Dear Lyndhurst! Well it has been all go in our house with Hayden settled into his new middle school. We are back to swimming lessons, brass band practice and homework! All good fun and often a challenge, fitting everything in. Hayden is a pretty keen swimmer, swimming for the Swim Bournemouth Club which does mean some early mornings – starting at 5.45am on a Friday and 7am on a Saturday…. That is early for me! I do take my hat off to those parents who have really sacrificed a lot to help their children become great sports people. It takes quite some dedication by the whole family. I don’t think Hayden will make the Olympics, but it is a great sport and one Stephen and I are happy to support him in. It gets him away from the computer for a while, which can also be a challenge… We have had a good month putting the magazine together for you. There are some new advertisers for you to see. Do take a look and see who may be able to help you, and of course tell them that you got their details from The Lyndhurst Directory. This is our 24th edition and I still love to hear that the local trades and businesses are getting calls and bookings from us! Lyndhurst Royal British Legion The Lyndhurst branch of the Royal British Legion folded in 2000 due to lack of interest. The Lyndhurst Parish Council took over the Remembrance Day in the Village and handed the Parade over to the Girl Guides and Boy Scouts. Without their sole presence there would have been no parade in Lyndhurst and so we are very grateful to them. But in spite of their best efforts, interest dwindled. In the year 2012, a resident of Lyndhurst asked if he be allowed to try and improve the situation, particularly as a lot of Lyndhurst Soldiers fell during past conflicts. For the 2012 Remembrance Day for the 1st time a Military presence was obtained, 2 bands and a young schoolboy played the Last Post and Reveille on the Trumpet, both in Church and at the Cenotaph. Also several local business and organisations took part in the laying of wreaths. The Guides and Scouts took pride of place at the head of the parade. As a result of this success Mr. Adrian Wiltshire (The Resident) was asked if he would like to try and reform the Lyndhurst Royal British Legion. With the help of Dee Faulkner-White, Lisa Quinn and Sarah Davis a reformed branch is now in existence with some 35 members and membership increasing on a monthly basis. We meet once a month on the 3 rd Wednesday of the month at the Lyndhurst Workmans Club and all are welcome. We are planning a dinner dance on the 18th October. We are led to believe that while new branches sometimes start up, it is
extremely rare for a folded branch to reform and it has caused quite a stir and some excitement in the County.

Spooky trails and eerie bat walks at the New Forest Wildlife Park Get ready for shocks and shrieks during half term at New Forest Wildlife Park this autumn. The park will be doing a Spooks Trail Halloween Quiz every day of October half term as well as a Twilight Bat Walk (date TBC). There will also be an Owl Day from 11.00am to 3.00pm on the Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday of half term week, with encounters with Hobbit the baby Barn Owl. Hampshire autumn half term 2013 runs from Monday 28 October to Friday 1 November. Visitors are advised to check the NFWP website for further details and exact timings closer to the events. Autumn is also the time for the deer rut, when Morris the red deer stag starts to become territorial and to challenge other males – even the nearby European bison and his male keepers! The deer rut usually takes place for around three months, between October and January, depending on what part of the country the deer are located in. During the rut, or breeding season, red deer stags in the wild return to the hinds’ home ranges and compete for breeding access, squaring up to other males in elaborate displays of dominance, including roaring and fighting. Whoever wins the fight becomes the dominant stag and has exclusive access to the female hinds. In October the autumn colours in the park look beautiful and make for wonderful photographs. New Forest Wildlife Park is in natural woodland setting and children and families can also enjoy the fabulous Go Wild! adventure playgrounds (one for toddlers
and one for older children and adults) set among the trees and animals. Among the amazing wildlife on show at New Forest Wildlife Park you can see the mighty European bison – three young brothers who originally came from Poland – as well as free-roaming roe, sika and fallow deer. Don’t miss the cheeky and squeaky Asian shortclawed otters as well as a whole host of other animals, including lynx, Scottish wildcats, wolves, wallabies, foxes, wild boar, giant otters, North American river otters, polecats, pine martens, ferrets and several species of owls. New Forest Wildlife Park is run by Carol and Roger Heap, who have been involved in wildlife conservation for over 30 years. The park also rescues injured and abandoned wildlife in association with the RSPCA and is involved in international captive breeding programmes for endangered species. Refusing to be duped by a beaming smile and a friendly demeanour, Jane tapped her pencil on the candidate’s application and reduced his seven to a six point five. Attention to detail was paramount, or as husband Brian had ranted last night, she was a nitpicker. Nitpicking had been the least of Brian’s insults when he accused her of scuppering their move from the family home into a plush apartment. There was a quiet knock at the door and her secretary appeared. ‘Your daughter phoned.’ ‘My daughter?’ Jane gasped, her eyes widening, and noting Mrs. Green’s raised brow, she assumed a bland expression. Madeleine never phoned, emailed or communicated in any way. Parents and daughter were estranged. Obstinacy, pride and disappointment were not a cocktail for reconciliation; something was wrong, very wrong. Smiling sweetly, Mrs. Green tilted her head. ‘I asked her to phone back at 12.30.’ Jane glanced at the wall clock; exactly two hours before she would hear Madeleine’s voice for the first time in five years. She blinked, her mind conjuring a montage of disasters: homelessness, car crashes, drugs; her priorities shifted and collided like tectonic plates beneath the ocean. Madeleine was all that mattered. Sighing deeply, she braced herself for another interview and barely listened to the candidate’s well-rehearsed spiel. The word ‘Honesty’ hit her like a sledge hammer. It was she who’d failed as a parent; never rewarding kindness and never encouraging her daughter to dream. Insisting on academic success, she’d wanted Madeleine’s personality contained, while Brian had demanded value from private education. Madeleine had shamed them, abandoning her GCSEs and resurfacing months later on a Somerset fruit farm. The telephone rang and Jane’s hand trembled as she reached for the receiver. ‘Mum is that you?’ ‘Yes, it’s me,’ Jane replied softly. ‘Can I come home?’ ‘You know you’re always welcome.’ Her throat constricted, the words sounding ridiculously formal; this was her daughter for heaven’s sake, her flesh and blood, the most precious person in the world. ‘Where are you?’

