Woodland Wildlife Weekend We are celebrating all things woodland during our annual Woodland Wildlife Weekend on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th April. Woodland is home to more species than any other land-based habitat in the UK. However as with other wild habitats, much of it only exists in isolated pockets surrounded by urban development or non-wildlife-friendly farmland. Woodland once covered the majority of Britain but now only 3% of our land is home to precious ancient woodland. These fragments are under threat, but also aren’t big enough to sustain our local wildlife. That’s why we at the Wildlife Trust are campaigning for joined-up spaces for wildlife across the country, or what we call ‘Living Landscapes’. For example allowing room for wildflowers alongside our crops, or leaving green corridors through our towns and cities would be a massive help for wildlife looking for food and a home. Combined with wild spaces like nature reserves, they could provide a range of different habitats for all kinds of flora and fauna. Most importantly they would link up habitats, rather than leaving them fragmented as they are now. Things have improved slightly for woodland in recent decades. Campaigners and conservation charities like the Wildlife Trusts successfully pushed for the protection and restoration of woodland areas over the years. The Trusts got involved, and now look after more than 400 woodlands across the UK - from flower-strewn ancient woodlands to wild coastal woods, damp and rich in lichen and moss. Woodland needs ongoing protection from invasive species that aren’t native to the UK and damage from human activity. It’s especially important to proactively improve woodland by providing a diversity of habitats so that many different plants and animals can flourish. This might mean clearing away some more common trees to allow sunlight
to reach rarer shrubs and flowers below. Other beautiful wildflowers such as wood anemones, ramsons and celandine, are also emerging. Now is a perfect time to celebrate and explore local woodlands, and all the diversity they offer. The signs of spring are impossible to miss both above our heads and below our feet – so why not take time out during our Woodland Wildlife Weekend to reflect on nature’s beauty and appreciate what our natural environment has to offer? Meanwhile above our heads birds are building nests and finding partners. This time of year is perfect for spotting them - as they’ll be out and active but leaves aren’t yet on the trees. There are also many less obvious plants and creatures: smaller, shyer, nocturnal perhaps, or even underground. As well as celebrating woodland’s showy species this spring, how about looking for the quiet ones, the little grey ones, the ones that hide under rocks? National accolades for Hampshire photographer Basingstoke-based businesswoman Amanda Tricker, owner and professional portrait photographer at Liamby Photography, is celebrating after securing two national accolades from the highly respected Guild of Photographers. Amanda – a specialist in newborn, baby and children photography – was awarded membership of the Guild’s ‘Photographer’s Bar’, and was named as one of the Top 10 newborn and baby photographers in the UK, at The Guild’s annual awards ceremony, held recently. The Photographers Bar Amanda joins fewer than 100 other photographers who have achieved the Photographers Bar in the three years since its inception. During this time, over 30,000 images have been entered for assessment by photographers across the UK and from overseas. The Photographers Bar is a distinction that is very difficult to achieve, as it recognises an exceptional level of professional skill in photography.
Following rigorous assessment throughout 2015, by the Guild’s expert panel of judges, Amanda’s photography was considered to be of sufficiently high quality. Speaking of her success, Amanda of Liamby Photography, said: “I am absolutely delighted to have had my work recognised by the Guild and to now be a member of the exclusive Photographer’s Bar. The newborn photography industry is now well established and highly competitive, so to have been named within the Top 10 across the UK is also absolutely wonderful news and a huge boost to the business.” Lesley Thirsk, Director of The Guild, said: “I am delighted for Amanda as this is a great achievement! Submitting and having images assessed every month for a year and reaching the required standards to become a member of the Photographers Bar is very, very demanding. It illustrates her commitment, skill and consistency. She should be very proud of what she has achieved!”

Younger people can get it too, or lose faculties due to strokes, accidents and more. They’d need to apply to take over via the Court of Protection – this can drag on for months with fees of over £1000. Check your iPhone to prevent huge data use If you’ve upgraded your iPhone to iOS 9, beware. It automatically turns on ‘Wi-Fi Assist’ which means if your WiFi connection’s weak it supplements it with pricey mobile data. If you think you’ve started using data more quickly, this is likely why. It’s a way for couples to transfer a proportion of their personal allowance (the amount you can earn tax-free each tax year) between them. You’ll be eligible if: • You’re married or in a civil partnership • One of you earns £10,600 or less • The other is a basic 20% rate taxpayer • You were both born after 6 April 1935 If so, you can shift £1,060 of their allowance to the other which means you don’t pay tax on it, a gain of £212. Tastes so good...
