Talking about Wildlife...
Wildlife springs into action! When ‘proper’ spring arrives – not just the mild early winter weather that fooled some plants into blooming in December! – our local wildlife springs into action. Verges, hedgerows and woods become adorned with dainty flowers such as primroses, celandines, wood anemones and violets. A little later on the scene are the wonderful blue carpets in our ancient woodlands. Bluebells spend most of the year as bulbs underground and millions of bulbs may exist in one wood. So that they can attract the attention of pollinating insects, all of these plants flower early in the growing season, before the trees start to block out the sunlight with their fresh new leaves and before taller, more vigorous plants start to smother them. Birds are stirring too. Get up around sunrise and just open a window to hear songbirds crooning at the tops of their voices to attract a mate. Even better, make the effort to stroll through a wood at dawn to appreciate the sheer joy of the birds’ choral symphony. Of course, no spring is really complete until you have heard the calls of a chiffchaff and a cuckoo – sadly the latter is becoming much rarer these days. Frogs are also turning their thoughts to love. Enthusiastic splashing in a pool of water may signal the imminent arrival of a squidgy lump
of frogspawn. If you are lucky enough to have a pond in your own garden, or to live near a wild one, keep a watch to see when the wriggly black tadpoles emerge, usually about three weeks after the appearance of the spawn. Other good signs that spring is finally with us are the graceful flight of the yellow brimstone butterfly, the gentle buzzing of bumblebees and the competitive ‘boxing’ matches of brown hares in the fields. It’s a great time of year to be outside in the countryside because there’s so much to see and hear. Mini Cooper S Clubman By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk
The old Mini Clubman was no oil-painting, but this one could easily earn its place on the podium at Legs 11. It’s a looker alright. The brand new Mini Clubman must have been breast fed at birth, because it’s far bigger than its siblings. That doesn’t mean it’s fat – no way. This car is well formed and its proportions are just right. And because it’s not exactly a shrinking violet, the Clubman is likely to win over quirkier types who might otherwise have gone for mid-size family car choices, such as the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. The story hasn’t always been good for the Clubman, though. The first generation had a useless, single rear door that meant UK passengers were forced to step into the road. This didn’t help sales and the Clubman therefore wasn’t exactly the rock star that BMW, Mini’s owner, was expecting. But the Germans have seen the light and the previous rear-hinged ‘clubdoor’, has been kicked to the kerb in favour of two ‘normal’ back doors. They make it far easier for passengers to get in and out of the car. Then there’s the barn-door boot. You’ll remember that from the last model. Well, that stays put, but now the doors can be released manually, or if you ticked the hands-free tailgate option, a sassy little kick under the rear bumper will open them up. Inside, the comfortable seats are kind to your backside and feel supportive, especially during long periods on the road. The car’s uncluttered dashboard is dwarfed by a massive screen that sits where the speedometer on older Minis used to be. The controller on the central console manages most of the Clubman’s systems, so there are fewer buttons on the dash to confuse or divert you. As the Clubman is the largest of the current Mini litter, it has, predictably, the most capacious cabin. To be frank, with a big load area too, the word ‘mini’ seems rather outmoded. The whole motor is 270mm longer than the five-door Hatchback, allowing for oodles
of room in the front and respectable space for two adults in the rear. The boot is about the same as a VW Golf’s, so you’ll get the family shopping in – and a toddler’s buggy. The Cooper S Clubman Auto is easily the most gratifying to drive. Out at the Mini’s media launch on the roads surrounding San Sebastian in northern Spain, the most powerful petrol drove gokart-like on the straights - just as a Mini should. It’s a shame the slightly pulpy suspension can drizzle on your chips in the corners, with body roll kicking in if you enter the twisty bits too hard. But that can be forgiven, because the Cooper S generates more than enough pull to keep you cheery. 189bhp can be squeezed from the S’ 2.0 litre turbocharged fourcylinder lump, and with the eight speed auto box, a zero to 62mph sprint in 7.1 seconds is easily achievable, finishing up with a top speed of 142mph. Even though these figures might make the car sound insatiable for fuel – it’s not. With the superb automatic gearbox you can officially get an average of 48.7mpg out of the Clubman - and the CO2 emissions are 134g/km, meaning road tax is a trifling £130 per annum. The state-of-the-art 2015 Mini is a gargantuan step-up from its forerunner, and it puts right pretty much everything that was awry. The Clubman now has more doors, better space, good looks, and it really is exciting to drive. The Cooper S version is especially guaranteed to bring a grin to the face of anyone who slips behind its wheel.

