Bournemouth school pupil gets Royal seal of approval to ‘Plant The World Green’ A Bournemouth school pupil has received a letter of support by Her Majesty The Queen and A-list celebrities in her efforts to launch a Charitable Trust to plant more trees. Nine-year-old Issey, a Year 5 pupil at Bethany C.E Junior School in Bournemouth, along with her Mother, Janine Purser, is planning to set up a Charitable Trust to get all school children in the country to plant their own trees in school grounds or to create a coppice in their neighbourhoods. With support from BCP Council, this venture links with The Queen’s Green Canopy, a UK Wide tree planting initiative to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, by inviting people to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”. Over the last year, the council has planted over 10,000 trees across the conurbation to help combat the climate and ecological emergency, with councillors impressed by Issey’s passion to plant more trees. Councillor Mark Anderson, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Place, said: “Climate change is such an important issue, we must listen to the voices of young people to help ensure that their future is protected. “I was really pleased to meet with Izzy and help support her campaign. What she is trying to do fits in with the ecological emergency we declared in 2019 and is particularly relevant as we approach the Queen’s Jubilee and the Woodland trust campaign to “plant a tree for the jubilee”. We should also remember that ecological emergency also covers biodiversity so it’s important to protect wildlife and other plants.” So far, Issey has received letters of support from Her Majesty The Queen, naturalist Sir David Attenborough and the musician, Sting. With support from her school, Issey’s named 6

her project - ‘Plant The World Green’ – and she hopes to encourage more school children across the UK to get the opportunity to plant their own tree over the next 10 years and to make the area cleaner, greener and safer. Issey said: “I know how important it is for children to plant trees. It makes the world more beautiful and helps our lovely wildlife. It allows us all to breathe and for our animals to have a home. One of my favourite things to do is going for walks with my Daddy and my younger sister in the New Forest. I also want to write a book about wildlife and the woods!” Councillor Jane Kelly, Lead Member for Communities, said: “It is really heart-warming to hear Issey talk about her passion for the environment and her wish to encourage all children to plant trees as part of the Queens Jubilee in 2022. Issey is an inspiration to others and I am so proud of her and her family.” To formally recognise her efforts, Cllr Mark Anderson has recommended Issey for a Commendation at the next BCP full council meeting in January 2022.

QUIRKY FACTS by Mica Bale Welcome to 2022! As January has once again come around to herald another new year, what could be better than delving into the county’s quirky history for a glimpse of times gone by while so many of us are thinking of the time ahead. So, why not make yourself a cup of something and curl up with the latest handful of quirky facts from around Dorset?

Interestingly, the acclaimed engraver and designer Reynolds Stone lived for a time in Litton Cheney at the Old Rectory. Among his many works, Stone designed many notable pieces, including various postage stamps such as the hailed 1946 Victory stamp, redesigning The Times instantly recognisable clock logo and he even engraving the Coat of Arms for the Queen’s Coronation! 8

Did you know that there has been a RNLI Lifeboat station in Swanage since 1875? Previously the responsibility of the coast guard, in the early months of 1875 a storm raged causing widespread damage and treacherous conditions for a vessel travelling to Poole. Six crew were in peril and, although safely rescued, it became apparent that a permanent lifeboat and crew would need to be stationed at Swanage.

Have you heard of Isaac Gulliver? No, not the lesser known cousin of Lemuel Gulliver from Guilliver’s Travels, rather Isaac was a real person who was known for both his gentleness and his business prowess, even if it was on the wrong side of the law! Known as the ‘King of Smugglers’ in Dorset and surrounding areas, Issac and his ﬁfteen merry men smuggled tea, silk and other such contraband throughout the south, causing many a customs oﬃcer to scratch their heads! Despite his persona as King of the Smugglers, reportedly Isaac would never harm anybody and was known for his gentleness!

Did you know that the oldest golf course in the county is reportedly The Bridport West Bay Golf Club? Originally built to create a greater attraction for potential visitors to the area, golf was fast becoming a gentleman’s sport outside of Scotland. The golf course was constructed and then opened in 1891 following the development of West Bay as a tourist attraction, largely owing to the railway lines being extended. Apparently the golf course was also perfect for a quick dip at the nearby Eype at the fourth hole!

Did you know that one popular seaside resort was very nearly responsible for the demise of Sir Winston Churchill himself! As a youngster still in his teenage years Churchill fell from a bridge in Bournemouth, sustaining several injuries that left him unconscious and very nearly causing the death of one of the most influential figures of the 20th century!

