Dear Ferndown & West Parley residents, A very Merry Christmas Edition 139 to you all! We do hope that you are all prepared and are ready to put your feet up in front of a roaring fire with a glass of your favourite tipple in your hand. The thought is good but very often Debbie & Stephen Corney that is not the case. with our son Hayden Last minute shopping, cleaning the house before the parents, friends or family arrive. It can all get a bit stressful, let’s face it. Maybe it is time to stop worrying, let someone else help where they can and smile your way through. That would be Nellie’s suggestion! It works for her… I think I will try it. We have had a very good year with lots of travelling and fun outings. Now is the time to start planning the new 2018. How exciting! A new year, a new start, or maybe more of the same, but certainly a time to create a future. Stephen and I thank all of you for supporting the advertisers in 2017. Charity Partnership raises over £11,000 for local young people The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation was delighted to have been selected as Sainsbury’s Ferndown Local Charity of the Year for 2016/17. Sainsbury’s colleagues and customers have been great friends of the charity for many years, but no-one was expecting the incredible amount of £11,455.42 which was raised in store and donated by Sainsbury’s from carrier bag sales. Pictured below presenting a big cheque to Pete Thornton, Chairman of the JTYAF, is a group of Sainsbury’s colleagues together with Sainsbury’s Ferndown, Store Manager, Richard Lockett. The charity would like to thank Sainsbury’s Ferndown and all the exceptionally kind shoppers and colleagues who have contributed to this huge total. Thanks, must also go to the JTYAF Volunteers and particularly Royal Marine Richie Puttock and his team, whose Press Up Challenge alone, raised £3600. Working in partnership with Sainsbury’s for
the benefit of local young people really puts the charity at the heart of the community and has made a huge difference to the opportunities that can be provided to local youngsters. Store Manager, Richard Lockett, commented, “We have had a fantastic year working with the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation and we are extremely proud to have helped raise £11,455 over the year. Our colleagues have voted to support the Foundation for another year and hopefully we will have an equally successful year together.” So it is all set to continue! The JTYAF will be in store at Sainsbury’s Ferndown from the 15th to 17th December and shoppers will be treated to a bit of added Festive sparkle with the several choirs singing Christmas carols, including the fabulous Bournemouth Male Voice Choir. The violence of nature The deer rut is one of the most powerful and shocking displays nature has to offer. Deer have a reputation for being shy and retiring, but their character changes drastically when the rutting season begins in autumn.
The rutting season is a time for male deer to demonstrate their power and dominance to decide which individuals get to mate with the does. These highly charged displays of violence, noise and drama, can lead to death and injury, but are an essential part of creating the next generation. Hormone levels are the trigger for the stags’ assertive behaviour. The levels of hormones go from ‘flat’ to ‘surge’, bringing on the enormous bone growth of the antlers. You may hear a deer rut before you see it. Males bellow and belch to intimidate their rivals and warn Sika Stags at Holton Lee

younger males to stay away, creating what could be described as more of a bar brawl than a fight. However, when the physical violence starts, there will be pushing, shoving and the eventual lock of antlers. The hormones surging through their bodies is exponential at this point, but the rut is also exhausting for the males; only the fittest will survive. The best time to see deer rutting is at dawn and dusk during autumn. Often deer are so distracted and preoccupied with rutting, it will allow you to get closer than usual to witness their behaviour and take photos. However, be warned, for your own safety it is not advisable to get too close to them, and be sure to keep control of dogs – if deer are disturbed during a rut, this could affect the future paternity of an entire herd. Outstanding success for Moors Valley Country Park at Dorset Tourism Awards Staff and volunteers at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest near Ringwood are celebrating a third year of success in the Dorset Tourism Awards having taken Gold in the Large Attraction category. The Park was also awarded Silver in the new Artistic, Cultural and Learning Experience category, and Communication Ranger Katie Davies received a personal award for Outstanding Customer Service. Go Ape, which provides tree top adventures at Moors Valley also received a Silver award in the Active and Sporting Experience category. “To win one award is amazing, but to come away with so many is simply fantastic!” said Clare Gronow, Team Leader at the Park. “Delivering that special Moors Valley experience would not be possible without our team of incredibly dedicated staff. Their combined talents play a huge part in making sure all our 750,000 visitors enjoy their time with us, regardless of age or ability, so I am really delighted that those efforts have been recognised across so many awards this year.” Jointly owned and managed by East Dorset District Council and the Forestry Commission, Moors Valley offers a unique combination of outdoor play, working forest and wonderful wildlife for everyone to enjoy in a safe outdoor environment. One of its core objectives is to provide opportunities for visitors to experience, understand and learn about wildlife and wider environmental issues and the Park’s
environmental education and creative art and craft programme currently reaches over 10,000 people every year. A packed programme of family events runs throughout December and Moors Valley is looking forward to another great year in 2018 as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. The latest Dorset Tourism Awards bring the number of tourism accolades won by the Park in the last three years to 11. In the 2015 Dorset Tourism Awards, Moors Valley won Large Visitor Attraction (Gold) and Access and Inclusivity (Silver) as well as being named Winner of Winners. In 2016 the Park carried off Gold in both the Sustainable Tourism and Access and Inclusivity categories. In the regional South West Tourism Excellence Awards it achieved Silver in the Large Visitor Attraction category in 2015/6 and Bronze in both the Sustainable Tourism and Access & Inclusivity categories in 2016/17.

