4 Dear Ferndown & West Parley residents, Can you believe it is this Edition 115 time of year already? I must start to get myself into the Christmas swing of things. This year we are going to Oxford to Stephen’s parents so we are creating two Christmases, one in Oxford and another on my Birthday, 22nd December, to celebrate Debbie & Stephen Corney with my parents. It’s a good with our son Hayden excuse to let our hair down! The Ferndown & West Parley Directory as always is here to bring you news articles, puzzles and competitions. There are many loyal supporters of our local trades people and Stephen and I really appreciate that. Thank you. Husky howls and Hansel and Gretel add to seasonal delights at Moors Valley Country Park this Christmas Fresh from being named Best Large Visitor Attraction in the 2015 Dorset Tourism Awards, Christmas at Moors Valley is set to be full of fun this year with a range of new experiences joining the Park’s regular seasonal delights. In addition to a craft market, Christmas tree sales, train rides and woodland trails, 2015 welcomes Christmas Jumper Sunday, a Forest Forge Theatre festive production and the distinctive sound of howling husky dogs offering forest sled rides. The Christmas countdown at Moors Valley, near Ringwood, begins when the Christmas tree shop opens from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 5 December until 20 December. With trees ranging from four to eight feet in height, and a choice of traditional Norway Spruce or the non-drop Nordman Fir, the pine forests of Moors Valley provide the perfect backdrop as you choose your special tree. Parking is free when purchasing a tree. The Christmas Craft Market also runs daily from 5 to 20 December and features beautiful handmade gifts from Dorset and Hampshire. Other activities this year include several festive workshops. These range from willow weaving for adults from 10.30am to 3pm on Friday 11 December, making wreaths and table decorations on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December, clay decorations from 11am to 12noon on Saturday 19 December, and a chocolate workshop for adults and children from 10am to 12 noon on Monday 21 December. Anyone who has a festive Christmas jumper tucked away at the back of their wardrobe is invited to give it an airing on Christmas Jumper Sundays. While no prizes will be given, there will be a small surprise gift for anyone modelling their natty knitwear when they visit the Park on 6, 13 and 20 December.
A new and exciting addition to the Moors Valley Christmas is the chance to meet working husky dogs, learn about how they are looked after, and even enjoy a thrilling ride on a husky-drawn sled on 12 and 13 December. Minimum age to take part is six years old and children must be accompanied by an adult. The Forest Forge Theatre Company brings its seasonal offering of Hansel and Gretel to the Visitor Centre on Tuesday 8 December. Hansel and Gretel must work together to find their way home after becoming lost in the woods. This interactive adventure includes an encounter with a tiny witch and a beautiful house made of sweets! Suitable for all ages, doors open at 5.30pm for a 6pm start. Seasons restaurant at Moors Valley is also joining in the festive spirit with a different Christmas special each day with freshly cooked food using locally sourced ingredients. Talking about Wildlife...
Lovely Lytchett Bay Still, shimmering waters, the flash of a kingfisher, the ‘peep’ of a wading bird, the bright dazzle of a dragonfly and even the glimpse of a lizard scuttling away. Just a few of the sights and sounds of Lytchett Bay, a quiet haven for wildlife and people in a sheltered north-western corner of Poole Harbour.
The Great Heath purchase of the eastern half of Lytchett Bay, including an area of shoreline, woods and heath, has created the new Lytchett Bay Nature Reserve, owned by Dorset Wildlife Trust and managed in partnership with Amphibian and Reptile Conservation. The reserve is one of the few places where we can still experience the natural change from heathland to marshland habitats which could once be found all round Poole Harbour. The heathland habitat here supports rare reptiles as well as rare breeding birds. The Bay is a key site for wading birds and wildfowl, which feed on the rich invertebrate life of the sheltered mudflats.

