Dear Ferndown & West Parley, Easter is coming up and hopefully some good weather! Do you have anything planned for the children? Maybe an Easter Egg Hunt or a family weekend away? Hayden, our son had his first over night cubs “Expedition” last week. A two hour hike in the dark, then a night in a tent with 3 friends. He arrived back exhausted after 3 hour hours sleep he told me. Funnily enough, where I thought he maybe cold out in the open he told me he was too hot, which is why he couldn’t sleep! I couldn’t believe it, that really surprised me. It turned out they were “camping” indoors!!

WEST PARLEY PARISH COUNCIL Core Strategy About 200 people turned out on a very cold night to let EDDC know, once again, that the massive housing plans for the village are unacceptable. There may have been forty weeks of ‘consultation’ but the residents’ concerns have never been addressed. Thanks are due to Kenny Pearce,on behalf of all the communities involved, for his outstanding organisation of the march.

District Cllrs views are beginning to change though. As expected the strategy was passed, but this time nearly a third of Cllrs refused to support it. But this is not the end of the story! We have engaged a

Bristol-based firm of experienced Planning Consultants to represent the village at the Public Inquiry which is expected in the summer.

Already we are busy working with them to brief them fully on local issues and facts so they can do their best job to ensure the views of Residents are properly heard by the Inspector.

Lunch Club As suggested in the Parish survey, a Lunch Club has been set up for local residents. It will take place every Wednesday at Parley Sports Club from 12 noon to 2pm. The chef will cook the meals as ordered and there will be a choice of menu. One, two or three courses, maximum cost £6.99 including tea or coffee.

Health Walks The guided walks have been well attended every week. They start at Parley Sports Club at 10 am and make much use of local footpaths.

A walk lasts about an hour then into the Club for coffee and chat afterwards. On your first visit you will need to fill in a form with a few health questions so don’t forget the reading glasses!

And on the subject of footpaths‌ Our annual survey is just starting and it would be helpful if any residents could report on the state of footpaths they use in the next two months. If problems, a photo and a location is useful, if all is well, a note to that effect is good.

Ferndown Rotarians launch young environmentalist contest BUDDING young environmentalists are being urged to enter a competition aimed at raising awareness of green issues. The Young Environmentalist Challenge Competition is the brainchild of the Rotary Club of Ferndown. Representatives from several schools joined Rotarians and sponsors for the launch held at Sembcorp Bournemouth Water's Longham Reservoirs.

Organiser Gerry Clarke said: "It's important to engage young people and make them aware of environmental issues. "This is a pilot project but, if successful, could become an annual competition."

Three age categories have been set for the contest which is sponsored by Sembcorp Bournemouth Water and Parley-based Eco Sustainable Solutions. The winners will receive Kindle Fire mini tablets with other prizes for the runners-up. The overall winner will also receive a fully paid trip to Dublin.

In the four to nine and nine to 13 age categories, entrants have to produce a sketch and site plan for a sustainable wildlife garden. The nine to 13 year olds also have to complete a general environmental questionnaire.

Green challenge: Competition organiser Gerry Clarke (centre) joins fellow members of the Rotary Club of Ferndown, sponsors and representatives from local schools to launch the Young Environmentalist Challenge Competition.

The 13 to 18 year olds have to complete one of three tasks: • Highlight a major environmental issue in Dorset, describe the problems associated with it and suggest solutions.

• Write a short speech and make a five minute Powerpoint presentation on an environmental issue for delivery at the next Earth Summit.

• Create a sketch and site plan for a small sustainable wildlife garden.

In addition, all entrants in the 13 to 18 age category must complete an environmental questionnaire.

The competition is open to schools in Ferndown and surrounding area. The closing date is April 22 and the results will be announced at an awards ceremony on June 15. Mr Clarke said: "The Rotary Club of Ferndown is twinned with Dublin North Rotary Club which is also holding a similar competition. Top chefs move on Two budding, young local chefs have won through to the next, the regional round of the Rotary Young Chef competition. They are now just one step away from the national final, the ultimate winner taking away a handsome cash prize plus a trip to the sun kissed olive groves of Italy Harry Gatehouse from Havant and Sian Davies from Brockenhurst took the top honours from a ‘kitchen’ of 15 competitors drawn from East Dorset, Hampshire, South Wiltshire and from as far afield as Guernsey.

