College Student Art Exhibition a Great Success The Balmer Lawn Hotel is delighted to say that the Art Exhibition put on by the students of nearby Brockenhurst College last week, was a stunning success. The Hotel donated the use of several of their main interconnecting function rooms, so that a whole variety of different art could be displayed.

The Exhibition was opened by David Yates, Chief Executive of the New Forest District Council with Di Roberts the Principal of Brockenhurst College, and in all over 80 people attended the Press Preview. These included a range of artists from around the New Forest, representatives from the college, many of the student exhibitors and their parents, and representatives from the parish and district councils.

This was a golden opportunity for the public to view the work of these fantastic artists and see just how good they were.

The work on display included fine art, ceramics, graphics, textiles and photography drawn from the best work by the students across the full range of courses at the college.

The benefits for the students were more than just being able to exhibit their work in a public setting, but also gave them a unique experience that may well inspire them to take their talent further.

Chris Wilson, Proprietor of the Balmer Law n Hotel commented “It was a wonderful evening, showing just how successful it is when business and education work together. We at the Balmer Lawn Hotel already have strong links with the college through its catering department, so it was good to extend this relationship further. The standard of the exhibition was truly amazing�

Apri l’s Gardening T ips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Trees and Shrubs Any trees and shrubs should be planted now this is your last chance if you want the plants to establish strong and healthy root growth.

Climbers and Wall-Plants Get any new plants in now, water them well and apply a good mulch to them around the stem. Clip back any scruffy Ivy now.

Roses Finish any Spring pruning now. It’s too late to plant Roses from open ground now, but there is still chance for container grown ones.

Borders and Beds Hardy annuals of all kinds my be sown, if not already dealt with. With the soil now warming up I would suggest covering them with clear PVC. Bulbs and Corms Gladiolus corms may be planted in batches during the month to provide a succession of flowers both for garden display and cuttings. Remove faded flowers.

Rock Gardens and pools Weed while seedlings are small, replace dead and dying plants and make sure stone chippings are under the crowns.

When weather becomes warmer plant pond plants.

Fruit Newly planted fruit trees should be given mulch of compost to conserve moisture.

Continue spraying but not when flowers are open.

Vegetables Many crops can be sown now in the open Artichokes, Asparagus, Beetroot, Radishes, Parsley, Spinach. Undercover:Aubergines, Celery, Cucumbers, Marrows, Sweet corn, Peppers and Tomatoes. Hoe and hand weed.

Greenhouse and Frame On sunny days greenhouse plants will need more air and water. Shade the young plants from direct sun and start feeding the established ones.

House Plants Increased watering will now be needed, remove dust and dead leaves, many plants can now be propagated by leaf and stem cuttings.

Milford on Sea Food Week: Seven great days for ‘Foodies’!

Milford on Sea Food Week celebrates all that is great about food. This New Forest seaside village is fortunate to be blessed with great places to eat and surrounded by quality local producers, so what better way to celebrate this than to have an entire week dedicated to the joys of food!

Everyone at every age is included, and Milford on Sea Food Week has over 100 activities including: Themed Dining Evenings, Professional Cookery Theatre, Celebrity Shows, Cooking Demonstrations, Educational Talks, Film Shows, Cookery Competitions, Wine Tastings, Dining Offers, Kid's Events & a large Sunday Food Market, all organised by local organisations, clubs, businesses and individuals. A Programme detailing all of the events is on sale in the village shops.
