Air Show Hospitality really takes off! The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation held their VIP Hospitality Day at the Bournemouth Air Festival for the seventh year running and it was a huge success raising an incredible £13,800 for the charity. As if by divine intervention the heavy rain stopped just in time for the guests to enjoy a fantastic flying programme which included the final Bournemouth flight of the iconic Vulcan. The JTYAF was privileged to see the Vulcan to the Sky Team, Bournemouth together with founder and chief executive, Dr Robert Pleming, among their guests for this poignant finale. The exclusive VIP Hospitality Marquee is situated on the beach right at the epicentre of the air and ground displays, so with the best seats in town, superb food and plenty of sunshine it was certainly a day to remember. The JTYAF would like to extend their thanks to all the guests and supporters for their kindness and generosity. They received a wonderful selection of prints, paintings and visits which included an overnight stay at the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines and a visit to Heathrow’s Control Tower. These prizes were donated by local organisations and individuals and formed the basis of a Silent Auction and raffle which raised over £7500 alone. A lovely team of volunteers from Barclays worked extremely hard at the event, meeting and greeting, selling

raffle tickets and organising the Silent Auction. Thanks must go to Di Trott, Liz Marsh, Nina Selvey, and Lesley O’Brien for their continued support and also Barclays for their generous matched funding scheme which makes a huge difference to the total amount raised on the day. The guests were delighted to have the opportunity to meet some of the display teams who took valuable time out of their busy schedules to visit the marquee. A special thank you must got to the Tigers Freefall Parachute Display Team who have been great supporters of the charity this year. All in all this event was the charities most successful so far and they are extremely grateful to the BAF Hospitality Team and Bournemouth Tourism for this great opportunity. The funds raised will make a massive difference to the opportunities that can be provided for local young people. To find out more about the JTYAF please visit their website at www.jtyaf.org

Wildlife News

Talking about Wildlife...

Rockpool Residents Our best childhood memories usually feature a summer day spent at the beach with a bucket and fishing net, peering into seaweed shrouded pools in search of silvery fish and secretive crabs. The excitement of tempting a crab out of hiding with a tasty morsel of leftover ham sandwich or turning over a rock to find a five-armed starfish clinging to the dark underside stays with us for a lifetime. Nothing has changed. The fascinating world of the rockpool is still as alluring as ever, both for the older generation and for our youngsters – so here are a few tips to try with the children this summer. August and September are the best time as the rockpools are full of young blennies, crabs and prawns as well as shoals of small mullet and other fish. If you sit quietly by a rockpool the inhabitants will soon come out of hiding and carry on their busy lives in full sight. Curious blennies will come out to peer at you from beside a rock, quarrelsome crabs will battle it out between themselves and busy prawns will even give you a manicure. Blennies are the nosy neighbour of the rockpool! Insatiably curious, these little fish like to know what’s going on in their neighbourhood. Try dabbling your fingers at

the water’s surface to entice a nosy blenny out of hiding to come and investigate. On a calm day when the sea’s surface is mirror-smooth only the ripples give away the presence of shoals of small fish such as mullet as they swim away from your approach. Look for their shadows on the seabed just ahead of the ripples, as they are easier to spot than the fish themselves. Look underneath stones at the bottom of rockpools to find tiny but beautiful cushion stars, small relatives of the more familiar starfish. As you watch they will glide over the surface of the stone as if on air, heading back to the safety of the dark. To keep yourselves and the wildlife safe, always follow the Seashore Code, gently replacing everything exactly as you found it and handling animals with extreme care. That way they will all survive to provide another delightful rockpooling day in the future. Keep West Parley Tidy! Among other jobs, our WP volunteers litter pick along the main roads and the recreation ground to keep our village a tidy and pleasant place to live. In order to try and increase usage and reduce effort needed by the volunteers some bins around the rec. and sports field have been re-sited. Two new bins have been installed next to the playground – we hope Robin will encourage the very youngest of our residents to develop an enthusiasm for ‘binning’! The dog bins have also been moved to improved positions to help dog owners to dispose of what their dogs produce and not leave it for others to walk in.