The Julian Brewery The making of beer requires a number of ingredients: access to fresh water, a source of starch (e.g. malted barley), yeast and a flavouring (e.g. hops). Wimborne has been the location for a number of breweries and this month’s article looks at the history of one of those, the Julian Brewery. The Julian Brewery started in the yard of the Three Lions Inn on the corner of Victoria Road and West Street. An 1847 tithe map lists the occupier as Joseph Piddle. By 1855 George Habgood was the occupier. A new brewery had been built by 1876. Paperwork dated a year earlier describes George Habgood as a maltster (who prepared the grain for brewing), brewer, corn, hop, wine, spirit, ale and porter merchant. By 1881 George Habgood was 60 years old, living with his wife, Jane, and three grown up children, and employing six men and a boy. The business name of George Habgood & Son was in use by 1885. An undated price list includes a Light Family Ale (especially recommended!), costing one shilling per gallon, and The Wimborne Dorset Nourishing Stout, while Bass’, Worthington’s and Guinness’ ales and stouts were also available. One of the sons, another George, continued the business after his father died at the turn of the century. The brewery, along with 17 pubs, was bought by John Groves’ Hope Brewery of Weymouth in 1915. Many of the pubs were sold on to Charles Ellis & Sons of Wimborne, and other local breweries. The brewery building was eventually demolished in 1990. The brewing industry continues in the town today.

Grants of Probate
My Mother has died and she has a bungalow and some savings. I have been told that I need a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration. Please can you explain what this involves and if this is correct? When someone leaves assets over £5,000, as your Mother has, then it is necessary to obtain a document known as a Grant from the Probate Registry to enable the estate to be collected in and dealt with. If your Mother made a Will then the Grant is known as a Grant of Probate. If your Mother died intestate (ie without making a Will) then the Grant is known as Letters of Administration. Once the Grant has been issued by the Probate Registry then your Mother’s estate can be dealt with in accordance with the Will if there is one or in accordance with the statutory order of distribution if there is not a Will. The persons appointed under the Grant being the Executors or Administrators have the authority to collect in the assets, sell or transfer the property and deal with all aspects of the administration of an estate. ‘Probate’ is used to describe both the Grant of Probate and the process involved in obtaining it. It involves establishing the value of all your Mother’s financial assets and liabilities, completing HM Revenue Inheritance Tax forms to establish if the estate is subject to Inheritance Tax, preparing any documentation to claim any Inheritance Tax exemptions that can be made, to include any gifts that your Mother may have made that have to be taken into account, and paying any tax that may be due; preparing the probate documentation to submit to the Probate Registry to apply for a Grant; ensuring the accuracy of all the documentation; finalising income tax affairs and pensions; collecting in the estate from banks, building societies and selling or transferring assets including your Mother’s bungalow;
paying money due to beneficiaries; making any gifts of items to beneficiaries; preparing accounts for the estate and then the final distribution to the beneficiaries entitled. It is important to note that the Executors have a duty to ensure that the administration of the estate is dealt with correctly and will be held liable for any maladministration. It is therefore essential to ensure that all the documentation submitted to HM Revenue & Customs relating to income tax, capital gains tax, and inheritance tax has been completed correctly. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van It was Nellie’s Birthday recently. She is now officially 200,000 kilometres old! How old? She is doing really well, for an oldie. Well, can you believe it but I have never driven her… until now! She has been a part of the family for three and a half years, and I have never sat in the driver’s seat. I am not usually a nervous driver and will get in any car to drive off with no worries at all. For some reason I have not reached to take the wheel and Stephen has done all the driving. Nellie is a Japanese, ‘automatic’ girl and everything is backwards to what I know. Watching Stephen pull this lever, push that button and generally not drive anything like I drive my little Citroen (mind you has anyone seen me on the road?) had put me right off. I decided I was not to be beaten, and that I would finally sit in the driver’s seat and Nellie and I would drive off into the sunset together. So off we set for a car park... to practise. I was nervous I can tell you. I felt like I was going to an exam that I was totally unprepared for. Ever had that feeling? Hayden in the back was not much better, asking if I really wanted to do this? Some vote of confidence that was. So we arrived. Stephen got out and ceremoniously handed me the keys. I got down from my safe, highly respectable passenger’s seat and moved over.... to the driver’s seat.
