Dear Ferndown & West Parley residents, The children are well Edition 138 and truly back at school and in fact half term is already upon us. How time flies! Nellie has had a very busy time driving us all over the place. She is now resting in the garden Debbie & Stephen Corney before more adventures with our son Hayden this autumn. Nellie believes that keeping a young at heart spirit helps all those aches, pains and worries disappear. Marathon Effort for the JTYAF An amazing team of 22 supporters completed an epic ‘Marathon Effort’ to raise funds for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF). Joe Barnett, JTYAF Trustee, organised the walk which started at Sandbanks and finished 26 miles along the coast path, in Lymington. Although they headed off in glorious sunshine they battled wind and torrential rain at times, many picking up injuries too. They all accomplished what they had set out to do, showing great courage, determination and plenty of cheerfulness in adversity reflecting the true spirit of the charity. Pete Thornton, Charity Chairman, commented, “We can’t thank Joe and his team enough for taking part in this fantastic event. Thanks, must also go to all the friends and family who have supported them so generously. They

Talking about Wildlife...
Every Child Wild It’s a common topic of conversation: are we spending too much time inside with technology, rather than getting out into our natural environment? Young or old, we all spend time in front of screens, for work and pleasure, but many of us do remember playing outside when we were young. However, there are some statistics that suggest children aren’t spending as much time with nature as perhaps their parents did. In a recent survey by England’s largest outdoor learning project, Natural Connections, it was found that only 8% of school age children in England get out of their classrooms and into green spaces. 92% of schools said spending time with nature improves pupils’ health and wellbeing, and engages them with learning. In a You Gov study it was found that 78% of parents are concerned that children don’t spend though time interacting with nature and wildlife. So, Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) has decided to do something to address this disconnection with nature. We want to give thousands of children in Dorset a safe place to learn, laugh, watch or simply relax, surrounded by nature – all the things that many of us took for granted when we were young. It’s called the WildHub, at DWT’s Kingcombe Centre in West Dorset, surrounded with 180 hectares of the Kingcombe Meadows Nature Reserve. The WildHub will have three main elements. An innovative outdoor classroom, complete with benches and a wooden chest full of wild activities such as books and activity sheets, a new wildlife exploration zone and play area for families, and a new pavilion
boardwalk that runs down to the river Hooke – the perfect way to explore this wonderful place. All of these elements to ‘wild play’ will provide a safe, immersive environment to give children the confidence to explore the countryside and wildlife around them. Technology is a wonderful thing, and can support a child’s understanding of the world, but we want them to experience wildlife and nature in real life, rather than just watching it on TV. Dorset Film Premiere Raises Over £8,000 For Local Sight Loss Charity On Monday 11th September the red carpet was rolled out at The Regent Centre in Christchurch for the Dorset Premiere of the film Victoria and Abdul. This exclusive event was in aid of Dorset Blind Association and was kindly sponsored by Blue Sky Financial Planning. It welcomed a sell out audience of over 300 people and raised a staggering £8,336.00! The film, starring Dame Judi Dench, is directed by the charitys patron and BAFTA award winner, Stephen Frears. Frears kindly supports the sight loss charity as his son and blind actor, Sam Frears, has benefited from the charitys services for many years attending their social clubs and activities. On release of his last film in 2016, Florence Foster Jenkins, he gave Dorset Blind Association the opportunity to also host their first Dorset Premiere in Bournemouth at The ABC Odeon. Victoria and Abdul follows the unlikely friendship between Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) and her Indian servant Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal). As their friendship deepens, the queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes, joyfully reclaiming her humanity. The film also
stars Eddie Izzard, Tim Pigott-Smith and Adeel Akhtar. Helena Sinclair, Events fundraiser from Dorset Blind Association said, ‘We are incredibly overwhelmed by the support we received at our Dorset Film Premiere of Victoria and Abdul. The funds raised for Dorset Blind Association are just phenomenal and will have such a huge impact to our services in the local community. The Lewins of Wimborne & a Lord Mayor of London In October 1919 the Wimborne Minster Parish Magazine referred to a copy of an inscription provided by the local doctor and historian Dr Le Fleming. It was from a monument to Sir William Lewin in Ewell Church in Surrey. It records that he was the son of Robert Lewin of Wimborne. Sir William, it states, held a number of posts in the City of London and in 1717 was chosen as Lord Mayor of London. He performed his duties ‘with integrity and reputation’. His wife, Dame Susannah Lewin, who died on 30 December 1737, is also mentioned on the monument. The writer had undertaken further research and discovered that Sir William had previously served as Senior Sheriff of London in 1712. A. Lindsay Clegg’s ‘A History of Wimborne Minster and District’ mentions a Robert Lewen who built the
house known as Lewens in the town in 1654. He had been Wine Steward to Charles II and was a Churchwarden. A. Lindsay Clegg adds that two Lewen sisters, Amy and Ann, are listed in the records of the church court as recusants. Anyone named as a recusant in the 16th and 17th centuries had refused to attend Church of England services.