Safety First After a recent request from the Parish Council, new ‘Keep Clear’ road markings have been put on road junctions close to Parley Cross to allow Residents to get out of and into side roads such as

Going Nuts about Nature

New Robin bin on the field Gallows Drive, Dudsbury Road, Oakland Walk and Church Lane. Let’s hope this makes it easier and safer for everyone. The Police have been active in the village recently catching a number of motorists speeding on New Road, drivers ‘rat running’ past the shops at Parley Cross and breaching the ‘No Entry’ signs. They also caught drivers parked on the pavement by the shops. The Police cannot be around all the time to act as a deterrent to bad drivers and be seen locally by Residents, but have promised to repeat this exercise.

Children’s Summer Fun Once again we were delighted to host three events for our local youngsters. The two ‘Sting in the Tale’ storytellers delighted large groups of children and adults alike. Graham Rogers’ tale ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Pig’ had lots of huffing and puffing and blowing down of houses while Lizzie Bryant’s tale of ‘Pillywiggins in Peril’ had her audience roaming Parley Wood looking for clues. making traps to catch the Boggarts, saying spells to make the grown ups fall asleep and finding messages to read

17 out. Rangers from Moors Valley led an enthusiastic group of young explorers going ‘Nuts About Nature’ in Parley Wood. There was Moth Bingo, fungus spotting, frog catching, den building and re-stocking the nearby Bug Hotel.

A338 We are sure that residents are aware that ‘the Spur Road’ is due to be rebuilt between 6th September 2015 and 31st May 2016. Information about the proposed work schedule is available on the ‘Dorset For You’ website and will no doubt be repeated in local magazines and newspapers.

Parish Council vacancies We are still keen to fill these vacancies – there are several again now that Pat and Stuart Couper are moving away – but we are delighted to welcome our

Lizzie Bryant’s story walk District Councillor, Barbara Manuel on to the team. Anyone who wishes to be considered for a vacancy should write to or email the Parish Clerk. Details on our web site westparley_pc.gov.uk.

..providing the answers

to your legal questions

Every month the solicitors and lawyers at Harold G Walker will be providing answers to your questions about the law. What is a Pre-Nuptial Agreement? A Pre-Nuptial Agreement is a legal document between two parties before they enter into a marriage or a civil partnership, formulating how they wish to deal with their finances should the marriage break down. Although a lot of people believe that they are legally binding, it will take Parliament to pass a law to make it so. In a landmark ruling in 2010, the Supreme Court held that Courts should give effect to a Pre-Nuptial Agreement that is freely entered in to by each party with a full appreciation of it’s implications, unless in the circumstances it would not be fair to hold the parties to their agreement. Pre– Nuptial Agreements can be enforced by the Courts should a marriage break down, however, it is crucial to ensure that any agreement is entered into under legitimate Toni Oxborough

circumstances as a Judge can potentially overturn any decisions if they believe the agreement was made under duress, both parties failed to take independent legal advice, the agreement was not entered into freely with a full understanding of it’s implications, or there was a lack of financial disclosure between the parties. In addition, the longer the marriage, the less impact a Pre-Nuptial Agreement will have upon a final settlement. A Pre-Nuptial Agreement should be used when: 

Assets were acquired before the relationship commenced;

There is a difference in the parties’ incomes;

There are family or other trusts;

One or both parties have received, or will receive, a substantial inheritance;

There is a family business.

We have just agreed to buy our first house and we’re keen to move in asap! How long does the Conveyancing process take? This is one of the most common questions I encounter in my working day and unfortunately the answer is, it depends! Whilst some transactions complete in a couple of weeks, this is not the ‘norm’. Conveyancing can be a time consuming aspect of any home move depending on the individual circumstances of all parties in the ‘chain’. If the property is empty and you have nothing to sell and you do not require a mortgage, your purchase could be completed relatively quickly. However, this is unusual and it is more likely a mortgage offer will need to be obtained and approved and there will be a chain of transactions to synchronise. Various

searches will also need to be applied for in respect of the property you are buying and a mortgage or structural survey carried out. You can appreciate that sometimes we are reliant on the timescales of third parties! Under these circumstances, it can take anything from 4—8 weeks to get to exchange of contracts and then approximately another 1—2 weeks between exchange of contracts and completion. Every transaction is different and at HGW we understand the pressures involved in property transactions and the practical concerns for both buyers and sellers. We do all we can to progress the transaction as swiftly as we can and make the process as smooth and stress free as possible. Jane Colver Conveyancing

