What an amazing summer we have had! I had a call from a very caring resident asking me to remind us all to leave water out for the birds as they desperately need it. Good idea, let’s help them. The children are now off school for a few weeks so hopefully they are getting out and about and enjoying time with family and friends. Nellie would say that! Get out there and live life, she would exclaim. On that note the story this month is a tribute to her. We have had 5 fabulous years and unfortunate events have led to what you will read about. We do hope you have enjoyed her exploits each month. We look forward to welcoming Daichi, the Dashing Dude! It is also the 70th Anniversary of the NHS. Currently I have a friend in Poole hospital and I have to say from the ambulance service men and women to the nurses and the doctors they are all incredible. Very special people work to help others and I, on behalf of Hampshire Publications, thank them for their true dedication and care. Your little magazine is also full of hard working and helpful trades and service people. They are here for you and they would love to hear your call or see you in person. Happy Birthday Testwood Lakes! Imagine a post industrial site, about 15cm of deep mud with no paths and just one rough track for access. There were some very small trees and a bit of grass starting to grow amongst piles of gravel. It’s hard to imagine this was Testwood Lakes just 15 years ago, not long after gravel extraction ceased. Now the landscape around the lakes is surrounded by lush green trees and meadows and you walk over boardwalks and paths to explore ponds and bird hides. Over the last 15 years volunteers and staff of the Hampshire IOW Wildlife Trust have developed and looked after this wonderful Southern Water owned nature reserve, which now supports over 100 species of birds and around 20 species of dragonflies and butterflies. Today the Education Centre welcomes around 100 Hampshire school groups a year; around 4000 children. Over 3000 people a year attend our public events such as Wildlife Watch, Forest School, birthday parties and school holiday activities. Many children attend for an evening visit with their Brownie or Cub group to take part in activities such as pond dipping, den building and bat walks.
Part of the secret of the success of Testwood Lakes is that there is so much local support for the place. Grace Brennan, Education Officer explains: “We have a small team of staff but a huge team of dedicated volunteers who help us with everything from clearing brambles and putting up fences to helping with a pond dipping session, as well as serving teas on a Sunday and even filling in spreadsheets! “We also have tremendous support from local uniformed groups such as Brownie groups who visit us several times a year, as well as schools that have been coming to us every year for 10 years or more, and families whose children we have seen grow up!” On Sunday 30th September Hampshire IOW Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers will be hosting a free fun day at Testwood Lakes from 11am3pm to celebrate their 15th birthday and partnership with Southern Water.

What happens if you don’t have a Power of Attorney? Arranging a Power of Attorney before it’s too late is critical to avoiding heartache for friends and family later. None of us likes to think about a time in life when we’re no longer able to make our own decisions. It is a good idea to not only arrange the LPAs but also to complete an advanced directive or “living will” at the same time so that your chosen Attorney’s are fully aware of all your wishes well in advance of the powers being needed to be used. With our life expectancy increasing year on year the need for LPAs in the future will significantly increase, so don’t get caught out at your time of need.

