Welcome...

The Ferndown & West Parley Directory

Dear Ferndown & West Parley residents, Wow this year is flying by. Easter is earlier than usual Edition 119 so I hope you enjoy a break and can make the most of any family time. I managed to drive Nellie... for the first time! What an experience that was and you can read all about it on pages 38 and 39. I am gearing up for the summer and lots of trips out, Debbie & Stephen Corney so watch this space. with our son Hayden There is a lot happening in our very special town of Ferndown & West Parley. The John Thornton Trust is continuing to help local students of Ferndown Upper School. Very well done! The West Parley Parish Council have various activities, clubs and dates for your diary, so please lend a hand and join in where you can. How about trying a new hobby and join the Dorset Woodturners Association described on page 18? Harold G Walker give you some good advice about inheritance tax on page 22. John Cullen answers the question of a Prisoners of War Camp in West Parley, on page 26. Martin Lewis has some great money saving ideas. I had no idea about how to save like that on train tickets! The Pensioners Club provide a cheque to Lewis Manning. Dream Doors have had a great year. Slimming World will help you lose and there are March Hares hopping about! So lots to read and learn. I hope you enjoy. Next month we will be starting our very own “Local Celebrity of the Month”. This is your chance to “Tell me all about it!” I already have some interesting people to interview and am looking forward to promoting the good works and fascinating lives of the residents of Ferndown & West Parley. The lucky winner of the prize wordsearch last month was Bob Hodgson. Well done and I am sure you will enjoy your meal for two at The Kings Arms in Longham! Myself, Stephen, Hayden and Nellie would like to wish you a relaxing Easter break. Very Best Wishes,

JTYAF Awards at Ferndown Upper School 2016 The aim of the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation is to encourage and assist young people to achieve their ambitions. Whatever that ambition may be, we hope to help them to develop as individuals and inspire them to strive for success. The JTYAF has been supporting Ferndown Upper School, where John was a former pupil, since 2009 and over 220 students have now beneďŹ tted from bursaries and scholarships. The charity has also supported many whole school projects, ranging from refurbishment of the library to a Cyber Bullying Campaign. At the recent awards ceremony 40

students celebrated their success. They were presented with their JTYAF awards in front of guests and dignitaries including the Thornton family, local Mayors and Councillors and local MP Chris Chope. Bursaries were awarded to 37 students with 3 students receiving scholarships. The winners showed total commitment to their chosen activities and were extremely impressive during their interviews. One of the scholarships went to James who was spotted as a future talent at an Archery GB event. With the funding to help him to buy his own equipment he will be a step closer to his ambition of achieving success at National Level.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Matt Stensel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Ferndown, West Parley and the surrounding area 0DWW LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW KLV approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth

is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just

goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Matt a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Wildlife News

Talking about Wildlife...

The March Hare The sight of a brown Hare, poised for action at any moment, is a wonderful thing, and for many is something they’d like to tick off their wildlife bucket list. In the South West, a quarter of the estimated 800,000 population of Hares can be found. Here in Dorset we are blessed with a few hotspots for Hare watching, including Chesil Beach, Cranborne Chase and the Cerne Valley. If you are lucky enough to see one, the chances are it won’t stay around for long. With the ability to run up to speeds of 45mph these sprightly and athletic animals are well-equipped for survival in harsh habitats, which is often in the open, exposed to the elements. In addition to being the UK’s fastest land mammal, they also have near-360 degree vision. One thing Hares are well known for is their ‘boxing’ abilities during the breeding season. This display of aggression, which is usually females denying persistent partners, can be observed in spring and summer. The frenzied display is the reason they’ve earned their reputation ‘mad as a March hare’.

However, Hare numbers are sadly dwindling, with a 75% decline in their populations since the Second World War. There are many complex reasons for this decline, including intensification of agriculture and changes in the patterns of land use. Their ideal habitat is grassland and arable areas, and rather than burrowing like rabbits, they create shallow forms in the grass, and use woods, hedges or fields, where they rest during the day. However when disturbed they can be seen bounding across fields, using their powerful hind legs to propel them forwards, often in a zigzag pattern! Whilst Hares can be seen all year round, as they don’t hibernate, it is often easier to see them in the early morning and late evening this time of year, due to lack of foliage in the landscape. Whilst in times gone by it was considered ‘bad luck’ for a hare to cross your path, seeing a Hare is a rare and wonderful sight – just make sure you’re quick with your camera if you want to capture the moment. By Sally Welbourne

Hare standing to attention Photo: John Palmer

Passed down through centuries through storytelling, Hares have also featured in mythologies around the world. In Britain, Hares are prevalent in folk tales, with women shape-shifting into hares, leading men or hunting dogs astray!

