Dear Lyndhurst, Welcome to your April / May issue of The Lyndhurst Directory! I hope you have a good Easter planned and will have the opportunity to take some time out. I had a great Mothering Sunday, very relaxing and just what I needed. With busy lives as we lead, it is important to have some time for ourselves.

We are in fact going to the Isle of Wight for Easter with my parents to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary. This time we are staying in a large house on the cliff top. We are really looking forward to it and I know Mum and Dad can’t wait! Here’s to some family time.

News & Events Spring flowers

The appearance of the first spring flowers is always appreciated after the lack of colour in the winter scene. Plants growing in deciduous woodlands need to flower before the leaves in the tree canopy restrict the amount of light reaching them. One of the first flowers to appear is Dog’s Mercury which can easily be overlooked as it has small insignificant green flowers and relies on the wind for pollination as there are few insects about.

It is poisonous and used to be taken as a purge. Another plant with small green flowers is Moschatel or Town Hall Clock. The group of flowers at the top of the stem do indeed resemble a clock with four faces.

Other more colourful early flowering plants are the bright yellow stars of Lesser Celandine, together with Wild Daffodil and Wood Anemone. Wood Anemones are mostly white, but pink and even purple blooms can occur. Later on you will see Ground Ivy, Pale Wood Violet and the poisonous Woodspurge and Stinking Hellebore, which both have green flowers.

In late April/May, carpets of blue in woodlands are a common sight. The native English Bluebell, renowned for its deep colour and perfume, is only found in England and Wales and a few places in Northern Europe. It is different from the Spanish Bluebell, which is a garden escapee and has more robust, but paler flowers. The English Bluebell has delicate flowers which only grow on one side of the stem. A contrast in colour, the Early Purple Orchid sometimes grows alongside bluebells, but it can also be found on grassy slopes. Other woodland flowers are the white flowers of Ramsons, or wild garlic (which smell strongly, especially if the stems or leaves are cut or damaged), the dainty white Greater Stitchwort, Common Dog Violet and Wood Sorrel.

Wood sorrel has small white bell shaped flowers and leaves consisting of three heart shaped leaflets.

Along roadsides and other grassy banks Coltsfoot flowers make a bright yellow splash of colour - the flowers appear before the leaves. Primroses, which often bloom over the winter in protected garden sites, usually appear from March to May on hedgebanks, grassy slopes and in woodland. The name actually means ‘first flower’. There are two types of flower- the pin-eyed, in which the female stigma, protrudes above the male anthers, and the thrum-eyed, in which the male anthers can be seen above the stigma. This is an adaptation to promote cross fertilisation of the plants by insects. Often growing alongside these in damp places can be seen Cuckoo Flower or Lady’s Smock which has pale pink blooms.

Community News

New Park Keeper Joins Moors Valley Team A family trail based on the popular ‘Percy the Park Keeper’ books by Nick Butterworth is set to become the newest addition to Moors Valley Country Park and Forest near Ringwood this year, offering a host of fun outdoor activities. There will even be the chance to follow in Percy’s footsteps by entering an online competition to become a Park Keeper for the day.

The engaging stories revolve around the adventures of Percy, a kindhearted park keeper, and his many animal friends, including a badger, owl, fox, rabbit, hedgehog and lots of mice. They are a firm favourite with children and parents alike, and instantly recognisable from both the books and the Percy the Park Keeper animated television series.

Education Ranger Tracy Standish said “We love the friendly characters in Nick’s wonderful stories and are looking forward to bringing them to life at Moors Valley.

We hope this fun family trail will also help show visitors what our Rangers do to look after our Park for both people and wildlife.”

The trail card, costing £2

each, will include a range of multiple choice questions and a variety of interesting activities including making an animal home, spotting the bird and finding mini-beasts. It will appeal particularly to younger children and is available daily from 5th April until 28th September 2014.

The online competition will offer the chance for a family of four to be Park Keepers for the day, in addition to receiving an annual season ticket for Moors Valley and a wheelbarrow full of goodies.

LEWIS Savings Masterclass

Far too many people think "savings rates are so low, why bother doing anything?” Yet, while rates are indeed spitworthily low, don’t be complacent. Active, on-the-ball savers can grab up to 6% interest. So I want to give you a rate -boosting masterclass. The aim's to put every penny where it earns the max interest. Many specialist higher-rate accounts only let you pay in limited amounts for short amounts of time. So if you've big savings, you need to fill them up, then snowball on to the next best, and so on. Don’t overly worry about safety. All UK-regulated savings (which all the accounts below are) have the full £85,000 per person, per financial institution savings safety protection. Yet that’s not a reason to just put money in and forget about it. Monitor rates every few months and if they drop, ditch and switch.

