Dear Residents, Hello from all of us here at Modern Magazines! Well, we ventured out to the theatre this month and had a fantastic evening. You can read all about it inside. We are certainly not out of the woods yet, but if we stop listening to all the bad news and concentrate on what we can do and move forward together, taking ourselves off if we feel under the weather at all, then I believe we will get through quicker. For our local trades and services, they are here for you. Please use your local magazine to contact them and ask for help and advice and book them in to do all those all-important jobs in the house, the garden and to assist you wherever they can. I love to hear you are calling them and using their professional services. We link you, the resident, to good local businesses. In addition to that we help promote neighbourhood clubs and societies. Many of these are meeting up again which is exciting. We hope you are able to get out and about, meet new friends and support these local groups. If you know of a club which needs ‘shouting about’ then please let me know! The children are going back to school again and hopefully will have a less interrupted year. We wish them all a successful and enjoyable time with friends. May they learn not only from the teachers in the classroom, but from each other too. Councillor’s Column Last month, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a sobering report, warning of increasingly extreme heatwaves, droughts and flooding unless the world acts. This landmark study will undoubtedly become the focal point of the COP26 negotiations hosted by the UK in Glasgow this autumn. And whilst it’s imperative that conference commits the world’s leading carbon emitters like China and the US to take greater action, it’s also essential that the United Kingdom fulfils its net zero pledge. But if that target is going to be met, we need to act locally as well as nationally. That’s why back in September 2019, I proposed a cross-party motion to develop a Climate Emergency Action Plan to eliminate our carbon footprint in Test Valley. As well as increasing our electric vehicle fleet and harnessing new technology, we also pledged to plant thousands of trees to help remove CO2 from the atmosphere. I’m, therefore, pleased to announce that over this autumn and winter Test Valley will plant 10,000 trees right across the borough – including on land at Valley Park, Hunts Farm, Harewood, Anton Lakes, Swattons Field, Ox Drove and Picket Twenty urban park. They will consist of young trees or ‘whips’ and standard trees in a range of species, from hazel to hawthorn, blackthorn and field maple to beech, alder, oak and 6

lime. With our dedicated countryside team ensuring we create the right habitat in the right place. It’s our ambition, if we can identify appropriate land, to plant a similar number of trees in each of the next three years. Boosting biodiversity and countering climate change. This planting pledge comes hot on the heels of the work we have done throughout the summer to create more urban meadows in Test Valley, allowing grasses and plants to develop, providing valuable habitat for insects and birds. The grass in these pilot areas is due to be cut and collected this month – and we will shortly be making a decision on which areas we continue to manage as meadow and reseed with wildﬂowers. It’s our plan to continue to increase the amount of land that’s given over to nature – which is not only great for the environment but makes our parks, verges and the edges of our recreation spaces look even more attractive.

Guildhall restoration works coming to an end Andover’s Guildhall will start to return to its former glory later this week when the scaﬀolding begins to come down following stone works to the Grade II* listed building. Earlier this year, work began to restore the stone exterior of the building that sits at the top of the High Street after Test Valley Borough Council appointed Stonewest to undertake the repairs.

Now, having had a thorough clean and essential painstaking stone work completed, the scaffolding will begin to be removed while the finishing touches are carried out. The repairs and maintenance is the first work to be done to the historic building in 30 years. New bath stone has been put in place in various locations, windows have been repaired and cleaned, and careful, sensitive repairs to corners, carvings and pillars have been completed on the building, which was first built in 1825.

As well as the history of Andover’s famous building, TVBC has a legal duty to maintain the listed building. Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, Phil North, said: “It’s really fascinating to see the careful considerate work 12

The name’s Bond...but not for much longer As he bids farewell to every actor’s dream role, we look at the legacy Daniel Craig’s James Bond has left behind. To equate his Bond experiment to the process of the average gymgoer, Daniel Craig is showered, moisturised, halfway towards being dressed and grateful for the occasional glimpse in the changing room mirror… one which flashes back reflections that his 007 persona might casually approve of with a muttered, “good job”. Speculation that the actor was saying his farewell to James Bond has been circling for some years, but now, unequivocally, he is done, as the rather clumsily named No Time To Die hits cinemas. As it does, the 53-year-old emerges with a few things – a life-defining imprint on the CV, a multimillion-pound war

