4 Dear Ferndown & West Parley, July already! The children Edition 111 will soon be off school and many of us we will taking our yearly holiday. It is always such an exciting time. We just hope the sun will shine and we can all get outdoors to enjoy the fresh air. Nellie did take us for a refreshing evening out, Debbie & Stephen Corney with a momentary ‘blip’, with our son Hayden which you can read about on page 38. We are looking forward to a camping trip very soon, so you will hear all about that in our August issue. So whatever you have planned this summer we do hope you make the most of it, have some family time and generally get out and about. Whilst we have our attention on sun, sea and sand, let’s also help keep our local trades’ people busy! Amberwood House Open Day supports Local Young People As part of National Care Home Day last month Amberwood House Care Home in Ferndown hosted a commemoration of the ‘Battle of Waterloo,’ the proceeds of which will be donated to local charity, the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation. A great afternoon was had by all with superb entertainment, tea and cakes and even a ‘Welly Throwing Competition.’ The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) was privileged to be chosen as ‘Charity of the Year’ for the second year running by Amberwood House. Care Home Manager, Maggie
Tomlin, recently presented a cheque for £1000 to the charity, the proceeds of their 2014 fundraising and Linda and Pete Thornton were delighted to hear that the JTYAF had been selected by the residents for another year. Pete Thornton commented, “We have close family connections with Amberwood and we were very touched to hear that the residents had chosen to support John’s Foundation for another year. It’s lovely to see the older generation helping local young people and we are so grateful for their continued support.”

Lucy’s recipe corner Healthy veggie bake
Carefully slice the aubergine and courgettes and layer them into a baking dish. Pour the tomatoes into a jug and add the basil and garlic clove (you can pop this in whole). Use a hand blender and whizz up until smooth. INGREDIENTS
1 medium/large aubergine 2 courgettes Cupful cheddar cheese Handful of fresh basil 1 clove of garlic Tin of chopped tomatoes Enough pasta for those around the table!
Pour the sauce over the veggies and add the grated cheese to the top. Bake until golden in the oven (fan 190°c/ 215°c) and serve on a little bed of pasta.

