4 Dear Ferndown & West Parley residents, Welcome to the May issue of your local Directory! Nellie, Edition 133 the Dorset Publications campervan enthusiastically took us to Stonehenge this month and what a trip that was. Do read all about it inside as Nellie was quite taken with all that ‘atmosphere’. We certainly have had some Debbie & Stephen Corney good weather recently, so long with our son Hayden may it continue I say. The sun definitely makes a difference and allows us to get out and about. Hayden will soon be starting his Surf Life Saving on the beach again and I can’t wait. We had such a good summer last year - we had never been on the beach so much! How lucky we are to live in such a glorious area. In the magazine this month we have some new advertisers as well as many loyal, regular ones. Can you see the new ones? They would all love to hear from you, so please don’t forget to mention us when making those important calls and bookings. It is twelve years (doesn’t time fly) since we started our first magazine and I still get excited when I hear how well ‘our’ businesses are doing! I feel quite responsible for them and the business owners most certainly appreciate you at home. Everyone wins. New toddler club gets kids into the garden A monthly garden club for tots will launch at Knoll Gardens in Wimborne on 27 May.

Bugs and Buds aims to inspire a love of nature from an early age with tots enjoying planting, nest building and bug hunting as well as activities specific to the changing seasons at Knoll.
Bugs and Buds is part of a programme of activities being run by a charity, the Knoll Gardens Foundation that encourages sustainable, wildlife-friendly gardening based on the methods used in the garden at Knoll.
Knoll Gardens is famous for its glorious ornamental grasses that provide wonderful habitats for wildlife as well as texture, sound and movement. Many of the deciduous grasses also grow from ground level to over five feet high in one season creating a constantly changing environment for youngsters to explore, whilst other things to discover include rare trees and shrubs, ponds,
The monthly club will run from 10.30 – 12 noon on the last Saturday of each month, starting on 27 May, and costs £4.50 per child. It is aimed at tots ages 2 – 4 and their parent/ carer. Talking about Wildlife...
Helping the birds Many of us will have wanted to help our familiar garden birds by putting up nest boxes for them to use in the spring. We rightly love the sight of the blue tits and robins taking advantage of our help.
But beyond our gardens, out on our beautiful heaths, there are other birds which cannot be helped by our thoughtful actions, such as putting up nest boxes. This is because their specialist lifestyle involves nesting on the ground amongst the heather and bracken. So, these birds need our help and thoughtfulness in another way. They very much need us to think constantly about not disturbing them as they keep vigil on their eggs or chicks when we go out on the heath. We, or our dogs, only have to stray a very short distance from a path for a rare woodlark or nightjar to be scared off its vulnerable nest - quite possibly causing the bird to fail to breed successfully. A failed year is very significant to such rare birds which Nightjar

can only breed on this rare habitat we are so lucky to have around us. This is why it is so important that we stick to the paths and keep our dogs on a lead from March, when the nesting season begins, right through the summer, when it ends. None of us would deliberately destroy the nest of a robin or blue tit, but it is terribly easy to unwittingly destroy the nest of a woodlark or nightjar just by leaving the paths or not keeping our dogs on a lead in the spring and summer. If we follow the ‘heathland code’ in this and other ways, we can both protect our the special wildlife of the heath and enjoy its beauty to the full. Secret Local Resistance With the defeat of allied forces in France in the Summer of 1940, the threat of a German invasion of Britain along the south coast was very real. Having lost most of its equipment the Army was in a poor state and Winston Churchill ordered that a British Resistance Organisation be created urgently to support regular troops against any invasion. This resistance was based on a network of highly secret Auxiliary Units spread around the country, mainly along the east and south coasts. The Auxiliary Units were formed from the best members of the Home Guard and suitable members of the general public with good local knowledge and were the first organised resistance unit in Europe. Trained at Coleshill, near Swindon, in the use of explosives, in close combat and communications, in the event of invasion they could activate, go into hiding and only swing into action once German forces had invaded their area and the fighting had moved on. Their mission was to carry out a guerrilla campaign to disrupt the German forces in any way they could, targeting aircraft, fuel supplies, railways and key military targets. They were supported by network of men and woman who acted as local ‘eyes and ears’ to each unit .
The Units, of some 4 – 8 men, used concealed underground bunkers, called Operational Bases, housed in dense woodland, to carry out their role. These self- contained cells stored the latest weapons and a selection of explosives and enough food to last for 2 weeks. They were not expected to survive longer than this. It is thought that some 400 -500 such Bases were constructed across the country. Our local Base was built in the Belle Vue plantation, north of Christchurch Road between Longham and West Parley, now part of Poor Common Nature Reserve. It consisted of a large chamber 12-15ft long with a vertical shaft at one end with a concealed trapdoor entrance and a 25-30ft escape tunnel at the other end. With the passing of the threat of invasion the Auxilliary Units were stood down in 1944. There was no public recognition at the time and details of the British Resistance Organisation only emerged with a book published in the 1960’s The Base on Poor Common was found after the war as parts of the entry points collapsed and was assumed to be an air raid shelter though it is well away from houses. It was used a children’s play den for some time and known as ‘Big Mac’. John Cullen

