Dear Ferndown & West Parley, I hope you all had a great Bank Holiday weekend for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee! My sister and I were remembering the Silver Jubilee and have a photo to prove how much we enjoyed it with our home made Jubilee hats at the street party. All good fun! There were certainly lots of picnics in the park, parties and other celebrations last weekend so I do hope you had a good time. We have lots of interesting articles this month... There is an Oakhurst Trek for Charlotte, an interview with the famous and well-loved Alan Titchmarsh, a murder mystery walk at Corfe Castle (not for the faint hearted), a very intriguing and beautiful Castle on the cliff, the Big Little Theatre School has a competition for you, there’s an interview with our British champion Mo Farah and the Ferndown Rotary raised £5000 for Charity! All good news so grab a cup of coffee and have a well deserved read. There are of course of very important trades people who wish to help you. Please give them a call whenever you need their expertise and do mention The Ferndown & West Parley Directory. Here’s to a fantastic month of June! Best Wishes,

Proud Members of the Ferndown Chamber of Commerce

Garden Art - for a brighter outside Pauline Tantardini will be showing her garden art at Compton Acres on 23rd and 24th June 2012. Pauline’s work uses mainly bold colours and designs in an abstract form to add interest and vibrancy to any garden. These pieces can enliven drab walls, fencing, sheds and can also be used amongst planting to add extra colour and interest all year round. These unique paintings are created using acrylics on exterior wood and then varnished for protection to create a long lasting finish. The size is mainly 60cms x 60cms, although larger or smaller pieces are available. Pauline came up with the idea for garden art whilst painting outdoors one summers day and propping the completed artwork against a wall to dry. She loved the look of it in this location and began to experiment with colour and design to see what would work well outside. These pieces were noticed by friends and family and much admired – garden art was born! We look forward to seeing you at Compton Acres where a selection of these beautiful paintings will be available for purchase! You can view more of Pauline’s work online at: Or email her on

Interview with Mo Farah

Like us:

Fly-Mo Medium distance British talent Mo Farah eyes up Olympic glory. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past seven years, you will be aware that all eyes are firmly fixed on London this year as the capital plays host to the greatest show on earth – the Olympic Games. But as the nation prepares to fix its eyes on the once in a lifetime sporting extravaganza, for the home grown athletes competing the prospect of career defining and life changing moments grow ever nearer. Few will be feeling that more keenly than Mo Farah. Ask any athletics fan, even the more casual ones, and they will tell you that Farah ranks among Britain’s best hopes of gold medal success come August: after all, Farah is the current 5,000m world champion and currently holds a whole host of records, including the European track record for 10,000m and the British indoor record for 3,000m. Now living in America in Portland, 29year-old Farah’s mind is completely focussed on the prize. “The training is going well,” Farah confirms. “I’ve just come back from high altitude training in Kenya and the other athletes and I there are doing broker training together, which is going well.

TFWPD June 2012 page 18

Mo Farah “I’ve not done anything different to what I have done over the last couple of years – I always train with Kenyans. I used to train at St. Martins College and it was there I saw some Kenyan athletes doing their thing, which was very different to what I was doing. I was still into going out, having a good time, but they would be in bed by 8pm. I ended up moving in with them, just learning things from them. It really helped me improve; it was exactly what I needed.” To use running parlance, the Olympic

You’ve just got to be strong and do everything that you can. I’m definitely looking forward to it, but you just have to try not to put that pressure on yourself.” Farah’s story is an uplifting one that is in tune with the Olympic spirit. Born in Somalia, he moved from Mogadishu to London aged eight able to speak only the most basic English. “I could say ‘excuse me’ and ‘where is the toilet?’” he says “which made it hard, but my cousin was in the same class so I got through it.” Yet despite that tough start, it was actually at school that Farah’s talents were spotted. More interested in football (“I only wanted to play on the wing for Arsenal when I was at school”), his PE teacher Alan Watkinson nevertheless encouraged Farah to take up running after being impressed with the potential he displayed at Feltham Community College. “I’d never done any running in Africa, even though I lived there until I was eight, so I didn’t even think about doing it before.” Soon, though, his potential began to become realised. He won five school titles and made a major breakthrough by winning the 5000m at the European Athletics Junior Championships in 2001. Farah’s career since turning senior in 2005 has had its share of disappointments

TFWPD June 2012 page 19

as well as glory, with his performance in the Beijing Olympics in 2008 a huge letdown. “I had to regroup from that setback – really reassess and come back stronger. And to be fair, I’ve done just that.” Farah has upped his game considerably, with 2011 his most successful year to date, culminating in two medals at the World Championships - silver in the 10,000m and gold in the 5,000m. How would Farah rank his chances of Olympic glory? “It will be difficult, of course. The biggest rivals are the Kenyans and the other Europeans, and I’ve just got to do everything I can. I’m not going to make any predictions. I am desperate to make it onto the world stage but I can’t say how it will go. It’s a long way from scaring deer in Richmond Park where I used to train!” But even away from his own medal hopes, Farah appreciates the opportunity hosting the Olympic Games gives London and the country at large, and is looking forward to what should be an incredible experience. “Yeah, it’s going to be amazing. To have the Olympics right on your doorstep is absolutely amazing. But you’ve got to take that advantage of having the home crowd along with you. I’m definitely looking forward to it, and I don’t want to have any regrets.” Mo Farah is fuelled by Lucozade helping him go Faster. Stronger. For Longer. Check out Mo in action at lucozade.