LEEK AND POTATO SOUP
An easy recipe that can be enjoyed at any time of the year. It is a perfect meal for either lunch or dinner and can be served with bread or without. Enjoy as a starter or a main course and add pepper if you choose.
Ingredients for 4- 6 servings 225g of potatoes (cut into cubes) 2 medium leaks (sliced) 1 onion (sliced) 1 tbsp of vegetable oil 1.2 litres of vegetable stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper 150ml double cream or crème fraiche
Equipment: 2 large pans, hand blender or blender Stove: High enough to boil Method: Take a large pan and pour in the oil. Then add the onions, leeks and potatoes and cook until they have soften. Do this for 3-4 minutes. Proceed to add the vegetable stock and bring it all to the boil. Then add the seasoning and simmer until the vegetables are tender. Once you have done this whizz all of it together (you can do this either with a hand blender or a blender). Reheat all the mixture in a clean pan. You can then stir in some cream or crème fraiche. Serve with bread and butter if you choose.

Mini Cooper S Clubman By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk
The old Mini Clubman was no oil-painting, but this one could easily earn its place on the podium at Legs 11. It’s a looker alright. The brand new Mini Clubman must have been breast fed at birth, because it’s far bigger than its siblings. That doesn’t mean it’s fat – no way. This car is well formed and its proportions are just right. And because it’s not exactly a shrinking violet, the Clubman is likely to win over quirkier types who might otherwise have gone for mid-size family car choices, such as the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. The story hasn’t always been good for the Clubman, though. The first generation had a useless, single rear door that meant UK passengers were forced to step into the road. This didn’t help sales and the Clubman therefore wasn’t exactly the rock star that BMW, Mini’s owner, was expecting. But the Germans have seen the light and the previous rear-hinged ‘clubdoor’, has been kicked to the kerb in favour of two ‘normal’ back doors. They make it far easier for passengers to get in and out of the car. Then there’s the barn-door boot. You’ll remember that from the last model. Well, that stays put, but now the doors can be released manually, or if you ticked the hands-free tailgate option, a sassy little kick under the rear bumper will open them up. Inside, the comfortable seats are kind to your backside and feel supportive, especially during long periods on the road. The car’s uncluttered dashboard is dwarfed by a massive screen that sits where the speedometer on older Minis used to be. The controller on the central console manages most of the Clubman’s systems, so there are fewer buttons on the dash to confuse or divert you. As the Clubman is the largest of the current Mini litter, it has, predictably, the most capacious cabin. To be frank, with a big load area too, the word ‘mini’ seems rather outmoded. The whole motor is 270mm longer than the five-door Hatchback, allowing for oodles
of room in the front and respectable space for two adults in the rear. The boot is about the same as a VW Golf’s, so you’ll get the family shopping in – and a toddler’s buggy. The Cooper S Clubman Auto is easily the most gratifying to drive. Out at the Mini’s media launch on the roads surrounding San Sebastian in northern Spain, the most powerful petrol drove gokart-like on the straights - just as a Mini should. It’s a shame the slightly pulpy suspension can drizzle on your chips in the corners, with body roll kicking in if you enter the twisty bits too hard. But that can be forgiven, because the Cooper S generates more than enough pull to keep you cheery. 189bhp can be squeezed from the S’ 2.0 litre turbocharged fourcylinder lump, and with the eight speed auto box, a zero to 62mph sprint in 7.1 seconds is easily achievable, finishing up with a top speed of 142mph. Even though these figures might make the car sound insatiable for fuel – it’s not. With the superb automatic gearbox you can officially get an average of 48.7mpg out of the Clubman - and the CO2 emissions are 134g/km, meaning road tax is a trifling £130 per annum. The state-of-the-art 2015 Mini is a gargantuan step-up from its forerunner, and it puts right pretty much everything that was awry. The Clubman now has more doors, better space, good looks, and it really is exciting to drive. The Cooper S version is especially guaranteed to bring a grin to the face of anyone who slips behind its wheel.

