Hello Lyndhurst, Well we have had a real treat with all the Olympics recently. The Opening Ceremony was a real triumph of our British history. Quite a spectacular performance. Well done to all those fantastic volunteers! In the Games themselves I have loved watching the gymnastics which I have to say is my favourite. I remember seeing these as a teenager and being in complete awe. I have to say, I still feel the same! The swimming, diving and watersports too, they are all great to watch. At the time of this writing we still have a week to go so fingers crossed we get some Gold medals!! TINY BABY DEER HAS A LOT OF BOTTLE The New Forest Wildlife Park Wildlife adventure for all the family She was only 1.4 kilos when she was found and was severely dehydrated, but rescued baby roe deer Bryony is now recovering and is being bottle fed on goats’ milk three times a day. Bryony, who is now 8-9 weeks old, is the second roe deer fawn to be handed in to New Forest Wildlife Park. Just two days old when she was found in May, Bryony was very small, and had to be bottle fed day and night by keepers Lynda Reynolds and Donna Liversedge in their own homes. But Bryony has now been moved to her own en closu re at th e p ark, n ear Longdown in the New Forest, and her bottle feeds have been reduced to three times a day. She has put on weight and will be introduced to the rest of the deer herd when she is bigger. For the time being the other roe, fallow and sika deer, many of which roam free in the park, can come up to the enclosure fence to greet her from time to time.

Bryony is also making friends with Bracken, a roe deer that was just three days old when she was found by a member of the public in May last year, still with her umbilical cord attached. Bracken and Bryony are the only roe deer at the park, since roe deer can be extremely difficult to look after in captivity. When rescued from injury or accident roe deer can suffer from post capture myopathy, a condition where the stress of capture causes muscle breakdown and sudden death. “We don’t know if Bryony’s mother had abandoned her or had been killed, because deer mothers often leave their fawns hidden somewhere safe while they go off to feed,” said Head Keeper Shanna Dymond. “If you find a baby deer it is always best to leave it to see if the mother will come back and then check on it later. “But Bryony was very small and very dehydrated, so we had to act fast. It is lovely to see her looking much better and we hope to be able to integrate her with the rest of the deer herd soon. She is small and dainty but also very frisky, and she seems to be getting on well with Bracken, so we hope it will all go well for her.” Donna Liversedge said she enjoyed looking after Bryony at home. “I miss having her at home. She is such fun and got into everything. But she’s better off at the park with the other deer and I’m glad she is looking so healthy,” she said.

The New Forest Wildlife Park is run by Carol and Roger Heap, who have been involved in wildlife conservation for over 30 years. The park is involved in international breeding programmes for endangered species and also works with the RSPCA to rescue injured or abandoned animals and where possible return them to the wild. Carol and Roger Heap and several members of their family also run the Chestnut Centre Conservation and Wildlife Park in Derbyshire and Battersea Park Children’s Zoo in London. New Forest Wildlife Park has muntjac deer, bison, otters, owls, wallabies, wolves, ferrets, polecats, water vole, badgers, wild boar, lynx, Scottish wildcats, foxes, pine marten, harvest mice and a butterfly house (the latter open from Easter) – all in 25 acres of unspoilt New Forest natural woodland. OUT AND ABOUT in Hampshire by Pat Dimmock Winchester is a college town with a generous mix of different types and styles of not only shops and restaurants but people too. I went with a friend on a lovely sunny day in June when the lime trees were at their perfumed best. It was a fantastic day for strolling and looking around and people watching. We could have chosen any number of places to eat including places with outside seating. If I’d been feeling a little more adventurous that day I would have chosen the noodle place and taken a seat in the sun, but as it was I was in the grips of fancying an all day breakfast Winchester Cathedral (in background) which we had indoors in a Photo: Pat Dimmock pleasantly cool Weatherspoon’s. After lunch we had a stroll around the University square and also around the Cathedral. I’m not sure that small children would be entertained but older ones interested in history would certainly find it appealing. The present Cathedral was finished in the early 16th century but was built on a site of much earlier churches. Just north of the present building is the earliest, built in 635 by the King of the West Saxons, Cynegils. There are tours for anyone interested in knowing that bit more which is included in the price of the admission ticket. It would be wise to plan the trip ahead, especially if you have children, to ensure that everyone is going to be happy and to check for seasonal opening times. All ears for over 7 years Founded in 2005 Kellear Hearing is part of a family run business that has had offices in Bargates since 1970. After a career in the Royal Army Medical Corps spanning nearly 30 years Paul Kelly the practice director was used to the effects of loud noises and was looking for a new challenge. What to do in your Garden in August Well, so far it’s been a bit of a disappointing Summer, with really sunny days being few and far between. I think it’s safe to say that living in the U.K. one has to learn to grab good garden days when they come along. Some things you can do in your garden this month include: • Keep an eye open for any Enjoy the beauty of sunflowers in summer areas of bare soil in your garden and mulch them to aid in water retention and the suppression of weeds. Care must be taken though not to cover up seedlings or to allow a build up of mulch against the stems of plants, specially if you are using grass cuttings. • If you have herbs in your garden then now is a good time to start picking some to dry for the winter months ahead. • You can start looking at and buying Spring bulbs now and make plans for where you want to put them. • Go around your garden and harvest any seed heads that are ready. It is best to collect them in brown paper bags or envelopes and label them straight away so you don’t forget what they are. • Check roses for any leaves that have Blackspot or Rust, pick these off and dispose of them in the bin not the compost heap. • If Narcissi bulbs are on your bulb shopping list you might want to consider planting at least some as soon as they arrive. If you do this you will have flowers by Christmas to brighten your garden. • Check for and remove any suckers (a secondary shoot growing from the root or base) from roses, shrubs or trees.

