October already and Halloween just around the corner. Can you believe it? Well, we certainly are living in interesting times. How lucky we are to live in such a beautiful area where we can take walks and ‘get away from it all’. Away from all the uncertainty and confusion. We can create our own space, look at the wildlife, the sea, the countryside and smile despite it all. Please do keep smiling, it is infectious!

If we wear masks, regularly wash our hands and keep our distance to prevent the spreading of any disease, the virus will not survive, and we can all get to hugging each other again! As the autumn months begin to melt into the winter, our many woodlands and quintessential country landscapes are undergoing many customary seasonal changes and there surely could be nowhere better to enjoy the weather changes than in Hampshire. Here’s another five interesting facts from around the county, including an interesting look at the joys of an autumn in Hampshire.

With the weather becoming more and more as we might expect, Britons up and down the country have Hampshire to thank for the very useful invention of the umbrella. At first mocked by the fashion world of the day, the popularity of the umbrella can perhaps be attributed to Hampshire local Jonas Hanway who was said to have taken London by storm, quite literally, by his being the first male in London to carry an umbrella. Hanway who was born in Portsmouth and is best known for founding the Magdalen Hospital, would not be seen without his trusty accessory, despite facing much ridicule and raillery. Perhaps the weather was better then!

From Henry VIII to Lord Horatio Nelson, Hampshire has long played an important role in the navy.

In fact, the village of Buckler’s Hard by the Beaulieu River, was responsible for building many of Nelson’s fleet from PHOTO BY BUCKLER’S HARD MARITIME MUSEUM

trees in the New Forest. Today the Buckler’s Hard Maritime Museum offers a fine insight into the heritage of the Hampshire village and how this almost hidden gem helped to create the fleet which ultimately aided the victory at Trafalgar. Among the great ships that were built at Buckler’s Hard were the much loved, Agamemnon as well as the Euryalus and Swiftsure.

Did you know that the site of the Wykeham Arms in Winchester has been home to a pub since as early as 1755 and interestingly, there is a rumour that naval hero Lord Nelson himself once stayed at the inn? Of course many inns and pubs up and down the country laid claim to a visit from Lord Nelson however it is highly probable that the Wykeham Arms did indeed welcome the national hero, especially considering Nelson’s connection to Buckler’s Hard. Certainly the pub is steeped in history, located in Hampshire’s historic city of Winchester and is a wonderfully atmospheric place to stay, just as Nelson himself did.

Interestingly the village of Hambledon-le-Rice once played an interesting and, many could say, a vital role in the war when it was home to a special aviation school in which pilots would be trained to fly all manner of British wartime aircraft from Lancasters to Spitfires. The Hampshire village also saw several hundred aircraft built at Hambledon-le-Rice. Sadly, for a variety of reasons including local development, the site of the former flying school is no longer accessible. However Hampshire's history will forever remember the time when the county's skies became the playground of many novice war pilots.

Although the seasonal changes of autumn do tend to bring out polar reactions in different individuals, several visitors to the county who do enjoy the weather are the several migratory bird breeds that come to the UK for the winter and have been spotted in Hampshire over the years. Although there are many birds to enjoy from the comfort and warmth of the great indoors, several of the breeds which may well be making an appearance in Hampshire skies include redwings,waxwings, bewick swans and the majestic short eared owl.

ENHAM TRUST RESIDENT RAISES FUNDS FOR NEW SPORTS CLUB Enham resident Ed Villa, 45, has taken up an epic 50km cycling challenge on a Motomed static bike to raise funds for the redevelopment and equipping of Enham Trust’s proposed new sports and wellbeing hall facility for residents and the local community.

Ed, who has lived in Enham for 25 years and has cerebral palsy, is currently a quarter of the way through his September challenge and said “It’s amazing to think I’ve already smashed my initial £100 target several times over. People have been so kind contributing towards my fundraiser.

I’m not just doing this for myself, I’m doing it for everybody. It will be brilliant for people to have access to our new community sports facility. I enjoy helping others and the idea I could contribute towards something lots of people will benefit from makes me very happy.”