13 ‘I’m in Afghanistan. I’m in the army. And I’m pregnant.’ Jane’s thoughts raced; she imagined Madeleine caked in camouflage paint, holding a squealing baby. She tamped down a bubble of hysteria, managing a serious ‘I see.’ And gathering her thoughts, asked, ‘What about the father?’ There was a long shuddering breath. ‘I’m so sorry, I’ve let you down again.’ ‘The baby’s father,’ Jane prompted. ‘He’s a local fighter.’ A faint eerie crackle filled the silence and she half expected dramatic music and gun shots. ‘He was married.’ Madeleine’s voice caught on a series of heart wrenching sobs. ‘I’m a medic and he was the interpreter working with me.’ Jane swallowed and moved the receiver to her other hand. ‘I don’t know what to do.’ Madeleine sniffled. ‘I’m being sent back and Dad’ll be more ashamed than ever.’ ‘Never mind Dad, how far on are you?’ ‘Five and half months.’ Jane pictured Madeleine’s lithe figure thickening beneath a bulky combat uniform; she could almost taste her daughter’s fear and understood a mother’s desperate need to protect her child. ‘It’s going to be alright,’ she offered gently, knowing that she would do everything she could to make it so. Their large detached house was ripe for conversion, an annex for Madeleine and her child was the least they could do after five years of pretending their daughter did not exist Wiping away tears, she pleaded, ‘Please come home, for the sake of the baby.’ A murmured ‘Thank you’ ended the call, and Jane leaned back in her office chair, glad she’d found fault with Brian’s apartments. None had a soul, none had a garden and none could accommodate a grandchild. She saw herself pushing a pram, becoming a grandmother and learning to love again. Local Country Park bucks national trend Water voles are thriving at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest thanks to the dedication of a team of Countryside Management Rangers. Their success is particularly rewarding as it comes at a time when conservationists nationally are reporting a further 20% decline in an already threatened population. The Park commenced an extensive water vole reintroduction programme in 2011, which was followed in 2012 by a further release. In all over 300 water voles found a new home in East Dorset and sightings throughout 2013 indicate that the reintroduction was a huge success with water voles now seen regularly along the extensive Crane and Moors river system. “Moors Valley was the first country park in the south to take this initiative and we believe our hard work has really paid off for our water vole families,” said Matt Reeks, Senior Countryside Ranger. “The project has also united the local landowners who we brought together and encouraged to provide suitable habitats and continue to monitor a wide surrounding area for mink activity to ensure our voles are not be eaten by this aggressive, non-native predator”. Good habitat management is crucial to the success of a programme of this nature. The river system in the Park is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Natural England, which inspects SSSIs, has put it in its top-rating category. Its careful management is a testament to the work of the Ranger team that not only ensures the success of the Park’s wildlife but also plays host to over 800,000 visitors each year at
what is now the third most visited county park in England. “We have had many sightings of water voles near their release area over the last two years, and recent indications show they are now populating the river system adjacent to Moors Valley,” said Matt. “We are interested in finding out how far they have moved along the river system. I’d ask anyone visiting Moors Valley or strolling by the Moors River to keep their eyes open – and listen out for the distinctive ‘plop’ of the vole when it enters the water – and report any sightings to the Visitor Centre. We log all confirmed sightings and they will help us to ensure the future of the water vole in East Dorset. Tastes so good... ROAST SEA BASS WITH A LEMON & GARLIC CRUST
Perfect for a simple lunch or a dinner party with friends, this main course is an easy crowd pleaser, looks great on the plate and is a wonderful dish to serve with vegetables or salad alike.
Equipment: Small processor or mortar and pestle Ingredients :
Oven: Gas Mark 5, 190°c
4 skinned fillets sea bass, washed under running water 3 unwaxed lemons 4 cloves garlic Small bunch of washed fresh parsley 25g butter 30g wholemeal bread 50ml extra virgin olive oil Salt & pepper
Method: Brush undersides with olive oil and season fish all over with salt and pepper. Zest one of the lemons and squeeze juice. Wedge the other lemon for garnish. Whizz garlic with lemon juice and zest. Once no more large pieces can be seen, add the parsley, bread and butter to the processor.