Wimborne’s Festival In 1951 a Souvenir Programme for Wimborne’s Festival was produced, covering a series of events from the 10 to 16 June of that year. It was organised to celebrate the Festival of Britain. Local organisations involved in the Festival included local schools and churches, the British Legion, Boy Scouts and Fire Brigade. The programme began on the Sunday with services held at the churches in the town. On the Monday the Urban District Council organised the Beating of the Bounds, the ancient custom of walking the boundaries of the parish. The circular route started and ended at Knob Crook. Bowls and tennis tournaments, and cricket matches were played over the week. There was a Schools’ Day on the Wednesday, the local schools putting on a ‘display of physical exercises’ and ‘maypole and country dancing’ at the Recreation Ground, and an ‘arts and crafts exhibition’ in the Wimborne Boys’ Council School. The Festival concluded with a ‘Historical Pageant’ organised on the Saturday. There were two performances starting from Park Lane and processing to the Recreation Ground. The pageant was based on Queen Elizabeth’s granting of a charter in 1563 to the Grammar School. The organisers made it clear that there was no evidence that the Queen attended in person. The pageant

Julian Fellowes to be guest reader at Julia’s House Carols by Candlelight Actor and writer Julian Fellowes of Downton Abbey fame will be among the guest readers at this year’s Julia’s House Carols by Candlelight at Wimborne Minster on Wednesday, 6th December. Tickets are on sale now and there has already been a lot of interest from people wanting to book following previous sell-out dates. The event, now a firm favourite in the Dorset Christmas calendar, is well known for lively mix of celebrity readers, music – this year there will be performances by the Funky Little Choir and Lockyer’s Middle School Choir from Corfe Mullen – plus traditional carols There are usually one or two surprises in store for those attending. Last year, Julia’s House Ambassador and AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe and his son popped in to support the event. Doors open at 6.15pm for a 7pm start. Following the candlelit concert guests will be invited to stay on and
enjoy mulled wine and mince pies. Tickets cost £15 for adults and £5 for under-12s. They are available online at Juliashouse.org/carols17 or by calling the fundraising office on 01202 644220. Carols by Candlelight will be raising funds to support families with lifelimited children across Dorset and Wiltshire. Free Christmas carol concert to bring patients and hospital staff together Bournemouth Hospital Charity invites the public to join them for a free Christmas carol service this December at Christchurch Priory. The special service takes place at the historic church on Wednesday 13 December at 7.30pm and will see hospital staff, patients and their loved ones join together to celebrate the Christmas story. The first ever hospital carol service features readings by patients, consultants and chaplains, as well as prayers and carols that all can join in. Special musical accompaniment will be provided by the Bournemouth Male Voice Choir and mulled wine and mince pies will be offered for all who attend this festive event. Events Fundraiser Karen Smith says Bournemouth Hospital Charity is delighted to hold the carol concert at the Christchurch Priory.

