Hello Lyndhurst, I hope you all had a great Bank Holiday weekend for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee! My sister and I were remembering the Silver Jubilee and have a photo to prove how much we enjoyed it with our home made Jubilee hats at the street party. All good fun! There were certainly lots of picnics in the park, parties and other celebrations planned last weekend so I do hope you had a good time. We have lots of interesting articles this month... There is an interview with the famous and well-loved Alan Titchmarsh, Calshot Lifeboat Station has an Open Day coming up. Pat, a good friend of mine who is in a wheelchair, has written an article called Out and About in Hampshire... and there’s more. OUT AND ABOUT in Hampshire by Pat Dimmock Now is just the time of year to get out and about and see some of the attractions that Hampshire has to hold. It is also the blooming season for Rhododendrons, Azaleas and assorted other exotic flowers at Exbury Gardens. Gardens I went there a couple of years ago with a friend and the show of the above mentioned is unbelievable; I never knew there were so many colours and the combination of so many grouped together is fantastic for it’s scent too. In addition to the gardens, which cover several acres, there is the Steam Railway, the River Walk and the Japanese Bridge and the house (not open to the Public). One of my personal favourites was the flower beds near the main house that included sculptures as well as some of the largest Peonies I’ve seen. After an afternoon enjoying a ramble round there is Mr Eddie’s Restaurant and the Tennis Court Tea rooms, with both outside and inside seating. Mr. Eddy’s offers a selection of hot and cold food. If you arrive first thing you can enjoy bacon baguettes, in the afternoon a traditional cream tea is available in addition to other light snacks. The lunch menu features soup, baked potatoes, hot fish, meat and vegetarian dishes, plus a salad and a children’s choice. In addition on Sundays there is a roast and if you are planning a family outing what better way to combine a good day out with the traditional Sunday roast. Exbury Gardens is accessible to those with disabilities, with most areas of the garden being easy going if you are in a wheelchair. A map is given to you when you buy a ticket with areas not suitable for wheelchairs plainly marked. So why not take the opportunity to visit a lovely location that is on your own doorstep while the weather is nice. Here’s Summer? Let’s hope so.

Going green Passionate Yorkshireman Alan Titchmarsh looks back over 23 years getting down and dirty in the garden. Let’s be honest, it’s a rather inexplicable phenomenon - Alan Titchmarsh becoming a sex symbol and housewife favourite. Is the greenfingered personality really up there with the George Clooney and David Beckham? Or is it all just a rather long drawn out joke? Alan certainly thinks it might be... “I honestly think someone’s been having a laugh for all these years at my expense,” he begins. “And then I get journalists and people asking about it and I feel if I ever once took it seriously, I’d get even more laughs. I know what I look like and I’m certainly no Hollywood idol - I think it’s time we put that one to bed once and for all because no one’s buying it, especially me!” Titchmarsh, who has just turned 63, will celebrate the tenth series of his selftitled ITV chat show later this year, and he’s already compiled a wish list of celebrity guests for the big event. “Maggie Smith would be amazing but she never does interviews as far as I’m aware. She would be the ultimate for me, so fingers crossed. Though as much as I’d love to sit down with her, I’d imagine it might be a terrible interview! “And Julie Walters - I’ve had her on before but she’s one of my favourites. I

It’s such a huge event, on a worldwide scale, and while I’m thrilled to even be involved, I find myself a little jumpy at the notion. It’s such a massive event watched by billions across the globe… and that’s a thought I could actually do without too! I just hope I don’t get tongue tied.” Will he get a chance to meet the lady herself on the day? “I’m not sure, to be honest. I might get a royal wave if I’m lucky.” As for BBC’s Gardeners’ World Live, visitors will experience theatre and stage shows, as well as getting the chance to meet their favourite TV stars, including Monty Don, Carol Klein, Joe Swift and of course, Titchmarsh himself, who explains why the four-day event is w onder f ul oppor tuni ty to mee t gardener’s from around the country. With so much time out of Yorkshire, Titchmarsh will be happy to return for some well-earned time in his Ravensworth home. “I must say, as a proud Yorkshireman, there’s nothing quite like coming home after working away. We all know how special the county is, but sometimes you have to leave and come back to really feel it again. I’ve been very lucky in my career in the sense that I can