Heritage: Parley at the Crossroads We now think of Parley Cross as being an important crossing of busy roads but West Parley has been the meeting point of a number of important routes for over 2000 years. Riddles Ford, at the southernmost point of the parish opposite Redhill in Bournemouth, was an important north / south crossing point on the River Stour. The Dudsbury Iron Age hill fort and surrounding settlement in West Parley were connected to Winchester via the Moors River crossing at Palmers Ford, close to Tricketts Cross, and Wattons Ford over the River Avon and continuing on via Picket Post. There is also evidence that this track continued south over the meadows of the Stour via the Ford then went over higher ground at Ensbury Park and the current Boundary Lane to the sea at Alum Chine. In the Iron Age, the hill fort at Dudsbury and Double Dykes at Hengistbury were the main centres of settlement in the lower Stour Valley and the north / south track crossed an important track on the south side of the Stour valley that passed from Double Dykes through what is now Southbourne, Kings Park, Moordown and Wallisdown on an upland dry route to the current Bere Regis. The Stour valley was the most populous area locally and good farming land was surrounded by heathland for trees and grazing. There was active local and distant trade and movement between the Stour and the sea and it is thought that residents from Parley would be engaged in some sea fishing, as well as fishing in the Stour. There would also be quite a trade in salt, processed at Parkstone and on the edge of Poole Harbour, as it was an important commodity for preserving meat and fish. Crossing the river in Summer would have been relatively easy with the water level low and it is likely that one or two boats tied together would have spanned the river otherwise a boat would be rowed or punted across. This would have been sufficient for foot traffic and small loads.

However, as Poole developed and trade increased, the main route north-east went the more direct route further west via the new bridge at Longham from the late 1500s and when a bridge replaced the crossing at Ilford, Riddles Ford as a crossing point became less used. Locally produced milk and vegetables were transported from Parley to Bournemouth and residents would visit Bournemouth for work and pleasure whilst Victorian visitors to Bournemouth would take the tram to the depot at Moordown and go to Redhill and take the ferry crossing to Parley for a day out. The tea gardens at the ferry made a popular attraction for many years until the ferry stopped in the late 1940s. The Stour was straightened in the 1970s to speed up the flow of the river to keep it clear and the old course backfilled so there is no evidence of the original crossing. This river straightening means that there is a small part of West Parley on the south side of the Stour and the old Riddles Ford and current parish boundary are on the northern edge of the caravan park at Redhill. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Mike Bath feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Ferndown, West Parley and the surrounding area 0LNH LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW KLV approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth

is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just

goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mike a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Tigers get stitched up! The Tigers Freefall Parachute Display Team had a bit of a dilemma just before the start of the Bournemouth Air Show. Their new sponsors badges needed to be sewn onto their jumpsuits and they hadn’t got a needle and thread between them! Luckily Monika and Kat at Sew It Seams in West Parley, were happy to lend a hand! Although it was a bit of a rush, they are members of the Guild of Craftsmen so there was no doubt that their work would be up to scratch. Monika said “Sew It Seams is

always more than happy to support our Armed Forces.”

Lucy’s recipe corner Yummy banana bread

Get the oven on first so that it heats up to 350°F (175°C) and grease up or line a small oblong loaf tin.

INGREDIENTS

2 or 3 ripe, peeled bananas 1/3 cup of melted butter 1 beaten egg 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 1 teaspoon of baking soda A pinch of salt 1 ½ cups of all-purpose flour ½ a cup of sugar

Mash up the bananas in a mixing bowl and stir in the butter once smooth. Mix in the baking soda, salt, sugar, beaten egg and vanilla. Mix in the flour. Pour the mixture into your loaf tin and bake for around an hour. You can tell if it’s cooked by sliding a knife or skewer into the middle and if it comes out clean you’re done. Let the loaf cool on a rack and serve when slightly warm. Perfect with some custard!