Environmental Science A level Course launches at FUS 6th Form Ferndown Upper School 6th Form teams up with Dorset Urban Heath Partnership to deliver new Environmental Science A Level Last Friday saw FUS 6th Form’s Environmental Science students take part in the first of a series of trips arranged by the Dorset Urban Heath Partnership (DUHP). To help ensure outstanding course provision, FUS Sixth form has announced an exclusive partnership with the DUHP helping deliver education beyond the classroom on our new A level course. The DUHP is made up of 14 organisations working together to protect and enhance the Dorset heathlands which are of international ecological importance. On their first field trip, students were taught ecological sampling and environmental observation skills by Sarah Allen, Education Officer for the DUHP. This involved the use of luxmeters, anemometers and other technical equipment generously funded by the DUHP to develop practical research skills. Fortunately the good (but cold) weather allowed students to investigate the rare heathland habitat at Ferndown Common. Other field trips over the two years will follow, including students putting their newly learned skills to the test in their own investigations at other sites. Toby Osborne, Deputy head of Science said, “As a STEM school we are trying to open up new opportunities for students in a range of science areas. As one of the few local sixth forms to offer this amazing A level we wanted our students to get
exceptional teaching and experiences on our course. Our partnership with the DUHP will ensure our Sixth Formers get to use their environmental science skills in practice and have fantastic experiences you wouldn’t normally get on other courses.” The DUHP has also arranged talks from expert speakers from the environmental science field for FUS 6th Form Students, throughout the year. Students at the end of the year will also be taking part in outreach work in local primary schools to raise environmental awareness. Sarah Allen from the DUHP said, “The students were a credit to the school. They really engaged with the field work well and I look forward to seeing them use these skills on our future field trips.” The Environmental Science A level looks at the living environment, the physical world and how human activity impacts upon it. After 2016’s record-breaking pantomime, Cinderella, BH Live and UK Productions are delighted to present Jack and the Beanstalk at Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre. The 2.30pm matinee performance on Saturday 9 December will be a British Sign Language Interpreted performance by Wendy Ebsworth MBE. Customers are advised to speak with BH Live Tickets staff when booking tickets to ensure that they are seated in the correct location. This years relaxed performance will be on Wednesday 13 December at 10.00am. This is a specially adapted and relaxed performance of our pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, to enable people with a wide range of disabilities including autism and dementia, as well as very young children and anyone else who would benefit from a relaxed performance, to engage in and enjoy the full experience of live theatre.
We will be making some minor changes to the pantomime for this performance as well as special effects, lighting and sound: • The sound levels will be lowered • The house lights although dimmed will be kept at 50%, so it is safe to leave the theatre • Stage smoke will be reduced • Doors are left open; patrons are free to move around during the performance and take time out in a quiet area outside of the theatre auditorium. Customers can also request a copy of our Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre visual story. The visual story is designed to help customers prepare for their visit to the theatre and familiarise themselves with the theatre surroundings. We have also listened to customer feedback and introduced some earlier evening performances starting at 5.30pm on Tuesday 5, Wednesday 6 & Wednesday 13 December.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Well Nellie was rather proud of herself this month as she was invited to be the guest of honour at the prestigious West Moors Horticultural Society yearly awards ceremony at the West Moors Memorial Hall. Not only that she had to present the 113 awards to all of those very talented people! She could hardly contain her excitement. All raring to go one fine Saturday morning, she tooted her horn, off she skipped and we certainly arrived in style. What is really amazing about these clubs and societies is that they are run by very dedicated, local people who literally spend hours of their own time having meetings, followed up with minutes and reports and then of course there are all the preparations for each event. Arriving in the hall we were well looked after by Peter Dunning who was all smiles.

There were tables and chairs set up for over 60 people with a full lunch all neatly covered over with foil for each attendee. “Custom Lunches” had prepared the wonderful ham salad. It was fresh and tasty, and highly recommended! Nellie loved it. The committee had done a fantastic job led by Sue Hamlett. The table decorations on each table were beautifully presented and immediately showed the talent we were surrounded by. Then there were the desserts superbly homemade by Sylvia Barrett! Oh, how tasty they were, all freshly cooked. Stephen had two different desserts and Nellie - well, I think she lost count! About those thighs… is there any wonder? The wine was flowing at the bar and spirits were very high.