Murder Mystery at Corfe

Like us:

MURDER MYSTERY PICNIC & WALK IN THE CORFE CASTLE RUINS Gates open 6.30pm for walk at 7.30pm July 16th, 18th, 23rd, 25th August 6th, 8th, 13th 2012 Yes, it’s back! The highly acclaimed Double Act Murder Mystery Walks are back this year. Once again with thanks to the National Trust for access to the Castle itself. The gates will open at 6.30pm for you to bring your own picnic and dine alfresco in the outer bailey before the mystery starts at 7.30pm. Bulky items can be left near the exit for collection when you leave the Castle. All we ask is that you take any rubbish home with you. What could be more atmospheric for a murder mystery than the ruins at twilight? However the walk will involve steep rough paths and steps and we must leave the castle ruins before dark for safety reasons. So anyone taking part does so at their own risk. Due to the popularity of the past walks and necessity to restrict numbers for safety it is strongly recommended that early bookings be made by purchasing tickets at the National Trust Shop, The Square, Corfe Castle or by phone on 01929 480921. Tickets are £7 for adults & £6 for children.

TFWPD June 2012 page 22

Time has passed since the young King Edward was assassinated at Corfe Castle under suspicious circumstances and rumours of miracles are circulating. The Shire Reeve has been dispatched to Corfe to investigate illegal furze cutting on the common, but he uncovers sinister conspiracies and dark evil deeds that threaten to destroy not only the peaceful idyll of the Dorset countryside but also to tear apart the young Christian nation now known as England. Being the dark ages, suspected miscreants were often subjected to trial by ordeal to prove their innocence - not a pretty sight! All will be revealed along with many other surprises at Corfe Castle on July 16th, 18th, 23rd, 25th & August 6th, 8th, 13th 2012 at 6.30pm.

An experience not to be missed!

The Double Act players ready themselves to take you through dastardly deeds and murderous mayhem in days gone by.

The Castle on the cliff... Mention of the words “Camelot”, “Castle” and “Tintagel” to most will conjure up images of King Arthur, knights and wizards. Whilst the ruins of a castle fabled to be that of King Arthur are to indeed be seen at Tintagel, there is also an altogether different place to be found there… Camelot Castle. Not only the home of John & Irina Mappin and artist Ted Stourton, this is also an idyllic, dog-friendly hotel. Perched atop the cliffs overlooking the ruins, the breath-taking scenery adds to the peace and tranquillity. However, there is a deep purpose behind this amazing location. “Our purpose in creating Camelot Castle is to have a place where anyone who agrees that life can be enhanced by natural beauty and art can come and experience that enhancement immediately and first hand. Camelot Castle provides a unique space where people can come to share both in the extraordinary natural beauty of our environment and in the extraordinary strength created when people of goodwill share their ideas and vision. “In c.800 A.D. Harrona Rachid, the supreme ruler of Baghdad, governed and administrated the entire Arab world. At that time, Harrona Rachid, the conceptual architect of the first “Golden Age”, passed a law. That law stated, that every Th u r sd ay , ev ery Ma ste r of e ve ry intellectual or physical discipline, be it Mathematics, Architecture, Religion, Political, or Creative must attend court and Rachid stated that, by law, they should and must share their ideas. This one act caused a ripple of innovation and new ideas that spread across the Arabic

TFWPD June 2012 page 28

Camelot Castle basking in the sunshine world and Mesopotamian culture up through Spain and half of Europe. Indeed, ideas that occurred then are still visible today across the civilised world. “What was only known by a handful of people until today was the fact that Haronna Rachid also issued every law and every order to his empire using Formal Arabic Poetry. As early as 800 A.D. Harrona Rachid had isolated the power of the use of aesthetics and beauty in carrying a message across thousand of miles and great distances. For this reason, the poets and artists of Baghdad were some of the greatest that the world has ever known. The Arabian Nights were written in his honour and Harrona is immortalized in them. Harrona Rachid was probably one of the greatest champions of creativity that the world has ever seen.

