Dear Lyndhurst! What great weather we have had. Let’s hope this continues and the children, as well as ourselves, all have a great summer! In this month’s issue of The Lyndhurst Directory we have our very own ‘Nellie’ feature. This is The Hampshire Publications campervan we invested in recently. I love our trips out and this month we went to Mottisfont, near Romsey, which some of you may know well. We had a wonderful warm day walking around the gardens and the house, having a picnic in the grounds and doing the Winnie the Pooh trail. All good fun! Please take a look at our photos on pages 20 and 21. There are also lots of different articles for you so do enjoy a good cup of tea or coffee and have a read. We love cats!
We are huge cat fans and love everything about cats and in particular our own cat Carlo, whom we lovingly call Mister Carlo. We love how independent cats are, which makes them a good pet to own, especially if you cannot be at home all day, as they are not as demanding as a dog and can be left for longer periods. Although they need lots of care and attention, they sleep for around sixteen hours a day and love to hunt. Cats generally adore being outside, but they also love nothing more than a warm lap and some fuss, the exception of Carlo who just demands attention all day (except when he’s sleeping).

Ikea sell these cheaply. Traditional games cost nothing and are super fun so you don’t have to hire expensive entertainers.

Flying start for New Forest Tour after rise in passenger numbers The New Forest Tour has seen its most successful start to the summer season yet with a big rise in passenger numbers. In its first 11 days of the season, 2,806 passenger journeys were made on the red, green and blue routes compared to 1,695 in the same period last year – that’s a year on year increase of 66 per cent. After several days of sunny weather, the new blue route is now the most popular of the three, exploring the coast at Keyhaven, Milford on Sea and Barton on Sea, as well as holiday parks, campsites and attractions such as New Forest Cider at Burley. The most popular day of the Tour so far was on the blue route last Tuesday (9 July), when 242 passenger journeys were made on a weekday during term time. The most popular day had previously been the green route on Sunday, 1 July, last year when there were 147 passenger journeys. The Tour is run by Go South Coast in partnership with the New Forest National Park Authority. It has grown in popularity, starting with 9,000 passenger journeys in 2007 and rising to nearly 34,000 passenger journeys in 2012. The Tour also contributes an estimated £500,000 to the local economy every year. Chris Gregory, sustainable transport manager at the New Forest National Park Authority, said: ‘We’re delighted with the start the Tour has had this summer. Launching the new blue route has made a big difference, but the more established red and green routes are also much more popular this year. The weather has been kind and passengers have been attracted by the grandstand views from the top deck that you just can’t get anywhere else.’ Andrew Wickham, managing director of operator Go South Coast, said: ‘We’ve had an excellent response. There’s always some uncertainty about launching a new
route, but we’re very pleased to see it’s now the most popular. We’ve had reports from drivers that they’ve been nearly been full – and that’s during a weekday before the start of the school holidays. But there’s still plenty more work to do to make sure all three Tour routes are an even greater success.’ A new timetable for the blue route began on Sunday (14 July) to make it more reliable and offer passengers more time to enjoy the natural scenery. It can be viewed at the new look website where visitors can also enjoy a 10 per cent discount if they book online at www.thenewforesttour.info. The red and green routes of the New Forest Tour are commercially run, but the blue bus is supported by part of a £3.8m Department for Transport fund to encourage 370,000 car-free journeys in the New Forest and South Downs National Parks by March 2015. The Tour is also supported by Hampshire County Council. All routes start run every hour daily until 15 September. New Forest Tour passengers can also ride the Beach Bus for free with a valid Tour ticket. The new bus service runs from 27 July to September 1, calling at Southampton Hythe Ferry, Lepe Country Park, Exbury Gardens, Buckler’s Hard, Beaulieu and Lymington. Moors Valley pays tribute to over 150 volunteers A dedicated group of volunteers recently enjoyed a summer social gathering at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest to say ‘thank you’ for all their hard work. More than 150 volunteers have worked alongside the Rangers at Moors Valley over the last four years. This dedicated team has been responsible for leading a programme of health walks and cycle rides, created especially to give local people the opportunity to take part in regular outdoor exercise in an enjoyable environment. Healthy Lifestyle Ranger, Karl Prince, said: “This incredible band of volunteers has been
invaluable in helping to make our Activate 1000 programme such a success. “Since the programme began nearly 5,000 local people have taken that first crucial step towards a healthy lifestyle. What to do when someone dies When someone passes away, the grief of loss combined with anxiety over completion of the necessary formalities can be overwhelming, particularly where there is no experience of the official procedures involved. For those who are fortunate to have family or friends close by, their support can be invaluable.
What is a Grant of Probate?
Initially:
Probate is a formal procedure which confirms the Executors’ authority to deal with the assets in accordance with the terms of the Will. There are a number of requirements with which an Executor must comply and they also have a responsibility to ensure all tax affairs, both pre and post death are dealt with properly.