chest, and the knowledge that he has influenced a generation of cinemagoers in refining the definition of the modern-day hero. “I’ve always thought the image of a good actor is someone who leaves the big gestures and sweeping statements for when the cameras are rolling,” he begins. “That should really be the beginning and the end of what we expect of our actors. “I don’t want to be the type who puts himself on a pedestal away from that. What right do I have to comment at length on politics or society or the environment? And why should anyone take any notice of me anyway? I’m an actor!” Back on screen, it has been interesting to see how far removed the modern version of Bond is compared to his immediate predecessors Brosnan and Dalton. And while Connery and Moore never strayed into dadbod mode, they represented an era where Bond smoked, drank and

copulated his way through problems. At the heart of what deﬁnes Bond is, according to Daniel Craig, a good yarn, purely and simply. “Just stick to the old adage that a good story goes a long way…. and blow stuff up every few minutes,” he laughs heartily. “That’s how it’s done.” Yet what makes the man himself is something rather more complex. “If you want it too little – a great body, a great ﬁlm role, a beautiful girl – you won’t get it. The same thing will happen if you want something too much - you’ll go too far the other way, burn out, overdo it, get injured. The secret is ensuring you do enough without going overboard, and that takes a little while to work out.” The husband of actress Rachel Weisz has certainly perfected the art of keeping it all in check. “Bond has always managed to combine brute warfare with effervescent charm. I only wish I could be more like him in real life!”

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architect looks ahead to some design trends that might rise to prominence over the next few years. I get asked a lot about future design trends and initiatives, and the truth is I wouldn’t know what a trend was if it hit me in the face! Over the years I’ve come to regard trends as very lucid, irregular things – they come about quickly, are mixed and remixed, then disappear out of nowhere; and with interior design that can be problematic given the semipermanency of how we furnish our homes. It’s not like saying ‘this pair of trousers are out of fashion this year; I’ll wear a different pair tomorrow’. If you’ve added wood panelling to every wall in your home, it’s going to take a while to ﬁx. What I will say is what happens at the beginning of every century in design and

architecture is that people stop and look back at the last century and say, ‘oh my God, we didn’t get any of that, quick, let’s have some’, and you get this rush of building and design and furniture which is kind of retro – we’ve seen it over the past decade or so with a complete craze for anything vintage from 1930-90s. It’s fair to say we’re always looking forward as far as home design goes, both

architecturally and in the patterns and designs within. If I had to put money on a style or theme over the next couple of decades, it would be eco-based. We’re seeing a real retune to very natural, sustainable materials - basic stuff. Yet also, thanks to changes in technology and the way that

we design, often using iPhones, we can survey and model things really cheaply now. So that means we are going to see all manner of goods – from home products right through to personal stuff like shoes – made not in some factory in Germany, China or Portugal, but in a shop round the corner from where you live using really sophisticated 3D printing techniques. Certainly, a look into the future is a view back towards bespoking our homes in our own design. The era of the IKEA mass-market products has helped us a lot, but technology is now freeing us to style our homes in much more personal ways. It will mean we can turn back into being a nation who make things for ourselves, in a bespoke way, which I think is a very exciting future.

QUIRKY FACTS by Mica Bale Parents, grandparents and guardians we salute you! On the eve of the cosy, autumnal weather, congratulations on reaching September, having entertained the kids and creating new memories through the summer, not to mention accurately appraising school uniform sizes. After a busy summer, why not take a well earned coﬀee break, pick up the magazine and enjoy a delve into Hampshire’s history with another ﬁve quirky facts?

Did you know that it was a Hampshire bishop who was ﬁrst thought to identify the misuse of the double negative in the English language? Robert Lowth was born in the county and was renowned for many remarkable works in the English language including a translation of the Bible book of Isaiah as well as many other grammatical textbooks. In fact, prior to Lowth’s commentary on the English language and even his identiﬁcation of many of Shakespeare’s grammatical errors, the use of the double negative was common in literature and was even found in the King James Bible. So next time you’re groaning about grammar, remember to thank this Hampshire bishop!

Although it is Osborne House that Queen Victoria is most associated with, did you know that just a stone’s throw away from the queen’s favourite royal retreat is Norris Castle, the stronghold which would host the young princess, already heir to the throne, and her mother on several occasions? Evidently Queen Victoria remembered her times at the castle with fondness. She even wrote that ‘After our luncheon…we drove over to Norris Castle. We walked through all the rooms and I recognised with pleasure my old room and Mama's and my bedroom’. In fact, Queen Victoria very nearly decided upon purchasing the castle as their retreat before ﬁnally settling on Osborne.