Find us online at “There are two other well known nonreligious occasions in recent history, when men have risen to this extraordinary level of responsibility and wisdom. The first was the formation of the Round Table at the Court of Arthur Pendragon on the advice of Merlin, which cracked the suppression of the dark ages across Europe. The other was the stru ctu re and cod ification of th e American Constitution by the Founding Fathers. “The Founders of Camelot have been able to research deeper into the wisdoms of the east than ever before. They have been able to draw on the modern and workable wisdom embodied in the freedoms established and maintained by the United States. And, through unique access and friendships in the Middle East the Found ers have isolated some previously unguessed at importances, heralded by Arabic culture, that will effect the entire future of mankind. “So when you visit us at Camelot and share your ideas here at our round table, realise that you are being and becoming part of a purpose line that is indeed both ancient and of the future. For these purposes are woven through the very fabric and the structure of our societies.

Debbie and Hayden at the round table

TFWPD June 2012 page 29

Hayden taking Lady Coco for a walk “They are the weft and warp of creativity. Truthfully, there has never been a time in the world when the sharing of ideas across the world is more important than right here right now. “The importance of our artists to our society has been grossly underestimated and it is time that we began to value the contribution that our own creativity can make. Camelot is here today so that you can experience, tap into and be, your creativity. Even the greatest barriers surrender to the creativity of man. “Our purpose is for you to create yourself and thus, to enhance all life.” Debbie, Hayden and I were fortunate enough to be invited to stay by the owners and enjoyed a fantastic view of the coastline and ruins from our room. The food and service at the hotel were outstanding and Hayden thoroughly enjoyed taking the owner’s dogs for walks in the grounds. I highly recommend a visit and it is a lot closer than you might think! Stephen Corney

Ferndown Rotary chips in with £5000 Two local charities SUSTAIN and Julia’s House have benefited to the tune of £2500.00 each from the proceeds of Ferndown Rotary Club’s Charity Golf Day. Staged over the lush Parkland course at Canford Magna, the four ball, stableford competition attracted a field of more than 100 local golfers who vied for a selection of prizes ranging from a car for a ‘hole in one’ to a fabulous selection of golf equipment. Overall winner was ‘The Ferns’ team of Roz & Terry Stockley and Jenni & Rod Mitchell-Fox, who turned in an excellent score of 100 points. Speaking at the presentation, Ferndown Rotary’s President Antonino Perrella said: ‘Because of the current poor economic climate and the fact that we had to change the usual June date to avoid a clash with the Diamond Jubilee holiday, we feared the worst. Pleasingly, however, the event more than lived up to everything we could have hoped for. Even the rain held off!’ ‘The support from our sponsor Hendy Group was fantastic and the support from local golfers was amazing,’ he closed.

Gardening Tips

Like us:

What to do in your Garden in June As any gardener knows this time of year can be fantastic in the garden if all goes as planned. That includes of course the weather co-operating with hot barmy days and nice cool nights filled with the aroma of night scented flowers, if you had the forethought to plant them. So, for starters here are some things that you can do in the garden this month: Keep pots and baskets well watered. As plants are growing vigorously and the June sun can be strong, watering twice a day could be necessary in some cases. But please observe any water restrictions in your area. If they are in force you can install a water butt and/or save the water from your kettle (cooled) and the washing of veggies, in a bucket and supplement your watering. It’s surprising how much water one can collect in this way. In addition new plants should be watered in well at planting time, and during any dry spells. When planting, create a shallow dip around the plant base to hold water, and give a good soaking every couple of days, not a cupful twice a day. The point here is to encourage roots to extend deep down into the soil to find moisture and become well established. Little and often watering methods encourage roots to come close to the soil surface where they are more likely to dry out. Mulch around plants in beds and borders and large containers, to retain moisture. A nice thick layer of leaf mould is the best, but grass clippings or composted wood chippings are good alternatives. A layer of newspaper, covered over with grass mowings will help to suppress weeds and retain valuable moisture during long hot spells.

If you have climbing plants in your garden you will understand the beauty and height they bring to the garden. Plants, such as Clematis, Virginia Creeper and Honeysuckle, to mention just a few, are that they twist themselves around anything they come into contact with and support themselves. However, sometimes their stems can fall astray and they need some help. Simply tuck them in to the rest of the plant or tie it wherever you want to grow. Take care not to use wire or anything that could dig into branches or stems if they do need some added help. Dead-heading roses starts now and continues right through to the end of autumn. Cut off each spent flower head as and when you spot them. On floribunda varieties, wait until all of the flowers on the stem have died and cut them off at the base (where it meets the branch). For an organic slug and snail control try saving your egg shells and then crushing them up and putting them around the base of the plant you wish to protect. The theory is that snails and slugs don't like crawling over this and will go elsewhere for lunch or dinner.