There are a number of government departments which must be notified. The Registrar can provide details of a “tell us once” service when registering the death

If a Will has been made, you need to check who are the appointed Executors, as they have responsibility for all matters after someone’s death. The Will may also contain wishes about the funeral.

If the Will is held by solicitors, all Executors will need to give their authority, together with an original Death Certificate, before the will can be released or details given. Solicitors are bound by rules of confidentiality even after the client has passed away.
No, it is not necessary for all estates. If the estate is small it may not be required. Also, if assets are held in joint names they will normally pass automatically to the surviving owner with very little administration. Otherwise, the usual process of dealing with assets of the deceased is by means of a Grant of Probate. What happens if there is no Will? There are rules which set out who can apply to be appointed to deal with the estate. This person is called an Administrator and has similar powers to an Executor. Tastes so good...
POTATO & TOMATO HERB GALETTE
This simple recipe is a real crowd pleaser and makes a great lunch in its own right or a delicious side dish. Use fresh herbs if possible but you can substitute with dried if necessary. The galette may be made in a pie dish or individual steel food rings. Ideally floury potatoes should be used for this recipe as they have more starch which holds the galette together better. If you don’t have food rings this can be made in a pie dish in exactly the same way but will take longer to cook.
Ingredients for 4 servings 2 large tomatoes 3 or 4 medium sized floury potatoes* Handful of fresh thyme and chives 60g butter Salt & pepper * King Edwards are a good choice - Maris Piper work too although they’re not as floury. Diane Johnson
Equipment: Food processor with slicing disc or mandolin. Sharp knife. Food rings and a baking tray Oven: Gas Mark 7, 220°c Method: Melt the butter in a pan. Using some of the butter grease the rings and the baking tray where the rings will sit. Place rings onto greased area. Wash and chop the herbs, dry on kitchen roll to stop them sticking together. Reserve a small amount for garnish. Thinly slice tomatoes with a sharp knife and leave on a cooling tray to allow excess liquid to drip. Thinly slice the potatoes using the food processor and use immediately. Layer 2 or 3 slices of potato in the rings. Using a pastry brush or the back of a teaspoon, paint the layered potato with the melted butter. Season lightly, sprinkle some herbs and top with tomato. Repeat until you have filled the rings, finishing with a potato layer which should be buttered to brown nicely. Pop in the oven for 30-40 minutes and remove when the crust is golden brown and the potato feels tender with a knife. Scatter with herbs to garnish and serve piping hot.

HELICONIA
A stunning, tropical looking plant which is a close relative of the banana family, the Heliconia has large leaves and tall, pointed ‘flowers’. Although they are not completely hardy in our climate, many of the species are more tolerant of cool conditions during summer growth. If raised from seed in a warm greenhouse these plants work well in pots outside during mid summer to provide fantastic tropical foliage provided they are place in a reasonably warm, sunny position. Pots provide the option of bringing these plants indoors should inclement weather strike and indeed to promote flowering as they prefer heat and humidity to bring them on to best effect.

