Bournemouth Air Festival By the sea and completely FREE — the best place to be this summer!

Backed by the Royal Navy, and with air cover provided by scores of heavilyarmed military aircraft and Royal Navy ships, a crack team of Royal Marines will launch a waterborne assault on Britain's best-loved seaside resort this August.

The mock "coup" is just one of the countless events that make up Bournemouth's spectacular annual Air Festival, taking place over three days from August 19th – 22nd.

More than a million visitors are expected to flock to the town's clifftop and beaches for the event which includes displays from the world of aviation, including the world famous Red Arrows (Friday, Saturday & Sunday), the incredible Eurofighter Typhoon, Royal Navy Black Cats Helicopter Display Team and the recently announced addition to the line-up, Royal Netherlands Air Force, displaying their fantastic F-16 Fighting Falcon, The Parachute Regiment Freefall Team - ‘The Red Devils’, The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment's Parachute Display Team ‘The Tigers’ and war bird Hunter Jet, ‘Miss Demeanour’ – all of this is completely free of charge!

The Royal Navy will be supporting the Festival with a host of assets including HMS Bangor (open to visitors) RFA Largs Bay and the Royal Marines will be undertaking a beach assault on to the shores of the UK’s leading destination – a not to be missed event on Saturday & Sunday.

In the evening, ‘Night Air’ entertainment is the perfect way to end an incredible

Festival line-up. On Thursday, Friday & Saturday watch performances by the Royal Marines Combat Display Team and HM Royal Marines Band – there are also fireworks, a hot air balloon glow, an evening to night time air display, live music, street entertainers, fireworks and aviation inspired film screenings.

New for 2010 and not to be missed is the fantastic dusk air display on Thursday evening starting from approx 8pm and featuring the Red Devils, Miss Demeanour and Dutch F-16.

More Marvellous Markets at Moors Valley Moors Valley Country Park and Forest is set to build on the success of hosting its very first Local Produce Market, by hosting more throughout the summer months.

The Markets will become regular features at Moors Valley on the second Friday of each month, namely 13th August and 10th September.

The market, run in conjunction with New Forest Markets, will be located near to the Visitor Centre and shoppers can expect to find locally produced beef, pork, chicken and scrumptious sausages, as well as eggs, and handmade wooden games, jewellery, cards and crafts, goats cheese, salad dressings and perfect preserves.

The smell of freshly made bread will tantalise the nostrils as local bakers sell their wares, and those with a sweet tooth can enjoy an array of sticky delights including home-made

sweets, desserts and honey from local beekeepers.

Vegetables, seafood, soap and much more will be available at the market, which is a great place to buy something for a special supper, a birthday present or even just a personal treat!

There is also the chance to win a Moors Valley Hamper in the free prize draw in the Country Shop !

Ballard boys excel at National Championships The IAPS National Athletics Championships were held in Birmingham at the Alexander Stadium on Monday 5 July.

Ballard School, New Milton had 4 boys representing the Wessex region.

We had the U14 Boys Relay Team consisting of James Hughes, Jamie Williamson, Sam Johnstone and Alex Watson-Lee. Both James Hughes and Jamie Williamson were also representing the Team in the 400m and high jump respectively.

Jamie Williamson won silver with a high jump of 159 cm. Although he was very pleased to finish as the runner up, he was slightly annoyed that he could not reach his personal best of 166 cm.

James Hughes, on the other hand, was ecstatic as he won, gold, the 400m and was declared National Champion.

And to top it all off, these two boys along with Sam and Alex were able to save their best for last. The final event of the day was the U14 Boys 4x100m Final and the Ballard Boys ran a new personal best and new School record in the time of 50.61 seconds to claim gold and be crowned National Champions! Surprisingly, they entered the final with only the 4th fastest time. Well done, Team!

As most of you know, Waggy Tails rescues and rehomes any sort of dog, no matter what age, breed or size. However there is one breed that comes our way more often than the others and that is the Border Collie.

These are very special dogs, highly intelligent and active. For that reason they are often bought or adopted by inappropriate owners (not intentionally – just insufficient correct advice!). They MUST have lots of mental and physical activity, and then they will make wonderful companions. At the moment we have four: -

Teddy is 10 and very handsome. 10 is not old for a border collie and he is a good example of this, being agility trained, he is an obedient and active dog. He only has one eye, as the other was diseased and had to be removed.

George is a collie cross, about 9, and loyal companion. He lives in a foster home with five other dogs and is a perfect gentleman. Outside he tends to be a bit more guarded and will retaliate if approached by the "wrong" dog. He needs an owner who understands this behaviour. George does not like cats!