Adventures of Nellie

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Poor Nellie was left on her own for a whole week! After spending a month camping, with the awning, Kombi as well as Rosie, Rocky and Mega the bikes, the Corney family with, can you believe it, the Outlaw family (alias my Mum and Dad) set off on the waves. Having written about our camping trip last month, I wasn’t going to do write up this month, but cruising is another adventure altogether and one I know many like to do. So yes the Corney’s and the Outlaw’s (boy did I used get some stick at school for that) took to the seas in celebration of my Dad’s 80th Birthday. We had booked the cruise at Christmas. Keeping an eleven year boy as well as an active 80 year old Dad, a 70 year Mum with some physical back and leg difficulties, myself and Stephen all happy at the same time was going to be a challenge! We chose a ship that was big enough and busy enough to have children’s activities, yet had an “adult only pool” just in case. We sailed on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Liner, the “Rhapsody of the Seas”. Stephen, I have to say was very well organised. I was convinced the valet parking at Heathrow airport had a catch to it, being the suspicious kind... but no, for a whole £56 the company came to collect the car 5 minutes after we arrived, leaving us with just luggage, passport, tickets and hat in hand, to stroll into the airport, while they took the car away for the week. Perfect!

Windmills on Mykonos

Corneys and Outlaws in the dining room We chose a cruise that sailed around the Greek Islands, from Rome. Staying one night in Rome before boarding, it was all very relaxing. The crew of these magnificent vessels are hard working, friendly and have one sole purpose - to keep their customers happy. It is great to see such a large team of people from all over the world working together in harmony. We can learn from this. The ship atmosphere is quite exhilarating. Once you set off and the wind is in your hair, the sun is shining (you can tell we were not in England this summer) all the problems and worries float away. Do forgive the pun. The first 36 hours were at sea, nothing but sea. There is plenty to do on board, although I have the say, in order to get a ‘pool lounger’ you need to be somewhat German (am I allowed to say that?) and get your towel out early! With 2365 people on board including over 800 Italians, 600 Spanish and many children, it is not for the faint hearted. The food is quite amazing and available pretty much 24/7 so don’t expect to lose weight. So long as you get the correct food and drink, this is all included in the cost. Another perk all included in the holiday price are the Shows at night. We were privileged enough to meet the chaps from “String Fever” who had flown

39 out especially from London. This is a family of musicians who had started their career travelling around England in their parent’s campervan! I couldn’t believe it...there is hope for us yet! The Greek Islands. Well I have to say I fell in love... with Santorini. The sail into the volcano with the mountainous terrain looming above you is awe inspiring. I would love to visit this island again. You get around 5-6 hours to look around before sailing off into the sunset again. We thoroughly enjoyed the cable car ride up to the top. It was possible to take a donkey, which would have been exciting and Dad would have given it a go, but it could have been fun watching Mum, or maybe not. We did the right thing. The walk up the volcanic cliffside once at the top is like nothing else. We had coffee at a delightful cafe overlooking the whole bay, away from the crowds, sheltered by a gorgeous tree. What more could you ask for. Mykonos is also a wonderful Greek Island. The narrow, white streets lined with jewellery, wonderfully made clothes and Greek ornaments I could have wondered around for hours. The beach was also good and the crystal turquoise sea is a must to sink into. At Katakolon, close to Mount Olympia where the Olympics originated, we found a beach with free parasols, loungers and canoes! All you had to do was buy a drink. Again this was perfect for everyone and Hayden was in his element, except when he found the jellyfish! Athens is a big city. Here we hired a taxi, as we missed the coach! It turned out to be to our

A birds eye view of Athens with Spiros advantage: the driver, Spiros, who didn’t speak much English, set off like a bat out of hell. We were worried! We blamed it on Greek driving and Mum clung on for dear life. It turned out that the changing of the guards happened every hour at the Parliament Building... Spiros got out and rushed us to get photos before the guards marched off. Once we understood what he was doing we were very appreciative! He also took us to see the city from ‘on high’ with the Acropolis in the background. Incredible. If you don’t want to wait and then take the many steps to climb up to the Acropolis, I highly recommend the museum. It is air-conditioned and actually holds the original parts of the Parthenon which are being repaired and replaced. We ended the cruise back in Rome with a bus trip around the whole city. Another amazing place. Nellie was sadly missed and is now fed up of looking at the photos, but we had a fantastic time. Cruising is fun! Where will Nellie go next…? Gardening Tips

on your

PLOT Herbs

Nature tends to dictate what we do in the garden and sometimes it’s just too late to plant those seeds, too early to prune that bush and incredibly you are already on top of the weeding. So what can you do to fulfil that urge to work the land? Why start a herb garden of course! Jobs for September:If you are growing pumpkins for Halloween, you need to support the fruit as it swells and raise it up to keep it off the wet ground and deter slugs. Restrict each plant to no more than three fruits. Clear up finished crops, clean and store any supports or netting for future use. Keep planting winter lettuces for a supply of fresh leaves right through autumn. Fancy fresh strawberries next year? Now is a good time to get new plants established. Add support to Brussels sprouts by drawing up earth around the stems, or using canes.