The Adventures of Nellie The Hampshire Publications Camper Van We recently invested in a dual purpose camper van. One that can not only carry all the magazines to our very own valuable distributors, but one that also has a fridge, cooker, cupboards and (a very modest…) ‘upstairs bedroom’ for Hayden, as well as a ‘cozy’ bed for Stephen and myself. Nellie, the black camper van, has quite an imposing character with long black skirts, silver wing mirrors and large silver grills at the front. If you ever see her when you are out and about, please give her a wave as she is rather fond of that! She got her name from the combined words, Nissan and Elgrand which is her make. You can see her in true style below! We have designed these articles as a little fun to show you where Nellie takes us and maybe give you some ideas of where to go in the Hampshire area. This month we visited Mottisfont Abbey near Romsey which is a National
Trust “romantic house and gallery set in beautiful riverside gardens”. It was a glorious day, despite the weather forecast suggesting otherwise. The gardens are really quite beautiful and, having a nine year old son, the Winnie the Pooh trail with various things to find, tasks to do and actions to take along the route, made the walking so much more fun. On the opposite page you can see Hayden jumping in the air off the wooden blocks – I have to say, a bit like Tigger would! Of course Pooh sticks had to be thrown over the bridge and I am pretty sure that Hayden won every

time. It was even necessary to build a house for Eeyore as you can see below. We also visited the house itself and the Winnie the Pooh trail continued, which was excellent. There were honey pots to find in each room and the Winnie the Pooh paintings had to be carefully looked at to answer the questions correctly. A great idea! Much of the original furniture was

sold, but for the more discerning customer there are art galleries and various exhibitions to view as well as an interesting array of mechanical toys which you can play with. All in all we had a great day out, enjoying the fresh country air, and some family time, before setting off and getting back to work again. I highly recommend a visit to Mottisfont if you have never been before. We are National Trust members ourselves and certainly do not use the card enough! Where will Nellie go next? Taking the Call

She couldn’t look at the phone, sure it wouldn’t ring if she did. The woman in the office had said that there was a possibility there wouldn’t be a call but that, if there was, it would be this afternoon. Five o’clock already. A half-eaten sandwich lay on the coffee-table tray by the side of her chair. She had decided against a flask of coffee or tea, both of which might occasion too many visits to the bathroom, choosing a jug of water and a glass instead. Now she really wanted a cup of tea. With her foot still painful and swollen, would she get back to the sitting-room in time if the call came? Why hadn’t she bought one of those phones to walk about with? It would have been better to buy one of those than the six tins of paint now under her kitchen table, acquired in a bout of do-it-yourself enthusiasm. What had she been thinking of, unable even to change a light bulb without falling and hurting herself. The neighbour who’d taken her to casualty had been very kind, stressing that she was to ask him if any more light bulbs needed changing and that it was lucky just to have broken a bone in her foot and not, at her age, her whole leg. Smiling to herself, she mused that a newly-married young man in his twenties probably would consider someone over sixty (though only just) rather aged. With his blue eyes and ready grin, he reminded her of her father. Her adopted father. She had adored her parents. The warmth of their love and care remained. It hadn’t been a surprise to learn she was an adopted child. With her sleek dark hair and deep brown eyes, her mirror showed no resemblance to either of her parents. After her twenty-first birthday, the three of them had sat together in the garden. She’d learnt that her army captain father and her mother had been posted to a garrison near Beirut, Lebanon, attending a nearby church with an attached convent. One day, they had been approached by the Mother Superior and taken to see a baby girl a few days old. The mother had come to them in the last stages of pregnancy, given birth to twins and then died, despite huge efforts to save her. The other child had, apparently, been dangerously ill and not expected to survive. Unable to have children themselves, they had eagerly agreed to take her, with a brief document giving her date of birth and the name her mother had given the nuns. ‘Convent of the Holy Cross’ was stamped at the top.

Over the three years since her parents had died, curiosity concerning her beginnings gradually grew. She had written to the Central Registry and Information Office for the Armed Forces in Beirut, sending them a copy of her only document. The answer now rested on the arm of her chair. A little shiver of excitement ran down her back as she gazed at it. Her twin had survived. Following the Convent’s closure some twenty years before, papers as lacking in detail as her own had been transferred to the Registry. Her twin had been adopted and taken to Australia. Contact had been made by the International Red Cross. The letter from them stated that her twin had been given her name, address and telephone number, and was arranging to make contact - today. She wondered, again, if her sister looked exactly like her. Would she be friendly? Had she got a family of her own - how wonderful to be part of bustling family life again.