Simple Sudoku Perfect for your coffee break! The one rule: Fill in all blank cells making sure that each row, each column and each 3 by 3 box contains the numbers 1 to 9.

Interview with Alan Titchmarsh

Like us:

Going green Passionate Yorkshireman Alan Titchmarsh looks back over 23 years getting down and dirty in the garden. Let’s be honest, it’s a rather inexplicable phenomenon - Alan Titchmarsh becoming a sex symbol and housewife favourite. Is the greenfingered personality really up there with the George Clooney and David Beckham? Or is it all just a rather long drawn out joke? Alan certainly thinks it might be... “I honestly think someone’s been having a laugh for all these years at my expense,” he begins. “And then I get journalists and people asking about it and I feel if I ever once took it seriously, I’d get even more laughs. I know what I look like and I’m certainly no Hollywood idol - I think it’s time we put that one to bed once and for all because no one’s buying it, especially me!” Titchmarsh, who has just turned 63, will celebrate the tenth series of his selftitled ITV chat show later this year, and he’s already compiled a wish list of celebrity guests for the big event. “Maggie Smith would be amazing but she never does interviews as far as I’m aware. She would be the ultimate for me, so fingers crossed. Though as much as I’d love to sit down with her, I’d imagine it might be a terrible interview! “And Julie Walters - I’ve had her on before but she’s one of my favourites. I

love anyone who’s up for a great chat and who opens up. She always stands out for me as a fabulous guest. “Ultimately though, it’s not just about the celebrities for me. I’ll sit down with a chimney sweep and have him on the show if he’s a good talker. I’ll have anyone on my show who’s willing to talk to me.” The dad of two, heading up this year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live at the Birmingham NEC, has been a household favourite since his first stint as a horticulture correspondent way back in 1979. And having cultivated an image as

It’s such a huge event, on a worldwide scale, and while I’m thrilled to even be involved, I find myself a little jumpy at the notion. It’s such a massive event watched by billions across the globe… and that’s a thought I could actually do without too! I just hope I don’t get tongue tied.” Will he get a chance to meet the lady herself on the day? “I’m not sure, to be honest. I might get a royal wave if I’m lucky.” As for BBC’s Gardeners’ World Live, visitors will experience theatre and stage shows, as well as getting the chance to meet their favourite TV stars, including Monty Don, Carol Klein, Joe Swift and of course, Titchmarsh himself, who explains why the four-day event is w onder f ul oppor tuni ty to mee t gardener’s from around the country. With so much time out of Yorkshire, Titchmarsh will be happy to return for some well-earned time in his Ravensworth home. “I must say, as a proud Yorkshireman, there’s nothing quite like coming home after working away. We all know how special the county is, but sometimes you have to leave and come back to really feel it again. I’ve been very lucky in my career in the sense that I can

experience London and all that holds, whilst also knowing that venturing back to home roots is there for me. “I’ve never really had a career plan,” he admits. “I’m more an opportunist. When opportunities come along, it’s about recognising them, and that's something I’ve always done. Saying ‘yes, I’ll take a shot at that’, regardless of the risk of flak. “The Ground Force show took a lot of stick initially for popularising gardening, but I stand by it. It used good techniques and allowed people who were somewhat intimidated by the process to realise it’s not out of their reach. “As for what the future holds... well, right now, I’d just like to continue working, presenting my show, writing more books and spending more time in my garden.” And does he get much time to venture amongst the flora and fauna, what with dreaming of Maggie Smith and waving at the Queen? “Every chance I get, I’m in there. I make sure each evening to at least take a jaunt around my garden, do a little dead-heading. I’d spend all my time there if I could, but the BBC might have something to say about that!” See Alan Titchmarsh at BBC Gardeners' World Live from the 13-17 June at the NEC in Birmingham with Monty Don, Carol Klein, Joe Swift and many more of your favourite gardeners. With hundreds of exhibitors, RHS Show Gardens and free entry to the BBC Good Food Show Summer, it's the perfect day out for any keen gardener. For more info please visit or call 0844 581 1340.

We need your help... Like any charity we depend on donations from our supporters to cover the cost of our work, but donations can take many different forms. Why not enter our prize draw (see opposite) or come along to our special charity day being held at Adventure Wonderland on 23rd August 2012. The play house will be on display at the Christchurch Festival on 30th June 2012. Why not shop at one of our online shops - we receive commission from each of the retailers and it doesn’t cost you any more than high street shopping. We are constantly in need of mobile phones, printer cartridges, china, bric-a-brac, DVDs and even computers and printers (working or not) which we can sell to raise funds. We also need holiday accommodation around the world either as a donation or at reduced rates for us to offer as part of a respite break.

Tell your friends about us - the more supporters we have the easier it is to spread our news and reach those in need. If you would like to make a donation by debit or credit card, please visit:
