while the more luxury oriented Kuga Vignale comes in at £30,745. The Kuga is an affordable car, if bought at the lower end of the range. It comes well equipped and has enough space for a family of four. The car is comfortable and makes mincemeat out of long trips. The six hours I spent travelling from Warsaw to Vilnius would be gruelling for any car, but the new Kuga coped well, and, more importantly I did, too. Everything in the new Kuga is simple to use, and there are lots of handy storage compartments for things such as cash for toll booths, and cup holders for bottles of water and mugs of coffee. The boot is also a good, square size, and you can load things in easily due to the low load lip. All in all, the new Ford Kuga offers good value for money. It is certainly worth buying or leasing if you need a main car that isn’t too big, yet is large enough to cope with a family of four. In fourwheel-drive guise it also turns into a useful tool for the winter months – something many parents, like me, will find invaluable on frosty school-runs using ice-rink-like rural routes.

Maxine takes the plunge for her hospital She’s been a proud supporter of the NHS all her life, but now Maxine Gribben is taking her love for her hospital to new heights by skydiving out of a plane to raise money for charity! Health Care Assistant Maxine will be taking the plunge on July 9 2017 to raise money for Bournemouth Hospital Charity and to support her patients and colleagues. While she admits the prospect of plummeting through the sky – even with a parachute – is a nerve-wracking one, Maxine says she is determined to take on the challenge to help give something back to her hospital. “I have, and always will be, a massive supporter of the NHS,” says Maxine. “This opportunity to skydive will be a once-in-a-lifetime achievement, especially as I am scared of heights! It will take me out of my comfort zone and force me to be vulnerable which will help give me a better insight into what patients may experience when staying in hospital.”

A traditional Easter, springtime treat, why not bake a batch to share with friends, neighbours and colleagues? Delicious served either warm with butter or just plain, at any time of day.
Ingredients for 12 servings 1. Dough 500g Strong Bread Flour 7g Easy bake yeast 275ml whole milk 50g Butter (unsalted, cold, diced) 1 medium beaten egg 75g Unrefined golden caster sugar 1 ½ tsp salt 2. Toppings 75g Sultanas 2 tsp Mixed Spice 100g Plain white flour 50g Mixed peel 50g Apricot Jam 2 medium egg yolks
MIX: Boil the milk in a pan, remove from heat then add the butter. Leave to cool until warm. Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl and then add the milk and beaten egg, stirring with a wooden spoon. KNEAD: On a lightly floured surface, knead the mixture for approx. 10 minutes. RISE: Lightly grease the large bowl, place the dough in the bowl then cover with a clean cloth and leave to rise until doubled in size – this could be up to two hours dependent on how warm the room is. SHAPE: Sift the mixed spice over the dough, then knead in the sultanas and mixed peel. Slice into 12 even sized pieces, roll into balls and place, well-spaced, on a lined baking tray. PROVE: Cover the dough again, and leave until doubled in size again. Preheat oven to fan 180C/200C/Gas 6. BAKE: Score a cross on top of each bun with a sharp knife. Mix the plain flour with a tbsp. of water at a time to form a paste. Use a piping bag to pipe crosses on the buns on the cuts you made. Bake the buns for around 11-15 minutes or until golden.

GLAZE: Melt the jam, sieve then brush apricot glaze over buns and leave to cool on a wire rack.

The Gruffalo comes to life at Moors Valley with new augmented reality app In the first development of its kind, Forestry Commission England and Magic Light Pictures are bringing The Gruffalo characters to life in the Moors Valley forest through a new, free, augmented reality app.
Moors Valley Country Park and Forest, near Ringwood is one of only 26 locations across England where visitors can join the Gruffalo Spotter adventure through the deep dark wood. Families can follow clues on an interactive trail and track signs of their favourite characters based on The Gruffalo, the best-selling picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The self-led trail is packed with fun facts about forest animals with fantastic activities along the way. Once families have spotted the characters, they can use the app to bring the 3D character animation to life and take photos alongside them. These photos are automatically added to the device’s gallery, where they can be shared via social media using the hashtag #GruffaloSpotters. Taking family forest walks to new heights, the app mixes technology with the real world, encouraging children to get exploring, firing their imaginations and enabling them to have an allnew forest experience at Moors Valley. The Gruffalo Spotter’s app has been developed and animated by Nexus Studios and is available for free with no in-app purchases from the App Store and Google Play.