On the positive impact of the challenge he is undertaking Ed continued: “The thing I’ve found most difficult has been keeping up the daily practise, whilst not overdoing things. However, I have enjoyed how exercising regularly has made me feel. I’ve been able to manage my pain better as well as some other symptoms associated with my condition. Each day I’ve done this I’ve found it a little easier. I’m better able to use my stand-aid since starting the Bike Challenge, and my legs are gaining strength, making transferring in and out of my chair easier.”

Ed, who enjoys art and creating things for people he cares about continued: “I would love more people to know about Enham Trust and the brilliant work they do supporting over 6000 disabled people every year.

COUNCILLORS COLUMN Last month we unveiled masterplans for the regeneration of both Andover and Romsey town centres. This is a culmination of a lot of hard work. Not just from the council and its masterplanners but from everyone who contributed their ideas and feedback during the various public consultations. The world has changed dramatically over the past few months, but town centres were changing long before Covid cast its shadow across the world. They are becoming more of a place for leisure and living as well as retail. We, therefore, need to create places that people want to visit, work, live and spend time with their family, friends and colleagues, as well as indulge in some good old-fashioned retail therapy. Our plans do this - with a huge transformation planned for Andover and a focus on the south of the town centre in Romsey.

I want to reiterate to those people who dump their rubbish in Test Valley that we take a zero-tolerance approach to this criminal behaviour. We have had a good success rate in prosecuting fly-tippers in the recent past and will always seek to take legal action. It is not just individuals that dump their own waste which causes the problem though. There has recently been a spate of cold calling from illegitimate businesses that purport to dispose of your rubbish properly but instead dump it in the countryside. You can help us protect our beautiful borough by checking that any business that you use are a registered waste carrier, checking where the contractor is proposing to take the waste; requesting a receipt for the work carried out; or making a note of the registration number of any vehicle removing

waste from your home. Please do report any suspicions you have to the council and together we can help tackle this problem.

Last month, the council backed a crossparty motion to urge the government to change the law to make trespass with a vehicle a criminal rather than just a civil offence. This follows a spate of unauthorised traveller encampments in the Borough. The cost of clearing up afterwards can run into thousands, resulting in a heavy burden on the taxpayer when it occurs on council land and crippling farmers and other private landowners when travellers target their fields and open spaces. The objective of the motion was not to penalise those in society who behave in a lawabiding manner but to protect our residents from the antisocial and irresponsible behaviour we have experienced recently. We are doing our best to ensure the government take on board our concerns.

We are in extraordinary times and this has been a time for our local Andover businesses to adapt and change their business models where they can. Many have done just that, and this is where their entrepreneurial business skills have come in.

Although a challenging time for Andover and for all towns and cities in the UK, it is also an exciting time for Andover.

We have Test Valley Borough Council & BID working closely together with New Master Planning and Hemmingway Design on an Andover Town Master Plan. This is not an aspiration, it is fact!

Electric bikes make cycling more accessible than ever...

Town centres and high streets are rapidly changing places; having to reinvent themselves and quickly!

Although it isn’t a sudden change and has been gradually happening for years, the Coronavirus pandemic has escalated the situation and probably brought everything forward by about 5-years.

As society changes, so do our habits and this includes how we shop and spend our leisure time. A few years ago, the major challenge to our high streets was out of town shopping and you may remember, the likes of Mothercare, MFI, JJB Sports, Habitat, Comet and many others moving out of national high streets into out of town retail parks, in what then was heralded the future of society. That was then however then and although many of those centres still exist everywhere today and are still big competition to the high street, they too are suffering a drop in footfall with online being the major competition. Many of those big names that initially moved out of the high street onto industrial estates have gone completely now.

For town centres to be resilient, it is vital that they become adaptable and engage and co-operate in local partnerships. This is where BID comes into play. As a non-political organisation working with businesses for businesses, our board of voluntary directors are

drawn from local businesses who know the town. This factor combined with the natural entrepreneurial qualities of local business, means there is an opportunity to create a new culture.

A culture of working together to both manage the change but also recognising the opportunities for a different type of vibrancy on the High Street. One that would continue to provide jobs, but also support livelihood development, wellbeing and drive economic development in a sustainable and inclusive way.