Most activity on your plot is tied to the seasons, but this month we take a look at one project that can be started off at almost any time of the year - your own herb garden. As we’ve taken to growing more and more of our own food so we have found ourselves getting increasingly interested in trying out new recipes to make the most of all those lovely fresh flavours. Recipe books abound in our kitchen and they all have one thing in common - the use of herbs, and what a variety of them there is! Whether you’re looking for a sprig of fresh mint, a handful of rosemary, or some chopped chives what could be better than being able to choose and harvest them right outside your own back door? Choosing the right site for your herb garden is important, and outside your back door is often a good place to start! Planting near the kitchen makes it easy to pop out for a few fresh leaves when you are cooking, and many of us have a patio which can easily become home to a variety of container grown herbs. Herbs can make an attractive, fragrant and tasty addition to your borders, or you may prefer to opt for a permanent herb bed. If this is the case you will need to give some consideration to containing the growth of some of the more vigorous varieties. This can be done by dividing the bed (a cartwheel design made with bricks is very attractive), or by using pots sunk into the ground.

Herbs comprise of both annual plants, that germinate, grow, flower and die within the year, and perennials that will grow on from one year to the next. Whatever you plant, you will need to find out which type it is and the conditions that it favours. The more hardy perennial types such as thyme, rosemary or mint may be happy outside all year round. One of the advantages of using containers is that tender varieties can be moved under cover during the worst of the winter and even tender annuals like basil can have their season extended by lifting plants to pot up and keep on the kitchen windowsill as autumn approaches. One of the great things about a herb garden is that it can be continually evolving. Look upon it as just the start of a collection, that will grow with time. Adding a new variety can be as simple as picking up a plant that takes your fancy on a trip out and adding a new pot to your collection. As well as using herbs fresh from the garden, you can dry leaves by hanging in bunches and then storing in an airtight container, or use ice cube trays to freeze chopped up leaves with a drop of water. Store the cubes in polythene bags, great for adding to a stew in the middle of winter!

100+ species in just one day It took just five hours for Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) staff and volunteers to identify over 100 wildlife species recently at Wimborne’s Knoll Gardens. From stag beetles to tree bees, hornet hoverflies to holly blue butterflies and dunnocks to buzzards, the survey revealed a thriving wildlife community of 103 species, an increase of nearly 30% since the garden’s first annual survey last year. The survey was part of a programme of research carried out on behalf of the Knoll Gardens Foundation. A charity that promotes responsible gardening, the Foundation believes that the simple act of creating beautiful outdoor spaces encourages us all to spend more time enjoying and experiencing the natural world. That enjoyment leads naturally to an appreciation of the wildlife that inevitably moves in to share our gardens with us. Nicky Hoar, Learning and Interpretation Officer at Dorset Wildlife Trust, said, “This survey not only improves our knowledge of wildlife in Dorset but also demonstrates how important gardens are for wildlife. We have been particularly impressed with the range of insect species found at Knoll

Southern hawker dragonfly Photo: K Wilkinson

Knoll Gardens’ owner, Neil Lucas and Katie Wilkinson from the DWT see what’s been sighted at a recent bioblitz in the gardens Gardens and many of our own gardens could be similar havens on a smaller scale. It demonstrates perfectly what we are working for in The Great Heath project, where gardens large and small, other open spaces and nature reserves combine to create a larger Living Landscape for wildlife to thrive alongside people.” Bob Sweet, Chairman of the Knoll Gardens Foundation said, “I am delighted so many DWT experts and volunteers could give up their valuable time to help with this important species count and equally delighted by their findings. We value this survey as a kind of annual health check and whilst this year’s impressive results could be due to exceptional weather or a particularly talented group of volunteers, it is gratifying to know that we have a thriving wildlife community in the garden, and a real endorsement of Knoll’s renowned naturalistic gardening style”. Knoll Gardens opens from Tuesday – Saturday, 10am – 4pm and is brown signed from all major routes into Wimborne.