Westwood Bound Our ultimate fashion visionary on the inﬂuences that have shaped her career. Dame Vivienne Westwood is an icon who needs little introduction, yet it was from such humble beginnings that Westwood found a voice. Her father was a former greengrocer; her mother a simple housewife exposing all the clichéd Cheshire charm of village life in Tintwistle, in the Peak District.

I don’t doubt I have been incredibly lucky along the way, but I know I have something in me that really spots this stuff.”

Bournemouth set to host 2022 British BMX Championships The popular south coast resort of Bournemouth will see the top BMX riders from around the UK descend on it shores over the August Bank Holiday weekend next year, as it hosts the prestigious finale to the 2022 British BMX Series. In partnership with BCP Council, the Bournemouth BMX Club was awarded the bid to host this significant event at its Iford Lane facility. This BMX facility is the only racetrack facility in Dorset and when not being used by the club, is available for public use by the growing number of people interested in this exciting sport. Bournemouth BMX Club was established in 1982, and next year’s event marks 40 years of BMX racing, with the centrepiece of the national series visiting the town for the first time since 1994. Councillor Drew Mellor, Leader of BCP Council, said: “BCP Council is proud to be partnering with Bournemouth BMX Club, one of the oldest and longest running BMX clubs in the country, to host this major event for British Cycling in the UK’s top summer tourist resort. “Next year marks the 40th anniversary of Bournemouth BMX Club and our long partnership promoting cycling and the sport of BMX locally. Whilst both the local area and indeed the sport of BMX have seen major changes over the years, the club has continued to maintain and develop the asset for public use continuously for four decades. “Hosting an elite level sporting event of this calibre is a great coup for us, especially as the interest in wheeled sports continues to grow, and as a major tourist destination I can’t think of a better place for a summer race.” Bournemouth BMX Club is going from strength to strength, with plans to improve the facility. The club continues to grow, with more than 100 racers at its Thursday evening summer club series events, and it was the top pointsscoring club in the South Region and largest club at the 2021 British Championships. The club is run by a highly professional team of volunteers who are actively involved in promoting BMX as a sport, from women’s BMXercise classes and beginners’ sessions through to coaching and hosting major events at the super-fast facility, much-loved by expert racers right up to

World Finalists! Bournemouth BMX Club chairman Michael Whittaker said: “We’re so pleased to have been asked to host the jewel in the BMX race calendar’s crown. We’re looking forward to marking our 40th anniversary, and there’s plenty to celebrate both with the local community and the wider BMX community. For us it’s all about supporting more people to ride bikes more often, whether that’s just for fun, as a way of moving around or adrenalin-pumping racing. “We look forward to welcoming British Cycling and the BMX National Series to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole next summer and to celebrating 40 years of BMX.” BMX hit the headlines this year when Team GB BMX squad’s Beth Shriever took the gold and Kye Whyte a silver medal in BMX racing, with the BMX freestyle riders bagging a gold and bronze medal. Beth then followed this up by winning the BMX World Championships. Councillor Mohan Iyengar, Portfolio Holder for Tourism and Active Health said: “I am delighted that Bournemouth has been chosen as the venue to host the finale of the 2022 British BMX Championships next summer. Such a prestigious event on our doorstep will hopefully encourage more people towards active, healthy lifestyles and support our environment through more sustainable travel. “Following Team GB’s success in the BMX events this year, I know many people will be out supporting the talented riders next year – and they may even inspire the next generation of BMX riders from across our conurbation.”

Talking about Wildlife...

The secret world of the robin The much-loved robin is one of the UK’s favourite garden visitors. Adorning Christmas cards at this time of year, the robin is a truly iconic species, often associated with winter.

Perhaps the best thing about the robin is that it’s easily identified; brown with a white belly and the famous red breast make it unmistakable, even for the wildlife novice. Often seen using gardens and local green spaces, they make their presence known with a loud, territorial song that they sing all year round, so they’re hard to miss. Whilst they can be found in the most unusual places such as plant pots, old wellies and shelves, shrubs and particularly ivy (another festive favourite!) are their favoured place for nesting. Fiercely territorial birds, during the breeding season (April to June) the female is allowed into the male’s territory where she sets up a nest of dead leaves, moss and hair. Like any other garden visitor, robins need a helping hand during the winter as they can be adversely affected by cold snaps. Robins are small, and smaller birds can often suffer the most in colder conditions. Often if a robin visits your garden just once, they are known to return time and time again. Finding food is a constant occupation for them, and whilst Ivy provides rich delicious berries, robins will appreciate any offerings you have for them in your 20

garden as the winter draws in. They are ground feeders, so try to provide food for them on a table as they will struggle to use hanging feeders. By encouraging robins (or other birds) into your garden, you will be rewarded with a display of red plumage and beautiful bird song. A coﬀee morning is also held at the Brabant Function Room on the second Wednesday of each month for our members and their partners to enjoy a relaxed and sociable get together. Welcome to the January Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include an opportunity to see four planets in our evening skies, and the Quadrantids meteor shower. International Space Station The ISS can be spotted early in the morning from the 1st - 7th. Viewing then switches to the evening skies from the 18th, with sightings between 5pm – 8pm. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your observing area.