Talking about Wildlife...
The Magic of Butterflies Butterflies are one of the most idolised insects in Britain. Their beautiful colourings add to the landscape and bring a smile to those who catch sight of them. The ideal habitat of a butterfly is dependent on the time of year and the species. Some species thrive in lowland forests, whilst others prefer wetlands, mountains or grasslands. Not all butterflies live in one single habitat, however. Despite the decline of butterflies in the last few decades, Dorset remains a stronghold, with summer the best time to enjoy the colour of the forty-odd resident species around the county. Britain’s most widespread blue butterfly, the Common Blue, is visible all summer long, breeding twice a summer in the South. Dorset’s rich landscape of grasslands, heaths and meadows is ideal for supporting this easily recognisable butterfly. The large majority of butterflies only survive for two to four weeks, but those who survive through winter - monarch butterflies and mourning cloaks - can live up to 9 months. This means they have to pass on their genes quickly. Butterflies identify a suitable mate by the markings on their wings; each species has a unique marking. Certain species also have specific flight patterns, which they use
in courtship. Both the male and female will assess the performance of their potential mate and will judge whether or not they are a suitable companion. Butterflies taste with their feet and only consume liquids. Their diets generally consist of nectar and mud puddles, which contain important nutrients. This summer, some of the best Dorset Wildlife Trust reserves to see butterflies are: Fontmell Down nature reserve, Powerstock Common, Portland quarries nature reserves, Haydon Hill and Kingcombe Meadows Nature Reserve. The sun shone on West Parley and a wonderful day was had by all those who attended the event at the Country Club on 7th June.
Parish Noticeboard
We are attempting to find more ways to keep local residents informed about village events and, to this end, have changed the use of the free-standing noticeboard at Parley Cross to one for local events and groups. Notices regarding Parish Council business will now be found on the silver framed board attached to the front of the public conveniences.
Parish Council vacancies
There are still a number of vacancies for the Parish Council that we are keen to fill as soon as possible. This is a great way to contribute to your local community and help improve West Parley for the benefit of all. Experience is not necessary, just a willingness to make West Parley the best it can be! West Parley in Bloom With more blue planters put in place by the side of our main roads and lots of verge tidying being undertaken by the volunteers, West Parley is looking good as we get closer to judging day for the South and South East in Bloom competition on 9th July. A very big ‘Thank You’ to all the residents who have been keeping the frontage to their property nice and tidy. This helps a lot.
Almost 20 residents have entered the local front and back garden competitions and judging for these takes place during the week commencing 27th July.
Housing Plans Many of us are concerned about the plans for large scale housing developments in and around West Parley. We are seeing the estate at the former Coppins Nursery growing by the day and work will soon start on the large Holmwood estate in Longham. A 650 house development north of Wimborne was considered by the District Council recently. Residents have previously stated that they are happy with up to 100 new houses in West Parley in the medium term but feel that the plans for over 500 here is too much. We will look at the arguments used to support the Wimborne proposals and see how these may relate to our village.
Foodbank latest The Parley Foodbank has received over 260 donations in the past three months. Many thanks to all who contributed to this amazing total. We are going to take a break until October, when the collection bins will returned to the same venues. The Trussell Trust, and the recipients of the food pass on their grateful appreciation.
Post Office
The refit of the Post Office will take place this month, allowing increased efficiency within the pharmacy. The Post Office will close 17.30pm on Weds 22 July and reopen 13.00pm Tues 28 July, please use the Ferndown Post Office in the meantime for all your requirements.
Children’s Summer Activities
Once again this year we are hosting events for the youngsters in our area. Nuts About Nature, a free event held in and around Parley Wood is on 25th or 26th August – look out on our website and our facebook page nearer the time for details. Before that we are hosting two Sting in the Tale interactive story events. The fun starts on 10thAugust with the highly entertaining storyteller Graham Rogers who needs lots of help from all ages to keep his story on track (or not!) Then on 15th August the marvellous Lizzie Bryant is taking us on another journey through Parley Wood where the Pillywiggins are in peril!

I have saved up more than him and will be paying the bigger share of the deposit. If we should break up and sell the property, is there anything that I can do to protect my money?
Yes there is. You can protect your share of the deposit by making a Declaration of Trust with your boyfriend when you purchase. This document can set out your intentions with regards to the proceeds of sale.

How will my Executors know what assets are in my estate on my death? I am a very private person and I do not wish them to have this information during my lifetime. The simplest thing is to keep a list of all your assets somewhere at your home and to advise your Executors where this list can be found in the event of your death. It is important that if you do this you keep the list up to date. It is best if, rather than redoing the list each time you change investments, you keep it up to date on a rolling basis.
Your Solicitor will advise that you should hold the ‘equity’ in the property—being the money that you have left in the property after paying off the mortgage and meeting the costs of the sale—as Tenants in Common. This means that you still own the property jointly but that you have two separate shares in the equity in the property. For example, the Declaration of Trust could state that you each receive back your respective deposit contributions and if you were to be paying the outgoings and the mortgage equally, you could share any uplift in the value of the property equally. Consideration should also be given as to what should happen in the event of the property going down in price and you being in negative equity at the point of the sale. Ideally you should discuss this with your boyfriend at the earliest opportunity and reach an agreement. If you cannot agree as what you should do about the financial aspects of the purchase, you should give some thought as to whether the joint purchase is actually a good idea at all!
This will allow your Executors to see quickly what investments you owned, when you sold or encashed them and how you reinvested the proceeds. That way if your Executors find papers relating to an investment you do not appear to have at your death they can find out what happened to it without having to investigate further.

