West Parley Neighbour Car 1,000th Trip On Friday 17th April, Elizabeth Chinn from New Road, West Parley was taken to the Salvation Army lunch club in Winton, where she enjoyed some company with like-minded people and a very appetising lunch.

On her return home she was greeted

by Kate Ward (Chairman), Clive Butcher (Co-ordinator and Derek Kearey (Treasurer) of West Parley Neighbour Car scheme to celebrate that she was the one thousandth trip undertaken by the scheme since its formation in September 2013.

Elizabeth was delighted to receive a very pretty plant to mark the occasion.

The scheme operates for West Parley residents only over the age of 55 who are unable to get out and about and provides a lifeline to take them to

hospitals, doctor’s surgeries and other health care services as well as social visits to clubs in the area.

Parish Elections

Seven existing councillors have put their names forward to continue as Parish Councillors after May. As there are 11 places there will not be an election here.

The vacancies will be filled by co-option from June.

Cllr. John Cullen has been Chair of the Parish Council for the last 2 years but will be stepping down from May though continuing to give of his time and expertise as a member of the PC.

Annual Parish Meeting

This was held in the Memorial Hall on 24th April. Guest speaker Kate Ward spoke about the success of the Neighbourcar scheme and of the hopes that more volunteer drivers would come forward so that more members of our community will benefit in the future. The 50 people who attended raised some good points in the discussions that followed on from the Parish Council’s reports and a number of actions are proposed as a result.

Bournemouth 7s Festival

This year’s festival is from 22nd to 25th May. Organisers have made great efforts to minimise the impact on West Parley with additional policing on site and up to Parley Cross as well as local security and litter patrols so we hope that this year’s event will pass off without too many problems.

We are dependent on the direction of the wind as to how many of us are affected by the noise from the music but if any residents have any problems with what is happening they can phone the event Control Room on 01202 611272 who will deal with any issues.

The Parish Council does get details of any incidents at the site and complaints are fortunately very few in number.

West Parley in Bloom

Good news for the front and back garden competitions; these will be judged during the week commencing 27th July. This is a couple of weeks later than last year and having advance warning should help all you gardeners with your preparations!

Entry forms are available from Cllr. Pat Couper – contact details below.

The S&SE in Bloom competition which the village enters, will be judged on 7th July so lots of volunteers are needed to make sure we are all spick and span for that day. Some additional blue boxes will be in situ ready for planting of our summer displays later in May. Could you adopt a blue box, just to keep it weeded and dead headed? If you have a suitable site near you the volunteers would be happy to make additional boxes.

Sharing our Heritage

Year 3 (ie 7 and 8 year olds) at Parley First School have been studying the history and geography of their local area.

In their English lessons they drafted and wrote letters in a fairly formal style to ask the Parish Council questions that they would like answered. Their teachers also

A wonderful social event, formerly known as the ‘Big Lunch’, is to take place at Parley Country Club on Sunday 7th June. Look out for information locally and online as timings and other details are not available at the time of going to press, but you can be sure of fantastic fun and great food for all the family!

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY invited a member of the PC to talk to the children so Cllr. Chrissie Davies, with invaluable help from Cllr. John Cullen, gave a presentation to each class in turn starting at the Stone Age and finishing about 100 years ago when New Road and the bridge were constructed (4500 years in half an hour!) It was clear that the children had done an excellent job of research and were quite knowledgeable but they were also very interested and full of questions as well as being most attentive audiences.

Dorset Partnership for Older People Programme (POPP) This scheme is designed to provide free, impartial and confidential information and help to any resident over 50 years of age.

The contacts are called ‘Wayfinders’ and West Parley’s Wayfinder is Hilary Moody.

My ex-wife has stopped me from seeing my children. I have been told that before I can issue an application at court to obtain a Child Arrangement Order I must enter into mediation. Is this correct?

If you attempt to make a family application without attending a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting and you do not qualify for an exemption your application will be returned by the court.