The Adventures of Nellie The Hampshire Publications Camper Van It was Nellie’s Birthday recently. She is now officially 200,000 kilometres old! How old? She is doing really well, for an oldie. Well can you believe it but I have never driven her… until now! She has been a part of the family for three and a half years, and I have never sat in the driver’s seat. I am not usually a nervous driver and will get in any car to drive off with no worries at all. For some reason I have not reached to take the wheel and Stephen has done all the driving. Nellie is a Japanese, ‘automatic’ girl (this is a family magazine so I will refrain from making any jokes about that...) and everything is backwards to what I know. Watching Stephen pull this lever, push that button and generally not drive anything like I drive my little Citroen (mind you has anyone seen me on the road?) had put me right off. I decided I was not to be beaten, and that I would finally sit in the driver’s seat and Nellie and I would drive off into the sunset together. So off we set for a car park... to practice. I was nervous I can tell you. I felt like I was going to an exam that I was totally unprepared for. Ever had that feeling? Hayden in the back was not much better, asking if I really wanted to do this? Some vote of confidence that was. So we arrived. Stephen got out and ceremoniously handed me the keys. I got down from my safe, highly
Nellie is officially 200,000 km old! respectable passenger’s seat and moved over.... to the driver’s seat. The first thing I needed to do was adjust the leg space as I was a foot short of the pedals. Not very helpful. I pulled the lever and lurched forward at speed, nearly shooting myself through the windscreen. Not the best start. Hayden found it highly amusing and burst out laughing. I think it was nervous hysteria. Stephen just stood there, smiling calmly while I tried to not look too embarrassed. Head held high in the air of course. So, the window wipers are on the left not the right, the lights and indicators on the right not the left, there is no handbrake, no clutch and no gears. Easy, what was I worried about? It isn’t that different... is it? Then there is the question of the brakes which have to be coordinated with the position of the parking, driving and reversing lever. Oh what was I doing? Well I managed to move forward, slowly. I even managed to turn big old Nellie

23 around and drive onto the small road but to my dismay it was cordoned off a little further down. How many roadworks at the moment? Now I had to reverse into someone’s driveway. Suddenly a car appeared wanting to get into the very same driveway! It really is a wonder I am here to tell the tale at all. Carefully and calmly, well sort of, I did it! I reversed with not a damaged daffodil in sight, and we started moving forward again. I drove back to the safe haven of the car park and stopped, breathing a sigh of relief. I asked Hayden if he was ok in the back and there was somewhat of a hesitation before a weak voice replied, “Er, yes...” I wasn’t convinced and I think Nellie was feeling the strain too. Stephen continued to smile - I think it was a fixed grin to get him through the moment. But I had done it. I could now drive Nellie! A real treat after all my efforts, was Nellie then taking Stephen and I to see Elkie Brooks at the Tivoli in Wimborne! I have loved Elkie for years and can often be heard singing in the car at the top of my voice to, “Fool if you think it’s over” and others. If you haven’t heard me, it is just as well!

Debbie in the driving seat! I couldn’t believe it, but similar to Nellie, Elkie had had her 71st Birthday a few days earlier. How wonderful to still be performing at that standard, 39 years after her first visit to the Tivoli. The theatre was packed, literally there was not an empty seat in sight. We all swayed, hummed and smiled through good old “Pearl’s a Singer”, “I think I am going back”, “Gasoline Alley”, “Nights in White Satin” and many more great favourites. If you are under 50 you may not have a clue what I am talking about! Apologies for that, just showing my age again. One gentleman (and he wasn’t that young either) even managed to scramble up onto the high stage with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Unfortunately he was taken back stage and returned unable to give Elkie the flowers himself. I do hope she got them. Elkie has quite a sense of humour too and she certainly made us laugh at times! It was a brilliant evening. Elkie had a standing ovation at the end and Nellie was thrilled to bits. A great end to a very successful day. Where will Nellie take us next... and who will be driving? New Forest Arts Society The New Forest Art Society held its Annual General Meeting in February, along with a mini exhibition and a social gathering for all members. Reflecting over the last year the Society has built on its solid base of the past 51 years and is rising to the challenges of staying forward looking and providing a programme that responds to the needs of members. The Society prides itself on being inclusive and welcoming to new members and visitors. The meetings over the last year have seen artists demonstrating their skills over a wide genre of styles/media. The coming years programme is just as exciting including life drawing, animal studies in a loose style or pastels, landscapes in oil, framing and presentation session and critique of members’ work. There are day workshops open to members and non-members and planned visits to galleries.