National Lottery grant launches new Rotary maritime project The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has just announced it has awarded £9,900 of National Lottery Funding for an innovative new project by the Rotary Club of Poole Bay. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery Players, the project will add a new dimension to the interpretation of Poole’s fascinating maritime history. “Pirates, Castaways and Codfish” is based on the lives of three influential figures who helped shape the town’s development in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, The project will tell their stories which include: privateering, piracy, smuggling, codfish, colonial settlement, merchant venturing, international trade, war and maritime security, all of which influenced the successful development of the port of Poole. This new initiative grew out of the original survey undertaken by Poole Bay Rotary to map and record the old alleys of Poole, in order to protect them for future generations. During this, the Club discovered possible links between three of the alleys and important historical figures in the town’s development: Admiral Sir Thomas Button, Captain John Bennett and Governor Woodes Rogers. During the 11 months of this new project a variety of volunteers and local organisations will be playing their part, including members of the Rotary Club, Poole Museum staff, students from Bournemouth University, together with staff and students from local schools. By the end of the project, the Club will have produced new exhibition materials for Poole Museum, a heritage booklet
and self-guided walk, CD/audio visual display together with a range of educational resource materials for use by schools. The Rotary Club of Poole Bay has been working in and for the local community on a wide variety of projects over the last 33 years. It has raised over £15,000 per year, with members contributing thousands of hours of voluntary service. This new project will build on the established Rotary ‘Five Quays Walk’ developed in 2011. Don Nutt, the project manager for Poole Bay Rotary commented: “There has already been tremendous interest from local groups to help us tell this story about the development of Poole as an international trading port. We are looking forward to making this new information easily available in a variety of different forms through this project”. ‘Outstanding’ Hospital Orchard Garden wins Gold at South & South East in Bloom Awards The therapeutic Orchard Garden at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital was heralded as ‘outstanding’ by judges after it received a Gold award at today’s South & South East in Bloom 2017 awards ceremony. The Orchard Garden – funded by donations to Bournemouth Hospital Charity – was awarded the highest honour of a Gold award at the annual ceremony in Gatwick after it had been nominated for the awards by the Bournemouth in Bloom organisation. South & South East in Bloom judge Ruth Growney, who visited the Royal Bournemouth Hospital to evaluate the Orchard Garden in July, said it was ‘incredibly rare’ for a first time entrant to receive a Gold award. “I am thrilled to award Gold to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital’s Orchard Garden,” said Ruth. “The Orchard Garden is an outstanding example that is made even more extraordinary as it is a first time entry. It’s incredibly rare for this to happen, but so well deserved.” Haematology Consultant Dr Helen McCarthy, who originally envisioned the concept of the Orchard Garden project, says she is delighted that the garden has received a Gold award. “I strongly believe in the healing power of gardens and I’m grateful to those who supported my vision of creating this small oasis in the grounds of a hospital,” said Dr McCarthy.