Nellie is officially 200,000 km old! The first thing I needed to do was adjust the leg space as I was a foot short of the pedals. Not very helpful. I pulled the lever and lurched forward at speed, nearly shooting myself through the windscreen. Not the best start. Hayden found it highly amusing and burst out laughing. I think it was nervous hysteria. Stephen just stood there, smiling calmly while I tried to not look too embarrassed. Head held high in the air of course. So, the window wipers are on the left not the right, the lights and indicators on the right not the left, there is no handbrake, no clutch and no gears. Easy, what was I worried about? It isn’t that different... is it? Then there is the question of the brakes which have to be coordinated with the position of the parking, driving and reversing lever. Oh what was I doing? Well I managed to move forward, slowly. I even managed to turn big old Nellie around and drive onto the small road but to my dismay it was cordoned

off a little further down. Now I had to reverse into someone’s driveway. Suddenly a car appeared wanting to get into the very same driveway! It really is a wonder I am here to tell the tale at all. Carefully and calmly (well sort of) I did it! I reversed with not a damaged daffodil in sight, and we started moving forward again. I got back to the safe haven of the car park and stopped. Two horses were looking at me in a quizzical sort of way, wondering what all the fuss was about. I breathed a sigh of relief and asked Hayden if he was ok in the back. There was somewhat of a hesitation before a weak voice replied, “Er, yes...” I wasn’t convinced and I think Nellie was feeling the strain too, but I had done it. I can now drive Nellie! A real treat after all my efforts, was Nellie then taking Stephen and I to see Elkie Brooks at the Tivoli! I have loved Elkie for years and can often be heard singing in the car at the top of my voice to, “Fool if you thinks it’s over” and others. If you haven’t heard me, it is just as well actually! Well I couldn’t believe it, but similar to Nellie, Elkie had had her 71st Birthday

Debbie in the driving seat! a few days earlier. How wonderful to still be performing at that standard, 39 years after her first visit to the Tivoli. The theatre was packed, literally there was not an empty seat in sight. We all swayed, hummed and smiled through good old “Pearl’s A Singer”, “I Think I’m Going Back”, “Gasoline Alley”, “Nights in White Satin” and many more great favourites. One gentleman (and he wasn’t that young either) even managed to scramble up onto the high stage with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Unfortunately he was taken back stage and returned unable to give Elkie the flowers himself. I do hope she got them. Elkie has quite a sense of humour too and she certainly made us laugh at times! It was a brilliant evening. The Tivoli is a wonderful theatre, we are so lucky to have such great performances right here on our doorstep. Elkie had a standing ovation at the end and Nellie was thrilled to bits. She can’t wait to visit again for another show! Where will she take us next…? By Debbie Corney

• Keep an eye out for late frosts and cover any vulnerable plants • Harden off indoor sowings before planting out • Start off French beans and Brussels Sprouts under cover • Fancy something a bit more exotic? Try growing some peppers and aubergines - sow this month in a greenhouse or polytunnel • Plant an asparagus bed • Earth up potatoes once the first shoots appear
Now is the time for April showers and with the weather warming up all the time and some gentle rain you’ll soon be seeing lots of changes on your veggie plot. It’s a time when any indoor space, be it greenhouse, cold frame, or just window sills, is likely to be filling rapidly with young seedlings. If you are thinking of planting some of your seedlings out then don’t forget to harden them off first. You can move the pots outside each morning, bringing them in at night to gradually acclimatise them to the change. Do remember too that late frosts can still happen in April, damaging plants that are unprotected. Watch the weather forecast and if there’s any danger of frost then use fleece or cloches to protect plants where necessary. On the subject of cloches, save any empty plastic bottles that you may have. Cut the bottom off and you are left with a wonderful mini cloche to protect seedlings that are recently planted out. Push the plastic down into the soil firmly and it will keep off not only some of the chill but also any slugs that may have their eye on tasty young leaves.