Work by Parley volunteers

The clearance in Parley Wood is going well and areas have been opened up to encourage a larger range of natural flora to grow. The next task is a new boardwalk on the edge of Parley Common to allow drier access to this unique habitat. All work is done by volunteers with advice from specialists from Moors Valley. Overhanging trees on New Road and Christchurch Road are monitored and cut back as they get in the way of people using the pavements and are particularly hazardous for horse-riders. Potential volunteers can offer their services to Cllr John Dinsdale: 01202 872974 cllr.j.dinsdale@westparley-pc. gov.uk. Litter-picking is another activity that goes on quietly happening. Cllr Diana Penwill, who organises this could always do with more litter pick volunteers. Tools are supplied and sacks are currently given for those covering the four main roads from Parley Cross. Contact her on cllr.d.penwill@westparley-pc.gov.uk Leaflet deliveries: The Parish newsletter comes out twice a year and is delivered to every household. If you could help with this task please contact Marianne Parker direct on 01202 871487. If you did not receive the last newsletter in Jan/Feb please let her know.

Community Guide

We have had this ‘on the back burner’ for quite some time and, thanks to Cllr Kay Bundy, it is moving forward again. If anyone, especially newer residents,

Boardward to Parley Common has ideas about what would be useful to see in a guide for West Parley, she would be glad to hear from you. She can be contacted on 07887 351510 or cllr.k.bundy@westparley-pc.gov.uk.

Gardening Club

The gardening club started its year with very interesting talks by Alisdaire Urquart, a plants person from Haskins garden centre, and John Cullen, WPPC chairman, on the History and Heritage of West Parley. Future speakers include Totty the bee keeper, Chris Evans head of Bournemouth parks, Jane Glover flower arranger and Martin Stewart of Stewart’s Garden Centres. This is a very informal and friendly club which meets at the Parley Sports/Country Club on the last Tuesday of each month at 7.30 in the evening. New members are always welcome. Membership fee is £10 per person for the year, or people can come as visitors for £2 per meeting. The contact is Cllr. Malcolm

Parley Lunch Club

This group meets at different venues on the second Wednesday of the month. Food and prices depend on the venue. Transport can usually be sorted. Venue and contact details are published in the What’s On page of the Stour and Avon advertiser the week in advance. Contact Hilary Moody via the answer machine 01202 896738 or email hlmoody79@ gmail.com.

Traffic

With the help of PACT we try to respond to residents’ concerns about problems but it can be very difficult to get practical solutions quickly as there is a very long waiting list at County and certain measures are under their control. We have been pleased to have Police Speedwatch checking rat-running speeders down Chine Walk recently and a short while ago they also covered people shooting down Elm Tree Walk, cutting through the slip road by the shops and out in to New Road heading towards Ensbury Bridge. Inevitably there have been ‘bumps’ by the shops and it is only a matter of time before a pedestrian is injured.

Food Banks

These have been placed in Tesco Parley Cross,Tesco Glenmoor Road and The Owls Nest pub from Monday 22nd of February, for three weeks. Thank you so much to all who have been donating items. Food is distributed to deserving people through The Trussell Trust at St Andrews Church, Kinson. Many people both women and men find themselves thrust into the situation of being a lone parent, with no income. Others lose their jobs, having financial commitments.

And increasingly more people are finding themselves in unavoidable debt. The last Parley food bank collection before Christmas collected over 250 items, for which St Andrews were hugely grateful. Unfortunately, the church has less to distribute at this time of year, so any donation however small is gratefully received. If you require further information, contact Cllr. Malcolm Plascott on 01202 950521.

New Parish Councillors

There are still a couple of vacancies and anyone who wishes to be considered for one of these should write to or email the Parish Clerk, Linda Leeding 07979 853697 or email enquiries@westparleypc.gov.uk.