experience London and all that holds, whilst also knowing that venturing back to home roots is there for me. “I’ve never really had a career plan,” he admits. “I’m more an opportunist. When opportunities come along, it’s about recognising them, and that's something I’ve always done. Saying ‘yes, I’ll take a shot at that’, regardless of the risk of flak. “The Ground Force show took a lot of stick initially for popularising gardening, but I stand by it. It used good techniques and allowed people who were somewhat intimidated by the process to realise it’s not out of their reach. “As for what the future holds... well, right now, I’d just like to continue working, presenting my show, writing more books and spending more time in my garden.” And does he get much time to venture amongst the flora and fauna, what with dreaming of Maggie Smith and waving at the Queen? “Every chance I get, I’m in there. I make sure each evening to at least take a jaunt around my garden, do a little dead-heading. What to do in your Garden in June As any gardener knows this time of year can be fantastic in the garden if all goes as planned. That includes of course the weather co-operating with hot barmy days and nice cool nights filled with the aroma of night scented flowers, if you had the forethought to plant them. So, for starters here are some things that you can do in the garden this month: Keep pots and baskets well watered. As plants are growing vigorously and the June sun can be strong, watering twice a day could be necessary in some cases. But please observe any water restrictions in your area. If they are in force you can install a water butt and/or save the water from your kettle (cooled) and the washing of veggies, in a bucket and supplement your watering. It’s surprising how much water one can collect in this way. In addition new plants should be watered in well at planting time, and during any dry spells. When planting, create a shallow dip around the plant base to hold water, and give a good soaking every couple of days, not a cupful twice a day. The point here is to encourage roots to extend deep down into the soil to find moisture and become well established. Little and often watering methods encourage roots to come close to the soil surface where they are more likely to dry out. Mulch around plants in beds and borders and large containers, to retain moisture. A nice thick layer of leaf mould is the best, but grass clippings or composted wood chippings are good alternatives. A layer of newspaper, covered over with grass mowings will help to suppress weeds and retain valuable moisture during long hot spells.

If you have climbing plants in your garden you will understand the beauty and height they bring to the garden. Plants, such as Clematis, Virginia Creeper and Honeysuckle, to mention just a few, are that they twist themselves around anything they come into contact with and support themselves. However, sometimes their stems can fall astray and they need some help. Simply tuck them in to the rest of the plant or tie it wherever you want to grow. Take care not to use wire or anything that could dig into branches or stems if they do need some added help. Dead-heading roses starts now and continues right through to the end of autumn. Cut off each spent flower head as and when you spot them. On floribunda varieties, wait until all of the flowers on the stem have died and cut them off at the base (where it meets the branch). For an organic slug and snail control try saving your egg shells and then crushing them up and putting them around the base of the plant you wish to protect. The theory is that snails and slugs don't like crawling over this and will go elsewhere for lunch or dinner.

The New Forest Volunteer Centre, run by Community First New Forest, promotes and supports volunteering. The Volunteer Centre recruits potential volunteers from all sections of the community and seeks to place them with voluntary organisations which are looking for volunteers to assist them with their work. Lyndhurst and District Community Responders A Community Responder is a member of the public who is a volunteer and is trained by South Central Ambulance Service to respond to certain types of medical emergencies in their own community, pending the arrival of the ambulance. e.g. heart attacks, strokes, falls. You may already have seen us around the village? We have currently five trained volunteers from the local community and have answered over 1000 emergency calls since we were established in late 2003, throughout the villages of Lyndhurst, Minstead, Bank and Emery Down. If you would like more information and you could spare a few hours a week or month, and would like to train as a Community Responder for your village, please contact: Lyndhurst and District Community Responder Coordinator: Graham Reeve on 02380 282866 No previous experience required!

The New Forest Meddlars is a mixed Morris dance side, formed in 1990 and based in Lyndhurst in the New Forest. We dance mainly in the Cotswold and Border traditions, but vary our performances with new dances, some collected at festival workshops and some we devise ourselves. During the coming winter months, we shall be meeting at the Scout Hut in Romsey Road, Copythorne on Tuesday evenings to practise and to learn new dances. Morris dancing is a great social activity so why not join us. New dancers and musicians are always welcome.

New Forest Organ Society Our concerts are monthly (usually 4th Tuesday in the month) and we have professional musicians who come from all over England to give concerts who all bring their own modern electronic organs and play a variety of music, big band, Latin, light classical etc. The Society has been giving concerts for 33 years and our audience is 180-200 each month so very popular. Explore Moors Valley – for free! Anyone who has ever wondered what goes on in the depths of Moors Valley Country Park and Forest near Ringwood can find out on Wednesday 20 June when local people are invited to visit, see what’s new and try out some of the Park’s many attractions free-of-charge. From 4-7pm visitors will be able to park their cars for free and sample some of the great activities and facilities that Moors Valley has to offer. Go Ape will be offering complimentary Segway taster sessions for anyone interested in trying out the latest mode of electric transport. For just £1 you will be able to explore the tracks and paths on one of the Park’s hire bikes. The Moors Valley Railway will be offering free train rides, and golfers can get in a bit of free practice on the pitch and putt golf course or even try out the award-winning full course for only £10. And all this can be topped-off with a relaxing snack or meal in Seasons restaurant set in the historic 18th century barn that also houses the Visitor Centre and exhibition space.
