Dorset’s double photographic triumph comes to Moors Valley County Park The national photography exhibition, Take a View – Landscape Photographer of the Year opens at East Dorset’s Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood on 28th May. Always a stunning show, this year’s exhibition is sure to generate strong local interest as the overall winning shot not only depicts a Dorset scene but was also taken by a Dorset photographer.

Gillingham’s Antony Spencer is this year’s Landscape Photographer of the Year. He was awarded the prestigious title for his winning shot ‘Winter Mist at Corfe Castle, Dorset’ which captures the early morning magic surrounding the castle ruins.

Antony is the fourth holder of this prestigious title and the first overall winner from Dorset. His winning photograph will now take pride of place at the Moors Valley Country Park exhibition, amongst 100 other winning and commended images. These were selected from thousands of entries to represent the very best landscape photography in the UK. A true testament to local talent, the work of nine local photographers is included in the exhibition.

Other local images feature a misty sunrise on the river at Wareham, Colmer’s Hill at Symondsbury, The Blackmore Vale, the old pier at Swanage, offseason at West Bay, pylons in the Marshwood Vale and Buckland Rings near Lymington. Every photograph attests to the beauty of the local countryside, while many also reveal a new perspective on an iconic image.

“I have been photographing the beautiful county of Dorset for the last five years and even now the Dorset landscape inspires and excites me as much as ever,” said Antony. “I can't think of a more stunning area to live in and to be able to call home.

With such a diverse landscape and coastline, Dorset is up there with any other area in the country for jaw-dropping natural beauty.”

The 'Take a view' - Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, is the brainchild of Charlie Waite, internationally acclaimed landscape photographer and another Dorset resident. His pivotal role in regenerating interest in landscape photography includes the creation of this prestigious competition

with a total prize fund of over £20,000, an exhibition at the National Theatre and publication of a full-colour book of the best entries.

“We are delighted that so many of this year’s photographs not only depict local scenes but have been taken by local photographers who know and love the area,” said Katie Davies, Countryside Interpretation Ranger at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest. “It’s impossible not to be impressed by such a wonderful collection of powerful images and the glorious landscape they represent – especially when so much of it is right on your doorstep!”

The exhibition is in the Visitor Centre at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest from 28th May – 10th July 2010. It can be seen between 9:00am and 5:00 pm daily and entrance is free although car parking charges do apply within the Park.

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home.

Waggy Tails Rescue now has an Animal Rescue Centre (ARC) which is a detached house at Canford Magna. If planning permission is granted we will build heated cabins for each dog, a vetinary clinic will be on site for the foster dogs as will 24 hour staff for their welfare. AN EVENING WITH BALL AND SOCKET With songs of gentle satire inspired by Flanders and Swann

Ball and Socket [also known as David Kemp and Gerald Ward] have been entertaining erudite audiences for nearly 30 years.

They have been described as a Flanders and Swann Tribute Band; they comprise two chaps who sing with a keyboard or two, performing some well known and some less well known songs by Flanders and Swann as well as songs from a variety of other sources. The audience can look forward to a programme that offers a varied and humorous evening with attempts at local and topical relevance, updating words as appropriate, including some opportunities to join in.

The evening should be very entertaining and will also include a light buffet.

Blind Club Celebrates Anniversary The local club for the Blind and Partially Sighted recently celebrated its 26th anniversary when 40 members enjoyed party games and a celebration tea at the Girl Guide hall in Ferndown.

Blind and Partially Sighted persons from the surrounding areas regularly meet for a social afternoon on alternate Tuesdays. The meetings are organised by volunteers, supported crucially by volunteer drivers without whom our Members would not be able to travel.

We are in need of some additional drivers in the Ferndown, Wimborne, West Moors, Verwood, and Ashley Heath areas who could give a couple of hours each fortnight, or just occasionally to help us out as a relief driver.

Lights… Camera… Action! - Take 5 Arts & Entertainment News Art4All News Over 200 local residents and civic dignitaries gathered in Millennium Park, Ferndown despite the rain, to watch the town mayor, Councillor Jean Read unveil the Memorial and thank all those people who had given their time to help create the new Ferndown Memorial and Garden of Memories. Members of a dozen or so local families who had requested a special commemorative stone to remember their loved ones were also present and listened as Ex Mayor Cllr Lesley Dedman described how the town was leading the way in giving recognition to those who had served the community. During the ceremony, John Thornton’s father, Peter Thornton, spoke of his son’s service to his country and also the local community and felt John would have been immensely proud to be honoured in the new Memorial to Local Heroes.

Memorial designer, Gerry Clarke spoke of his vision to create a quiet place for residents to come and remember their friends, families and loved ones and went on to explain how he had adapted a quotation from Winston Churchill “We make a living by what we earn, we make a life by what we give” as a motto.

A number of local companies and organisations generously gave their help and support, including:- Knoll Gardens, Haskins, Banyards, Tiegla Tiles, Phoenix Marble, Eco, Dorset Stone & Gravel, Epoxy Resins and the Ferndown Rotary Club.

The beginning of April also saw local Dorset MP, Christopher Chope officially open the Harmont Wood site along the Wimborne Road. This is an area that has been cleared by a team from Ferndown in Bloom and provides a new recreational space for dog walkers and children to discover the local flora and fauna in a natural woodland environment. Watch out for the carved wooden Archway that Art4All in Ferndown will be installing at the entrance and the innovative new floating Sculpture on the small pond. This month sees the return of Welsh wood carving wizard, Chris Wood who will be carving some more animal figures for young children to play on at the Mum’s waiting area opposite Ferndown Middle School in Peter Grant Way.