Parley Heritage: Medieval Parley Parley in the Middle Ages was a fairly self-sufficient small community of under 100 people. With good meadow land close to the Stour, flat arable land and wide open heath to the north on poorer soil, the village had all the ingredients for a thriving rural community. Life was hard but structured around annual farming and church routines. There were few buildings. The better ones, such as All Saints Church were in local stone but most were of cob with a reed or straw roof. The economy relied on local resources; clay for buildings and pottery and gravel for paths and tracks. There used to be extensive woodland all along the east side of Church Lane that provided timber for fuel, fencing and buildings and Parley Common offered turf for fuel as well as bracken and heather. Cattle and pigs were grazed on different part of the village depending on the season. Parley Common was well used all year as was meadow land by both the Moors and Stour Rivers. Animals grazed the pasture land after crops were harvested. There were a number of ponds round West Parley for animals to use including those now long gone, such as opposite Stocks Farm and on the east side of the bend in Church Lane.
With fish from the Stour and local berries and other fruits as well as nettles and honey, nothing was wasted. Some local trading took place. Oyster shells found in old rubbish pits in Church Lane were from Poole. There was trading with Christchurch, Wimborne and Poole via Longham and direct to the coast by crossing the Stour by boat. On the pasture land the medieval open field system was used. There were long strips of land being used by all peasants who would each have a number of strips around the village. This meant they all had plots from both good and bad land. Yet much of the work had to be shared, especially at harvest time when everyone, including young children, had to help out. Many of the main field boundaries here are the same as in the medieval period and there is clear evidence of the current field outlines following the distinctive lines of ancient ploughing methods. Even into the 20th century there were many small farms and market gardens here and aerial photos from the late 1940s show rows of crops that match many of the ancient farming methods. Some residents even remember cattle being moved around the village, even on the main roads, something difficult to imagine now. John Cullen

Moorlands Road Dental Practice Welcomes their new colleague John Edward After working with us at the practice for 2 years, Casey Carnall left us at the beginning of July in order to take up another dental position. Our new dentist John Edward is looking forward to taking over from Casey on 10th August. John qualified from the University of Bristol in 2003 and started his first job in Swanage in the same year. Having spent two enjoyable years working there and learning about life in general practice he then took up a job as a Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at Southampton Hospital. This job involved carrying out oral surgery on a day-to-day basis as well as looking after in-patients on the ward. It gave an excellent grounding in surgical technique and enabled him to sit the exams to become a Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons of the Royal College of Surgeons (England). After the time spent working in hospital John wanted to return to general practice and settled into a private clinic in Shaftesbury. He enjoys being able to provide good quality dental care and though able to provide general dental services he is particularly interested in root-fillings and aesthetic restorative solutions. Through clear communication and a gentle approach, patients feel at ease and involved in their care at all times. Away from dentistry John enjoys getting away with his young family and exploring in their campervan. When time allows you may find him hacking through the undergrowth on a local golf course or cycling through the lanes. Past Chairman of East Dorset presents cheques to his chosen charities Fundraising during his year in office as Chairman of East Dorset District Council, Cllr Robin Cook raised a total of £5847. £5200 of this has gone to his chosen charities, the Alzheimer’s Society and Friends of Victoria Hospital, Wimborne. He has now presented each of the charities with a cheque for £2600. In addition £647 was donated to the Bournemouth University Dementia Institute as a contribution to their Dementia Orchestra project. Cllr Cook said: “I am pleased that I was able to raise this money to help these great causes, and also wanted to recognise the help that Bournemouth University gave us towards raising this total. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van A huge advantage of having a campervan is the ease of just deciding to “go out” whatever the time of day, or night, and get some space, relax and enjoy our wonderful English countryside. The weather has been so much better recently and we have had some beautiful evenings, so what better excuse than to put milk in the fridge, coffee in the cupboard and let Nellie take us for a drive! We did exactly that last week. Hayden had gone to scouts, leaving Stephen and I some time on our own for a couple of hours. We all live such busy lives and I just needed a walk to clear away the hustle and bustle of the day. Holt Heath is owned by the National Trust and belongs to the Kingston Lacy Estate. Situated 4 miles north east of Wimborne Minster, it is quite a magnificent expanse of dry and wet heathland, bog and ancient woodland with views all the way to the Isle of Wight.