Spot is about 6. A very attractive English border collie, with some blue merle colouring. He is very bright and absorbs information very quickly. He has not had much input so is having to learn things he should know already but is coming along fast. Another affectionate and active boy.

Jessie is about 2. She is a very small collie cross who is delightful with people, children, and strangers. She is very affectionate and playful. She loves a ball, which she will roll towards you when she wants a game! Her only fault is her fear of other dogs, so she needs an owner who will gradually teach her that they are not a threat and take her to a qualified trainer for socialisation and training.

Golfing Tips with Chris Tyrrell PGA Qualified Coach

This month’s focus will be on swing basics.

It is true that if you watch television or watch professionals play golf that all their swings are slightly different. That is great news because if your swing is different to theirs it may still work. The secret is to stand well (Last months article) and make sure your swing contains a few basic movements. All the top golfers and consistent golfers will have the following.

Transfer of weight. – Like any ball sports you must transfer weight back away from the target and then through towards the target to get maximum power and create a working technique. Approx 60 –70% of your weight should be on your back leg at the top of your swing and all of your weight transfers onto your front leg after impact with the ball.

The transfer of weight should be achieved by rotating your upper body (shoulders) 90% so your back faces the target. Your hips

should rotate slightly less ( 25%) and your front knee should flex ever so slightly towards the back foot. (Make sure you do not sway) See the pictures below.

This means the upper body rotates more than the lower half hence creating power.

The position of the club is done through the setting of the hands at the top of the swing.

If done correctly the shaft of the club should point towards the target with your thumbs set under the shaft. In doing so make sure your leading forearm (left arm for right handers) stays extended throughout the backswing.

Other factors that can affect the shot are rhythm and timing. These things can be explained during lessons with your PGA Professional and will improve with practice.

Good luck and remember that practice makes PERMANENT so make sure you practice the correct movements.

Mrs Matthews’s Mongrel by Judie Jones Mr Matthews never wanted children or pets. So Mrs Matthews was astonished to be presented with a tiny golden bundle of fluff on her 70th birthday and even more astonished when two days later Mr Matthews dropped dead.

Whilst singing Abide With Me, Mrs Matthews could only wonder if Babe, for that is what she’d called the puppy, was feeling lonely on his own and whether she would arrive home after the internment to puddles or worse.

Babe, an offspring of unknown parentage, thrived until at six months was the size of a Shetland pony with feet like dinner plates. His head resembled a Dexter Bull and he smiled, or some said snarled, like a Rottweiler. His appetite was huge, consuming one large tin of Best Beefy Chunks a day, as well as many tit bits. He slept alongside Mrs Matthews at night, which as he grunted and snored with regularity, was much the same as when Mr Matthews had shared the marital bed.

Babe adored children. He’d sit in the park watching them at play; allowing them to pat, squeeze, cuddle and generally maul him, whilst Mrs Matthews looked proudly on.

Babe’s favourites lived next door. Single mother of eight, nicknamed “falls easy” by the locals, permanently had one damp bundle clamped to her breast; in her cavernous womb another ‘mistake’ awaited emergence into the welfare state, whilst the remainder of the squalid tribe milled around. Babe would hang, like a giant fleece, over the dividing fence, watching every movement. “Falls easy” admitted that when the odd father came to claim visiting rights, she was never sure if she handed over the right child.

Babe did not like men. When out with Mrs Matthews, any male that came within distance, would be seriously goosed. This caused huge annoyance, embarrassment and occasionally a frisson of delight to the recipients. His favourite trick was to lie behind the front wall and when a man passed by, would leap up at the gate, emitting blood curdling yowls.

The waiting list for cardiac surgery grew longer.

‘He’ll have to go,’ said the Mayor after Babe attempted to remove the buttons from his fly. ‘Should be put down,’ said the Town Clerk. ‘Slap an

19 ASBO on him,’ suggested the Planning Officer. ‘Perhaps aversion therapy,’ suggested the local dog handler.

Mrs Matthews was devastated and unsure what to do.

Loud screams emerged from next door. ‘My baby’s gone,’ shrieked a distraught “falls easy”.

The police arrived and with Vicks smeared liberally under their noses, they searched the house and garden. No sign of the infant. A search of the village was organised.

Satisfied that her neighbour was in the safe hands of a female liaison officer, Mrs Matthews took Babe for his afternoon walk. Walking towards the embankment, she heard loud calls of alarm and ran to investigate.