“I would like to thank all of our patients, their families and our staff for their passion in fundraising to make this possible. Much emotion has been invested in this lovely garden for cancer patients to enjoy.” The Orchard Garden has transformed the previously unused and unattractive courtyard in between the Hospital’s Jigsaw Building and Pathology Department into a tranquil area of relaxation and beauty for patients, visitors and staff to enjoy. The area now features a therapeutic courtyard garden linked by a sensory orchard walkway to the hospital lake, where a fully accessible wooden deck offers an area of peaceful retreat overlooking the water. The Orchard Garden was significantly supported by Dorset Cancer Care Foundation – who administered a legacy from the late Betty Hyams – as well as the Tesco ‘Bags of Help’ programme that contributed £12,000 after local Tesco shoppers voted to back the project at the checkouts. Touchingly, over £35,000 of the total was donated in-memory of former patients who were never able to enjoy the benefits of the Orchard Garden but who received treatment during its construction.

Jon Egging memorial moved to new location The Jon Egging Trust (JET), was set up in memory of Red Arrows pilot Jon Egging, Red 4, who tragically lost his life on 20th August 2011 whilst completing a display at the Bournemouth Air Festival. The charity realises his dream of helping young people overcome adversity, identify their strengths and work towards their ambitions. The Trust delivers two key youth engagement programmes, Blue Skies and Inspirational Outreach, in conjunction with their partners. It operates in 15 counties, across 6 JET regions. Blue Skies concentrates on raising confidence and aspirations in young people who face significant barriers to reaching their full potential. 228 young people graduated on Blue Skies programmes in the last academic year across the country. Inspirational Outreach was launched in 2014 to reach more young people by offering bespoke support packages to schools based on their needs. Sessions include talks, assemblies, lessons and visits that connect young people to inspirational mentors such as the Red Arrows, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, injured service personnel and veterans, as well as individuals connected to aviation, engineering and science. Around 10,000 young people have participated in sessions since the launch. In the South West Blue Skies is run in conjunction with personnel from QinetiQ, MOD Boscombe Down, The Empire Test Pilots’ School, Southampton University Air Squadron, Defence Infrastructure Organisation, Wessex Archaeology, Farrow and Ball, The National Trust, Winchester University, the Tank Museum and Cobham Aviation Services. I was adamant that everything that Jon stood for should continue, and so with the help of our partners and 500 inspirational volunteers, the Jon Egging Trust provides support and mentorship to young people facing challenges in their lives. I’m immensely proud, and know Jon would be too, of the fact that in 2012 we started by helping 8 young people in Lincolnshire, and since then we have supported 10000, and expanded into 15 counties. Following a huge UK sold out tour this year, Britain’s Got Talent winners Collabro bring their third nationwide tour to Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts on 27 October. Wimborne Wins Gold Medal for the Fourth Year in Succession and the Town Title in the Regional In Bloom Competition The Regional South and South East in Bloom Awards Ceremony took place at the Copthorne Hotel Effingham Gatwick last month and for the fourth year in succession the Town of Wimborne Minster won a Gold Award. However on account of the increase in the Town’s population we had moved from the Small Town Category to the Town Category and at the first attempt won the Category title.