Ballard School Launches Diverse Range of 2018 Summer Camps Returning for 2018, Ballard School’s popular Summer Camps programme will cover a four-week period from Monday 23rd July to Friday 31st August. They will provide a unique experience, with an engaging array of sporting, crafts and performing arts activities. An excellent opportunity for children from all walks of life to spend their summer at Ballard School; they are open to all local and visiting children across different age groups. The Summer Camps will feature a variety of sports including Football, Netball, Hockey, Gymnastics, Volleyball, Fencing and Multi-Sports. As well as participating in team activities there is the chance for children to take part in Sailing and learn Cycling safety skills through Bikeability courses. A fun way to spend the holiday period, children can also take part in clubs, workshops and crafts from Junk Modelling to Jewellery Making, KNEX, Design & Make, Mindfulness, History, Nature Quest, Animation and Robotics. Furthermore, there will be opportunities for youngsters to show off their flare for performing arts with Dance, Music and Drama camps.
Alastair Reid, Headmaster of Ballard School has said: “Hugely successful, we’re delighted to be hosting another jampacked series of camps this Summer. Young people from far and wide can look forward to a wide range of energising and engaging activities to suit every child’s personality. Lymington Seafood Festival Returns Bigger & Better Saturday 11th August 11-8pm & Sunday 12th August 11-6pm This year’s Lymington Seafood Festival is gearing up for a weekend of gastronomic delights with over 90 local artisan producers, live music and some of the region’s top chefs in the demonstration kitchen. With its stunning Solent backdrop, Bath Road Park hosts the free two-day festival which takes place on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th August and this year is raising money for Sail 4 Cancer. An estimated 15,000 people attended last August and with an even greater array of seafood stalls set to attend, combined with live music, local gin’s, award winning English sparkling wine Exton Park Vineyard and celebrating their 40th anniversary is Ringwood Brewery who will also be the main event sponsor. Plus, the festival will host many of the region’s leading chefs in the demonstration kitchen. Led by The Jetty’s Chef Patron Alex
Aitken, who will be joined by over fourteen talented chefs including Matt Tomkinson from the Montagu Arms and Chewton Glen’s Luke Matthews. Wines: A Good Choice - Rosé Rosé wines are very popular for drinking in the summer months. Now, with several styles being available, made utilising a wide variety of grapes, they can be enjoyed throughout the full year. Popularity speaks for itself, as many countries, worldwide, now produce these wines, which incorporate some of their colour from the grape skins. Adding colour to a dining table and al fresco, for example, as well as making fabulous apéritifs, these wines are a great choice. Indeed, sophistication comes to mind, when the pink wines are around.
La Vieille Ferme Rosé (France) is a very popular (dry) wine. I find this has pleasant, light-red fruits for the bouquet and most pleasing mouthfeel, which continues on, to the palate sensation. Pairs well with grilled meats, salads and a lot of cuisine. Coeur de Cardeline (France) is a further, often-selected, production. This Côtes de Provence pale-pink pleaser exudes a bouquet of summer fruits, which enticingly leads to the mouth’s pleasures. The excellent flavours continue to the palate, for a most satisfying finish. Grilled meats, fish, pasta and salads, match very well with this wine. Arniston Bay Rosé (South Africa) is a Fairtrade production which graces many dining tables. The name is a reference to the blue skies, wonderful beaches and the fishing village. Again, the bouquet pleases, very well and the mouthfeel follows, with red berry flavours, plus a positive, memorable finish. Great to accompany numerous dishes of cuisine. These are just a selection. Each to their own and we all have our preferences – whether red, white, sparkling or other. Take pleasure in finding your favourites. I located these wines at Co-op stores. Having been a customer of the Co-op for many years, I have noticed an increase in the variety of household goods and foods, as time progresses. With the choices of wines, spirits, beers and other beverages available, the Co-op, I consider, is most worthwhile visiting. Looking a lot like a giant daisy, an aster springs forth with a starry shaped head providing colour in late summer and autumn when many of the other blooms may have already faded away. These plants can grow up to 8ft in height depending on the variety chosen so they’re a great choice for many gardens given their flexibility. The Adventures of Nellie The Hampshire Publications Camper Van Many of us have come to enjoy Nellie’s exploits over the years, 5 good years in fact. Playful in her mature fun-loving way, always ready to go somewhere new and have a go. She would laugh at herself with her long black skirts to cover up her rather large thighs and a silver grin that would bring a smile to everyone’s face. Family fun, excursions, exploring and seeing the bright side of life have been her passion. I did say the journey was interesting at the end of last month, so are you ready? Driving back from Wales… Well, we had literally just passed the “Welcome to England” sign, travelling at a mere 20 miles an hour when there was a sudden bang. We lurched forward. I yelled. We were hit again. The young girl in the car behind Nellie failed to stop, she just kept going. I yelled for a second time. Nellie was badly hit and I knew instantly she would not be repaired. The girl’s car was totally ruined, the engine would not start at all. After the police came to help, Nellie limped to the nearest service station and unfortunately on the back of a truck Nellie was taken to the “old van’s home”. It was very sad. If I say anymore we will all cry, and that is not ‘our Nellie’. No, Nellie is not one to give up easily and she has a Grandson in Japan who is coming over to replace her fun and frolics here on the South Coast. Nellie will be keeping a close eye on him of course because from what I hear ‘Daichi, The Dashing Dude’ as he is known (and for good reason), is a bit of a handful. Despite his Japanese upbringing, he has somewhat of an ‘Italian’ persona and likes the lady cars. Being the personality he is, he is having a ‘makeover’ (can you believe
Nellie with the Cerne Abbas Giant it?) before he arrives here in Dorset. Goodness knows how we will cope, but I am sure we will manage somehow. It was Nellie’s idea and you know what these stubborn older ladies can be like! When we tried to argue we just saw ‘the look’ from those headlights and we decided it was best to let her be right. We are all for an easy life. Daichi, which means ‘first grandson’ in Japanese, is taking his time (there is a lot of makeover going on) and will be with us in a couple of months. In the meantime we will take a look back at Nellie’s Golden Years… It all started in 2013. Stephen’s old car had finally given up and I had this idea to get a campervan to help Stephen not only carry all of out thousands of magazines each month, but also give us some family fun with a good excuse to get out and about. Having a young, very active boy of nine at the time, and being a somewhat ‘older Mum’, having the van meant we could all enjoy a day out. After all, Nellie’s whistling kettle satisfied my more relaxed way of life and the outdoor life let Hayden run around to his heart’s content. Stephen had the