• It goes with out saying that any hanging baskets that are not in a
position to benefit from rainfall need to be checked and watered regularly. An idea I’ve had is to take photos of your garden – and this would be a project for throughout the year – to plot and plan, not only what flowers and plants work well in different areas but also what could use being moved or replaced. If there is a spot that lacks colour or structure it would be more obvious when the photographs are put together with a plan of your garden. If you have drafting or drawing skills perhaps a large piece of paper (butcher’s paper is good as it comes in a roll and can be torn to size) can be used to draw a basic plan of your garden and the photos attached. Do you have a water butt in your garden? It used to be a fairly standard fixture in gardens when I was a child, but I’m not sure they are making the come back that they should. If you don’t have one yet why not look around for one of the right size and price range for your needs. Chances are good that as soon as you’ve got it rigged up it will stop raining.

An Invitation to Wildlife Natalie Rogers from the Hampshire Wildlife Trust tells us about her top tips for creating a wildlife friendly space in your garden. Welcoming wildlife into your garden does not mean that your garden has to be messy and full of nettles. There are lots of ways to encourage wildlife and create a stunning space to enjoy at the same time. My key piece of advice is never to feed the plants; feed the soil. By creating your own compost heap, you will have sweet-smelling, wonderful, free food for your garden. Try not to use pesticides or slug pellets, as it can have a detrimental effect on the soil. Water is the most important element. Adding water into your garden will attract a wide variety of creatures: some that live in it and others that visit. Make sure there is easy access to the water by creating a shallow area with pebbles or something similar. Plant with wildlife in mind. Choose plants with simple flowers and open centres so that bees and other insects can easily reach the nectar. S hr ubs and t rees w it h ber ries such as Pyracantha, cotoneaster, alder buckthorn, hawthorn, yew, holly, elder and blackthorn are great for visiting birds and provide a natural source of food. You can also plant a native hedge. It will be an excellent habitat for wildlife and attract birds, moths, butterflies and other insects. Leave seed heads over the winter and cut back grasses and perennials only in the spring. The stems provide shelter to overwintering insects, such as ladybirds and butterflies. The New Forest Meddlars is a mixed Morris dance side, formed in 1990 and based in Lyndhurst in the New Forest. We dance mainly in the Cotswold and Border traditions, but vary our performances with new dances, some collected at festival workshops and some we devise ourselves. During the coming winter months, we shall be meeting at the Scout Hut in Romsey Road, Copythorne on Tuesday evenings to practise and to learn new dances. Morris dancing is a great social activity so why not join us. New dancers and musicians are always welcome.

New Forest Organ Society Our concerts are monthly (usually 4th Tuesday in the month) and we have professional musicians who come from all over England to give concerts who all bring their own modern electronic organs and play a variety of music, big band, Latin, light classical etc. The Society has been giving concerts for 33 years and our audience is 180-200 each month so very popular. Visitors are very welcome at £3.50 per concert but please phone either of the 2 contacts listed below to reserve tickets.