Speaking after the Ceremony a delighted Richard Nunn, Chairman of Wimborne in Bloom said “Not only were we in a new category but we won it at the first attempt and he thanked all who have helped us to achieve this magnificent result in this special year when we
are celebrating our 25th anniversary. It justly reflects on the hard work put in by many, both committee, members and supporters and also it wouldn’t have been possible without the superb public support which is given for our events”. The Judges in their comments said, “On a very hot day, Wimborne pulled out all the stops to show them how proud they were in their Town.” In addition the Redcotts Recreation Ground won a Silver Gilt Award and Anthony Oliver, the former Chairman and founder of the group 25 years ago was awarded one of the Regions Outstanding Contribution Awards for 2017 for all that he has done in the name of ‘In Bloom’ over the past 25 years.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Nellie has had the time of life recently travelling all over England, quite literally. In the last two months she has taken us camping at Norden Farm near Corfe Castle with my parents, then she took us to Cornwall, Holywell Bay to be precise, for a surf life-saving competition, then to Hull for a family wedding and finally to the Centenary Caravan and Camping Club in the New Forest with Stephen’s Dad and sister! What fun. Well mostly… The drive to Cornwall is one of Nellie’s favourites. Once on the road to Dorchester and beyond she knows she is on holiday. The coast road from Bridport is pretty stunning with expansive views of the sea and rolling English countryside. We always stop at Charmouth to have a cuppa and gaze into

Nellie with her new pal Movelite the glistening blue depths, knowing we can “forget all about it” for just a little while. For a whole week we can leave any troubles and worries behind. Bliss. Nellie’s engine was purring. Sometime later with singing at its height, we arrived at the Caravan and Camping Club site at Treamble Valley. Unpacking all our ‘stuff’ we realised we had made the big mistake of putting the Kombi Ex awning away while it was damp… and we hadn’t dried it out. Yes, big mistake. The awning was musty and not in good condition. Then the rains started and it just did not stop. Heavy, constant rain. I woke up wet through on the left side! Deciding the best thing was to take refuge in good old Nellie, I knew I needed to check Hayden to see if he was dry. He woke up to his ‘weird’ mother patting his sleeping bag, wondering why I was checking his legs were ok!? I had to see the funny side of that. Fortunately, Hayden was totally dry. So now we had a musty, damp awning with a week to go. Hayden had a competition coming up and there was no way that Nellie was going to chance more sleepless night as the weather forecast was not looking at all good. Off to Newquay it was then. A new ‘blow up’ awning later, another full day packing and

39 unpacking, and we were once again all set. A rather exhausting start to a blissful week away. Do you ever wonder why we do this to ourselves? It did remind me of “Carry on Camping” only I don’t have quite the same laugh as Barbara Windsor. I am missing a couple of other characteristics too… Holywell Bay park was fun. Nellie wanted to join in the go-karts and I am sure she would have won, but sadly she was disqualified at the starting block. The foot golf was almost impossible and we did laugh. I kept telling the boys I had won until I owned up to picking up the ball at one point and throwing it through the gap, instead of kicking it. Oh well. Nellie really liked Padstow. The quay there is atmospheric with all the little stalls, street sellers braiding girl’s hair, boats and ice creams. A real sea-side treat. The sea in Cornwall is much more active than here in Dorset and Hampshire. The waves pound onto the sand with white fighting sea horses that hurl towards you. I can see why many beaches have RNLI experts at the ready, watching you. The National Surf Life Saving Competition was held on Holywell Bay. The event is so exiting with teams from all over the country. Some of these competitors surf six days a week, including the winter months. Hayden is part of the Youth Team, Branksome Chine, and they did really well but not as well as the Branksome Masters had done the previous two days! It is no mean
Much more relaxing end to the holidays...
Battling against the ocean waves feat swimming against the tide over crashing waves on a small board around the buoys and back again to run on the beach to the finish line. I take my hat off to them, or should I say my ‘dry robe’? Nellie was suitably impressed with them all. Once this was all over Nellie had to drive us all the way to Hull to my cousin’s wedding! Nellie was packed with wellies, wet suits and surf boards, next to wedding dresses, satin shoes and a fascinator. Hilarious and only us Brits could do this. As I have said Nellie is a fun loving girl who adapts to many situations and is always ready for an adventure. Life is for living to the full and Nellie smiles her way through it. The wedding was a great success and it was wonderful to catch up with everyone. We managed to keep Nellie off the booze. After all she was doing the driving! We were home for just one week when Nellie set off again and took us to the New Forest Centenary Club to meet Stephen’s Dad and sister. This was much more relaxing with wonderful sunshine and a fantastic end to our summer exploits. The gorgeous bright yellow Jessie Phyllis (named after her two grandmothers) was there. This is Nellie’s retro style VW friend who belongs to Stephen’s sister and both she and Nellie sunbathed to their hearts content dreaming about what they would do next summer. Bournemouth Hallmark Hotels Provide Cancer Patients With Complimentary Cream Teas Bournemouth’s three Hallmark Hotels have been donating complimentary cream teas to chemotherapy patients at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital As part of their commitment to the local community, Hallmark Hotels Bournemouth have been working with Bournemouth Hospital Charity to provide complimentary cream teas to inspirational cancer patients who are currently undergoing or have recently completed chemotherapy treatments. The charitable project began with a meeting between the Bournemouth Hallmark Hotel Cluster General Manager, Paul Clarke and the Senior Corporate Fundraiser at Bournemouth Hospital Charity, Maria Tidy. After hearing some incredibly moving and inspirational stories, Paul was keen that three Hallmark hotels should find a way to support chemotherapy patients at Bournemouth Hospital. Providing an opportunity to escape with family or friends, Paul and the Bournemouth Hallmark Hotels team have now given out over 40 cream tea vouchers to Bournemouth Hospital Charity. The vouchers are valid for a free cream tea at either the Bournemouth Hallmark East Cliff, Carlton, or West Cliff Hotels. Paul Clarke said: “After meeting representatives from the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and hearing some truly inspirational stories, we wanted to reward strong individuals who are undergoing chemotherapy treatments or overcoming cancer. The cream tea vouchers are intended to give these individuals the relaxation break they deserve.”