27 best of both worlds. It got both of them off the computer too! As soon as we bought Nellie, she attracted attention. Five years ago there were less van’s like her on our English roads and the dark glass, with her roof up, her long black skirts and her silver smile seemed to draw people in. They were curious. That’s what gave me the idea to characterise her and write about where she took us. It was all a bit of fun and would hopefully make others smile. Her very first trip in June ’13 was to Cerne Abbas to see the naked Giant on the hill. Knowing Nellie now, some may see why that might be, she was always a bit cheeky! One of our favourite trips was to the Isle of Wight. Mum, Dad my sister, her husband and the three of us all went in convoy. Nellie was so excited she got on the earlier ferry and left my sister and brother-in law in ‘Lady J’ standing, waving, on the quay! We all met up again and had a fabulous week exploring the whole island. Fishing for the boys and Liz Earle’s Beauty Salon for us girls. We came out smelling better than the boys did, Nellie will tell you! Another great stay was had at Norden Farm near Corfe Castle. Fields, the wonderful sounds of our English birds, fishing again, fish and chips in Swanage, a picnic by the River at Wareham, what more can you want? Nellie took us to Cornwall last summer where Hayden competed in

Nellie ‘unpacked’ ready for the beach the Surf Life Saving Championships (I did say he was active didn’ t I?) where we got thoroughly rained on and had to buy a new awning. Camping at it’s best…? Following that was a wedding in Hull, so Nellie was packed with wellies, wetsuits and surf boards, next to wedding outfits, dainty shoes and a fascinator! All good fun and just shows how versatile Nellie really was. Ever ready, with a big silvery grin, for any occasion. If you had a favourite story please let us know. Phone, write or email. The Bell Inn in the New Forest Awarded Second AA Rosette The Bell Inn - New Forest is delighted to announce they have been awarded two AA rosettes for their culinary excellence, joining a prestigious roster of restaurants as one of the best places to eat in the New Forest. The decision comes following a recent inspection from the AA. Their longestablished scheme recognises successful cooking at different levels across the UK. Rosettes are awarded based on one or more visits by an AA inspector to a hotel or restaurant consistently achieving high standards, where greater precision, attention to detail and the selection of quality ingredients is apparent in the cooking. Only 40% of restaurants within the AA restaurant guide will have two rosettes and, The Bell Inn is one of only seven restaurants in the New Forest area to have been awarded two rosettes. Head Chef, Mark Young, working at the Inn since July 2017, has formed a great bond with the kitchen team encouraging creativity and consistency in delivering their exciting, seasonally changing menus. Speaking of their recognition, Head Chef, Mark Young, said “The team and I are absolutely thrilled to receive such prestigious recognition. The whole kitchen brigade has worked really hard and I’m hugely proud not only for the award, but also for those who dine with us and leave happy and contented, having had a great evening.
Also commenting on the award, owner, Robert Crosthwaite Eyre said “This is a terrific achievement for the team and one of which I’m extremely proud. A significant amount of hard work goes into achieving this and their hard work and diligence has paid off. It’s a welldeserved accolade, demonstrating what a foodie destination we’ve become”. MINI PIZZAS
With these Mini Pizzas you really have the chance to make them your own. Cover them with tomato and cheese and then pick from any number of topping choices: Pineapple and ham, pepperoni or even chicken and sweetcorn. Alternatively create your own unique toppings.
Ingredients 450g strong white bread flour 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 7g sachet fast-action yeast 350ml warm water 2 tsp. salt
Equipment: Large bowl Oven: 240C, Gas Mark 9, 220C Method: In a large bowl, mix together the yeast, flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Once this is all mixed together, create a well in the middle. In a separate jug, mix together the oil and the water and then pour into the bowl. Then, work the liquid into the flour mix to create the dough. Leave the bowl to one side for 15 minutes. Create a well-floured surface and put flour on your hands then begin to knead the dough. Do this for about 2 minutes until it is soft and even. Put the dough back in the bowl and cover it with oiled cling film. Leave it once again to one side (preferably in a warm place). When the dough has risen to double its size, heat the oven and place a baking sheet on a high shelf. Then dust another sheet with flour before splitting the dough into 8. Roll 3 balls thinly into circles and put them on the floured sheet. Use a thin layer of sauce on top with some seasoning and cheese of your choice. Bake for 12 minutes until golden then add fresh toppings of your choice and use the rest of the dough to create more!

Dead-heading and Seed collecting
You will nearly always get more flowers for longer if you can spend some time regularly ‘dead-heading’. That means removing faded flowers to stimulate the development of more flowers, and of new shoots on shrubs and roses.

If the dying flowers are left until they form seed pods, the plant thinks its job is done for the year and it won’t bother to produce any more flowers.

However, with many of your plants, which have probably cost a packet from the local garden centre, you may want to leave some of the flowers until seed heads are produced so that you can collect the