Quite quickly you should produce a moist and very tasty breadcrumb mixture. Press this mixture firmly onto the upper side of the fillets. Roast for approximately 20 minutes, or until the crust is brown. Serve with whatever takes your fancy!

If you are lucky enough to have a pond, large or small, at this time of year check all the pond plants and remove all dead and dying growth.
If you have a pump to run a fountain or waterfall, now is the time to clean and service it and store it until Spring. Feed the fish before Winter hibernation.
Cover the pond with netting to stop leaves from falling into the water and sinking to the bottom. Too much rotting vegetation in the water will create methane gas to the detriment of fish and other wildlife as well as a disgusting, smelly layer of sludge in the bottom that you will have to deal with, sooner or later!
If we have a severe winter, be ready to cover the pond completely during really freezing weather, or at least try to ensure fish can get oxygen by keeping a small area ice-free by using a ball or floating bowl. If the pond is covered with a sheet of ice, pour boiling water into the bowl until it can be lifted out.
In early Autumn, if you have clumps of marginal and bog plants, they can be divided and cut back the leaves of waterside plants.
Having said all that, I've actually seen goldfish frozen in solid ice for weeks, only to start swimming around perfectly happily when they thawed out - so what do I know?!

THIS MOTOR is more budget than bling; but that in itself is no problem. The new hatchback from ŠKODA has space for five-up and, in 1.6 TDI guise, can extract up to 64.2mpg out of a tank. Also, with emissions of just 114g/km, the car is cost-effective to run as a company vehicle. When it comes to thrills and spills the ŠKODA Rapid isn’t really quite as speedy as its name suggests. The oil-burner under the bonnet of the Czech-made motor powers it from rest to 62mph in 10.6 seconds and upwards to 118mph. It’s fairly slow going, and with only five gears it’s annoyingly easy to crunch the gearstick up into a non-existent sixth cog. As well as the less than prompt performance the Rapid feels skittish at motorway speeds and the steering is too light to inspire confidence. The plastic trim is disappointing compared with, say, the more executivefocused ŠKODA Superb but, in its favour the flagship ‘Elegance’ grade, on test here, does come stacked with kit. Key features include cruise control; electrically heated door mirrors, multi-function steering wheel controls, Bluetooth and air conditioning. It’s easy to get comfortable behind the wheel
too; the height adjustable seating and adaptable reach/rake steering column makes this possible. If you opt for the Elegance model you’ll also benefit from 16-inch alloys, cornering front fog lamps, rear electric windows, and chrome interior detailing. But no matter which variant of the Rapid you drive, you’ll find access to the boot easy and the load space square and practical in this, the seventh car in ŠKODA’s award-winning range. Crucially, With Benefit in Kind (BIK) ratings from only 14 percent, the ŠKODA Rapid is expected to provide a shot in the arm to the brand’s rapidly growing fleet sales. On-theroad pricing starts from £12,900 for the Rapid 1.2-litre 75PS in entry level S trim, rising to £17,850 for the Rapid 1.6 TDI CR 105PS in flagship Elegance spec.