Maria Tidy said: “We are very grateful for the Hallmark Hotels cream tea donations. We know that they’ll be greatly appreciated by many of our patients who are currently undergoing chemotherapy. I would like to thank Paul and the Hallmark team for bringing a smile to all our faces.” The Bournemouth Hospital Charity was created to enhance the care and treatment at the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospital. All the funds they raise through donations, gifts and events are destined to provide additional facilities and new equipment for both staff and patients. Making sites more accessible across Dorset and the South West The South West is full of wonderful heritage places to explore, from caves to historic houses and sweeping landscapes. According to the Papworth Trust, disabled adults in the North and South West report the highest number of life areas (education and leisure) where participation is restricted. Despite the efforts of museums, galleries and other leisure attractions, feedback from disabled and Deaf people suggests there is more that can be done to make these places more accessible. The Heritage Ability project, delivered by charity Living Options Devon and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund has a clear vision - to break down barriers at these heritage places, unlocking the South West for everybody to enjoy. Over the next three years, the Heritage Ability team will support a variety of unique places across the South West to help them improve the experience for disabled and Deaf visitors. From the West tip of Cornwall all the way to Gloucestershire, the team will work with over 19 sites to deliver accessible interpretation, from BSL (British Sign Language) clips, to visual stories and easy read documents. Many sites will also benefit from an all-terrain scooter or ‘Tramper’, which will enable people with limited mobility to access the countryside like never before.
Four heritage places are taking part in Dorset. These are Moors Valley Country Park, Lulworth Cove, Durlston Country Park and RSPB Arne. As part of the project, Heritage Ability are looking for disabled and Deaf volunteers with a passion for heritage to help spread the word, become advocates for the project and help their sites on their ongoing journey. They also need your help to conduct some mystery visits at the sites and provide feedback which the team can use to help the sites improve. Local Assistance Dog Charity Needs Help To Expand Verwood based Assistance Dog charity “Woofability” is appealing for more volunteers to help train their puppies and dogs as demand increases for their services. Chief Executive Andy Clarke says “We help children and adults with a wide range of disabilities including children with Autism or Down’s Syndrome. The effect a dog can have is truly remarkable and we are always inspired by seeing the results of our work.” Emma, Maxwell and Buddy Emma is 9 and has Autism, severe anxiety and has 40 epileptic absences each day. She has great difficulty in leaving the security of her own home and does not attend school because of her anxiety. We visited her with our Golden Retriever “Maxwell” who is particularly calm and ideally suited to support Emma. During our first visit, we took Emma to her local Asda Superstore which she had been unable to visit for several years and her father was amazed at how she coped for 25 minutes with no adverse reaction. The following day Maxwell visited school with Emma for just half an hour when all of the teachers came to see her and then went to Costa Coffee and McDonalds where she had never been able to go previously. Emma’s parents still cannot believe the difference in Emma’s ability to cope with the outside world and she hasn’t had any epileptic absences, her school arranged for Emma to restart her mainstream education and to take Maxwell with her to the delight of her teachers and fellow students. After three months the family went on holiday for the first time in years as Emma, her parents and younger sister are able to embark on a more “normal” lifestyle.