The presentation of the awards was a sheer delight. One gentleman won seven different cups! How talented is he. We all know it is the taking part that counts… but winning is such fun, let’s face it! There were prizes for flower decorations, vegetable growing, cakes, crafts and all sorts of flower growing. Everyone in the room deserved a medal for taking part and creating such a great team event. In today’s modern world of TVs, computers and high-tech phones it is so refreshing to see these clubs thriving. This Horticultural Society has 470 members which is incredible! What Nellie realised is that it is down to the individual committee members who keep the flame alight and enthuse people to take part. It is good to know that these clubs very much still exist, and it is up to us to find out what is available locally and have the confidence to go and take part. When you do it is a lot of fun. You

Michael Caine By Tim Saunders Surrey resident Maurice Joseph Micklewhite is one of the most famous English actors. More commonly known as Sir Michael Caine CBE, he has appeared in more than 115 films since he was 20 years old and they have grossed more than $4bn. Aged 84, the Oscar winner, who is worth an estimated $75m, is as energetic as ever but fears for the future. “I know my days are numbered and that’s the main worry,” he told The Sun on Sunday. “I’ve had to cut back on the drinking and I’m always looking up what’s the best thing against cancer, so I’ll eat that or do this or not do that. I’ll probably drop dead talking to you but you know I’ve lost 13 kgs just because I want to see my grandchildren. They’re twins of six and a boy of seven. I’d like to get to 17 for the boy.” His wife Shakira, who he has been married to since 1973, has helped him stop heavy drinking and he enjoys a very healthy lifestyle which includes no sugar, salt or gluten. The secret of a long marriage according to Michael is two bathrooms! This healthy regime has helped the veteran actor, renowned for his distinctive cockney accent, to tackle his latest project; the film of the Hatton Garden robbery, expected to be released in 2018. It portrays the audacious £200m safe deposit robbery of 2015, planned and executed by four elderly men. Michael, who takes a leading role in the film, acts alongside Ray Winstone, Jim Broadbent and Tom Courtenay. Six members of the actual gang were sentenced to seven years imprisonment. However, a seventh member remains at large and £10m of gems remain missing. Often as actors
become older they fret about whether any roles will still come their way. But when Michael read about the robbery in the newspapers he said he would love to star in a film about it if somebody would only write it. The London born actor, who incidentally voted for Brexit because he wanted freedom, has appeared in numerous blockbuster films including the Batman trilogy, Going in Style, Get Carter, Youth, Alfie, Harry Brown, The Italian Job and Zulu. He also played Ebenezer Scrooge in The Muppet Christmas Carol in 1992. He has two children. All of this is a long way from where he started as an assistant stage manager who would also perform small walk-on parts for the Horshambased Westminster Repertory Company who were performing at the Carfax Electric Theatre. By 1954 he found himself in London. And two years later he was starring in his first film A Hill in Korea. Michael Caine is one of only two actors nominated for an Academy Award for acting in every decade from the 1960s to 2000s (the other one being Jack Nicholson; Laurence Olivier was also nominated for an acting Academy Award in five different decades, beginning in 1939 and ending in 1978). In 2000, Caine was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his contribution to cinema. Michael is a fan of chill-out music and released a compilation CD called Cained in 2007. He provided vocal samples for the Ska-pop band Madness for their 1984 hit “Michael Caine” as his daughter was a fan. He has sung in film roles as well, including Little Voice and for the 1992 musical film The Muppet Christmas Carol. GRANNY’S XMAS PUDDING
The stout in this recipe will add the moisture to the pudding and the cocoa powder makes the pudding look lovely and dark. Ingredients: 1oz mixed peel 1oz ground almonds 2 medium sized eggs ¼ teaspoon almond essence 2 teaspoons brandy 1 can of stout 2 teaspoons cocoa powder ¼ teaspoon nutmeg ¼ teaspoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon mixed spice 4oz plain flour 4oz breadcrumbs 4oz beef suet 4oz brown sugar 4oz raisins 4oz sultanas 4oz glace cherries 1 grated lemon rind ½ apple grated ½ carrot grated
Equipment: 2 pint pyrex bowl, pudding bowl, clean tea towel or pudding cloth. Method: Place all the dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix together. Add the eggs and the brandy and mix then pour in the stout gradually and keep stirring until your mixture is the consistency of a loose cake mix. Grease your pudding bowl with a little butter and pour in the pudding mix. Cover with foil and then a tea towel or pudding cloth and tie it to the top of the bowl, this is to prevent any water getting in. Place in a large boiling pan and fill with water ¾ of the way up the side of the bowl. Boil on a moderate heat for 6 hours keep topping up the water with boiled kettle water if the level starts to drop. When the pudding is ready turn it out and leave to cool. These puddings can be stored wrapped in foil from now until Christmas, to reheat just place the pudding back in the bowl and boil for another 2 hours on Christmas day. On Your Plot Scarves at the ready