The Summer Exhibition will be held in August as usual and a two day Art Sale in October. The programme of monthly meetings (third Wednesday of most months 7.30 – 9.30pm), workshops and exhibitions are on the Society’s website www.newforestartsociety.weebly.com and the Society’s notice board in the Lyndhurst Community Centre, where meetings/exhibitions take place. The meeting on 18th May is Jake Winkle, who will be demonstrating African animal studies in a watercolour style. Annual membership is £22 and young persons (16-25 years) can join with a 25% reduction on membership fee. The Society welcomes new members and visitors attending evening meetings for a small entry fee (£4). The website has a contact form for all enquires or ring the Society’s secretary on 023 8028 3670. On Your Plot
April showers to October fun It’s wonderful to see the first fresh, local, asparagus appear for sale this month and if you’ve a bit of space spare on your plot now’s the time to plant this gourmet crop. Buy one year old crowns and plant them immediately into well drained soil. You should be able to take a small harvest next year and they’ll carry on cropping for up to 20 years!
Jobs for April :-
• Keep an eye out for late frosts and cover any vulnerable plants • Harden off indoor sowings before planting out • Start off French beans and Brussels Sprouts under cover • Fancy something a bit more exotic? Try growing some peppers and aubergines - sow this month in a greenhouse or polytunnel • Plant an asparagus bed • Earth up potatoes once the first shoots appear
Now is the time for April showers and with the weather warming up all the time and some gentle rain you’ll soon be seeing lots of changes on your veggie plot. It’s a time when any indoor space, be it greenhouse, cold frame, or just window sills, is likely to be filling rapidly with young seedlings. If you are thinking of planting some of your seedlings out then don’t forget to harden them off first. You can move the pots outside each morning, bringing them in at night to gradually acclimatise them to the change. Do remember too that late frosts can still happen in April, damaging plants that are unprotected. Watch the weather forecast and if there’s any danger of frost then use fleece or cloches to protect plants where necessary. On the subject of cloches, save any empty plastic bottles that you may have. Cut the bottom off and you are left with a wonderful mini cloche to protect seedlings that are recently planted out. Push the plastic down into the soil firmly and it will keep off not only some of the chill but also any slugs that may have their eye on tasty young leaves.
Are you a fan of Halloween? Pumpkins can be quite expensive come the end of October and then there’s always the hunt for one just the right size. Why not have a go at growing one (or several!) of your own this year? Pumpkins need a long, growing season to ripen well so now is the time to start them off. There’s lots of different varieties, including some giant ones if you want something really impressive to carve. Look out on the packets for ones that are early ripening for the best chances of success. Pumpkin seeds are huge so it’s easy to sow just one to each pot. I’d sow at least 3 plants, if they all germinate and mature it’ll probably be more than you need (they can take a lot of room as they grow) but it’s better to have spare in case you loose some early on - if they all grow well you can always pass one on to a friend or neighbour and have a competition to see who gets the biggest pumpkin! You’ll need to keep your young plant inside until all risk of frost has passed. When it comes time to plant the pumpkin out it will like lots of nutrients in the soil. Dig out a large hole and put in lots of well rotted compost - or you can even plant your pumpkin straight on top of an old compost heap. They’ll bloom with wonderfully exotic looking, huge yellow flowers and it’s wise to consider removing the growing tip once three fruit have set as this will give a better chance for larger, riper, pumpkins. Support the growing fruits on a bed of straw to avoid them dropping off or becoming mushy. Are you enjoying purple spouting broccoli at the moment? You can buy summer varieties to plant now, or try Calbrese (this has the green heads) which is best planted straight into the beds where they will grow.