Key to this are relationships, but also how resources are pooled to make things happen. In Andover, we have Test Valley Borough Council and BID working closely together in a healthy and strong partnership. It is interesting when you look at an aerial view of the town centre to see the footprint of land ownership including The Chantry Centre is under the ownership of the council, hence the exciting Master planning opportunities ahead of us.

Another BID based on the south coast said to me very recently, they would give their bottom dollar to be in the situation that Andover is in, a Master Plan in the making.

position than most other towns and cities to weather the storm if we open to change and remain adaptable.

NEW ERA FOR ANDOVER AS MASTER PLAN PUBLISHED Residents can now take a glimpse into Andover’s future as Test Valley Borough Council has today published its long-awaited town centre masterplan, marking the start of an exciting new era for the town.

The ambitious plans, due to be considered at full council on September 28, would see the total transformation of the town centre.

New routes and improvements to the lanes will see the High Street much better connected to the surrounding area and more welcoming for independent retailers.

Town centre living will also play a key role, new accommodation at upper floors will create ready-made footfall for shops and eateries, bringing life in the evenings and helping to fund the wider redevelopment plans.

One of the most radical changes would see the existing Chantry Centre site replaced with mixed use development, delivering space for more independent retailers, health, community and leisure uses, space for pop-up retailing, as well as new office space and apartments at upper levels. A new The Lights theatre would be the star attraction overlooking a bustling new square where people could relax and dine, bringing a more social feel to the picturesque Georgian market town.

A stunning riverside walk will showcase Andover’s largely hidden watercourse, the River Anton, offering the perfect setting for families and friends to picnic and wander along the water’s edge.

The plans also recommend the development of a spectacular Wellbeing Quarter, which will encompass the area around Andover Leisure Centre and include a new college campus, creating a modern space for people to exercise, relax and enjoy. This would also help to create a green corridor linking the River Anton to Vigo Park and open up stunning views to St Mary’s Church at the heart of it.

The proposals, which have been 12 months in the making, are the work of nationally renowned designers, HemingwayDesign and NEW masterplanning. They have consulted with more than 4,000 residents, businesses and other stakeholders to form an innovative new vision for the town.

If councillors approve the plans later this month, the authority will press ahead with appointing a developer partner to begin work on delivering the major changes in the town centre, with the masterplan acting as a blueprint.

Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, councillor Phil North, said: “This is a truly incredible day for the town and I am so excited to finally be able to share our plans for the future of Andover. This is the culmination of a huge amount of hard work and I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has been involved with this project, including all those who took the time to respond to the surveys and in particular the amazing teams at HemingwayDesign and NEW masterplanning for sharing my passion and vision for the town and believing in its potential.

“Town centres are changing. They are becoming more of a place for leisure and living as well as retail – and everyone’s efforts have helped create a plan to ensure Andover town centre is fit for the future.

“Of course, the hard work doesn’t end here, rather this marks the beginning of a huge project to create a new era for Andover and our next step will be to identify a developer partner, or an alternative delivery

mechanism, to bring these plans to life.

“We’re living in extraordinary times but I firmly believe that regeneration remains the key to recovery and I am absolutely committed to taking this forward as quickly as possible.”

Lora White from NEW masterplanning, added: “Andover has so much promise and we really wanted to do the town and its residents justice. It has all of the key elements: a fascinating history and striking Georgian architecture; a growing independent business community and a beautiful river, which helps to set it apart from many other town centres. We have sought to really amplify those elements and open up the High Street to make it feel more connected to the wider town centre.”

With the scale of the redevelopment, the council expects the work to be carried out in phases and will help to relocate any businesses displaced during the work to alternative town centre premises.

“Town centres are evolving and Covid-19, has accelerated this shift in focus. Andover has so many assets that allow it benefit from this evolution, including its historic streets and compact layout. The potential to make more of its waterways and green spaces can allow the town to become more rounded as a place to socialise, enjoy leisure, live, work and of course shop. Independent businesses can enjoy the societal shift that the UK is undergoing and co-exist with well know high street names, nestled alongside public services, education and community facilities, eateries, homes, offices and green spaces. A DONATION... A TOOLBOX A 53 YRS OLD APPRENTICE

It all fell into place at the same time: One of the volunteer veterans, having been with Forces Re-Engineered for over three years, decided to do an apprenticeship at the age of 53, a truly courageous decision to make. Dealing with severe physical disabilities as well as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, facing college with students two thirds of his age is a situation anybody, even without the former mentioned problems, would find anxiety filled. To meet those young students, who have truly no idea what the veterans experienced, is a very stressful situation for the veteran apprentices at Forces Re-Engineered.