From 22 April 2014 under the Children's and Families Bill 2014 it became mandatory that before an individual can make a family application to the court they must attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAMS) unless they are exempt. Exemptions include domestic violence, child protection concerns, urgency, attendance at a previous mediation Information or assessment meeting, existing proceedings, disability, imprisonment or you live abroad and only in specified circumstances in each instance.

A Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting is usually conducted as a one to one meeting with a qualified mediator, your ex-wife will be invited to attend a separate meeting. The mediator will advise you upon the process of mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution, they will also assess the suitability of your issue.

Mediation itself is voluntary, there is no legal obligation upon you to attend. However, you may find your legal representative and/or the Court will encourage you to do so.

Pilgrimages from West Parley On the left doorpost of the Saxon entrance to All Saints Church in West Parley there is a faint impression of a large cross carved in to the stone. It has been suggested that this has been carved by Christian pilgrims leaving from and returning to the Church.

A pilgrimage is a journey to a holy place or shrine undertaken as a spiritual quest to obtain supernatural help or as a form of penance for sins. The first pilgrimages, during the Crusades, were to the Holy Land but it was common for later medieval people to make a pilgrimage close to home, visiting sites associated with Christian Saints and martyrs, holy relics or places where there had been apparitions of the Virgin Mary.

One of the most popular destinations in the medieval era was to Walsingham, in Norfolk. Many took a pilgrimage to Canterbury Cathedral, to visit the site of the murder of Thomas a Becket in 1170.

This journey was immortalised and popularised in Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’, written about 1390.

All Saints Church, West Parley The Dissolution of the Monasteries in the late 1530s effectively ended the custom of pilgrimage in England.

A pilgrim leaving West Parley on the route to Canterbury would cross the open heathland north of the village and use the bridge at Palmers Ford to journey via Burley and Cadnam on to Winchester and along the tracks close to the North Downs all the way to Canterbury. Though the paths are now called the Pilgrims Way, this name is only found on maps from the 1850s.

The journeys were difficult. Not only were the road conditions awful, but pilgrims were known to carry money and were easy prey for local thieves so they often set out in groups for protection and travelled short distances from village to village with others.

Until the mid C16 there were only about 100 people living in West Parley and Dudsbury hamlets and it is very likely that Poole, being by far the largest local town, was the start point for many pilgrims whose journey passed through West Parley on their way east.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Nellie loves Poole! We have so much to do on our doorstep here in Dorset. There are plenty of exciting activities for all ages, as well as miles of glorious beaches, just around the corner, in our beautiful town of Bournemouth!

Poole Quay is a vibrant place. There is much history, fantastic old buildings and many good restaurants and cafes for a coffee break, or even a full seafood meal.

So yes, Nellie loves to travel to Poole.

She knows that many of you will be very familiar with the sights and sounds of our wonderful seaside location but she wanted to tell you of her recent exciting trip out and all that she saw.

The Sunseeker boats! Oh boy do they look magnificent. We are lucky enough to have Sunseeker based right here in Poole. It is in fact the flagship dealership for new and pre-owned Sunseeker boats and luxury motor yachts. These yachts make Nellie’s mouth water. They give the whole place a sense of wealth, extravagance… and how the other half live! Oh well, maybe not this lifetime but they are great to see anyway.

The Pleasure boats! Now these are more like it. Nellie can afford this. Though she is rather too large to actually step on board.

(She really does need to go on a diet… again!). Brownsea Island is where these boats take you, as well as some trips to Wareham, Swanage and Old Harry Rocks, so for anyone wanting to have a pleasurable trip around the harbour, take in our glorious scenery, have a coffee on board and generally ‘while away the day’, this is for you! It is also for children as they usually love the sea and it is pretty exciting to watch the land move further and further away.

Brownsea Island, which is magnificently set in Poole Harbour with spectacular views over the Purbecks is owned by the National Trust. Lord Baden Powell’s statue salutes you as you set off for ‘his scout’s island’. Our famous, rare, red squirrels can be spotted here so those with a good camera could get some amazing photos.