First, clear expensive debts. The highest guaranteed return for savings comes from clearing expensive debts, starting with the highest rates. If your debts cost more than your savings earn after tax, clear what you can and you’re onto a winner. This applies to mortgages too, unless you’ve early repayment penalties. Though with a mortgage, always have a cash emergency fund in savings before clearing it.

Earn 6% AER in a regular saver, PLUS free £100 The highest rate on the market is a regular savings account, but it's only available to new or existing Firstdirect.com current account customers. Though as First Direct's won every customer service poll I've ever done and currently offers £100 to switch to it, that's still an attractive proposition. Its 6% regular saver lets you put up to £300 a month away for a year and the rate's fixed. HSBC.co.uk customers get 4% AER on a similar product, while anyone can get the LeedsBuildingSociety.co.uk regular saver at 3.05% AER. Full info and more best buys at mse.me/regularsaver Use current accounts to get 5% AER easy access I always used to say “never store cash in current accounts, as you earn nothing". While that still holds true in the main, bizarrely, these days a few bank accounts offer super-high interest rates to draw you in. The highest is Nationwide's FlexDirect (www.nationwide.co.uk/flexdirect) at 5% AER, but you only get this rate for a year, and only on balances up to £2,500. The stand-out deal's Santander 123's (www.santander.com) 3% AER on all savings if you've £3k£20k. It has a £2/month fee, but pays up to 3% cashback on bills. Weigh up if you'll earn more than the fee before switching. With both, you need to properly switch to them.

remove 20% or 40% of your interest. You can put £5,760 in each tax year, and it remains tax-free year after year until you withdraw it. It's a no-brainer. Don't think you're locking the cash away - the top easy access deal is from postoffice.co.uk at 1.8% AER on £100+, with two penalty-free withdrawals allowed each tax year. This allows you to transfer old Isas into it as well to boost their rates. The rate includes a bonus for 18 months, so it'll almost certainly plummet after. Make a note in your diary to ditch and transfer. Full best buys and Isa FAQs at www.mse.me/isas.

Lock in for up to 2.57% AER If you’re prepared to lock cash away without access, you can earn more in a fix. Yet it's worth noting many pundits predict UK rates will rise in 2015. So today's best rates may not look so good if you lock in for too long. These are the current top fixed deals for both normal savings and cash Isas. They change daily – latest rates are at mse.me/fixedsavings One-year fixed savings: United Bank 1.9% (www.ubluk.com).

One-year cash Isa fix: Britannia 1.85% (britannia.co.uk) Two-year fixed savings: United Bank 2.28% (www.ubluk.com). Two-year cash Isa fix: Post Office 2.25% (www.postoffice.co.uk) Three-year fixed savings: Bank of Cyprus 2.57% (www.bankofcyprus.co.uk). Three-year cash Isa fix: Virgin Money 2.4% (virginmoney.com) Check your local credit union too Credit unions are local savings and loans co-ops. Some have deals that beat the market's best buys, such as 3% savings, 2.15% AER one-year fixes and 2.5% easy-access cash Isas. They're very localised, so whether you can get these deals depends on where you live or work. Locate ones near you at www.findyourcreditunion.co.uk.

1.5% AER standard easy access savings If you’ve any left, the final option's a normal easy access savings account. The top payers are www.tescobank.com and www.icicibank.co.uk at 1.5% AER, although Tesco's account includes a bonus rate for the first year, so it's likely to plummet afterwards. If you’ve big cash, as you’re only protected up to £85,000 per institution, split the cash into different institutions.

If you're prepared to up the risk a little, it's worth looking at peer-to-peer savings, which can pay up to 6%. Here your money's lent to someone who wants to borrow it, via online financial matchmakers such as zopa.com, fundingcircle.com and ratesetter.com. Whatever one’s affection for the child, remember that the child cannot survive well in the long run if he or she does not have his or her feet put on the way to survival. It will be no accident if the child goes wrong: the contemporary society is tailor-made for a child’s failure.

4. LOVE AND HELP CHILDREN

Today’s children will become tomorrow’s civilization.

Bringing a child into the world today is a little bit like dropping one into a tiger’s cage. Children can’t handle their environment1 and they have no real resources. They need love and help to make it.

It is a delicate problem to discuss. There are almost as many theories on how to raise a child or not raise him as there are parents. Yet if one does it wrong much grief can result and one may even complicate his or her own later years. Some try to raise children the way they were themselves raised, others attempt the exact opposite, many hold to an idea that children should just be let grow on their own. None of these guarantee success.