It was a gorgeous evening as we parked a very contented Nellie in a small parking bay. Stephen and I went for a slow, leisurely walk along the ‘path’. Livestock have actually been reintroduced to this 400 hectares of heathland. Their grazing is helping to reduce the shrubs and also control the coarser grasses which allows rare plants and species to thrive and flourish. While we were there we saw cattle, ‘wild’ horses and ponies….as well as several cyclists. There is a circular route with the largest walk being 6 miles long and taking up to 3 hours. Oh what a shame, we only had 2 hours before we had to pick Hayden up…or was that a good excuse? The smaller route is just 3 miles long. It is also possible, as Stephen and I can attest, to take an even shorter route if you are not feeling quite so energetic. I really must be getting old! To be honest on a good day, picnic and a

bottle of water in hand, this would be a perfect spot to get away from it all and really enjoy the peace and quiet while observing nature at its best. Ironically once we were back in Nellie doing just that, enjoying the serene ambience with a cuppa from the whistling kettle, a driver came along and parked right in front of us with thumping music blasting out of the car! I couldn’t believe it. I waited a while thinking whoever it was wouldn’t stay long. All my hopes of a tranquil couple of hours were fearfully fading away. It was obvious after ten minutes that this person was staying right there. I got out of the van and carefully approached the car. We do live in a democracy, so I did hold back what I really wanted to say (us English are very good at that!), and quietly asked if the music could be turned down, as we could only hear the rather loud beating drums. Don’t you just love it. The lady was very good and the music was turned down. A short while later the car drove off. Phew! Nellie, who had gotten rather tense with all of this,

breathed a sigh of relief. My serenity was back and I was once again able to take in the silence and calmness that I was seeking. It must be all the fishing I did with Dad when I was younger. All those blissful lazy days with nothing to worry about, no cares in the world and surrounded by chirpy singing birds, butterflies, family picnics, the gentle plop of the float landing in the water. Those were the days! Back to present times. This area of heathland really is gorgeous. If you are looking for tranquillity and nature, not too far off the beaten track, then I highly recommend you take a drive and witness the countryside in its glory. If you are looking for a disco, this is not the place to be … or maybe it is, if a car parks in front of you! Where will Nellie go next…?

The Great Pacific Rubbish Patch There is a floating island of plastic rubbish, twice the size of Texas, caught in a current gyro between USA and Hawaii. The area is filled with plastic but doesn’t show up on satellite. While predicted in the mid 80s it was discovered in 1999 by Charles J Moore who sailed into it by mistake as he was returning from a yacht race. This problem is not unique to the Pacific. There are a few oceanic garbage patches throughout the world, including one on our doorstep in the North Atlantic. In a recent National Geographic article it was estimated that worldwide there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Of that mass, 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some 4 billion plastic microfibers per square kilometre litter the deep sea.

The knock on effect is a catastrophic loss of marine habitat and marine life as well as other wildlife and birds in particular. Small islands, already being swallowed up by the rubbish patches, become uninhabitable and an increasing amount of rubbish is being swept up on our coastlines. Furthermore, it means changes in tidal and wave patterns the impact of which we may not understand for 100s of years. And if we do nothing... who knows where it stops. Start them young! Would you like to see your youngsters spending more time outdoors and get them eating healthy foods too? Then what better idea than to involve the kids in growing their own?
I was an incredibly picky eater as a child. I remember wanting to like tomatoes because they were such a lovely bright colour but still I wouldn’t eat them! It was only after my mother started growing them at home that I finally plucked one straight from the plant and popped it, warm from the sun, into my mouth - delicious! Jobs for July:Make last sowings of carrots and French beans. Keep harvesting those beans, peas and courgettes. Sow Spring cabbage. Lift onions (and garlic if it’s still in) and dry for storing over the winter. Plait and hang (or store in a string bag). Remember tomatoes.