Parley Wood The volunteers have now recommenced work in the wood to maintain and build on the excellent work done in the last few years. Clearance of invasive species and the creation of pathways are among the tasks they will undertake. The work days are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and, if you would like to offer a session (or two) a week the volunteers would love to hear from you. (A penchant for daft jokes is handy!) S and SE in Bloom After 2 years of gaining silver awards in the South and South East in Bloom competition we were thrilled to be awarded a silver gilt this year. The judges commented “Pride in the village was more than evident at every stage of our most interesting tour. The large In Bloom group, involving so many volunteers, has worked hard to improve this year on year, making great and noticeable strides, with all round hard work, motivated by civic pride and consciously working to implement the recommendations of last year’s judging team. This is a great example of a can do entry seeming not to be thwarted by the enormity of so many challenges. Well done.
In its first entry into the RHS Its Your Neighbourhood 2015 competition, run alongside the In Bloom competition, the West Parley Residents Association gained the second highest category of “thriving”, just one mark beneath the top award of outstanding, a fantastic achievement at the first entry. The judges were particularly impressed by the work done in Parley Wood to improve access and recreate a traditional woodland setting for the benefit of all residents. The awards were collected by volunteers Andy Steele and Diana Penwill at a recent event in Brighton.
Christmas decorations The Parish Council is looking to put up Christmas decorations on the main roads, the first time this has been done in the village, and we are suggesting that the shops put up Christmas displays in their front windows to brighten both Parley Cross and Glenmoor Road.
Food Bank Boxes will shortly be in place in various locations around the village for contributions. Please look out for them. Further information will be found on the WPPC website and facebook page.

If your Aunt still had mental capacity then she would be free to make a Lasting Power of Attorney appointing someone she trusts to manage her financial affairs. However, once someone has lost mental capacity (meaning they are no longer able to manage their own affairs) then someone must apply to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order. I only have 65 years left on my lease and I’m worried I won’t be able to sell. What can I do? Lenders have different requirements as to the length of the lease but many will require an unexpired term of at least 70 years. Providing you have owned your leasehold property for at least two years then you should qualify to extend your lease under the Leasehold Reform, Housing and Urban Development Act 1993. The process is started by the serving of a Section 42 Notice on your landlord. This is the formal route to lease extension and would extend your current lease by a further 90 years. You could extend your lease informally with the agreement of your landlord. This should be less costly and potentially quicker than using the formal route. You should bear in mind that there are associated costs to

Heritage News
Heritage: Conservation area in Parley West Parley represents the smallest conservation area in East Dorset, comprising a handful of buildings at the southern end of Church Lane, and one of the most recent to be designated, in 1991. The conservation area boundary includes the curtilages of All Saints Church, the Old Rectory and Mead Cottage to the north. Immediately to the south and south-west of the hamlet are the water-meadows extending to some two and a half hectares (6 acres) in area before reaching the Stour riverbank. The influence of the river on the settlement is much less significant than in earlier times when crossing by boat was the normal way and crossing by horse was possible. The whole conservation area of buildings and meadows formed one of the ancient areas of settlement in West Parley being one of the many settlements along the Stour with Iron Age origins. The Old Rectory is an elegant two-storey late Georgian house, listed Grade 2. The substantial building has stuccoed walls and a hipped, low pitched, slate roof, large sash windows and a plain classical porch. The Rectory was sold by the Church in 1947 when the current Rectory was built in New Road. The building stands in extensive mature grounds surrounded by a long brick wall of mellow orange /red. The brickwork continues over the road at Church Farmhouse. This late 18th century 5 bay two-storey house has attics within small dormers. A number of old traditional local brick and slate barns behind also fall within the conservation area. Mead Cottage to the north was once 2 farm cottages, built around the late 1700s/ early 1800s. There is a Victorian extension on the side. The Church is the centrepiece of the area. The nave has mid 12th century origins and
the whole church is thought to replace a Saxon church, which may have replaced an even earlier building. The chancel is 14th century and north porch 15th century. Much of the church was rebuilt in 1896 but reused many items, including window frames. In the Church grounds stands a sundial, the post of which formed part of the gibbet which stood at Gibbet Firs on Parley Common to the north. The churchyard also contains a small group of ornate and well-preserved early 18th century gravestones, near the south-west corner of the churchyard. The only vehicular access to the whole area is Church Lane, a narrow lane that joins Christchurch Road to the north. The lane becomes more rural with soft verges and hedging then ends abruptly in the conservation area but a footpath continues south to close to the former river crossing at Riddles Ford that was in use in prehistoric times. This area has hardly changed in 200 years and can be imagined as it would have been in the days of the horse and cart with the tranquillity only disturbed by the occasional overflying planes from Bournemouth Airport close by. This area is on the route of the 4 ½ mile West Parley Heritage Walk. Details of the walk are on the West Parley Parish Council web site www.westparley-pc.gov.uk. John Cullen

