What extraordinary times we are living in. I know things may never be quite the same again but there are many positives that have come out of this. We appreciate our NHS and salute those who sacrifice themselves to help others. We know our neighbours much better.

We are polite when walking around the shops and give a nod and a smile when we are out and about. We exercise more. Cycle riding has never been so popular. We call those we love to see how they are and cheer them up if needed.

Extra funding available for rural businesses Rural businesses across Test Valley can now apply for further funding after more than £200,000 was made available in an EU grant scheme.

The Loddon and Test LEADER programme helps fund capital projects that are being undertaken by businesses and community organisations.

Now, an additional £231,000 has been made available and businesses and organisations in Test Valley are encouraged to apply. The programme offers a minimum grant of £2,500 and a maximum of £100,000. Businesses will have to provide match funding, which is usually between 20 and 60 per cent. Because the LEADER Programme is nearing an end the funding will have to be spent by the end of the year.

LEADER is an EU Rural Development Programme which operates through local action groups such as Loddon and Test. The programme covers all of rural Test Valley except for the Romsey area and Bourne Valley. To date, 20 businesses and community projects have benefitted from around £700,000 in grant funding.

Businesses can find out more about the programme, and if they are eligible for funding, via www. testvalley.gov.uk/business/rural.

Tourism and economic and development portfolio holder, councillor David Drew, said: “Businesses will need to get their skates on if they want or he access this final traunch of LEADER cash, which a good number of firms across Test Valley have already done.

“For those businesses not quite ready to access these funds, I am pushing hard for a follow-on scheme. Details will be published if, as and when something new becomes available.”

Community News

Council encourages residents to be responsible around wildlife Test Valley Borough Council is asking residents to be respectful of social distancing guidelines and mindful of wildlife when visiting nature reserves.

Local parks and green spaces across the borough have been well used by many residents during the lockdown period.

As the government issues new rules and lockdown eases, there will be more opportunities for residents to enjoy their local area.

The authority is reminding residents to keep dogs under effective control or on a lead across nature reserves, to ensure that wildlife is undisturbed. Signage has been erected highlighting nesting areas, with additional signage displaying the government’s most recent advice for safely using green spaces and how to social distancing guidance can be

followed when outside.

Portfolio holder for Community and Leisure, Councillor Ian Jeffrey, said: “As we see more restrictions lifted by central government, we are all enjoying more time in our nature reserves and green spaces. The government have issued guidance to help everyone keep safe by following social distancing whilst enjoying the outdoors. These guidelines are reflected in our signage around the borough.

“At this time of year, there are also many water birds with vulnerable young and often use our nature reserves to raise their offspring. Whilst the vast majority of residents and visitors are respectful of wildlife, we must all work together to help the animals that call the borough their home, feel safe.”

Test Valley Business Awards Postponed for 2020 Due to the current situation with Covid-19 and the Coronavirus Lockdown, the Test Valley Business Awards has been postponed until Spring 2021.

2020 was to have been the 16th year of the awards, with the Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony planned for September, celebrating business excellence throughout the Test Valley.

The Steering Group and Gold Sponsors have confirmed that all entries for this year will be carried over to next year’s event with the current sponsors also staying on-board.

A spokesperson for the Steering Group and Sponsors said, “While we are very disappointed the awards are not going

ahead this year it is more important that everyone stays safe.”

Katie Brooks from the Steering Group added: “You are still able to enter your business online now and we will be having a major push in the final weeks before the judging. We want as many local businesses to get involved and promote themselves as possible.”

The Veterans at Forces Re-Engineered Their Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Their Struggle and Determination And the Lockdown effect This month it is all about the veterans at Forces Re-Engineered. It is about the physical and mental health struggle of the men during the isolation imposed by the government.

To start with they have to deal with the increased chance of contracting the virus due to their physical disabilities. The isolation is also preventing the men from seeing friends (veterans) outside the workshop, making homelife more tension filled. However, the current contactless policy of Forces Re-Engineered and the reduced contact to the “outside world” allows the veterans’ continuous emotional healing. They keep the positive going, having each other’s phone numbers, they call each other, helping the progress of moving on. These men truly struggle, but they keep going, determination is an amazing strength of theirs.

The workshop has become their second home, their haven, the place where they have slowly started to relax. A place where it is okay to have “a bad day /days” and it’s okay to make a mistake. . They knowledge that it is “allowed” to have the former is something new for them and something to get used to. Getting used to, that there is no need of hiding the “feeling down”. The weekly therapy sessions are another important regularity for them. There is so much more the veterans have to face on their path into civilian life. The training, facing something new, the complete change of life style from the one of their past. College is another difficult challenge. Learning with students so much younger than they are and those students not having any idea what the veterans have experienced.

The Lockdown isolation made all this more difficult to deal with, there was however one real plus point (there always is. An important experience for the veterans to learn), being classed as key workers, being able to do something worthwhile for the community returned some feeling of self-worth, as is the amazing ongoing support the Forces Re-Engineered team is receiving from loyal customers and the public. I think we're all a bit guilty of this mentality in life, because it's not un l we suffer the threat of losing something that we then start to truly appreciate the value of those things and we then learn to be thankful for what we are blessed with.