There is also a café as well as a hotel, but only those lucky enough to work for the John Lewis Partnership can stay here, as it is owned by them. The data I have is that there is a long waiting list!

39 Back on the Quay, there are haunted pubs! The King Charles Pub dates all the way back to the 1300s when it was a wool house! Incredible. The Custom House, now a wonderful place to sit and have a coffee or meal, is famous for the smuggling episode some 250 years ago when 30 ‘savage’ smugglers forced there way in and stole 2 ton of tea. Those were the days…

There is even an old prison, called Fish Street Gaol. Can you find it? Continuing past the Georgian House, Hotel du Vin, there are some very old Almshouses (a house founded by charity, offering accommodation for poor people) dating back to Henry V. In fact, if local history is your interest then the Poole Museum also houses the Local History Centre. It is based in the historic Town Cellars, where you can learn more about the history of Poole and it’s people. It is a fascinating place to visit, all free of charge and Nellie highly recommends it.

For children on the quay there are amusement arcades, an illuminated pirate, crazy golf course which is indoors, above the amusement arcade, so ideal if the weather is not so good… and plenty of ice cream sellers!

We love Banana Wharf for lunch. The views are perfect, whether the weather is good or bad, so do mention Nellie to the manager there and give him a big “Hello” from Dorset Publications!

One last thing, the shops. Nellie loves “Pavers”, the shoe shop, and has more shoes than she needs, or even her cupboards can store, but hey that’s girls for you. We are well known for it! There is also the nationally and even internationally famous Poole Pottery. The large, open plan shop is great to look around, buy Birthday presents, gifts with “Poole” on them for those out of town, or just a special something for yourself. There is also a place for children to paint a pot themselves. Ideal for Grandma or Grandad.

So, do take a day out to our wonderful town of Poole. It has a lot to offer for all ‘shapes and sizes’, all weathers and any time of the year. Nellie hopes you find something new and exciting.

Having been the podiatrist on board the Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise liner and also having worked within the NHS in a variety of roles specialising in diabetes high risk clinics, biomechanical clinics and specialised nail surgery clinics, Catherine Ranger brings a wealth of experience to Ferndown.

Charity Bowls Evening Monday 11th May Organised by Rotary Club of Parley Fancy rolling up to the Knyveton Gardens Bowling Club (KGBC) after work on Monday 11th May? If you do, you’re assured of a great evening out with a little mild exercise (some bowling), a bite to eat (buffet meal included) and perhaps a drink or two (completely optional); the KGBC licensed bar will be open to nonmembers.

Never played bowls before? Not a problem. You’ll be made very welcome and even given some basic instruction in ‘how-to-bowl’. All this is part of a charity fund-raising event organised jointly between KGBC and the Rotary Club of Parley. It’s to help Lewis Brimble participate in the World Transplant Games later this year. So who exactly is Lewis Brimble...?

Lewis, now 14, was diagnosed with MPGN Type 2 and kidney failure four years ago. He has undergone treatment for his condition ever since, including a kidney transfer from his Mum. As well as playing bowls to a high standard, Lewis is a Multi Medal winner at the UK Transplant Games and has been selected to represent Team GB at the World Transplant Games in Argentina this August. But he has to raise a total of £6,000 towards making this trip. To help Lewis get there, KGBC has adopted Lewis as their President’s Charity for 2015.

The Rotary Club of Parley has already made a pledge to support Lewis and has now joined forces with KGBC to run this event to add to their donation. You can be part of this good work for the astonishingly low contribution of £12.50.

This includes your bowling (6pm till dusk) and your buffet meal afterwards. Any beverages you consume are extra, as you would probably guess. Who knows?

You might enjoy your evening of bowling so much that you would like to give it another go later this summer. A whole new, and healthy, leisure experience awaits you...

You’ll find Knyveton Gardens Bowling Club at Frances Road, Bournemouth, BH1 3RY. The evening’s play starts at 6pm. The closer you can arrive to that time, the more bowling you will get in.