As crops go over use the free space for quick growing salad leaves or radishes. Peg down some of the runners from your strawberries to root into new plants. Remove the remainder.
While we’d all love a string of willing, young, helpers on the vegetable plot you do have to be realistic. Children can have short attention spans, will only want to do the jobs that appeal to them, and usually expect quick results. Us adults on the other hand tend to be stuck in our ways, place great importance in doing things slowly and methodically and don’t usually take well to sudden changes of plan! So how can you encourage your little ones, without boring them out of the garden, or having them dig up your row of prize leeks? If it is at all possible give children a space that is completely their own on the plot. Get hold of some good quality child size tools and encourage their attempts even if it isn’t quite what you’d have done - if digging holes and making mud pies is more in their line than neat rows of seedlings perhaps they could create a wildlife area? A shallow dish sunk into the ground can be used by birds, frogs, toads and hedgehogs, and a log pile will be home to all sorts of insects plus providing a possible hedgehog home. Giant sunflowers are great fun, especially if you have a growing competition, and wild flower seeds can just be scattered and will, in time, encourage useful insects and birds natural pest control! Keen young growers can browse seed
packets or catalogues to see what takes their fancy. Quick growing crops are a good suggestion - radishes and salad leaves pop up in no time at all and should give them almost instant satisfaction! Sweet young carrots are likely to tempt even picky eaters, as are those lovely little cherry tomatoes. Popping peas out of their pods is very appealing and how about growing their own hideaway in the form of a lush green wigwam of peas or beans? They may not be keen on eating greens, but there is certainly a much better chance that they’ll be tempted to try something they’ve grown themselves. Fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries is usually popular, and if you haven’t got any of your own planted yet you can always get them enthusiastic by having an afternoon out at the pick your own farm. Ready grown plug plants can be good for helping them to set up an ‘instant’ plot - take a trip out to the garden centre to see what is on offer. If you already have seedlings started, then they could have the choice of some for their own plot (and you can see whose grows best!). Finally, don’t forget ‘indoor’ growing activities too clean out the bottom half of a boiled egg and draw a face on it. Fill it with cotton wool soaked in water and sprinkle on some cress seeds - in just a few days the egg man will be growing hair and not only can they cut his hair but they can eat it too!

Holiday Feet! Our feet are not always our best assets, yet they are so impor tant! At this time of the year with warm weather and sandals it is essential that our feet look good and are properly cared for. I went along to see Debra at Merrief ield Podiatry to see just what she could do with my sad looking feet that have been well wrapped up in shoes for many months. Debra is well trained having star ted her career as a nurse but then changed to study for a degree in Podiatry at Southampton University. She is also registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and is a member of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists. I knew I was in good hands! Debra examined my feet first. If you have any pain or problems with your feet she can cer tainly advise the best solutions. There are also preventative measures of course, and avoiding high heels is a good idea‌ but at 5’ 1� and a peanut, I am not very good at that! After a thorough examination Debra got to work getting rid of all that hard, dead skin that had accumulated over the winter months. They already looked so much better. She then tackled each toe. I have to say that my little toes are not the best at all, and Debra gave them a much improved appearance. With nails manicured, cuticles and dead skin all gone, it was now time to choose a colour. The exciting par t! I chose a beautiful peach / orange which made a pleasant change from the pink shades I normally go for. By the time Debra was done I had different feet! Well
not quite, but they def initely were a vast improvement on the ones I had entered the room in. I would advise you to take open toe shoes with you, so that the newly perfected toes do not get ruined in shoes, before all toes are totally and absolutely dry. Debra was really good and provided me with flip flops. As it was raining outside I did look rather odd driving off, but hey, beauty has its challenges! Debra has clinics in Broadstone, Poole, Ferndown and Bearwood, that she runs herself, so it is very easy to find a location near to you. I highly recommend you give Merrief ield Podiatry a try before you go on holiday to make the most of your feet. After all they carry us every day of the week, so they deserve some attention!