The Adventures of Nellie
The Dorset Publications Camper Van Stonehenge. What an atmospheric place. Did you know that henge literally means a prehistoric monument consisting of a circle of stone or wooden uprights? It is English in origin too. Well Nellie was very excited to take us to such a place. It is still unknown as to exactly what the stones were used for. Nellie’s imagination ran riot (it doesn’t take much) and she was worried that she might be ceremonially sacrificed to the Gods at dawn. I didn’t like to remind her that she was not that young anymore and probably a little more “experienced” than those maidens offered as a reward to the gods many years ago. I think Nellie still thinks she is in her early twenties, but in campervan terms it is more like her 80’s. We all get delusional from time to time don’t we and Nellie certainly was having one of those moments. Now Nellie is no historian, but she found out that the stones were erected about 5000 years ago! Wow that is amazing. No wonder Stonehenge is an international landmark and one of the world’s most famous prehistoric monuments. They are even older than Nellie! The stone circle was built in the late Neolithic period around 2500BC. This was an Era, a New Stone Age, and a development of human technology. I wonder how those people would react today with the technology we have now? Can you

Nellie admires the impressive visitor centre image how many people it would have taken to drag those stones into place, probably on rolling wood and a pulley system? Nellie was impressed. Steve gave it his best shot, but that stone did not move as you can see! The day we arrived, a beautiful sunny day, it was busy but not as busy as I imagine in the summer months. There were many many foreign visitors which really highlighted how popular and well known our wonderful monument is. Standing in the queue we were asked if we were Heritage members? It may be a good sales pitch, but it did make sense to join, as one more historic trip to one of their many sites and we will have paid for the membership. Us Brits like a bargain don’t we. The money is used for a good cause too and Nellie always likes to help where she can. So, as a family, we became Heritage members. Hayden did point out, in his very serious, ‘old head on young shoulders’ manner that we should use it and not waste what we had bought… as we have done before. Very sensible. I am sure you have never done that. As newly fledged English Heritage Members (it sounds good doesn’t it) we were also given useful, informative headsets giving lots of history while we walked around. All included in the price.

39 As soon as you get off the very well laid out bus ride to the site itself you feel something very atmospheric and mystical about the whole area. Nellie was particularly taken with the Heel Stone which sits outside of the circle a little distance away. It is rugged, made of sandstone and somewhat resembles an old man bending slightly. The sun rises from him every day. Fascinating. You could envisage all his wisdom gained over thousands of years, all his sightings and learning. This stone commanded respect. The stretch of English rolling countryside and feeling of space can really set those creative and imaginative juices flowing. Were there people from outer space who knew about these stones? Nellie got the impression there was The Heel much more ‘out there’. Stone The whole expanse of land and sky lent itself to daydreaming and pondering the meaning of life, where we came from, are there others, what will happen to us? Many were sitting gazing up to the sky. Some were just having sandwiches. The stones of the central cluster, brought to the site about 2500 BC, are of two types – the larger sarsens (sandstone) and the smaller bluestones. The sarsens were erected in two concentric arrangements and there is something about the layout,