Having difficulties with larger groups of people, dealing with a new environment and still go ahead, willing and wanting to learn new skills and qualifications is awe inspiring. That is precisely what these apprentices are doing when they decide to do an apprenticeship: dreading what lies ahead but determined to do it.

That is courage, commitment and steely determination.

Oh, yes, the donation, it wonderfully coincided with the start of the new apprentice. The donation from a customer, who follows Forces Re-Engineered on facebook and their website, who lives 200 miles away (no, this isn’t a printing error, it is 200 miles), was used to buy a toolbox with a set of basic tools to start with. The day the box arrived the team had one very excited and proud new apprentice, keen to use the tools.

The generosity, loyalty and support of volunteers (many of them in the background) customers and the general public never fails to astound the team of Forces Re-Engineered. They are heartfelt grateful for it.

RNLI JUST GIVING

Like many charities, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution has been forced to stop most of its fundraising activities due to covid 19 restrictions for much of the year. This at a time when through the hot periods this summer there have been record callouts for the brave volunteer lifeboat crews.

The RNLI was founded in 1824 and since then the service has saved more than 143,100 lives. With 8,941 launches in 2019, averaging 24 launches every day throughout the year, the service is busier than ever. The lifeboat service is widely recognised for its dedicated work around our coasts.

One of the major annual collections for the local Romsey branch of the RNLI is the flag day street collection which was to have been held in Romsey this year on Saturday 21st March, but which had to be cancelled.

This event usually provides a great opportunity for people to show their support. In 2019 the public generously donated £1,227 on flag day. That money has been missed this year as people have not been able give money to our collectors in the town.

As a response to this, the Romsey RNLI is delighted to announce that a JustGiving page has now been set up to allow people to donate online. Taxpayers may use Gift Aid to increase the value of their donation. The money will be used to help save lives at sea.

The Adventures of Daichi By Debbie Corney Daichi, the Dashing Dude, is our playful campervan who loves to take us out and dash us away to new and familiar places to have some family fun. Last month he did not disappoint. Many of us had holidays abroad cancelled, so what a great excuse to make the most of our wonderful English South Coast.

Daichi was delighted to dash us to Devon for a week, away from it all. I love driving along the coast to Devon, taking in some amazing views along the top around Bridport and then having a stop and something to eat on the beach at Charmouth. Fossil finding at its best. I really know I am on holiday when we stop and look out to sea here. I can relax, unwind and start to leave the stresses behind.

Bovisand Beach was where we were heading.

We had never been before but as the holiday in Tenerife was cancelled by the flight company just a month prior, I had looked on Airbnb to find this gorgeous view of the sea from the small cottage at the top of the cliff. That was the one. It is all about the view for me. On arriving at Bovisand Beach, which is a stone's throw away from Plymouth, I was not at all disappointed. It was incredible. You could see for miles. A Navy ship was anchored off the shore, there were swimmers, kayaks, stand up paddle boarders, sailing boats, motorboats and small ferries taking passengers to the idyllic looking villages of Cawsand and Kingsand opposite, across the bay. Truly delightful. In fact, when you sat down in the cottage and the tide

Watching the boats go by...

was in it felt like we were on a boat in the middle of the sea - that is all we could see! We were lucky with the weather too. The previous week had been wet and windy, but this week looked much better, and it was!

As a youngster, brought up in the North, rock pooling was a major delight. Dad and I used to pick winkles by the bucket load, literally, boil them and have them for tea. “Yum”, I say…

“Ugh”, I can hear you say! It is a personal taste.

This area had great rock pools and some caves too - when the tide was out. The first day on the beach was great. Hayden was able to get his race board out and practise his run into the sea at great speed (teenage boys…) while I lounged on the beach drinking coffee… one of my favourite occupations! Stephen put on his wetsuit and was off splashing about too. The sea rolled slowly, or not so slowly, back into the small bay and started to fill those rock pools with swishing (I love that sound) seawater and seaweed. There was rather a lot of seaweed due to the previous week's storms, but that did not put us off. What we did not anticipate was the speed with which the sea crept in… we nearly had to swim our way back to the steps!

All good fun. Us Brits do like to be dramatic at times! Back at the cottage we soaked in the sun on the decking overlooking the incredible bay below us. Where we had been sitting was now full of water. Thought provoking… but I am a bit like that. An hour later, back to the other beach, where there was still some sand to sit on. waves and the glittering sea with another coffee in hand was a great way to end our first day.

Another day on the 'other beach' was decided and this time I did spend time in the rock pools which had small shoals of speedy fish and dancing seaweed. I could not find a crab! Not one. I was quite perturbed about that, so it gave me something to worry about! I think we must like problems, as we always seem to create them for ourselves. How funny. Three wonderful days on the beach. We were fully 'unwound'.

Now Hayden is a teenager, going into the sixth form, so uniform is no longer a requirement.

Primark. He wanted to go to Primark.

Wednesday was due to have some rain, so we planned our trip to Drake Circus, the shopping Centre in Plymouth, which of course has a Primark. Daichi, who had been keeping guard all week, was happy to take us shopping.

However, I would not recommend a van in Plymouth. It is very difficult to park! The headroom in the multi storeys is not quite enough… and there is little parking for more than an hour anywhere else. Another problem – really!? Have to laugh. Finally, we managed to find a space for a maximum three hours.

Primark was fun! I could not believe it. Literally within half an hour all three of us had found what we were looking for… and more… and all at a great price. Since you cannot try anything

on at this odd time we are living in, you either like it or you don't, you buy it, or you don't.

Simple. The times I have spent trying clothes on, for hours, to come away with one item if I am lucky. This time, no choice, take it or leave it.

There may be some advantages to some of the restrictions which have at the moment! Not only that, I am now trendy Mum! Leggings, 'Converse' looking shoes (I used to call them sandshoes, but that is not cool these days…) and a gorgeous cardigan that looks hand knitted and reminds me of one my Grandma made me a long time ago! Hayden got his red shoes to match his shirt and more skinny jeans too. Stephen even bought shoes and a pair of trousers. Success – we were all smiles!

The National Marine Aquarium was another really enjoyable day. What fish, wow! We also went on the Merry-Go-Round, Mary Poppins style, by the sea wall. It just had to be done. A meal out, just passed the Plymouth Lido, which had reopened for the summer, in a restaurant with almost 360 degree views of the sea. What more could we want?

The whole week was a hit. Simple fun on our British Isle. Daichi loves to take us away, recharge those batteries and then back to reality, still smiling. It took us over ten hours to travel home as we kept stopping enroute to take in all the different places. Lyme Regis is another family favourite, so we ended our holiday there on the beach, with another meal watching the sun setting before finally driving home. Where will Daichi take us next, I wonder?

WEYHILL ELECTRONIC ORGAN SOCIETY

History and Music Weyhill was once famous throughout Britain for its annual sheep fair which drew enormous crowds and was considered to be the largest in the land. It was famed in song and story and was the source of a number of folk songs; indeed, legend once held that Weyhill's fair was the one that Johnny, of the old song, was so long at!

Furthermore, it inspired that dramatic passage in Thomas Hardy's 'The Mayor of Casterbridge', in which the drunken Henchard sells his wife and daughter to a sailor at 'Weydon Priors'.

Regrettably, the fair, which may well have had its origins in pagan times, was discontinued in 1959. Whilst it included the sale of horses, leather, cheese and hops, it was for its sheep fair that Weyhill is best known. It was certainly appropriate that music, courtesy of the Weyhill Electronic Organ Society, should reverberate once again around the site of a former fairground – and, understandably, the Club decided to forge an association with the village history when it commenced staging monthly concerts in 2002.

The annual event had provided the derivation of a folk song, titled 'Weyhill Fair' and this was adopted by the Society as its signature tune. The piece has since been re-arranged, initially as the 'Weyhill March' and subsequently as the 'Weyhill Overture'.