On Your Plot Benefits of Garlic
Time spent on clearing and preparing your beds now will pay dividends next year. Make the most of the autumn sunshine to get compost dug into bare beds and you’ll have saved yourself hours of work on those chilly Spring days.
Jobs for October :-
• Make sure that plenty of sun can get to your pumpkins in order to get them ripe in time for Halloween. • Plant garlic, shallots and Japanese onions. • Leaving dead seed heads etc. on your flower borders will provide valuable food and shelter for garden wildlife over winter, as will leaving an undisturbed log or two. Build a rough shelter in a quiet corner and you might get a hedgehog move in! • If you get lots of fallen leaves on your plot don’t waste them. Make a bin from chicken wire attached to 4 posts. Fill this with the leaves and they will rot down to give you sweet-smelling black leaf mould in one to two years tim.
As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler the focus on your vegetable plot starts to turn from growing and harvesting, into clearing and tidying. October is a good month for taking stock of how things have gone this year and starting to make plans for what you will grow in the future. Removing spent crops exposes slugs and other such pests to birds and other garden friendly wildlife. It also gives you the chance to look after your soil and assess how the space will be used next. Crop rotation is important so if the space is to remain bare over winter it may be wise to make notes about what grew where this season. Add matter from your compost heap to newly cleared areas, either digging it in, or leaving a layer on the top where the worms will gradually incorporate it into the deeper soil over winter. If the soil is heavy leaving it bare will enable frosts to help break it up. Our soil is lighter and benefits from being covered over - we use flattened cardboard boxes which protect from the rain (and we’ve all had enough of that lately!), and
also help keep the weeds at bay. You may think that it’s all too late in the year to be planting, but there are some crops that definitely need to be thought of now, and others that, given an early start now, will benefit next Spring. If you’ve not grown garlic before, then do try it - it’s easy to grow, can help protect other crops from pests, and with just a small amount of space you can grow enough to see you through the whole year! Now is definitely the time to order your garlic bulbs and they can be planted anytime between now and Christmas, but preferably not when the soil is too wet. Rather than planting all the garlic together it may pay to spread it around the plot as the strong smell can be an aid in keeping pests such as the carrot root fly away from other crops. Each garlic bulb should be separated into individual cloves and the cloves are planted with the pointed end uppermost, just below the surface, leaving about 4 inches between each one. They like well drained soil and you’ll be pleasantly surprised in the long winter days to see their green tips creeping upwards. Each clove matures into a whole new bulb. The traditional time for harvesting garlic is in June, on the longest day of the year and if properly dried and stored it will keep right through the winter. Would you like some fresh, tender, young, peas early in the Spring next year? Look out for hardy varieties that can be planted now. They can be overwintered and are able to withstand the frosts, though protection with a cloche will be appreciated. We will be starting ours in pots to keep in the polytunnel over winter ready for early planting next season.

“It’s not a place where travellers first think of staying,” smiles Shige Takezoe, who with his wife Diana, owns Hell Barn Cottages in North Chideock. “There are various stories about how this part of Chideock got its name. Some say Greeks came here and built a temple called Hellas but this is disputed by local historians who say the Greeks only got as far as Devon. Others believe that Christians visited on a pilgrimage and made their home here. Then of course there was the Black Death where corpses were buried in the tumuli. Basically nobody knows why it is called Hell but it’s a beautiful place,” says Shige, who purchased the holiday business with its three cottages in 1996. “It’s very much an international business with 20 per cent of holidaymakers coming from abroad as far away as India and many French and Germans regularly staying. It’s only a 12-hour drive from Munich.” I have driven through Chideock on the way to Devon many times and never really given it a second glance. Until now. And it is a beautiful revelation. A typical village with narrow country lanes that at times are so narrow it is scary especially when driving a large Range Rover Evoque, which seems to create its own lay-bys. What brings a Japanese man to this remote part of Dorset? “Diana was an English teacher in Tokyo and we moved back to the UK. I haven’t visited Japan since but my sister sends her children over every now and then.” Shige taught Japanese at the University of London and then relocated to Newcastle where he worked for a Japanese company. “I turned their loss making office into a profitable one. It’s only at that point when you’re making money that you have the luxury to reflect on what you are doing. Realising that I wanted a better quality of life we moved to Dorset and found Hell. We’ve never looked back.”