LEWIS 6DYLQJV I love a good rant as much, if not more, than the next man. Yet it’s time to accept that spouting on about the dire, dismal, spit-worthy interest rates savers now earn does nowt. Instead, we must forget complaining and turn ourselves into active savers to maximise our earnings. Check your savings account and cash ISAs now - many pay under 0.5%. Yet that’s easy to smash, and every account below is covered by the UK £85,000 per person, per financial institution savings safety guarantee. Here are my top 10 tips. 1. Make your bank account pay you up to 5%. A raft of bank accounts pay higher in-credit interest than top savings, with the aim of sucking people into switching. Santander.co.uk 123 is the prime one to look at. While others have higher rates than its 3%, this on a far larger amount of £3,000 to £20,000. This means it pays up to nearly £600 interest a year compared with the next biggest, Club Lloyds’ £200. While it does have a £2/mth fee, for most that’s easily covered as it pays cashback on direct debits such as mobiles, energy and water. This adds up, as Hannah tweeted me: “£260/yr cashback on mortgage, phones, TV.” If you’ve less to save, rates of up to 5% are available on smaller amounts. It’s worth noting though that to get one of these accounts, you usually need to pass a credit check and set up a few standing orders or direct debits. You must also meet the ‘min monthly deposit’ amount, which is how they ensure you pay your income in there. 2. Couples do it better together. If one of you pays tax at a higher rate than the other, provided you trust each other, put non-ISA savings in the lower taxpayer’s name and you’ll take home more. Plus when it comes to the high interest bank accounts, many allow you to open one each, plus a joint one. With Santander that means you could cover £60,000 – though you still need to meet all the conditions for each. 3. Grab a FREE £100 plus 6% interest or £5/mth. The other bank account savings route is accounts offering a free switching bribe, plus a linked highrate savings product. These tend to beat the high interest bank accounts for those saving less than roughly £4,000. Top pick is FirstDirect.com, which has won every customer service poll I’ve done. It gives switchers £100, plus has a linked savings account paying 6%, which you can put £300 a month in. The Marks and Spencer bank account (bank.marksandspencer.com) has a very similar set up. Alternatively, the Halifax.co.uk Reward account gives £100 then pays £5 each month no matter how much or little you’ve got, unless you go overdrawn when it’s wiped. This alone beats the best interest after tax for those saving less than £1,500 in the top high-interest bank savings – never mind the free cash too. 4. Earn 2.3% and protect savings from tax. Cash ISAs are just savings accounts where you don’t pay tax on the interest. Every £100 earned in normal savings nets a basic-rate taxpayer £80, higher-rate £60. In a cash ISA you get £100. You can save up to £15,240 a year and once in, it’s taxfree year after year.
The top-paying easy-access cash ISA, where you can take your cash out whenever you want, is the Nsandi.com Direct Isa paying 1.5%. Yet if you are planning to put cash away, a good alternative is Coventrybuildingsociety.co.uk with a five year fix at 2.3%. Unlike normal fixed savings, you can access your cash early by closing the account. You will lose 120 days’ interest, but even so that means keep the cash in for a year and you’d effectively earn 1.54% 5. If you put cash aside every month, earn over 3%. Regular savings accounts often pay high interest on a small amount for a short time. The top regular savers are linked to current accounts (listed in point 3 above). Yet some decent deals are open to all, including Leeds BS 3.05% AER variable on £50 to £250 a month for a year. 6. Mix and match to maximise every penny. I’m often asked “What’s the best savings account?”. There’s no one right answer. It depends on how much you’re saving, how often, if you need access to it and more. Combining accounts often wins. The goal’s for every penny to flow where it earns most, such as putting a lump sum in a fixed-rate ISA and money you put aside each month in a top regular saver. 7. Lock your cash away to boost rates and earn up to 2.5%. Fixed-rate savings have two advantages: rates are usually higher and are guaranteed. Yet in return you forgo access to the cash for that time. Over one year, Utbank.co.uk (min £500) is the winner at 1.9% AER, and for three years it’s ubluk.com (min £2,000) at 2.45% AER. Yet remember today’s interest rates are low - if rates do rise, you can’t ditch and switch. 8. Check your rates before you pooh-poohing 1.5% easy-access. While Bmsavings.co.uk’s 1.5% easy-account account sounds awful (minimum £1,000), compared to what many accounts now pay, it’s quite decent. 9. Higher-rate taxpayers, don’t forget Premium Bonds. Premium Bonds are savings accounts where the interest earned is tax-free and based on a monthly prize draw. The currently published ‘prize rate’ is 1.35%. This describes the mean average, indicating that for every £100 paid into bonds, on average £1.35 a year’s paid out. In practice, this is impossible, as the smallest prize is £25. In fact if 20 people each had £100 in, for one to win £25-plus, the remaining 19 would have to win nowt. My PremiumBondCalculator.com lets you plug in how many bonds you have, and predicts your likely winnings. In a nutshell, they can give decent returns on average compared with normal savings for higher-rate taxpayers saving largeish sums over £10,000. 10. Earn less than £15,600? Your savings should be tax free. Next April the new personal savings allowance launches, allowing basic rate taxpayers to earn £1,000 a year interest tax-free (£500 for higher rate taxpayers). Yet this year a similar scheme started for those earning under £15,600. Here you get your normal £10,600 personal allowance – under which all income is tax free. Plus you can earn up to £5,000 a year from savings interest tax-free. Speak to your bank to ensure you’re not paying more tax than you need.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Stephen’s parents have been keen caravan people for some time. Following in their footsteps we became members of the Caravan Club. This is really good value for money, as Stephen’s Mum says, “You know you will get a high quality caravan park with good, clean facilities.” So, we decided to become members and take a look for ourselves. We spent a weekend with Mr and Mrs Corney senior and Rachel, Stephen’s sister, at the Centenary site which is just 3 miles away from Bransgore in the New Forest National Park. It was originally part of a Second World War airfield where parts of the runway still exist. There is also the New Forest Airfield Memorial just to the north of the caravan park. What a great location! We love the drive through the New Forest and Nellie adores saying “Hello” to all the horses, the new forest ponies and the cows. On arriving at the Site and preparing Nellie with her roof up, we realised she was totally dwarfed by some extremely grand looking caravans that were simply stunning! I think the owners had everything that would be in a house as well as a fully equipped garden. Including the spare Porsche... Not a thing missing, satellite TV, outdoor seating…. We were amazed. Not to be perturbed Nellie stood there smiling cheerfully, greeting all
New Forest Airfields Memorial those who passed by. Stephen’s sister has a gorgeous yellow VW called “Jessie Phyllis” after their two Grandmothers. It is a very fitting name. Our big black Nellie with her long skirts to cover up her oversized thighs looks a bit imposing next to this delicate retro style VW. Anyway we can’t all have it all, can we? Hayden went off to play in the children’s park while we had a cup of tea. When he came back he was all smiles. “I really like the people here!” he exclaimed beaming. “They are really friendly.” He continued to tell us that some children were playing a game and they obviously all knew each other well. Hayden was looking quietly on when ‘Lizzy’ shouted, “Anyone we