One of Britain’s greatest violin bowmakers was William Charles Retford who was renowned for his designs and the high quality of his bows. Retford was born in Ashley in the New Forest and would later go on to publish a memoir of his upbringing in the Hampshire countryside. He wrote that ‘I was born (June 1875) in a cottage in what is now Ashley Road; situated south of the lane at the base of the hill by the brook. This spot was known as ‘Litchford’. As a tiny tot it had the elements of a fairyland to me. Fern Hill woods were west of the lane, east were a narrow meadow and Ashley Arnewood woods. In the spring these were a carpet of bluebells through which I waded; they were shoulder high to me.’

Did you know that the illegal wife of the future King George IV was once the owner of Hall Place at Bentworth? Not to be confused with the later Bentworth Hall, Hall Place has origins dating back to the early 14th century although there was known to be a manor as far back in history as the time of the 1086 Domesday Survey. The hall and manor has a long heritage of ownership however it came to be that at the turn of the century in 1800 Maria Fitzherbert inherited the house. Renowned for her illegal matrimony to the Prince Regent at the time, their union was ill-fated from the beginning as it had not been approved by the prince's father. In the years that followed, the two were separated however just before his death, he requested that he be buried with a miniature of the Hampshire heiress! The British Airship Beta was part of a new breed of aircraft developed by the Army Balloon Factory. As such, on one of its first flights, the aircraft suffered a failure of its crankshaft, forcing it to land in the Anna Valley. The Royal Engineers were quickly dispatched and it was settled in the village’s chalk pit whilst a new engine was organised. Interestingly the Beta was left overnight in the small settlement, no doubt causing quite the stir in an era when air travel was only just beginning to take off.

The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van Daichi, our Japanese Campervan, is always looking for new, British experiences, so taking us to see Dad’s Army at the Tivoli Theatre in Wimborne was an extra special treat last month. Were you an avid fan of this Iconic, now internationally renowned British show, in the late 60’s and 70’s? Back in the day this BBC sitcom reached 80 million viewers an episode and with nine series and 80 episodes in total there was a lot to laugh about. I had booked these tickets more than 18 months ago, well before any Lockdown, or hint of international adversity, so you can imagine the crowd, the audience, all seated and eagerly anticipating the

Daichi at the Tivoli Theatre in Wimborne cast’s appearance. When the tannoy announcement welcomed us all back to a “live show”, there was the best cheer I have heard for a long time. The audience was ready. Oh what excitement, oh what a buzz. We were there. We were with the characters. We were on that stage. Fortunately, metaphorically speaking, as the actors themselves were well rehearsed, and I am sure, as eagerly anticipating their performances as we were to watch them. We were all back together. I have been in plays (a few years ago now…) at school, and I take my hat off to these ambitious individuals, not professionals, but ‘ordinary local people’ with working lives and families to support, who work tremendously hard to put on a fully professional show. We salute you! “Don’t Panic!” You did a FANTASTIC job. You were all so in character and fully entertained us. Dad’s Army, as many of you will absolutely know, is situated in a fictional South England seaside town of Walmington-on-Sea, where the Home Guard platoon, manned by volunteers, is on watch. Jimmy Perry, one of the co-writers and creators of the

programme based a lot of what he wrote on his own experiences in the Local Defence Volunteers. Did you know that his mother did not like him being out late at night and worried that he would catch a cold, and as such the character of Private Pike is actually based on himself? How funny is that. The play started with “The Deadly Attachment” and the capturing of a German U Boat Captain and his crew. The unfearing, cantankerous Captain Mainwaring, a bank manager by trade, orders soggy fish and chips for them, much to the German captors’ displeasure. It is good-old British humour at its best. They don’t make ‘em like they used to. Followed by a scene from “Mum’s Army” in which Captain Mainwaring has a wandering eye and takes a fancy to Mrs Gray. It is such a shame that many of our great British lines and innuendos are disallowed and frowned on these days. In my opinion we have one of the best senses of humour on the planet and are able to laugh at ourselves in a healthy way. It is very therapeutic. After the much-loved ice-cream interval break, came “The Godiva Affair” where poor Mr Mainwaring watches his wife cavorting ‘naked’ through the streets (actually in a full cream body suit, but fortunately it was only left to the imagination…), as she poses as Lady Godiva in a fund-raising carnival parade. As my Dad would say, “You couldn’t