Introducing... Dorset Woodturners Association We are an independent group of enthusiastic woodturners from all walks of life and at various levels of ability and experience. Our ages range from young to not so young. Membership is open to both women and men. We currently have a lady committee member. We have been established since July 1992. We have a Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary and Committee of six. We have, and abide by a simple constitution and we operate within adequately funded resources. We also have public liability insurance. A modest annual sub covers the cost. We do not categorise members as novices, intermediates, or experts, we regard everyone as a woodturner. We do not expect members to have a minimum inventory of equipment and we have a policy of no competitive turning between members. We pride ourselves in being a friendly group of people with a common interest in woodturning and an enthusiastic willingness to help and learn from one another. We arrange visits to places of interest, last summer to the

Axminster Tools and Machinery Factory & Distribution Centre and we are planning a visit to a Timber Yard at Hazelbury Bryan in the Spring. We hold 12 meetings a year. These are directly or indirectly related to woodturning. These meetings are mostly held on the first Wednesday of each month. We hold a partners evening dinner annually to which spouses, partners, friends and relatives are invited. Two or three times a year on a Saturday we invite professional woodturners of national repute to visit us for a whole day to give us demonstrations of woodturning techniques. Our regular meetings begin at 7.15 p.m. and finish about 9.45 p.m. These meetings are held in the Village Hall, Braeside Road, St Leonards. The pictures show professional Gary Rance demonstrating to us and one of our member’s work. For more information contact our Chairman, Andrew Wadman 01202 546563 or Secretary - Alex Wells 01202 233437 or 07759 663151 Email: alex@xelacraft.co.uk Why not try us out it is a fascinating and rewarding hobby. You will be made very welcome we always start with a cup of tea and a biscuit.

..providing the answers

to your legal questions

Every month the solicitors and lawyers at Harold G Walker will be providing answers to your questions about the law. Changes to Inheritance Tax At present everyone has a nil rate band (’NRB’) of £325,000 which can be left free of inheritance tax upon their death. If a person dies leaving all their assets to their spouse or civil partner, 100% of their nil rate band can be transferred to the surviving spouse. The rate is applied at the date of second death. When the second spouse or civil partner dies they can leave up to £650,000 of assets to whoever they wish, free of inheritance tax.

What is shared parental leave? Shared parental leave (‘SPL’) is a way for both parents to share leave and pay at the birth or adoption of a child. It applies to children who were expected to be born, or placed for adoption after the 5th April 2015. Parents do not have to be employees in order to be eligible to take part in the scheme. They must be ‘economically active’. To participate, the mother or primary adopter must either return to work or curtail their maternity or adoption leave or, where they are not entitled to leave, curtail their maternity or adoption pay or maternity allowance period. They must serve a curtailment notice at least eight weeks before the date on which the mother or primary adopter wishes their leave or pay entitlement to end. The mother/ primary adopter must serve either a notice of entitlement

From 2017 there will be an additional allowance for a deceased’s main residence when it is left to a direct descendant. From 2017 to 2018 this allowance will be £100,000 and increases at yearly intervals up to 2021 when it will be £175,000 for every person and thereafter it will continue to increase in line with the Consumer Price Index. This also applies where the deceased has either sold their main residence or downsized after July 2015. The cash proceeds of sale, up to the allowance limit, can be left to direct descendants free of tax. This additional allowance does not apply where an estate is worth over £2million and it is reduced by £1 for every £2 over that threshold. Like the standard nil rate band, the residence allowance can be transferred to the surviving spouse or civil partner. By 2021 a couple will have a joint NRB of £650,000 for all assets with a further £350,000 tax free allowance which applies only to their main property.

And intention to take SPL (see below), or a declaration that their partner has served such a notice. An employer that receives a notice of entitlement and intention to take SPL may request a copy of the child’s birth certificate or documents notifying the primary adopter that the child was to be placed with them, together with the name and address of the other parent’s employer. If you are expecting a baby and would like to consider applying for shared parental leave, or you are an employer and have received an application from an employee and are unsure how to deal with it, call us to arrange an appointment. Heritage News

Heritage: POW camp in Parley? Older residents had reported that there was a World War 2 Prisoner of War camp in West Parley yet a check in national archives shows no record. With the help of 2 local residents the facts have come to light. When the runway at Hurn was being built from 1939 a number of large wooden huts were put up locally to house some of the workers on the project. There were 6 huts in Matchams Lane close to the Avon Causeway and 6 in West Parley. The Parley huts were put on a vacant plot between Chine Walk and Cresent Walk. After the airfield construction finished in 1941 they were unused for some time but then were used to house a number of Italian former prisoners of war. There was no security fencing as Italy had surrendered in 1943. They used to work on the land locally, including the large Stewarts nursery at Parley Cross that had been turned over to a market garden, as was much of Parley, from the former rose growing. There were other prisoners of war locally. German prisoners were held at a camp at West Moors and were driven by truck along with Italians to each site where they were to work. Probably most of those saw local work as preferable to what they had been through and at the end of the War in 1945 a number did not want to return home, particularly if they were due to go back to East Germany, under Russian occupation at that time.