December is perhaps the one month where, in the build up to Christmas with roaring fires and shorter days, even the hardiest of gardeners may struggle to get out there and do the necessary for their plots. December often means hard frosts and you need to harvest your winter cabbages, celery and cauliflowers this month. Parsnips and swedes are pretty hardy so if you are a bit overrun with your crop you can keep these in the ground until you need them. If bad weather is forecast then keep some straw handy to cover them over and stop the ground from freezing thema in. Make sure that you check your stored crops for any sign of disease and remove any that look problematic. If the ground isn’t too sticky then this is also a great time to get out your hoe and work between your vegetable crops. Look out for any plants which might have been lifted by frost and press them gently back into the ground. Keep an eye on your Brussels too - these should be starting now so try cooking them in different ways in your meals before the ‘big day’ (adding a spot of garlic can make all the difference) until you find something suitable to go with the bird. You don’t just have to eat them on Christmas Day you know! Be mindful of any snowfall this month or in future weeks and help out your plants and shrubs as best you can by brushing off any settled snow. This helps to prevent any damage with branches breaking under the weight. Just make sure you if you have small children they don’t take this as an opportunity to flick snow everywhere otherwise your quiet gardening time could suddenly turn into an impromptu snowball fight! Birds at this time of the year need all the help they can get too. There are some great plants that you can introduce to help them as well as popping out the traditional feeders. These
include hawthorn, holly, beriberi and indeed your holly can double up as a craft project for indoor decorations over the festive season. If you are planting these types of shrubs for our feathered friends then do try and put them somewhere quiet in the garden where the birds won’t be frightened off. Sit back at your window and watch them feed contentedly whilst you enjoy the view. Why not get out a few gardening books, grab a cup of tea and imagine how you’d like your garden to look next summer? More or less vegetables? Bigger shrubs, more colour? Whatever you choose, pat yourself on the back for all the hard work you’ve done this year and think how green your fingers really could be!

Renaut Koleos 2017 By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk
The Renault Koleos won’t rock your world, but it’s a decent enough SUV. It looks a bit too like many other SUVs out there – most noticeably the Skoda Kodiaq, but it’s an impressive car, nonetheless. I got behind the wheel of the flagship trim level – the Signature Nav, which has a generous amount of Kit, comprising big 19-inch alloy wheels, a sat-nav, a touchscreen and leather-bound seats. The car’s infotainment system, accessed via the touchscreen is easy and selfexplanatory to use, and the Renault is practical, offering cubby holes and four USB slots. What’s more, the Koleos is endowed with good quality soft-touch plastics and the hide wrapping the seats and steering wheel is top notch. The top-of-the-tree 2.0 dCi 175 AWD X-Tronic Koleos I drove really is the bee’s-knees, in terms of out-and-out technology and cabin refinement. The layout is well thought out for driver and passengers, and room is more than respectable. The wheelbase is the same as the X-Trail’s at 2,705mm – and this equates to awesome legroom. Better still, the Koleos’ load area is 29 litres bigger than the Nissan’s – measuring 579 litres. Alas, take a tape-measure to the similar-looking Skoda Kodiaq and the Czech-made car’s boot is 630 litres. Oh well, you can’t have everything. Strangely the Gallic car brand isn’t providing the Koleos with a seven-seat option, though. This could be a deal-breaker as Skoda’s Kodiaq does. Renault gets away with it, however, by explaining that you can always go for the Grand Scenic if you need all those seats. On the road, the Renault Koleos is well-behaved and easy to like. Zero to 62mph arrives in 9.5 seconds and the top speed is 125mph, so the car has plenty of ‘go’ for motorway commutes or for overtakes on lesser roads. The Koleos has 174 horses under its ample bonnet to provide such power,
and this helps tug the car along, even with five-up and a fully laden boot. The auto ‘box isn’t bad, even though it’s a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This means the transmission shifts through a constant range of ratios. Alas, CVTs don’t always work as seamlessly as they should, resulting in a rather jerky driving experience. Nevertheless, I’m pleased to report Renault has stuck an advanced CVT into the Koleos that uses technology to copy a sequential ‘box. This makes the car painless to operate. The Koleos’ride is super comfy, with its soft suspension making you all but forget the existence of potholes. But the squidgy springs don’t wreck the handling; if anything, the French SUV comes across as predictable and steady. The Koleos I drove had all-wheel-drive, so I also tested it off-road. Because the car has good ground clearance I could drive it over stones and hummocks without fear of ripping bits off the underneath of the Koleos. Furthermore, the Renault grips well in mud and anything not resembling tarmac. It’s no Land Rover, but it’s a great asset to have if you live in the sticks, or you plan on lugging a tin-tent to a grassy caravan park or suchlike. The Koleos is a car that is roomy and well-appointed. It also flies the luxury SUV flag for Renault. This means it could attract fresh customers to the brand who are looking for an SUV with a bit of French flair..