The last method is based on a materialistic2 idea that the development of the child parallels the evolutionary3 history of the race; that in some magical way, unexplained, the “nerves” of the child will “ripen” as he or she grows older and the result will be a moral,4 well-behaving adult.

Although the theory is disproven with ease – simply by noticing the large criminal population whose nerves somehow did not ripen – it is a lazy way to raise children and achieves some popularity. It doesn’t take care of your civilization’s future or your older years.

A child is a little bit like a blank slate. If you write the wrong things on it, it will say the wrong things. But, unlike a slate, a child can begin to do the writing: the child tends to write what has been written already. The problem is complicated by the fact that, while most children are capable of great decency, a few are born insane and, today, some are even born as drug addicts: but such cases are an unusual few.

It does no good just to try to “buy” the child with an overwhelm of toys and possessions or to smother and protect the child: the result can be pretty awful.

One has to make up his mind what he is trying to get the child to become: this is modified by several things: (a) what the child basically can become due to inherent make-up and potential; (b) what the child really wants to become; (c) what one wants the child to become; (d) the resources available. But remember that whatever these all add up to, the child will not survive well unless he or she eventually becomes self-reliant and very moral.

Otherwise the end product is likely to be a liability to everyone including the child.

It will help enormously if you obtain a child’s understanding of and agreement to follow the precepts5 contained in this book.

What does have a workability is simply to try to be the child’s friend. It is certainly true that a child needs friends.

Try to find out what a child’s problem really is and, without crushing their own solutions, try to help solve them.

Observe them – and this applies even to babies. Listen to what children tell you about their lives. Let them help – if you don’t, they become overwhelmed with a sense of obligation6 which they then must repress.

It will help the child enormously if you obtain understanding of and agreement to this way to happiness and get him or her to follow it. It could have an enormous effect on the child’s survival—and yours.

A child factually does not do well without love. Most children have an abundance of it to return.

Southern Pet Services Lead The Way At Southern Pet Services we have to pinch ourselves everyday to realise how lucky we are to work with dogs on a daily basis. After setting the business up in the summer of 2011, we have grown from strength to strength and now have a team of 8 people including ourselves. With myself and my wife Jeanette as the founders and head trainers, we have 3 fantastic ladies walking for us, an assistant trainer, soon to be apprentice and 2 agents we use for boarding.

We have two parts to the business, the Pet Services and Leading The Way Training School.

Leading The Way Training School…

As full members of the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT) we use only Force-Free Positive Reinforcement methods of Dog Training. We are very passionate about helping people understand the dog that they have and how to have the most fun with them.

Dogs learn through associations, and the more positive experiences they can have in everyday situations the happier your dog will be.

All of our training classes are held outside in a secure fi eld, giving the

dogs the best exposure to realistic everyday scenarios, and limiting the stress of being in an enclosed space with other dogs.

The benefits of having a dog regularly socialised with other suitable dogs is very visable in a lot of the puppies we have worked with. They are able to play politely with other dogs and are less excited when seeing other dogs, than dogs who aren’t regularly socialised. Just one walk a week, or one day in daycare can have such a great impact on their behaviour.

Again as full members of the IMDT, and having obtained the Open College Network Level III ‘Principles of Dog Training And Behaviour’ qualification, We are able to offer 1-2-1 behaviour consultations for any unwanted

17 behaviours. Again we use only ForceFree Positive Reinforcement methods of training. Our methods help to build a bond with you and your dog and improve their confidence. We have helped a number of dogs with basic training such as recall, to cases of extreme aggression.

If you are getting a puppy, an initial Puppy Consultation can be invaluable, we can help you set everything up in terms of equipment needed, e-books to be read and the basics of training and socialisation taught to give you a head start. The most important time in any dogs life is the first 12 weeks, before they are allowed out and about, therefore it is so important to socialise from the minute you get them home, but also as important to make sure it’s a positive experience.

Tastes so good...

SLOW COOKED CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA

One of the many great advantages of the slow cooker is that there’s no need to marinate dishes that normally require it. This gentle lengthy cook enables flavors to develop and mingle together naturally during the lengthy cook. This is wonderful to come back to after a hard day at work or play.

Ingredients:

Equipment: Processor

4 chicken breasts, cubed 2cm fresh ginger root, peeled and grated 3 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 1 small red chili, chopped and deseeded 1 teaspoon ground coriander 2 teaspoons garam masala 1 red bell pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 medium sized onion, peeled and chopped 2 tablespoons sunflower oil 1 can plum peeled tomatoes 2 tablespoons tomato puree 100ml creme fraiche, or sour cream Good handful of fresh coriander, finely chopped ( garnish)

Method: In a processor place the ginger, garlic, chili, ground coriander, garam masala, red bell pepper, onion and sunflower oil.