Some residents remember football matches between local teams and the former POWs, many of whom were still living in West Parley and West Moors till the early 1950’s. When not used for the former POWs the huts were occupied by local families. An aerial photo in the late 1940’s shows the whole area clearly with the huts in a corner of the plot and the rest open land. The huts were very basic with a single stove and beaten earth floor but they were still a place to live when there was such a severe shortage of housing. John Cullen

Money Saving Tips

Martin

LEWIS Cheap Trains, Drains & Automobiles Some folks drive a lot for various reasons be it business or personal, here a few tip to help cut the cost of travel. • Free tank of fuel via extreme couponing trick. If you’re planning a big spend at any one of 50+ retailers (including House of Fraser, Homebase and PC World), buy the gift card in Morrisons and you get 1p/litre off fuel per £10 spend. So £100 gets 10p off and £1,000ish gets a free tank. The real trick isn’t to use them as gifts, but that if you’re planning a big purchase in that store anyway, first pop into Morrisons and buy the gift card. Then a few days later, once it’s active, go and use it to buy your planned purchase, giving you a potentially whopping petrol discount. There’s a full list of retailers and more info at: www.morrisonsfuelsaver.co.uk. • Turn your heating down, but not off if you’re going away If it gets cold, no heating risks burst pipes. So much so that some insurers won’t cover you for damage if your home’s unoccupied for more than five days and you turned the heating off. The rule of thumb is keep it to a minimum 14 degrees. • Buying two tickets for one train journey can save you £100s Split ticketing makes about as much sense as Chewbacca, but it works. It’s where you buy tickets for a journey’s constituent parts separately to slash the price. It’s allowed by the conditions of carriage – the only rule is that the train must call at the stations you buy tickets for. For example, a single from Manchester to Cornwall costs £158, but the train stops at Cheltenham Spa. Buy a £52 ticket from Manchester to Cheltenham Spa, then a £58 one from there to Cornwall and the total’s £110. That’s the same train, the same time – possibly even the same seat. To help find if you can do this for your journey, use my free TicketySplit tool at mse.me/ticketysplit. As Justine tweeted me: “Genius - tickety split has just saved me £50, no effort, exact same journey.” • Cheap boiler cover - you don’t need to stick with your energy firm Boiler cover is a free market, yet energy firms like you to think you need to stick with them. You don’t. While British Gas charges £12/month, you may be able to get similar cover for as little as £6. My quick tips: a) Renters usually don’t need it, as their landlord’s likely responsible. Check.

b) Ensure you know what cover you need. Choose between boiler-only, the cheaper option that covers your boiler and its controls, or central heating cover, which includes full central heating cover on top (including radiators, pipes, etc). c) To find the cheapest, compare prices via uSwitch.com and add in Energyhelpline.com if you’ve time. • Get a year’s breakdown cover for £17. If your car has had trouble during the winter season, it can be costly to pay it back in the Spring. Thankfully, if you know what you’re doing you can get super cheap cover. There are four things you need to know: - If you’re renewing, haggle. 84% of AA and 76% of RAC customer who tried reported success. - If you’re new then for basic cover use a cashback site. A standard RAC policy is £28 online and an AA policy £35, but sites like Topcashback.co.uk and Quidco.com give around £10-£15 back so the effective cost to you is £18ish. This usually works, though do note the cashback isn’t 100% guaranteed. - If you have Tesco clubcard points you can swap them in for RAC cover, so £16 of vouchers gives you basic breakdown. - For full service, Autoaidbreakdown.co.uk is a pay and reclaim polcy for £42/year, which covers you and your spouse for home start, breakdown and onward travel. A local delivery firm is sent out, and you pay then send in receipts to get the cost back. • Do you know where your stopcock is? No nudge nudge wink wink needed. Everyone should know where their stopcock – mains water tap – is. Frozen pipe bursts create an average £4,000 of damage, made worse if you can’t find the off switch as your home floods. So be prepared. Under the kitchen sink’s a very common place. To locate yours, Thames Water has a helpful video at: thameswater.co.uk/help-and-advice/13526.htm • Can you find sub-£1/litre petrol? Petrol prices are now under £1/litre in some places, but the range is huge. Use Petrolprices.com to find your cheapest, nearest forecourt. The difference even within one post code is 10%. It’s an easy check to fill up on savings

