Dear Ferndown & West Parley! Well it has been all go in our house with Hayden settled into his new middle school in Ferndown. We are back to swimming lessons, brass band practice and homework! All good fun and often a challenge, fitting everything in. Hayden is a pretty keen swimmer, swimming for the Swim Bournemouth Club which does mean some early mornings – starting at 5.45am on a Friday and 7am on a Saturday… That is early for me! I do take my hat off to those parents who have really sacrificed a lot to help their children become great sports people. It takes quite some dedication by the whole family. I don’t think Hayden will make the Olympics, but it is a great sport and one Stephen and I are happy to support him in. It gets him away from the computer for a while, which can also be a challenge… We have had a good month putting the magazine together for you. There are some new advertisers for you to see. Do take a look and see who may be able to help you, and of course tell them that you got their details from The Ferndown & West Parley Directory. This is the 92nd edition and I still love to hear that the local trades and businesses are getting calls and bookings from us! Lottie’s Afternoon Tea for the JTYAF Lottie Gilbert recently organised an Afternoon Tea at her home in Ferndown, raising £600 for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation and Help for Heroes. The sandwiches, scones and cakes were delicious, all served on beautiful traditional china, but the star attraction was a stunning silver Porsche which was parked on Lottie’s drive. The Porsche Centre Ferndown sponsored the event and very kindly offered the chance to drive a Porsche for the day as a raffle prize! Well as you can imagine the tension was high as the winning ticket was pulled and our congratulations go to Chris Rimmer the lucky winner. The JTYAF would like to thank Lottie and her family and friends for organising this fabulous event and a big thank you to the Porsche Centre Ferndown for their brilliant support.

Focus on Francis Poole, the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals provide respected and highly regarded NHS care to hundreds of thousands of patients in east Dorset every year. In national assessments and reports, these hospitals consistently perform at a high level against a range of key standards and quality indicators. Comprehensive surveys of patient views also paint a positive picture of how hospital care is viewed by those who receive it. Achieving these high standards requires a continued commitment to quality from the board of directors to the wards, and a sharp focus on providing truly patientcentred care. The tragic consequences of losing sight of these basic objectives were highlighted earlier this year in a damning report which examined the causes of substandard care provided by Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust. The Francis Report, published in February, marked the culmination of a year-long public inquiry into the systemic failings at that trust, and sent reverberations throughout the NHS and further afield. At the heart of the report, its author, Robert Francis QC, called for a re-emphasis on ensuring the needs of patients come first. So how did hospitals in east Dorset respond to this report? At Poole, the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals, it provided an opportunity to re-evaluate the fundamentals of how quality care is delivered and whether genuine emphasis was placed on each and every patient and their individual needs. In short, were they getting the basics right? The report’s 290 recommendations were reviewed in detail as a matter of urgency in order to provide assurance that the failures identified at Mid Staffs could not be repeated here. Each hospital also held a series of listening events, providing an opportunity for more than 300 staff working in a wide range of roles to discuss the Francis Report with members of both trust’s management boards. In addition, patient and public involvement groups were
asked to give their views on the report and the care offered at their local hospitals. Understanding individual patient experiences and where care exceeds or falls short of expectations is vital, says Martin Smits, Director of Nursing and Patient Services at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. “It is all too easy in the wake of the terrible stories which emerged from Mid Staffs to forget the excellent work taking place in the NHS,” said Martin. “Locally, we know from national surveys that our patients rate both our hospitals highly, which is a huge encouragement to us and spurs us on to deliver even better care and service. “What I believe is essential is peering underneath these headlines, to look at the factors that make an individual patient’s experience in hospital good, and where it could have been improved. “We can only do that by listening to patients and our staff.” Paula Shobbrook, Director of Nursing at The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, agrees. “No one knows more about what is happening at the forefront of patient care than those responsible for delivering it and those receiving it,” said Paula. “These experiences and viewpoints - good and bad - are essential in order for us, as board members, to know how we are doing. “Trust boards receive a vast amount of information on quality and performance. Coupling this with the views of staff, as we have done through our post-Francis Report listening events, and the experiences of our patients, provides invaluable insight. “Our ‘putting patients first’ commitment is just that - it’s a highly visible declaration that our aim is to ensure that at all times our focus remains on our patients and nothing else.” Martin cites Poole Hospital’s longstanding commitment to patients - the Poole Approach – as a key factor in ensuring standards at his hospital remain consistently high. “The Poole Approach may have been introduced more than a decade ago, but its central tenet has never been more true - ‘patient centred care with dignity and respect for all’,” he said. Whichever way this commitment to the needs of patients is packaged, both Martin and Paula are in complete agreement on one issue - when it comes to high quality care, complacency is simply not an option. It’s Panto Time once again! Oh no it isn’t... Oh yes it is!! With just over 10 weeks to go, BH Live is already getting in the Panto spirit! Glitter, glitz and glam were in abundance at The Terrace Bistro - Bournemouth Pavilion as guests flocked to celebrate the launch of Aladdin – The Pavilion Pantomime, sponsored by Aruba Restaurant and Bar. I was lucky enough to be able to catch up with Chris Jarvis and ask him a few questions... Having been born in Romford, Essex, what was it that drew you to make Bournemouth your home? It was actually pantomime... In 2002, we did Cinderella in Bournemouth with Ruth Madoc. I loved the people and the atmosphere. With family close by it was a seaside resort that we had also visited a lot. With appearances at Butlins early in your career, had you always wanted to be in entertainment as a child? Yes. I used to do impersonations a lot and try to make people laugh. I think it helped a little to not get bullied so much when other kids found it funny. What was your “big break” to get into presenting? I was doing a voice on the radio called “The Anorak” and got invited into the Broom Cupboard on CBBC. From there it led into other programmes. Did you go to drama school? No. There are two main routes into the entertainment business. One is drama school and the other is variety. I was lucky enough to do the latter through experience at holiday camps and other