There, crawling up the middle of the railway line was the missing child. Great consternation and hysteria followed the obvious sound of the London to Glasgow express, which was about to round the bend.

Immediately, Babe slipped his collar, galloped full pelt down the embankment and without stopping, hurtled across the railway line, grabbing the dank infant in his cavernous jaws and raced to the other side as the express thundered through.

Babe was a hero. His picture was on the front page of the tabloids. The RSPCA awarded him a medal for bravery and a minor royal was despatched to make the presentation.

On the platform, Babe stood proudly between the duchess and the mayor. His eyes flicked several times towards the nether regions of the mayor; a nasty grin on his face, but the aversion therapy kicked in.

‘Smile please.’ The cameras flashed. Babe was determined to have the last word. With one last leer at the mayor, he calmly cocked his leg.

August’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Always give your plants good thoughts!

Trees and Shrubs Some trees and shrubs that have flowered can now be pruned. They should be pruned after flowering. If bearing fruit, prune after cropping.

Climbers and Wall-Plants Clematis shoots are now in vigorous growth, if training regularly secure them to their supports. Wisteria can be pruned back to four or five leaves now.

Roses If there are two few new canes one or two of the oldest strong ones can be kept; cut back their side shoots to between four and six inches (ten to fifteen cms).

Borders and Beds To keep up the vigour of flowering plants they should be watered well and fed fortnightly. Give a good mulch afterwards. Always pick flowers regularly.

Bulbs and Corms Daffodil bulbs that were lifted after flowering and placed in store should be planted towards end of month, or any spring bulbs.

Rock Gardens and pools Old flowering stems should be cut down to prevent from unwanted reseeding. Be sure to keep pools filled to make up for loss by evaporation.

Lawns To make a new lawn or fill in bare patches seed should be sown before the end of the month.

Fruit As soon as the last fruit has been picked all su mmer-fru iting raspberries & blackcurrants should be pruned before the end of the month.

Vegetables All spring vegetables should be sown in the first two weeks of August e.g. cabbage, radish, parsley, winter spinach.

Greenhouse and Frame Cyclamen tubers rested during the summer may be started into growth again, knock them from their pots and replant them in potting compost.

House Plants While away, to keep plants well watered place them in a large clear bag with a little water in the bottom, blowing up bag and tied tight.

THE 46th ANNUAL EXHIBITION OF THE NEW FOREST ART SOCIETY will take place at the Lyndhurst Community Centre between 16 and 22 August 2010.

New Forest Children’s Choir through to the Category Finals of the BBC Choir of the Year Competition New Forest Children's Choir sing with "sheer joy" say the judges The Christchurch based New Forest Children’s Choir go forward as one of the four children’s choirs in the country to compete in the Category Finals of the BBC Choir of the Year competition 2010.

Over 2000 choirs took part in the area selection stage across the four categories; Children’s Choir, Youth Choir, Adult Choir and Open Category. The winners of the area selection stages were put through to the National Selection stage and from that stage four choirs from each of the four categories have been selected to compete in the Category Finals being held at the Birmingham Symphony Hall on 6th November 2010.

The Category winners and two wild-card winners selected from any category will go head to head for the title of Choir of the Year at the Grand Final on 28th November at The Royal Festival Hall, broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and BBC FOUR. Following their audition in the Children’s Category, the choir were thrilled with the judges’ comments which praised their musicality, great choral discipline, focus, movement and energy • “A beautiful sound – smiling faces, clear tone and exquisitely clear words”.

• “So focused as a performance that it really touched us”.

• “Sheer Joy!”

This is the latest accolade in their short career to date, which includes: • Winning the prestigious 2009 Christchurch Performing Arts Festival Singing Trophy • Winning at the Bournemouth

Music Festival in the Pavilion • Being invited to perform a concert at the Royal Festival Hall in March 2010

In addition to their competition wins, the choir regularly performs at local charitable and community events, which have included; A candlelit concert at Christchurch Priory (Naomi House Hospice for Children), Christchurch Mayoral Reception, Lighthouse Concert Hall, Christchurch Christmas Parade, St Thomas’s Church Lymington.

The choir for boys and girls aged from 4 to 14 years old has an interesting and varied pe rformance programme ranging from classical choral singing including works by John Rutter to traditional gospel and songs from the musicals.

The choir was founded in 2008 and is led by Musical Director and Conductor Alison RussellHayward and accompanied by Patrick Lee. Alison is former principal of the Royal Ballet School and former director of London Theatre/ Dance Company. She is currently soprano 1 in the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus as well as Musical Director and member of Harmony vocal quartet.