Adventures of Nellie

The Adventures of Nellie

The Dorset Publications Camper Van Well, can you believe it but I have never driven Nellie! She has been a part of the family for three and a half years, and I have never sat in the driver’s seat. I am not usually a nervous driver and will get in any car to drive off with no worries at all. For some reason I have not reached to take the wheel and Stephen has done all the driving. Nellie is an old Japanese, ‘automatic’ girl and everything is backwards to what I know. Watching Stephen pull this lever, push that button and generally not drive anything like I drive my little Citroen (mind you has anyone seen me on the road?) had put me right off. I decided I was not to be beaten, and that I would finally sit in the driver’s seat and Nellie and I would drive off into the sunset together. So off we set for a car park in Brockenhurst... to practice. I was nervous I can tell you. I felt like I was going to an exam that I was totally unprepared for. Ever had that feeling? Hayden in the back was not much better, asking if I really wanted to do this? Some vote of confidence that was. So we arrived. Stephen got out and ceremoniously handed me the

Debbie in the driving seat! keys. I got down from my safe, highly respectable passenger’s seat and moved over.... to the driver’s seat. The first thing I needed to do was adjust the leg space as I was a foot short of the pedals. Not very helpful. I pulled the lever and lurched forward at speed, nearly shooting myself through the windscreen. Hayden found that highly amusing and burst out laughing. I think it was nervous hysteria. Stephen just stood there, smiling calmly while I tried to not look too embarrassed. Head held high in the air of course. So, the window washers are on the left not the right, the lights and indicators on the right not the left, there is no handbrake, no clutch and no gears. Easy, what was I worried about? It isn’t that different...

Then there is the question of the brakes which have to be coordinated with the position of the parking, driving and reversing lever. Oh what was I doing? Well I managed to move forward, slowly. I even managed to turn big old Nellie around and drive onto the small road but to my dismay it was cordoned off a little further down. Now I had to reverse into someone’s driveway. Suddenly a car appeared wanting to get into the very same driveway! It really is a wonder I am here to tell the tale at all. Carefully and calmly (well sort of) I did it! I reversed with not a damaged daffodil in sight, and we started moving forward again. I got back to the safe haven of the car park and stopped. Two horses were looking at me in a quizzical sort of way, wondering what all the fuss was about. I breathed a sigh of relief and asked Hayden if he was ok in the back. There was somewhat of a hesitation before a weak voice replied, “Er, yes...”

After a well deserved coffee & cake

Bemused horses look on... I wasn’t convinced and I think Nellie was feeling the strain too. Not to be put off I said I would drive us into Brockenhurst and we could have lunch there. Stephen continued to smile (I think it was a fi xed grin to get him through the moment) and agreed. We did arrive safely, all in one piece, and I have to say the coffee at The Buttery was just what I needed. Stephen too I think. I drove all the way home and despite stalling at the corner of Glenwood Road, where I managed to park next to the pavement and get poor old Nellie started again, it was an almost perfect drive. Hayden gave me a big cheer once I stopped the engine. I think he found the whole experience more scary than the ghost train at the fayre! So now I am a fully trained “Nellie driver” and it will be me who drives us to our next destination. Where will that be...? By Debbie Corney

Local slimmers lose one and a half ton! Super slimmers in West Parley and Ferndown have lost a whopping one and a half ton in weight - that;s the equivalent of 7 baby elephants! All together the 596 members of the local West Parley and Ferndown Slimming World groups are now 3278lb lighter than they were at the start of the year by following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan. It was created by the organisation’s team of expert nutritionists, which encourages them to fill up on satisfying foods such as pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, pulses and fruit and veg. Andrea Lucas from the St Marks, West Parley group has lost 2 stone 4lbs, dropping from a dress size 16 to a slinky size 10! She says: “Filling up on lots of satisfying foods means you’re never hungry so I’ve never felt as though I was on a diet. Before I joined Slimming World I thought losing weight meant going to the gym and counting calories. But now I know it’s about making healthier choices about food and becoming more active. “The support and inspiration we get from our Consultant Zoe has been integral to our success. Because she’s lost weight herself, she understands the ups and downs of slimming and can offer us help and advice based on