Are you a fan of Halloween? Pumpkins can be quite expensive come the end of October and then there’s always the hunt for one just the right size. Why not have a go at growing one (or several!) of your own this year? Pumpkins need a long, growing season to ripen well so now is the time to start them off. There’s lots of different varieties, including some giant ones if you want something really impressive to carve. Look out on the packets for ones that are early ripening for the best chances of success. Pumpkin seeds are huge so it’s easy to sow just one to each pot. I’d sow at least 3 plants, if they all germinate and mature it’ll probably be more than you need (they can take a lot of room as they grow) but it’s better to have spare in case you loose some early on - if they all grow well you can always pass one on to a friend or neighbour and have a competition to see who gets the biggest pumpkin! You’ll need to keep your young plant inside until all risk of frost has passed. When it comes time to plant the pumpkin out it will like lots of nutrients in the soil. Dig out a large hole and put in lots of well rotted compost - or you can even plant your pumpkin straight on top of an old compost heap. They’ll bloom with wonderfully exotic looking, huge yellow flowers and it’s wise to consider removing the growing tip once three fruit have set as this will give a better chance for larger, riper, pumpkins. Support the growing fruits on a bed of straw to avoid them dropping off or becoming mushy. Are you enjoying purple spouting broccoli at the moment? You can buy summer varieties to plant now, or try Calbrese (this has the green heads) which is best planted straight into the beds where they will grow.

Wimborne Library – Your Library Spring appears to be upon us after a very long and wet winter, let’s hope there is some much needed bursts of sunshine on the way to cheer us ! Your library staff have been busy organising Easter holiday family activities. On Friday April 8th, in conjunction with Dorset Wildlife Trust, we are holding a free Wildlife gardening session to include lots of information and craft activities to inspire adults and children to get out into their own gardens. We have several beautifully illustrated books on both gardening and wildlife available to borrow from your library for added inspiration. For more information contact the museum on 01202 882533. News from Westminster Many local residents have contacted me about my position on the European Union referendum. This referendum has been long in the making and I am sure that like me, many of you will be weighing up the arguments and taking the necessary time to finalise your decision. I am delighted to have voted in favour of legislation that allowed for a referendum. Regardless of your final position on the 23rd June, it is worth remembering that this referendum is a result of the Prime Minister securing a majority government in May, and fulfilling a manifesto commitment. Many people said that we would not deliver a referendum. They were wrong. In the campaign, I emphasised that David Cameron was the only person who could and would deliver - and he has done so. After much deliberation and hours of careful listening, I have decided that I will be casting my vote to leave the EU. There is no doubt that we are a great nation and that we will survive whether we remain or leave. I do not accept the scaremongering on both sides to the effect that we are doomed unless we vote one way or the other. However, it is my firm view that we can thrive outside of the EU, and here are my reasons why. The key issues for me are the ones of sovereignty and control over our laws. We send our MPs to Westminster, and it should be there, not Brussels, that the buck stops. Our vision for Britain should not be constrained by those who are not accountable to the British public. If we want to change our laws, we must be able to do so and hold those lawmakers – MPs - to account at election time. However, and this is important, the whole point of a referendum is to allow members of the public – YOU - to have the final say. My vote is equal to yours, no more and no less. This is a decision that will be taken by the people and not the politicians.
We are a nation with incredible resilience and determination to succeed. We have risen to face great challenges in the past and will certainly do so again in the future. I am proud to be a member of this reforming Government. Let us get on and fight this referendum on its merits. But we must not forget that there is a huge amount of other work still to do. I now see it as my role as your Member of Parliament to facilitate discussions and get the facts. I will be holding events across the constituency for local residents to attend, ask questions and have your say. I hope this will be a useful forum for residents which will hopefully help you to make up your mind one way or the other. But most of all I want to encourage as many people as possible to vote. Please look out for these dates in the run up to the referendum and come along if you can.