Great hilarity in “the office” write it, could you, Deb!” Well, Jimmy Perry and David Croft did - and oh did we all laugh! “The Floral Dance” was the final scene and as the actors gave us their departing lines, and the curtains slowly started dropping we were all smiles and clapped and cheered to our hearts delight. Eleven of us from Modern Magazines had gone to watch this fantastic ‘blast from the past’, literally from ages 17 to 80, and all of us had a fabulous evening. “Project Play” who produces these incredible shows does a great job managing and creating them. Matthew Rock, the Director and Producer, is ever grateful to all the local people who act and spend hours of their time rehearsing, the stagehands who create each scene throughout the show, the dress makers, makeup artists and the whole team which it takes to put on such a production. Andover Schools celebrate the class of 2021 Year 11 students across Andover and Stockbridge are celebrating this morning as the 2021 GCSE results are confirmed. The four main secondary schools have again joined forces to recognise the achievements of the class of 2021 and to shine the light on the qualities and attributes of students in successfully navigating another challenging year. Alongside celebrating their successes, the spotlight this year is also firmly on personal responsibility, resilience and strength of character. This year, following the cancellation of exams, grades were awarded through a process of teacher assessed grades, against a national standard and approved and awarded by the exam boards. Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs) are where teachers determine the final result based on a combination of evidence including predicted grades, mock exams, in-class tests, coursework and essays.The government is not publishing performance data for any schools or colleges this year due to the varying impact of the pandemic. Determined to ensure today was a celebration across the town and in Stockbridge and that their students were recognised for their achievements and more, the Headteachers had the following to say: Harrow Way Community School Commenting on how this year has tested students in immeasurable ways Harrow Way Community School Headteacher Michael Serridge said: “None of us could say that the past academic year has been ideal. The class of 2021 are a year group unlike any other in terms of their struggles and challenges but they have taken this year in their stride, showing

commitment, determination and working exceptionally hard. Today is one of celebration and I am incredibly proud of each and every Year 11 Harrow Way student. They too should be proud with their achievements and recognise that this year, ironically, will equipped them well for the next stage of their lives, from further and higher education to their future careers.” Harrow Way’s Catlin Pittman achieved an incredible nine grade 9s. Achieving one grade 9, six grade 8s and one grade 7, Finley is going to QMC to study History, Law and Business. Finley hopes to go on to study Law. Shakira Keene gained grade 7s and grade 6s and is studying Criminology, Sociology and Psychology. Shakira hopes to study education and child therapy at university. “I am really happy with my results, I got all the grades I needed to go on to study at Andover college”. With the skies now noticeably darker after the long summer evenings we can look forward to seeing Jupiter and Saturn, a Harvest moon, and a fox loose in an aviary! International Space Station This ISS is visible in the early hours of each morning until the 12th. From the 16th onwards sightings are at much more respectable times ranging from 7pm to 10pm. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to specify your location. Events The Autumn Equinox is on 22nd September, and marks the first of two dates (the second being the Spring Equinox) when daylight hours equal the number of night-time hours, wherever you are on Earth. The term equinox originates from the Latin meaning ‘equal night’. The Autumn equinox marks the point at which days become shorter than nights. Mercury & Mars Both planets are difficult to locate this month. Venus Venus is also very low in the west and quite hard to spot, vanishing below the horizon by 8.30pm. It is joined by the Moon on the 9th and 10th (see figure), which may help you find it. Jupiter and Saturn Both gas giant planets are visible throughout the night, and although not reaching great heights in the sky they stand out magnificently as they are currently in an area with few bright stars. Jupiter on the left is the much brighter of the two. The moon is close by between 16th – 18th.

At this time of year the southern night-sky consists of faint, watery-themed constellations such as Capricornus (the sea goat) and Aquarius (the water-bearer). Fortunately, much higher in the sky lies a lovely, bright asterism (a familiar pattern of stars) that is visible well into the winter despite its name, the Summer Triangle. The three corners are marked by the bright stars Vega, Deneb and Altair. This part of the sky is dominated by avian-themed constellations, and the triangle can be thought of as a type of aviary. Altair is in the constellation Aquila, the Eagle, whilst Deneb is in Cygnus the Swan. Both birds have mythological origins relating to the Greek God, Zeus. The third star, Vega, is in Lyra, the lyre, which is often depicted in ancient texts as being carried by a swooping bird, such as a vulture. Many of the named objects in this part of the sky derive from the Arabic words for parts of a hen, with stars named after the tail, feathers, wings and beak. To complete the setting, the central dim constellation of Vulpecula, the little fox, was originally known as ‘the fox with the goose’; in old star charts the fox was often depicted with a goose in its mouth. We therefore have in this part of the sky the rather unfortunate example of a fox loose in the hen house!

Harvest Mites!