her own experience, without her I don’t think we’d have achieved nearly as much.” Local consultants Zoe, Rhonda, Emma and Rosemary are delighted that members have lost weight so beautifully. Zoe says: “It has made a big difference to their lives and to their whole families’ lives, and all of them are happier and healthier now. Some people who have lost big amounts of weight have probably even saved their lives. Every week we support and encourage each other and share tips and recipes, and on top of that we have a lot of fun! Slimming has never been more important, especially in an age where unfortunately weight related illnesses and obesity are at an all time high.”

Plant of the month Snowdrop

The first sight of a snowdrop is always such a treat. With their delicate drooping heads, rich green leaves and stems, they burst their way into the garden with a quiet vigour that brightens up even the gloomiest of corners. Snowdrops come in a variety of shapes and sizes but whichever type has bloomed you’ll be sure to identify it as a Snowdrop. Pick a few stems and pop the posy into an egg cup ‘vase’ - you’ll enjoy a beautiful sweet scent like honey in the room. They enjoy a well-drained spot in light shade similar to their natural woodland habitat.

Gardening Tips

On Your Plot Getting the upper hand Spring should really be on its way by the end of this month and there’ll be plenty of jobs to keep you busy on your plot. There’s nothing quite like sowing seeds and the thrill of watching those first tiny seedlings appearing just a week or two later. Weather permitting the soil should be warm enough to be sowing outdoors in March. Your new seedlings will need all the help that you can give them if they are to flourish so don’t forget the weeding and pest control too!

Jobs for March :-

• Prepare beds for sowing by raking level when the soil is dry enough. • Get a supply of containers and fill with compost ready for sowing (supermarket plastic trays containers are handy to reuse for this!) • Make sure you have all the seeds you need and sort them into the order that you’ll sow them in. • Plant first early potatoes later in the month. • Keep on top of the weeding and pest control. • Sow carrots, peas, parsnips, lettuce and radishes

There’s no doubt that the weather during the first part of the year lived up to our expectations of a month of extremes - with mild temperatures and homes and gardens hammered by incredible rainfall. Hopefully March should see the weather settling down and Spring truly starting to emerge. Most seed packets give you some guidelines as to which month/or months are best to sow in but personally I think that it’d be a lot more helpful if they gave a little information about the temperature required, not to mention just how long germination is likely to take. Soil temperatures of at least 6°C are needed for most seeds - if you don’t want to guess at this you can get a soil thermometer to check. Don’t forget that by using products such as fleece, or cloches, over your beds you can raise the temperature. Some seeds, such as parsnips, are notoriously slow to germinate taking up to 3 weeks for seedlings to appear - a good idea with slow starters like these is to sow quick growing crops such as radishes on either side of the row. This will

help mark the rows out until your parsnips appear and the radishes will quickly be grown and ready to harvest. Take note also of the depth that the different seeds should be sown at - too shallow and they’ll either blow away or be eaten by the birds, too deep and you may bury them alive! Try to space seeds evenly, though if you sow too many you can thin out the weaker seedlings after they appear. Do remember that with many crops it is better to sow just a few and then sow again in a few weeks time to avoid having too many ready to harvest all at once. Salad crops such as lettuce will bolt if left too long, and other vegetables which may have a short harvesting period can be enjoyed for much longer if you save the seed and sow a few in succession every few weeks. As the soil warms up for your new crops so it also warms up nicely for the weeds about now! For many people part of the attraction of growing your own is eating chemical free produce and organic methods of pest control will therefore be preferred. Little and often is best - take a quick walk around the veg patch each morning and hand pick any emerging weeds. Hoeing also works well and if you are careful not to let weeds set seed you’ll avoid a long-term problem. Of course the situation isn’t helped by the fact that your patch is likely to have large amounts of bare soil on it between widely spaced rows at this time of year. Some crops, such as potatoes will obligingly grow to ultimately block out the light and deter weeds, but if you’re really having problems then think about putting down a thick, organic, mulch to cover the bare soil. Slugs will also emerge to attack your young seedlings - there’s no end of organic ways to do battle from hand picking at night and beer traps to watering in nematodes. Strike early and gain the upper hand!