Harry Gatehouse, 16, from Prospect School, Havant scooped the top prize, a voucher for £50.00, with his beautifully prepared dishes. They included a starter of scallop and crabmeat with tian, lemongrass and ginger sauce, followed by paupiette of plaice with spaghetti vegetables and saffron potatoes for the main, and a sweet of vanilla panacotta and poached pear adding the final delicious touch.

Sian Davies, 14, from Priestlands School, Lymington was only narrowly beaten into second place. All the judges – top chefs drawn from the hotel/restaurant and catering trades – agreed that the delicate blend of flavours in her dishes teased the palate to the point that she fully justified her place in the next round. Sian collected a £30.00 second place voucher for her choice of an avocado cheesecake starter followed by a main course of sticky duck breast and, for sweet, a tantalising wild berry charlotte.

All three judges praised the level of cuisine displayed by all involved in the competition, a point amply demonstrated, they said, by the small difference in points between the top and bottom placed competitors.

All competitors are asked to design and prepare a three course meal for two in 2hrs, the main ingredients to cost no more than £15.00 and the finished meal to be presented on a table setting laid by them.

Dorset’s Chalk Streams Most commonly found in the South of England, chalk streams are characterised by their crystal-clear waters. These wildlife-rich rivers have porous beds which act as aquifers, purifiers and reservoirs. Rainwater filters through the soft, white rock and emerges lower down the slope, cool and clean.

Because rainwater is naturally acidic, it also absorbs the chalk’s rich minerals. These are then transported to the river.

As Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows suggests, these rivers enable wildlife to thrive; birds, fish and mammals (such as the otter and vole) live off the rich nutrients.

Salmon and trout frequent the sparkling, ‘gin clear’ waters and tall blades of grass line the banks while water crowfoot flowers in the stream. In the meadows nearby, flag iris and meadowsweet grow in clusters, creating a paradise for animals, fishermen and walkers alike.

Unfortunately, these unique ecosystems are under threat. Due to an increase in demand, water companies extract too much water. The drought in early 2012 left many of these beautiful rivers dry. They are also threatened by invasive alien plants and have suffered from alterations by man over the years, reducing the suitability for spawning fish, burrowing water voles and the many important invertebrates that form the basis of the river’s rich wildlife.

With funding from Wessex Water and Dorset Area of Outstanding Beauty, Dorset Wildlife Trust have organised a restoration project: the Do rse t Wild R iv ers P ro jec t. T he partnership works with members of the local community, fishing groups and The Wild Trout Trust to repair the damage and restore the wildlife. The River Allen, which meanders for thirteen miles through the Dorset countryside, is one of the local chalk streams to benefit. Chalk streams are the richest river habitats for wildlife and the River Allen holds

the strongest population in Dorset of rare wildlife such as the native white-clawed crayfish. We now have a chance to do something to protect this important and vulnerable habitat and its wildlife before it is too late.

It is essential that we protect these rare and fragile habitats. We can all make a difference if we think carefully about the water we use; if we use water carefully, we can protect these rivers and conserve the wildlife which depend on them. New West Parley health walks proving A new guided walk from West Parley has been proving popular with people keen to get out into the fresh air and get active.

The free weekly health walks started on Wednesday 6 February with more than 20 people coming along to each of the first three sessions. The walks are organised by the Christchurch and East Dorset Partnership’s Activate1000 team and start from West Parley Sports and Social Club every Wednesday morning at 10am.

The walks take around an hour and usually cover between two and two and a half miles.

Karl Prince, Healthy Lifestyle Activator for Christchurch and East Dorset Partnership said: “These walks are a great way for people to enjoy their local countryside while keeping fit and meeting new people. The walks are proving very popular so far and we hope that more people will come and join us and enjoy the outdoors with us as spring approaches.”

Finding more about our heritage West Parley Heritage Open Day The last issue of Directory in West Parley gave details of the Open Day planned for April. Details have now been confirmed - 17th April from 10am to 4pm at Parley Sports and Social Club off Christchurch Road. Drop in at any time.

The aim of the Open Day is for residents: • to bring in any interesting finds from their gardens or around the village for a County Archaeologist to identify and explain them

to hear what fieldwork could be done in the village to discover more about our common past • to bring in old maps and photos, and other historical items that can add to existing knowledge and be used in a new Heritage book on the village • to volunteer for a range of heritage tasks over the coming months, such as fieldwalking, metal detecting, researching old buildings to gain more of an understanding of our history •