39 don’t know can also join in!” What a great attitude to have. Hayden was immediately smitten and he and Lizzy became good friends for the two days we were there. In fact if anyone knows of a Lizzy, aged 12 ish, who goes caravanning with her parents please let me know as Hayden would love to see her again... Ahhh. Being in the New Forest is so relaxing. The site has its own Centenary Gardens with lots of bird life including Song Thrushes and Bullfinches, so for those who like our wonderful English rolling countryside, the wildlife and bird spotting, this really is an ideal location. There are also walks for those with dogs. In the evenings there is a pizza van which makes fresh pizzas while you wait, or you can indeed order for a specific time. Stephen’s Mum and Dad treated us so the pizzas tasted even better. Somehow you can’t beat eating outside in the night air listening to the sounds of the night, with good company around you. It makes all those long working hours worth it. You really feel you deserve that chilled out feeling. Camping for me definitely has that effect. I Love it.
Wakey, wakey... Rise and shine!
Nellie at Exbury with Naomi, one of the engines Exbury Gardens which was first opened to the public in 1955, is not far away. On our second day we decided to take a trip to see the steam locomotive, named Mariloo by Queen Elizabeth II in 2008, and the exquisite 200 acre gardens. For children there is a garden trail with ‘things to find’ which helps keep them entertained. Always useful! Hayden was more than happy to see what he could discover. Stephen’s Mum and Dad as well as sister are keen walkers so they were able to go much further. In fact there are over 20 miles of pathways, three woods and parkland to explore, so there is plenty to see. The beauty of Exbury Gardens is that it changes so much with the changing seasons, so for those who have been before it is worth a second, third or even fourth visit and for those who have not been before, it is a must to see, and it is not that far away either. We are so lucky here in West Moors to have our own Plantation, situated just a few miles from the sea and so close to the fantastic New Forest! What a place to live. We chose really well. Nellie was thrilled with her trip to the Centenary Site and I am sure we will be back again soon…. Where will Nellie go next…? By Debbie Corney

Craig Adams spoke to the Inner Wheel Club of Ferndown about the Ringwood Foodbank, for which the Club will be raising funds during the coming months. Thanks to donations of nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food from individuals and organisations, Ringwood Foodbank has been able to provide emergency food aid to an increasing number of adults and children over the past 12 months. As well as supplying food, the Foodbank also offers friendship and support to enable clients to find long-term solutions to their difficulties. There are now three distribution centres in operation in Ringwood, Verwood and Fordingbridge, each one opening three times a week.