The Corney-stone Family? the carefully placed heavy lintels across the vertical stones that draw you in and make you wonder what they were all about. You can almost ‘see’ men in robes slowly putting one foot in front of another, head down, walking around the circle. The Blue Stones in the inner circle seem to have an ‘energy’ to them… or was Nellie just getting all carried away again? We know how easy that is! Then of course there are the burial mounds which all add to the atmosphere and age of this spiritually inspiring location. In the museum there are skeletons from that time. With today’s technology, it is possible to know what these people ate, how old they were and what they did for a living. Incredible. The whole day was fascinating. All in all, Stonehenge is for those who wish to have some spiritual enlightenment, those who love our wonderful English rolling countryside or those who just like to have a family day out. Nellie was delighted that she visited and very glad she was not sacrificed to the Gods. The English Heritage have many places to visit and I am sure we will have fun finding other locations to visit and ponder over. We did end the day with some good retail therapy at the Wilton Shopping Village just a few miles away… to bring us back down to Earth. It was a good excuse of course. SPECTREK – recycling your specs Wimborne and Ferndown Lions, along with other Lions clubs, have been collecting unwanted pairs of specs which are then refurbished, cleaned and graded and prepared for distribution in third world countries where eye care is often unavailable and lens making facilities are non-existent. Over the years Lions in the UK Southern Region have collected nearly 3 million pairs.
This year Wimborne and Ferndown Lions themselves have collected 5,900 pairs and the total assembled from our area was 22,482 pairs.
Bournemouth, Southbourne and Boscombe, Christchurch, Lymington and Brockenhurst, Poole and Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Clubs all contributed. The club would like to thank the local opticians and doctor’s surgeries who have contributed to the collecting process. On Your Plot Courgettes
There are not many vegetables that are as rewarding, and easy to grow, as courgettes. Now is a great time to get them started, they’ll pop up quickly and soon be supplying you with more tasty courgettes than you know what to do with!
Jobs for May :-
• Keep on earthing up your potatoes to prevent the tubers from turning green. • If you’re planted peas don’t forget that they’ll need some support from sticks or netting that they can climb up. • With snow in April you’ll probably need to catch up with sowing crops that it was too cold for last month. • As the risk of frost passes, tender crops such as tomatoes or peppers can either be planted out, or on into grow bags. • Start winter greens such as cabbages, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts in a seedbed for transplanting to their final positions later.
If you’ve lost seedlings or had trouble getting them started with all the cold weather don’t forget that you can always buy plants that have already been started. Buying young plants in is a great way to experiment with different varieties too - with so many types of tomato available it’s more fun to have several plants, each of different kinds, than half a dozen all the same. There’s a good plant stand at the monthly farmers market, and several garden centres or local growers nearby. May is the time to start off that wonderfully easy vegetable - the courgette. If you’ve never grown courgettes before then I can highly recommend it as they give such a high yield from even just a couple of plants. In fact that would be my main advice - don’t be tempted to grow too many or you’ll be inundated! Plant the seeds undercover or on a windowsill from the beginning of the month. Put two seeds to a pot, laying them on their sides and covering with about 1” of compost. They usually germinate in a week to ten days and grow
pretty rapidly. Remove the weaker of the seedlings (I always feel guilty when I do this! If it looks good I re-pot it). When the seedlings have four to 6 leaves start to harden off by placing outside during the day. Plant out after all risk of frost has passed. You can also start courgettes outside, directly into the bed in which they’ll grow but I’d wait until later in the month when the soil is a bit warmer. The plants will grow quickly, producing exotic looking yellow flowers (look out for recipes for the flowers too). For maximum yields the plants should be harvested regularly. Tiny courgettes are very tasty, and don’t be tempted too turn your back on the plants for too long as they grow large at an amazing rate! Be careful with watering when seedlings as the stems can rot, but they’ll need plenty of water once they have grown. If you’re short of space courgettes can be grown in grow bags, planting two to a bag. With summer in mind, don’t forget to keep planting your salad crops. As well as the traditional lettuce there are a host of other salad leaves that can be grown, and it’s usually possible to buy packets of mixed salad seeds. Get in the habit of planting some at least once a fortnight - use some of the leaves to cut and come again for tasty fresh salad, transplanting some lettuces outside and allowing them to grow on to full size. If you planted beetroot seeds out in March or April the chances are that they’ll have suffered with the very cold weather that we had last month. Another row sown now may well give you much better results. Fancy your own, home grown, Brussels sprouts with Christmas dinner? They need quite a long growing time, so think about starting them around now.

Junior Leaders Ghana Expedition 2017 A group of ten Qualified Junior Leaders has been selected to travel to Ghana on a 3 week JTYAF funded volunteering expedition working with the locally based charity Village by Village. They will be rebuilding a Primary School in the remote rural village of Obom, in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The school will draw in pupils from the village of Obom and many smaller surrounding hamlets, meaning that its effect will be magnified. Building a school in a remote community does not just improve reading, writing and maths but will also educate the children of Obom (and therefore their families) about the importance of hands washing, and
avoiding the causes of malaria, cholera, typhoid and diarrhoea among other diseases. We wish them all the very best for what is certain to be a life changing experience.
Junior Leaders raise over £20,000 for the JTYAF A fundraising activity for the JTYAF forms part of the Air Cadet Junior Leaders Course and their qualification of Leadership and Management Level 2 award in Team Leading. The Cadets were not short of imaginative ideas when it came to fundraising events, with body waxing, bag-packing, and numerous physical challenges from the Fan Dance, Marathons, Triathlons to a 200 mile cycle ride, being just a few of the
activities organised to raise money for John’s Foundation. To raise £20,000 is an incredible achievement and this takes the total amount raised by Junior Leaders since 2010 to an unbelievable £115,000!! We are are continually inspired by the the dedication and commitment of these outstanding young people and we can’t thank them enough for their support.

