As you can see, there is a lot to see and do, in and around our beautiful village of Lyndhurst!

Money may be a bit tight sometimes but that doesn’t mean that the fun has to stop. Indeed it can mean the complete opposite. Think of the times you’ve had in your life that have been great. Have they always been the ones that have involved money? Not necessarily. Read on for some simple ideas that you can do alone or with your friends and family that cost little or nothing but could bring a great deal of pleasure.

Dig out some cards or board games. When did you last sit down and play draughts, or crib? Traditional games are just that - traditional because they stand the test of time. Google the rules if you don’t know how to play - there’s no excuse!

Don your wellies, make a little flask of tea and go out for a good old stomp across the beach or if you’re not lucky enough to live near the coast, a local field or nature reserve. There are always places to walk. Get the wind through your hair and aim to be out for a good part of the day. You should sleep better at night too.

Check out local galleries and museums. Often these are free and they can hold a good range of interesting exhibits.

When the weather gets nicer, stick a tent up in your garden and ‘go camping’ for the night!

Grab some pencils or paints and just draw for the pleasure of it. Even if the end result isn’t going to be put into the Tate just the act of putting pen (or brush) to paper is rather therapeutic.

Veteran pilot and singer help to launch World War II exhibition A veteran pilot and a singer who entertained the troops during World War II have helped launch a special exhibition, shedding new light on the New Forest’s pivotal role during the war.

A treasure trove of unseen photos and stories has been unearthed from people’s attics and cupboards for display at the New Forest Remembers exhibition at the New Forest Centre in Lyndhurst.

The display was officially opened by Julian Johnson, chairman of the New Forest National Park Authority, and New Forest East MP Julian Lewis. The exhibition reveals how Allied servicemen based in the Forest prepared for D-Day, how German and Italian prisoners of war were kept and how local residents did their bit for the war effort.

The free exhibition is part of the New Forest Remembers: untold stories of World War II Project run by the New Forest National Park Authority, and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and ExxonMobil at the Fawley Refinery. The two-year project aims to bring the war years alive through archaeological surveys and digitally capturing the memories of those who lived through the war.

Brenda Logie holding a photograph of herself in the 1940s launch were veteran pilot Arthur Poore DFC and former singer Brenda Logie. Mr Poore flew in several bombing raids over German cities, whilst Ms Logie entertained thousands of Allied troops stationed in the New Forest.

Both have shared their photos and memories, along with dozens of others, illuminating how ordinary people lived and fought through the conflict.

Ms Logie said: ‘I think it’s marvellous that they’ve got so much material together. I don’t think the younger generations know enough about this period and the stories which are jolly interesting.’

The display also includes a previously unseen diary entry from His Majesty King George VI, detailing how in the run up to the Normandy landings he paid a secret visit to the Exbury Estate which was requisitioned as a naval training base, HMS Mastodon.

In a diary made available by the Royal Archives, the King revealed how he sailed down the Beaulieu River to the Solent and saw a fleet of more than 300 landing craft and ships from the deck of the command ship HMS Bulolo, just days before the start of Operation Overlord.

13 Nicholas de Rothschild, whose family have lived at the Exbury estate since 1912, was at the exhibition opening and said: ‘I think it’s a wonderful exhibition.

I spent some time recording the people at HMS Mastodon telling their stories. I know why it’s so important to keep them.

That’s why this project is such a tremendous achievement.’

Julian Johnson, chairman of the New Forest National Park Authority, said: ‘It never ceases to amaze me how much longforgotten material is in people’s attics and hidden away in cupboards. So much of this material has been thrown away in the past and it is refreshing seeing so many old photographs, diaries and recorded reminiscences being exhibited. It is important that we retrieve as much of this

historic information as we can and to ensure that it is kept for future generations. I am proud that the National Park Authority has been closely involved with this project.’

New Forest East MP Julian Lewis said: ‘What this exhibit has managed to achieve is bringing together local memories and records with parts of the national collection that people will normally never be able to see unless they’re a specialist researcher.

What’s so particularly striking about this project is that people can continue to add their own memories and tributes long after the exhibit has finished.’

The New Forest Remembers exhibit will run at the New Forest Centre in Lyndhurst until 28 April.

Riverside Hotel Supports RNLI by Fish & Chips Suppers

The Master Builders Hotel, situated on the banks of the Beaulieu River, has raised over £2000 for the RNLI by simply donating £1 from every Fish & Chip meal eaten in the Riverside Restaurant or Yachtsman Bar. The Hotel gardens run down to the river and marina so , as well as all the attractions of the surrounding New Forest, a whole range of watersport activities and sailing facilities are available to guests. The Hotel felt that it was therefore particularly important that it helped raise money for the RNLI who as a charity, depend on donations to help meet the cost of saving lives at sea. The RNLI is funded solely by these charitable donations.

Their volunteer lifeboat crew members give their time for free, but they need training, well-maintained equipment, lifeboats and shore facilities. Support from the public means the crews can save lives quickly, safely and effectively, something the Master Builders Hotel and its guests are proud to be of assistance.

The Hotel is aware that there are over 230 lifeboat stations around the UK and Ireland, and the lifeguards patrol over 180 beaches each summer. Each year it costs over £140M to run this lifesaving service. For every £1 donated, 85p goes to the rescue service, and 15p is reinvested to generate more funds – not a penny is wasted.

Last year lifeboats were launched 8,321 times around the coast of the UK and Ireland, rescuing 7,912 people - an average of 22 people a day.

Lifeguards responded to 14,519 incidents and helped 16,414 people on beaches in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. We’ll never know how many more tragedies they prevented through warnings and advice.

The Master Builders Hotel intends to continue this fundraising activity and looks forward to handing over many more thousands of pounds for this worthy cause in future.

Paul Boissier, Chief Executive of the RNLI, said: ‘I was absolutely bowled over by the generosity of the Master Builders Hotel and its customers in supporting the RNLI’s vital work of saving lives at sea. Thank you all so much. This donation is extremely valuable to us; it will allow us to buy essential clothing and safety equipment for two members of an inshore lifeboat crew.’