Another link was formed by the adoption of a sheep as an integral part of its logo and the Club has since 'acquired' a number of suitable ovine mascots that usually attend the concerts.

Sadly, the live music has been silenced by Coronavirus but, until the melodic entertainment returns, a selection of recorded music can still be heard on the Club's website, www.weyhill-eos.co.uk, and on YouTube (by entering an artiste's name in the search box).

Gardening Tips This is a beautiful time of year with the trees changing colour. Sometimes it may seem pointless raking, when the wind blows even more leaves onto the lawn, but just think of all the lovely leaf mould you can make! With crisp, blue sky days are the perfect time to tidy up, feed and prepare your garden for the winter and plan head for 2021.

Trees & Hedges - This month is the ideal time to plant hedges and move trees and shrubs. It is also the start of bare root season and these can be purchased at a fraction of the price compared to potted.

Fruit trees - Remove any diseased fruits from branches or the ground so they don’t affect next year’s growth. Wrap grease bands around the trunks of apple and pear trees to trap the Winter Moth whose caterpillars devour spring blossom.

You can also apply a winter wash to the trunks and branches of fruit trees to kill off winter pests.

Hedge trimming – This is really your last

opportunity to trim evergreen hedges before the colder weather set in, this should keep them tidy for the winter.

Lawns – Keep mowing until the first frosts and only cut as and when needed thereafter. Most importantly clear up fallen leaves to allow light to the grass. Aerate the lawn with a garden fork, spiked roller or specialist machine to avoid waterlogging over winter months. This is also a good time to recut any lawn edges or install lawn timber, brick/concrete or metal edging to make future maintenance much easier. Now is a good time to remove any thatch from the lawn surface by using a scarifying machine or stiff wire rake.

Dead patches can be easily repaired with top dressing with a thin layer of good quality topsoil and seed. With the weather being cooler this is an ideal time to lay fresh turf if required.

Roses - Prune climbing and rambling roses once they have finished flowering and tie in the stems to avoid any wind damage. Clear up fallen rose leaves to prevent diseases such as black spot and place these leaves in a green bin/bag or burn them to prevent the spread from the damaging fungi.

With some pets it will be obvious however others are more discrete, some common signs of fear include • Shaking, shivering or trembling • Barking, whining, crying or howling • Hiding behind or under things •Going to the toilet unexpectedly or in unexpected places • Restlessness salivating or panting excessively What can I do to help my pet cope on the night?

The best thing you can do is have a night at home in front of the TV with your pet. The TV will reduce the sound of the fireworks and if you are calm and relaxed your pet will be too. Close the curtains or blinds to limit the bright lights created by the fireworks.

Behave as normally as you can, do not attempt to reassure your pet and ignore any strange behaviour however irritating it may be. This may seem illogical, but by attempting to reassure your pet or correct unwanted behaviour you are reinforcing the message that all is not well, so it’s time to panic! Ensure your pet is indoors for the night and exercise dogs before it gets dark.

How can I prepare for fireworks?

There are some feel good products which can help to relax your pet; Adaptil: This is for dogs and comes in a collar, spray or diffuser. It works by mimicking the pheromone a mother releases when she is feeding her puppies.

Therefore reminding the dog of a time when it felt relaxed and protected. This would need to

be started at least a week before the event.

Feliway: This is the cat version of Adaptil and it comes as a spray or diffuser. If you watch a cat in its house it will rub its cheeks against household items. As they do this they mark the items as their home and indicates a safe and secure place by

Firework season is approaching so it is important that we know how to help our pets cope with the firework invasion. leaving a facial pheromone behind. Feliway is a copy of this pheromone therefore making the cat feel like it is in a safe secure environment. Like with Adaptil this needs to be started at least a week before the event.

What can I do if my pet is still fearful?

Ensure your pet is indoors for the night. All is not lost! There are a number of supplements and medications which can also help you pet. If you contact your vets they will be able to advise you on what would work best for you and your pet.

How can I be prepared for next year?

There is a CD available called "sounds scary" it has a number of sounds pets can become scared of one of which is a firework. It allows your pet to get used to the sounds in a controlled environment. The CD comes with a booklet which tells you how best to use it.

This kind of treatment needs to be started several months before the event in order to be effective.