A crisis (despite how harrowing it can be) can help put our problems into perspec ve and allows us to gain clarity on our lives and focus on what's really important in the short term and in the long term. My pain ngs have always been on a mission to persuade people to stop and pause, and to visually see and appreciate how much joy and beauty surrounds us in our everyday.'

Unity receives Lottery Funding for further Covid Support Unity, a Test Valley charity are overjoyed to hear that they have been awarded a grant of £10,000 by the National Lottery Community Fund to enable them to build on work from the Covid 19 Helpline to provide a service beyond the reactive support currently on offer.

This funding will enable Unity to offer more than just signposting support but to provide help to those who may need direct support as well as linking to groups, businesses and other services in the heart of the community.

Unity volunteers come from a range of ages and social backgrounds, while most of the people needing help tend to be older people living alone, this project will add to a longer-term community

cohesiveness by creating new links and relationships between individuals.

Unity Chief Executive Terry Bishop said: “The Covid crisis has created real hardship and our volunteers and the local groups are doing everything they can to ensure people have everything they need. STAR GAZING Welcome to the monthly Stargazing Page. Each month I’ll be describing astronomical events that are happening overhead in our beau ful night skies. The majority of them are viewable just by stepping out at the appropriate me and looking up, but some may require a par cular vantage point (e.g. a clear view to the west). A cloudless sky is (usually) required!

Some viewings will benefit from using binoculars or a small telescope if you have one, but most observa ons can be enjoyed without either. For your safety, please remember to wait un l the sun has set before observing the night sky.

Interna onal Space Sta on The Interna onal Space Sta on (ISS) is usually visible at some point during the night, but o�en at unsociable hours. During the summer months it is even trickier to see due to the extended daylight hours. At the me of going to press, the only ‘sociable’ overhead pass of the ISS in our skies this month is on the June 1st around 10.10pm. It will be visible moving from west to south, but observing it will require a clear, unblocked view as it will be very low in the sky. Times are subject to change, therefore please visit the free website www.heavens-above.com to obtain accurate flyover mings.

Mercury Very difficult to spot this month, but for the first few days of June, if you have a clear, low view to the west a�er sunset you may spot Mercury towards the WNW. Venus You may have no ced that the bright ‘star’ in the western evening sky has vanished. Although lost to the glare of the sun for the first half of the month, Venus reappears in mid-June as the ‘morning star’.

Mars, Saturn & Jupiter Currently these three planets are visible only in our (very early) morning skies. Over the next couple of months they will move into our evening sky, and as the nights darken they will be be er placed for observing. If you cannot wait un l then, head out between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. and look towards the south east. Mars is the bright, reddish object on the le�, whilst the two bright objects to the right are Saturn and Jupiter (brighter of the two). In the early hours of June 9th the Moon joins the two gas giants making for a pleasant view (see diagram below).

Moon This month’s full moon on June 5th is tradi onally known as the Saturn Jupiter Strawberry Moon. Named by Moon Na ve American tribes, it is associated with the me of year when strawberries ripen and are VIEW TOWARDS SE-S ON 09 JUNE 2020 3AM BST ready to pick.

In Europe and other countries, June’s full moon is known by many names, including the Rose Moon, Mead Moon and Hot Moon.

Midsummer, or the Summer Sols ce (from the La n for ‘the sun stands s ll’) occurs on June 20th this year. For the northern hemisphere, it marks the day when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky at noon. This means we experience the ‘longest day’ of the year (the longest period of daylight in one day). The early summer months are the best me to try and spot a rare and beau ful cloud-type: noc lucent clouds. If condi ons are favourable, these blue-white illuminated clouds are visible thirty minutes a�er sunset for a couple of hours, typically in our northern skies.

Although the exact cause of their forma on is unknown, we know they are composed of ny water ice crystals and form about 80km up in the atmosphere.

Although June itself isn’t well-known for any named meteor showers, in 2014 the UN officially designated June 30th to be Asteroid Day. This day was chosen as it marks the anniversary of the Tunguska Event that took place in Siberia in 1908. It starts from only £40,000 which may sound like a lot, but when you compare it to the other models in their por�olio, you can really tell Tesla have made a conscious effort to develop something more affordable for the masses, whilst keeping quality high. With incredible lease deals available, owning a Tesla is now a realis�c prospect for many people, and why wouldn’t you? The Model 3 Standard Range Plus boasts a range of 235 miles, coupled with incredible performance, superb technology and a very engaging drive. The car effortlessly corners, even with all power to the rear wheels it s�cks to the road like an AWD and the “ondemand” accelera�on is like hi�ng a light switch, it really is incredible. Who would have thought in 2020 we would have a very capable self-driving car, granted it’s more suited to motorways but the car really is capable of keeping you and your family safe.