It’s such an idyllic location where there is an almost continual happy bird song; it’s as if you’re living in an aviary. There’s no road noise and children are well catered for because not only is there a large garden to run around there is a slide and swings, which Harriett and Heidi thoroughly enjoy. There’s also an enormous games room where we visit each morning. The children love playing in the Wendy house,and we even manage to play poll and ping pong. We stay in Rosemary Cottage, which has two bedrooms and a downstairs bathroom. Most importantly of all, the beds are extremely comfortable providing a good night’s sleep. But it is only on this holiday that my wife, Caroline realises that my snoring has been disturbing her sleep for the past three years. That’s a tough day for me but I resolve to visit a pharmacist and find some anti-snoring strips, which help. Shige cooks Japanese cuisine and delivers it to the cottages. He’ll even take away the plates so there’s no washing up. This is great because it enables tired parents to enjoy the restaurant experience at home without worrying about the children disrupting fellow diners. “I also cater for diners in my home and sometimes they end up holidaying in one of my cottages,” says Shige. We try the salmon and chicken teriyaki, which comes with rice, miso soup and salad with Japanese dressing. Until now I hadn’t eaten seaweed but it was surprisingly tasty in the miso soup. Put your feet... in good hands! Having been the podiatrist on board the Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise liner and also having worked within the NHS in a variety of roles specialising in diabetes high risk clinics, biomechanical clinics and specialised nail surgery clinics, Catherine Ranger brings a wealth of experience to Ferndown. Volvo V90 R-Design By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk Volvo estates have come a long way since their ‘wardrobe on wheels’ image. We all knew they were safe and comfortable; they just weren’t sexy. That all changed some years ago, and the last V70 looked great; perhaps even better than its saloon sibling, the S80. Then in 2016, the V90 and the booted S90 came along; two stunning cars with more than a hint of sporting appeal woven into the luxury, ride comfort and space that Volvos always offer. The models have been a success in the short time they’ve been out – but the V90 is the one that most people favour. As an estate car, it’s more practical, even though the Swedish car maker has made the load area slightly smaller than the previous V70’s. For those who like versatility and don’t want the ‘conservative’ estate car image, Volvo has recently put its R-Design stamp on the V90. This means you can still drive an estate car, but one that looks hunkered down and stimulating. Yes, stimulating – who’d have thought a Volvo could have that effect? The R-Design flavour has always given Volvos that extra something – it’s made the cars spicier to look at and hotter in the way they handle. The V90 R-Design is a genuine looker – a great piece of artwork all round. Its kerbside appeal is boosted even further, thanks to its 15mm lowered ride height, silver door mirrors, gloss black grille and flashy 18-inch alloy wheels. The jazziness continues inside, with semi-electrically operated leather and nubuck sports seats. There are also metal-effect inlays, a vivid LED driver’s display, sports pedals, and illuminated tread plates.
My test car was fitted with the D4 engine, hooked up to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The D4 is a 2.0litre turbo diesel unit delivering 190PS - a well-judged output for regular commuting. It’s quick enough for most palates, reaching 62mph in 8.5 seconds, but it is prudent, too. If you see over 60mpg from this engine, I wouldn’t be taken aback. The V90 is refreshing compared with its rear-wheel drive German equals. It’s driven by its front wheels, and is nimbler to wield. The Volvo feels sprightlier, thanks to the weight of the pedals and steering and while this is no small vehicle, it feels far from overwhelming, due to how acquiescent it is. Because of the R-Design’s lowered, firmer suspension set-up, the V90 R-Design will corner quickly without perceptible body lean. However, the drawback is that there’s no option to alter the suspension on the fly. Mind you, air suspension can be substituted when you buy the car new, although it will cost you £1,500 for the privilege. On the regular non-R-Design V90s you’re offered a more cushioned ride. But if you’re determined to go for a sporty estate, and don’t mind a lower, firmer system, then the stock V90 R-Design is an excellent choice.
