New Forest National Park Authority welcomes the new recognition for England’s forests The New Forest National Park Authority has welcomed the announcement from the Government today (31 January) that publicly-owned forests in England will be kept in trust for the nation. Environment Secretary Owen Paterson said a new public body will be created that will hold in trust the nation’s forests for future generations. The Government Forestry and Woodlands Statement launched today says Government wants ‘strong and resilient delivery arrangements that achieve better quality outcomes for the economy, people and nature.’ It says a new separate Public Forest Estate management body will be given ‘greater freedom to achieve a sustainable financial position and manage its resources to best effect within a clear long-term remit to maintain and enhance the land, trees and other assets under its care.’ The Statement says: ‘This will include recognising both the integrity of the overall Estate and the unique historical, environmental and cultural characteristics of the living, working landscapes in its individual forests and woodlands, such as the New Forest and the Forest of Dean.’ New Forest National Park Authority Chairman Julian Johnson said: ‘The New Forest National Park Authority welcomes the recognition from Government that National Parks are special places; the New Forest in particular has its own unique cultur e which n eeds nur turin g and protecting. ‘The Government has also recognised the significant economic value that forestry and woodland brings, and the potential to do more. We are already looking at the

potential of wood fuel in the Forest and working closely with tourism businesses (the New Forest alone generated £211m in tourism income in 2011/12) and we look forward to working further with private landowners and businesses to keep the Forest a living and working community.’ The report also says the new ways of working should deliver 12% woodland cover by 2060. Mr Johnson said: ‘There is a commitment from Government to publish an Open Habitats Strategy this year which will enhance our unique mix of habitats in the New Forest and ensure that the right trees are in the right place. ‘There is also a commitment to focus on continuing to involve and liaise with local people and to harness the real passion that p eo p l e h a v e fo r th eir f o r es ts a n d woodlands. We will be working with partners to maintain public access to the New Forest which is so important to people’s health and well-being.’ The Government’s announcement was in response to a report by the Independent P a n el o n Fo r e s t r y . T h e P a n el wa s established on 17 March 2011 to advise government on the direction of forestry and woodland policy in England and on the role of the Forestry Commission in implementing policy. Mr Johnson said the National Park Authority was delighted to have been involved in the whole process of the review, including a visit by the Panel to the New Forest. He said: ‘We feel today’s Statement reflects the real benefits to people of the Public Forest Estate and has been informed by the valuable experience of people on the ground.’

Local photographers show the way as national exhibition opens at Moors Valley County Park The British Wildlife Photography Awards (BWPA) exhibition opens at Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood on 2nd February – with three of the twelve category winning shots taken by local photographers. And for the first time, the overall winner and holder of the title British Wildlife Photographer 2012, is also a local photographer, Dr Matt Doggett. Thousands of entries were received for this prestigious annual award that not only celebra tes Br itish wildlife bu t also recognises the huge talent of wildlife photographers throughout the country. The exhibition brings together 90 of their images, including winning and commended entries, to provide a visual treat of truly inspirational photographs. Matt Doggett’s image, ‘Gannet Jacuzzi’ won the Coast and Marine category before going on to take the overall title. Captured on a remote location off the north coast of Scotland, the image shows both the raw power and the grace of gannets as they dive, highlighting their amazing underwater abilities. The Southampton-based photographer describes his experience of being underwater with the gannets as “amazing”. “Looking up I could see dozens of them soaring overhead,” said Matt. “And then I watched as their blurry white forms plummeted downward, breaking the surface at great speed before they twisted, turned and swam to get the fish first. “I'm looking forward to seeing all the winning and commended images at Moors Valley - there are some great shots that really shouldn't be missed”. Underwater photography also won the Habitat category for Southampton’s Alex Mustard with his shot of a grey seal in an underwater cave.

Back on dry land, the Wild Woods category was taken by west Dorset’s Jeremy Walker. Featuring a stunning array of autumn colours, his photograph of the New Forest captures the spirit of the woods as they move towards winter. All three photographs form part of the BWPA’s touring exhibition that can be seen at Moors Valley until 17th March. “We are delighted to again be hosting this incredible exhibition”, said Moors Valley’s Countryside Interpretation Ranger, Katie Davies. “With over 10,000 entries from all over the country the British Wildlife Photography Awards really seem to capture everyone’s imagination and when you see the quality of the images it is easy to understand why. “We are so lucky to live in this glorious part of the country. Once our visitors have seen this fabulous exhibition we hope they will be inspired to get out and look at the wildlife that surrounds us, and possibly even take a photo or two of their own to remember it by”. It is free to view the British Wildlife Photography Awards exhibition that opens daily in the Visitor Centre at Moors Valley Country Park until 17th March. Parking charges do apply.

Lyndhurst and District Community Responders A Community Responder is a member of the public who is a volunteer and is trained by South Central Ambulance Service to respond to certain types of medical emergencies in their own community, pending the arrival of the ambulance. e.g. heart attacks, strokes, falls. You may already have seen us around the village? We have currently five trained volunteers from the local community and have answered over 1000 emergency calls since we were established in late 2003, throughout the villages of Lyndhurst, Minstead, Bank and Emery Down. The New Forest Meddlars is a mixed Morris dance side, formed in 1990 and based in Lyndhurst in the New Forest. We dance mainly in the Cotswold and Border traditions, but vary our performances with new dances, some collected at festival workshops and some we devise ourselves. During the coming winter months, we shall be meeting at the Scout Hut in Romsey Road, Copythorne on Tuesday evenings to practise and to learn new dances. Morris dancing is a great social activity so why not join us. New dancers and musicians are always welcome.