Being able to do pretty much anything and generally being able to entertain audiences of any age. Also the ability, particularly here to make it very relevant for local people. Who would you most like to star in panto with? I think that Kelsey Grammer from Frasier would make an excellent pantomime villain! Some Facts about Bats Revered and feared, but rarely understood, bats have left few cultures indifferent during their millions of years of existence on earth. With their unusual anatomy – they are the only true flying mammals – silent flight and mythical reputation, bats have inspired many a folk story across the globe. In Britain, there are 17 species of breeding bats of which the pipistrelles, the brown long-eared bat, the noctule and Daubenton’s bat are the most common. All British bats restrict their diet to insects only, devouring up to 3000 insects a night, from midges and moths to mosquitoes and beetles. Their massive appetites are necessary to sustain energy for their nocturnal adventures. Although bats are far from blind, they do not rely on their eyes for hunting but locate their prey using a sophisticated system known as echolocation. Bats often live in close quarters to humans, but can be hard to observe, since the sounds that they make are too high pitched for the human ear. They don’t build nests but roost in a variety of habitats, from hollow trees and caves to houses and churches, even tunnels. They often use different locations at different times of year, depending on their roosting needs. Female bats produce only one pup a year, around June. As winter approaches, bats get
ready to hibernate, and in the colder months, you may find yourself co-habiting with a bat that has chosen your loft for its winter retreat. Please remember all bats are legally protected and must not be disturbed. If you find an injured bat or need any other help with bats, ring the bat helpline on 0845 1300 228. THIS MOTOR is more budget than bling; but that in itself is no problem. The new hatchback from ŠKODA has space for five-up and, in 1.6 TDI guise, can extract up to 64.2mpg out of a tank. Also, with emissions of just 114g/km, the car is cost-effective to run as a company vehicle. When it comes to thrills and spills the ŠKODA Rapid isn’t really quite as speedy as its name suggests. The oil-burner under the bonnet of the Czech-made motor powers it from rest to 62mph in 10.6 seconds and upwards to 118mph. It’s fairly slow going, and with only five gears it’s annoyingly easy to crunch the gearstick up into a non-existent sixth cog. As well as the less than prompt performance the Rapid feels skittish at motorway speeds and the steering is too light to inspire confidence. The plastic trim is disappointing compared with, say, the more executivefocused ŠKODA Superb but, in its favour the flagship ‘Elegance’ grade, on test here, does come stacked with kit. Key features include cruise control; electrically heated door mirrors, multi-function steering wheel controls, Bluetooth and air conditioning. It’s easy to get comfortable behind the wheel
too; the height adjustable seating and adaptable reach/rake steering column makes this possible. If you opt for the Elegance model you’ll also benefit from 16-inch alloys, cornering front fog lamps, rear electric windows, and chrome interior detailing. But no matter which variant of the Rapid you drive, you’ll find access to the boot easy and the load space square and practical in this, the seventh car in ŠKODA’s award-winning range. Crucially, With Benefit in Kind (BIK) ratings from only 14 percent, the ŠKODA Rapid is expected to provide a shot in the arm to the brand’s rapidly growing fleet sales. On-theroad pricing starts from £12,900 for the Rapid 1.2-litre 75PS in entry level S trim, rising to £17,850 for the Rapid 1.6 TDI CR 105PS in flagship Elegance spec.