Process until you achieve a paste.

Put the chicken in a bowl and add the paste. Stir and coat each chunk of chicken in the mixture.

Mix the tomato puree with the canned tomatoes.

Place the chicken into the crock pot and pour the tomato mixture over the top.

Cook on a medium heat for 4 -5 hours until the chicken is beautifully tender and succulent When ready to serve gently stir in the creme fraiche whilst still in the slow cooker and serve on a bed of wild rice, garnished with the chopped coriander.

The Adventures of Nellie

The Hampshire Publications Camper Van Well I do laugh about Nellie, the Hampshire Publication’s Campervan and her long black skirts to cover up her rather large thighs, but these machines really are something else! Nellie looked small and rather overshadowed by the imposing façade of these rather sinister, and very powerful looking vehicles. The Tank Museum at Bovington, is quite incredible! www.tankmuseum.org It was our first visit. Harry came with us, a good friend of Hayden’s and much to Hayden’s excitement. Off we went.

Boys in the back playing on DS’s and then opening the game’s cupboard (strategically placed next to the back seat), and taking out the “not allowed to say yes or no” game. It was fun listening to them trying to catch each other out, laughing away, whilst we were driving along. As there is a table in front of the back seat it so much easier to play a game, even whilst driving.

So we arrived at the Tank Museum around 11.30am on Saturday morning. It was pretty busy which was great. In fact we had picked a weekend when the army

barracks were having a “Family Weekend” and the fairly new recruits were showing all their relatives where they lived, what they did on training etc. We were even treated to a demonstration in full combat uniform and a fast moving tank later in the day. This was separate to the Tank Museum, but right there in the arena just in front of the museum building.

In front of the Mark IV WW1 tank The museum itself is enormous! There are so many tanks and displays we didn’t get to see all of them, so it is a good excuse to go back. One of the first things we did was walk through a mock up of the First World War trenches. It was realistic, dark and with sound effects that really gave you a feel for how hard life was for the soldiers. We then sat in a first World War Tank, the Mark IV. This is the only place on Earth that you can go into a First World War tank, so it is pretty special! The volunteer guide was brilliant and told us about the heat, 65 degrees plus, with red hot pistons sizzling. Where was health and safety in those days? The maximum

23 23 speed was a mere 4 miles an hour. It was difficult to imagine being stuck in one of those, whilst being fired at constantly.

We were then educated about life during the Second World War. We even sat in an air raid shelter with full sound effects of bombs dropping nearby. What an experience! Harry did look a little apprehensive at this point, and I can well understand. Again the guide was excellent, showing us gas masks of the time and painting the picture of a life then.

If any students are doing projects on war and how life was, this would be ideal. The museum gives a very realistic experience that you cannot get from books alone.

On that note, there is a display of a camp in Afghanistan and this I personally found extremely moving. Again it is realistic and you really do get the feeling of how life might be for the soldiers. There is also a board full of people’s signatures who have been to Afghanistan as well as some names of soldiers who have lost their lives and are no longer with us. This was hard hitting.

Hayden and Harry made their own game, which I was impressed with. They ran around trying to find the heaviest and fastest tank on display. Boys being boys made it a competition to see who could

beat the other one and find it the first.

The tank museum is such a sturdy, huge place, it was totally fine for them to go off and play this game. Don’t tell Harry’s parents but I did ‘lose’ them for a few minutes and did wonder how long it may take to find them amongst the masses of tanks on display. Fortunately they wanted some sweets, so finding me was of benefit to them… Actually both were extremely well behaved and I had no worries whatsoever. So the day was enlightening, educational, impressive and emotional all at the same time. All of the Tank Museum volunteers have a wealth of data to give you and there is much to see and experience. I recommend you go, if you haven’t already. It reminds us that life is for living…

We did of course have our customary picnic in Nellie with a cuppa as you can see here.

Time for a cuppa after all that...

New Milton Decorative & Fine Arts Society Churches all over Europe are decorated not just with holy carvings but also fabulous monsters, mythical beasts and grotesques rampaging round the walls, the pew ends and hidden corners.

In our May lecture, Imogen Corrigan will introduce us to some of these weird beasties. ‘Here be Dragons’ is the title of her talk on these strange images. She says: “Some are funny, some downright disrespectful, but all show a mixing of devotion with deformity, piety with profanity, reverence with roguishness.

Were our ancestors bonkers or did these creatures come from travellers’ tales, or just bad food?”

Imogen will explore these questions and consider whether there is a moral point behind many of the images. Her lecture is on Thursday 8th May at The

Memorial Centre, Whitefield Road, New Milton and begins at 10.30 am Coffee is served from 10.00 and visitors are welcome at a charge of £5.