John Young ‘pricked’ as The High Sheriff for Dorset 2017/18 John Young made his declaration of office as The High Sheriff for Dorset for 2017/18 at a special ceremony at Blandford’s old town hall in the Corn Exchange on Friday March 8th. Each year a new High Sheriff is appointed and makes a public declaration of his loyalty to the Queen to start his shreival year. The High Sheriff supports the judiciary and the Crown and actively lends support and encouragement to crime prevention agencies, the emergency services and to the voluntary sector. During the ceremony, the former High Sheriff, Sir Philip Williams, presented the Key of the Poole Town Gaol to the New High Sheriff. Mrs Katharine Jones, partner at Humphries Kirk LLP, was appointed Under Sheriff for the sixth year. The Under Sheriff supports and
advises the High Sheriff in a legal capacity. The Office of High Sheriff is an independent, non-political royal appointment for a single year. The origins of the office date back to Saxon times, when the ‘Shire Reeve’ was responsible to the king for the maintenance of law and order within the county, and for the collection and return of taxes owed to the Crown. Today, there are 55 High Sheriffs serving the counties of England and Wales each year. The High Sheriff is selected or ‘pricked’ from the List of Sheriffs for England and Wales and is carried out on a voluntary basis with no part of the expense falling on the public purse. New 2017 Honda Civic By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk
The Honda Civic has been around forever. It’s one of those Japanese brands that has never faded away or changed into anything else, and it’s remarkable to think it’s been on our roads since 1972. The 2017 Civic is the 10th generation of the model, and Honda claims it wanted to bring back the essence of a practical, yet entertaining vehicle to drive. To do this, the firm has spent time re-engineering this fresh Civic from top to toe. The all-new Honda Civic marks the introduction of two petrol units – a 1.0-litre three-cylinder ‘VTEC Turbo’ and a 1.5-litre fourcylinder power plant. The 1.0-litre yields 129PS, and will do 55mpg, while the 1.5-litre produces 182PS and 48mpg of fuel economy. Undoubtedly, the tenth incarnation of the Civic is an improvement over the last model, handling well on the test route that we took it out on around Barcelona in Spain. And the new power units – of which we drove the 1.5-litre variant – are first-rate, with lots of keen delivery, although the 1.5 i-VTEC Turbo Sport is not as potent as its athletic body suggests. The new ‘VTEC Turbo’ engine can be joined to a CVT automatic gearbox, but we’d recommend trying the six-speed manual gearbox as it feels excellent in the hand and gratifying to work with. It’s also to the Civic’s credit that it stays hushed and refined, regardless of the flashy undercurrent. The design of the all-new Honda Civic has changed. The exiting model is rounder, but the new Civic is like a compact saloon. It looks wider and smoother around the nose area, and the rear has an angular, level shape. Inside, the split-dash has been replaced by a smarter design – reminiscent of the lovely 90’s Honda dashboard layouts. This is a nod to an age when the Japanese automaker made some of its best cars.
The 2017 Honda Civic will be made in Swindon, a factory that has turned out well-built cars for some time now. The British plant will be constructing the model not just for the UK, but for the whole world. This is the inaugural ‘global’ Civic, meaning it’s being made with no specific changes for regions, other than the obvious adaptations for left and right-hand drive markets. Topping the features of the new Civic is Honda’s ‘Connect’ infotainment unit, which is companionable with Android Auto and Apple Car Play operating systems. The other headliner, in terms of kit, is Honda’s safety technology bundle, known as ‘Sensing’. It merges several bits of tech to keep you safe and sound. Features include lane keeping assistant, forward collision warning adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition. Due to changes to the structure of the Civic, the ‘Magic Seats’ that made for simple loading of big objects are now absent. Despite this, the boot still holds a notable 478-litres, so it is by no means an issue. Honda has announced the price-tag of its up-to-date Civic, and it will start from £18,335 increasing to £27,295, depending on which trim level you want. The all-new Honda Civic is a great effort from the Japanese firm, and brings it right into serious competition with hardcore rivals like Ford’s Focus and VW’s Golf. The way the tenth-generation Civic looks, feels, and goes means the opposition should be worried. Now we must wait for the diesel and the ultra-hot Type R to make their entrance..