If you are lucky enough to have a pond, large or small, at this time of year check all the pond plants and remove all dead and dying growth.
If you have a pump to run a fountain or waterfall, now is the time to clean and service it and store it until Spring. Feed the fish before Winter hibernation.
Cover the pond with netting to stop leaves from falling into the water and sinking to the bottom. Too much rotting vegetation in the water will create methane gas to the detriment of fish and other wildlife as well as a disgusting, smelly layer of sludge in the bottom that you will have to deal with, sooner or later!
If we have a severe winter, be ready to cover the pond completely during really freezing weather, or at least try to ensure fish can get oxygen by keeping a small area ice-free by using a ball or floating bowl. If the pond is covered with a sheet of ice, pour boiling water into the bowl until it can be lifted out.
In early Autumn, if you have clumps of marginal and bog plants, they can be divided and cut back the leaves of waterside plants.
Having said all that, I've actually seen goldfish frozen in solid ice for weeks, only to start swimming around perfectly happily when they thawed out - so what do I know?!

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Nellie, the Dorset Publications travelling campervan took us through wonderful English rolling countryside to North Dorset this month. The views on route really are magnificent. Hayden would love to be a pilot he tells us, so we thought we would drive to the airfield and take a look at the idyllic setting of Compton Abbas. There is in fact a caravan site right there. You need to be a member of a caravan club to stay, and although we didn’t stay this time, it is certainly one we will revisit and make the most of in the future! Compton Abbas is set in Thomas Hardy country whose work was very much influenced by his rural surroundings. The airfield itself is 800 feet above sea level with 27 miles of gorgeous views on a clear day. On the way there we passed Horton’s Tower, which is a folly built in 1750. A folly is literally a building built by the rich for no purpose other than to look at and admire! This tower is 140 feet tall and was built by the Lord of Horton

‘Phesant Alley’ - we saw about 10 all told Manor who was an architect and also an MP for Dorset between 1745 and 1786. Nowadays I found out, the tower is used by Vodafone to hide mobile phone masts! At least the folly has finally been put to use. It is also a way to help preserve the old building. You can see Nellie here with the folly in the background. Continuing on our journey to Compton Abbas we drove through tiny lanes, that Nellie’s thighs could only just manage. One lane Stephen nicknamed ‘Pheasant Alley’ due to amount of pheasants crossing the very narrow road! You really are ‘out in the sticks’ and I have to say I like that after a busy week working. On arriving at the airfield I thought we wouldn’t see many planes taking off as the weather had been pretty mixed, but to our delight the sun started shining and we did indeed see about 10 planes take off and land. It is really exciting! There are many different types of small planes and I

We had a great day out. Stephen is looking at treating Hayden to a flying lesson for his Birthday (shush…don’t tell Hayden!). To our surprise we learned you can be as young as 7 to fly your own plane… with a trained pilot of course! This will either make Hayden more determined to become a pilot, or maybe he will decide to take a different career after all. I wonder which?
There is a restaurant at the site which has a great reputation for home made food. You can go for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea. Wine is also on the menu. Group bookings can be taken and, with fantastic views of the countryside and the runway where the planes take off and land, it would be an ideal place for a special occasion! In fact on this trip we saw someone having a 50th birthday celebration.

THE GLOBE Lost in a lost civilisation by Lisa Eldridge
I can barely see before me as the walls appear to snake in and out. I gingerly take each step carefully, unsure of the direction I am walking. All I can hear are footsteps and the sound of our voices as they echo from the high canyon walls. I feel as though I’m stuck in a computer game, looking for the exit but with no vision to see. ‘Are we going the right way?’ I ask but no one seems to know. There are no stars and the night sky barely lights the way. Just hours before, this ancient city of Petra in Jordan was bustling with hoards of tourists and sellers. Now, it is empty except for five Americans and one English girl. I have just taken the last donkey ride and the place is deserted. When I entered the ‘Red-Rose City’ five hours ago, little did I know that I would be one of the last people to leave this historical site.

Entry to Petra isn’t cheap and will cost 50 Jordanian Dinar for a day pass or 55 JD for two days but the proceeds go to the Queen Eilah humanitarian fund and the local Bedouins. If you have the time, explore Little Petra - the more unknown part of the site where you can avoid the crowds.
Petra attracts hoards of visitors each year and is the main attraction in Jordan. Known as the ‘Red Rose’ city, this sandstone carved site is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Last year marked the 2000th year of rediscovery of this ancient city that once belonged to the Nabataean civilization. It is a place of timeless beauty with a kaleidoscope of colours and royal tombs. The Treasury itself is enough to leave you breathless before climbing the 800 steps to the Monastery that stands 50 metres tall. Night tours are held by candlelight on Mondays and Thursdays but being there at dusk is just as magical in this heritage site, half as old as time. But if the hike around the sites are too much, take a leaf out of my book and take a leisurely donkey ride, only