These are a perennial problem in this area and every summer we see many itching dogs and cats (not to mention the occasional person!). This year is looking like quite a bad year thanks to the very mild winter. They are a large orange-coloured mite (just under 1mm diameter) that lives most of its life-cycle innocuously in the environment in chalk soil areas. However, one part of the life-cycle (the larva) is spent as a blood-sucking parasite and it is this stage that gives us most problems. They will attach to your pet to feed and then, if your pet is allergic to them will cause dramatic areas of crust and scab and the most amazing itchiness. The areas aﬀected are pretty classic; larger dogs will have lesions between their toes and underneath the body while cats and small dogs will usually have lesions on the head and in the ears (especially that little “pouch” of skin on the side of a cat’s ear). This is because these are the areas that mainly contact the grass where the mites are hiding.

fipronil sprays to help keep mites off until the end of the season. It is important to note that mites are much harder to kill than fleas so the various Spot-On products may give some protection but not much. To deal with them effectively we have found that we need to use the spray in the affected areas weekly! Fortunately too, some of the newer flea products may also have activity against these mites though many still rely on the mite biting in order to kill them. If in doubt ask your vet! It’s also important to note that the problem is due to the allergic response to these mites. Many pets will have them without there being any problem whatsoever! So, if your pet starts getting itchy about this time of year, it might be a late summer allergy, but it might also be harvest mites. If you’re worried contact your vet for help and advice.

Luscious Lamb Moussaka Introduction

Colder evenings call for warming comfort food such as this satisfying moussaka. Serve with a fresh green salad or even just a crusty baguette to mop up the rich sauce.

Ingredients 500g lamb mince 2 aubergines (sliced crossways) 4 large white potatoes (peeled and sliced) 1 onion (diced) 1 400g tin of chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp tomato purée

and then rinse them thoroughly before patting dry with kitchen towel. Oven bake as instructed. • Dish can be made ahead by covering your layered moussaka with cling ﬁlm and storing it in the fridge. When ready to bake, simply cook for ﬁve minutes longer in the oven.

Top Tips • If you are concerned about the aubergine being bitter – the fresher the aubergine the less chance of this there is – simply place your raw slices in a colander with a pinch or two of salt, leave for 10 minutes

Method Step One Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Lay your potato slices on one baking tray and your aubergine discs on another with a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden. Meanwhile, put the lamb, onion, garlic, oregano, and cinnamon in a large frying pan and cook over a medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring with a wooden spoon to break up the meat. Once browned, add the chopped tomatoes, beef stock and a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook over a high heat for 4-5 minutes until the ragù

Spoon over a layer of lamb ragú and top this with a layer of aubergine slices. Repeat once more before pouring over the béchamel sauce and topping with the rest of the grated cheese. Bake the moussaka for 35-40 minutes until it is golden and bubbling.

Greenfingers… The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration; and this month, as autumn works its way into our outdoor spaces, Alan Titchmarsh explains why variety is the spice of life, even in the garden! With the approach of autumn, at the moment we’re going through that phase where the colours and the shapes are changing. There’s sometimes a sadness when you realise summer is coming to an end, and the leaves certainly seem to be falling earlier this year. My advice though is to embrace the new season and really go after all the potential and possibilities that it holds. After all, we’re actually very lucky in Britain – where plants are concerned we can afford ourselves a different favourite every month; snowdrops in January, daffodils in February, tulips in March and so on. People tend to associate autumn with brown and orange tones, and a rustling underfoot; but it’s about much more than

that. One of the most exciting times is when you wake up on a certain day and you can just smell the fact the season has arrived. It’s something in the air - a kind of sourness, a tang that lingers. You can smell things just beginning to decay, but it’s in a way that is replenishing, stimulating and invigorating because it means things are turning and new possibilities are around the corner.

look at the lovely ferns it’s now growing. Next, perhaps start autumn with a tidy-up of borders, or a clean out of the greenhouse, or perhaps even renew a few tools. Also consider getting your compost boosted with all those leaves suddenly in abundance. And ﬁnally, invest in some evergreens to offer texture and volume in areas of the garden that might start looking a little sparser. Mostly though, look forward to the coming change and admire nature’s versatility. There is tremendous colour still around us, and where the leaves have descended, look at the skeletal, artistic majesty of trees.

So as autumn arrives I would offer the following bits of advice. Firstly, hold on to the last bits of colour and savour them. Next, enjoy what’s there - perhaps you have some raspberries or any number of the late-ﬂowering varieties such as Cyclamens, Begonias, and of course, Crocuses. Also see how your garden is evolving – sure, that asparagus bed is no longer cropping, but