Introducing... Merley House Did you know that just a mile south of Wimborne there is a stunning 18th Century Georgian Manor House? This house has many wonderful features including one of the best staircases of its type in England and stunning plasterwork ceilings throughout the house. Merley House (spelt Merly until 1946) was an ancient manor and in 1751 Merley was purchased by Ralph Willet who rebuilt the house in his own design. Willet, also the High Sheriff of Dorset, was a great art and books collector. Ralph Willett had no children so in 1795 the estate was left to his maternal cousin John Willett. The Willett family fortune was greatly affected and as a result in 1813 many of the books and pictures were auctioned. When John Willett died in 1815 the house passed to his son Henry Willett and then to a distant cousin Willett Lawrence Adye who lived at Merley from 1859 to 1869. The estate was then leased to William Charles Wentworth of Sydney, Australia.

The house was auctioned in 1875 and there is little information on the house until it was bought by Ivor Guest, 1st Lord of Wimborne in 1895. In 1927 Merley was bought by Captain Angus Vakdermar Hambro of Milton Abbas. At the outbreak of war in 1939 the estate was requisitioned by the war office and a large camp was built in the grounds until 1946 when the house was once again sold at auction in 14 lots. The current owners, the Hammicks, bought the house in the late 1960’s. In the late 1990’s the house became a business centre. Merley House Events is one of the main businesses based at the house. The company has made the house into a popular conference, wedding and party venue allowing everyone access to this beautiful house. PLOT Feeling Fruity
Few flavours compare with that of fruit freshly picked from the garden. Much of the fruit available in the shops (particularly the supermarkets) has been grown for it’s ability to travel well rather than it’s flavour and may have been picked well before it’s arrival on the shelf. If you fancy apples from your own tree, or a bowl of raspberries fresh from the garden, now is the time to act. Jobs for November:Start to harvest parsnips after the first frosts. Tidy up your greenhouse or polytunnel, wash out pots and seed trays before storing ready for the Spring Sow hardy peas or broad beans ready for an early crop next year. Use netting or chicken wire to protect your broccoli and cabbages from hungry pigeons. If you haven’t already done so, plant garlic and shallots. If your rhubarb is taking over, lift and divide the crowns before replanting.
If you are anything like me you will spend ages drooling over pictures of bushes dripping with blackcurrants or gooseberries, trees laden with apples, or bowls full of luscious raspberries but struggle to get to grips with the realities of production on your own plot! Patience is a virtue that is definitely required for growing your own, and this is particularly so with fruit trees and bushes. I have to confess to having an inclination to move on with anything that requires more than a few months to give a decent crop, but with most fruit you just have to force yourself to take the long term view and now being the proud owner of a 2 year old gooseberry bush and raspberry canes I can assure you that the waiting is worthwhile! Think carefully about where you will grow your fruit. Trees require lots of space (but are a wonderfully attractive addition to your plot) while bushes may be incorporated in your borders, but will probably need some protection if you aren’t going to loose a lot of fruit to the birds. Late autumn is an ideal time to add fruit to your plot as trees and bushes will be entering their dormant period. It is important to buy healthy plants and to ensure that they are dormant as they will transplant more successfully. If you are ordering from a reputable mail order nursery they are likely to arrange delivery to coincide with the best time for planting. You should also get
instruction on how to plant and care for your new tree or bush. Trees such as apple or plum may be grafted onto a variety of different rootstocks - this sounds complicated but all you really need to know is what effect this will have on the final size of the tree. If you have limited space it is possible to buy dwarf varieties some of which can even be suitable for container growing. Pollination is also an important consideration, some varieties are self -fertile and do not need a pollinator, while others may require another variety planted close by to act as a pollinator. When planting your tree out it may benefit from staking and protection around the base. One ‘fruit’ that is a little different and very easy to grow is Rhubarb. Rhubarb is actually classified as a vegetable, but certainly tastes good used like a fruit in crumbles and pies. November is the perfect time to plant out dormant crowns. Although these can be bought from nurseries Rhubarb tends to spread well when established and needs to be divided every few years so it is often possible to obtain surplus crowns from friends or neighbours. Plant your crown with the buds just above the soil and water well the first year. Once the plants have become established you can look forward to harvesting a good crop of delicious pink stems from Spring onwards - very welcome as the first ‘fruit’ of the year.

My Success Story “I am 59 years old and went through a very painful divorce in 2002. Since then I have had a number of difficult work situations.