Mercury The innermost planet can be seen low in the southwest after sunset for the first two weeks of the month. Venus Venus is also visible just after sunset, but is lost in the Sun’s glare after the first week of January. It will reappear in our morning skies in mid-January. Mars Mars can be seen just before dawn, rising around 6am. Jupiter and Saturn As the Sun sets both gas giants are visible in the southwest. Saturn sets by 6pm, and Jupiter by 8pm. They form a spectacular line of bright planets with Mercury and Venus early this month (see figure). Moon January’s full moon occurs on the 17th. A crescent Moon joins the quad of planets in a line on the 6th. Did you know? All the features on the surface of planet Venus are named after female goddesses from ancient religions and cultures, as well as famous (but deceased) real-life women, with three exceptions. Two locations are rather unimaginatively named Alpha Regio and Beta Regio, whilst the tallest mountain on Venus is named Maxwell Montes, after James Clerk Maxwell, who predicted the existence of radio waves (radar is the only way we can ‘see’ through to the surface of Venus through its dense atmosphere). Moon

Events The annual Quadrantid meteor shower peaks on the night of 3/4th January. The constellation that they are named for, Quadrans Muralis, is now obsolete, but was located where the constellation Boötes is today. The dust that causes these meteors may come from an old comet that is now classed as asteroid 2003 EH1. Unfortunately, the meteors are best seen after midnight, but it is worth having a look a few hours earlier to see if you can spot any. They originate from a point towards the north-northeast near the handle of the Plough, but will be visible throughout the sky if the weather is ﬁne. On January 4th the Earth is at its closest point to the Sun, known as perihelion. 28

Bags of Style It’s official - tiny totes are out and giant bags are in. If you’ve spent the last few years Marie Kondo-ing the contents of your handbag so you can fit it all neatly into one of the petit purses that have been supremely trendy (but impossibly impractical), prepare to be delighted. For the sartorial winds have blown once more and that which was tiny is now enormous. Put simply, oversized handbags are back in a BIG way. Devoted fashion mavens may have noticed the shift in trend last year as diminutive models appeared even more so as they hauled enormous carryalls down narrow catwalks during the autumn/winter 2021 season. New York brand Khaite boasted buttery leather shoppers that could hold a week’s worth of groceries; Tods presented us with crescentshaped totes which tucked neatly under slender arms like unfolded wings, and at Marni one red leather bag was so large it would have come as no surprise to see the model walk straight from the runway and onto her flight home.

Things got a little meta at Tom Ford and Fendi: the former showcasing a gorgeous linen crossbody bag that is so maxi and evocative of a high fashion ‘dust bag’ that you might ﬁnd yourself looking within for a smaller leather offering; while the latter has created what can only be described as a ‘shopping bag’ bag. Crafted out of pale pink leather and bearing the brand’s eponymous logo, the Fendi Pack Shopping Bag looks exactly like the kind you leave the store with except that it costs upward of £2,150. Micro bags have been du jour for so long it really isn’t surprising that things are now going the other way, though one must wonder whether recent global events have also played their part in the shift. In a world where all of your debit, credit, and loyalty cards are tucked neatly away within the conﬁnes of your slender mobile phone and all of one’s beauty needs are met with one single hardworking product, bags such as Celine’s now iconic Classic Bag (essentially a leather envelope) are ideal. Yet when it becomes essential to carry personal hand sanitising gel, face

masks and other pandemic paraphernalia, well to misquote the infamous line from Jaws: you’re gonna need a bigger tote. Post-lockdown we also have different needs as the workplace morphs and shifts into something beyond an ofﬁce. With more of us operating remotely it stands to reason you might want a bag that can stow your laptop, charger, water bottle and potentially a full hazmat suit, with a large bag becoming a kind of comforter… a home away from home in an increasingly hostile world. It all goes to show that the trend for excess – a typically predictable reaction to the stiﬂing qualities of lockdown – is real and it’s around us. And very soon, it may well be hanging off your shoulder!

Demolition of Fernheath Pavilion underway Residents and visitors to Fernheath playing fields are going to be noticing a big change in the coming days, with the demolition of the existing changing rooms taking place today (Friday 3 December). Work on a new single storey changing pavilion, café and community space to replace the existing end-of-life building will start in January.

RALPH is a 5 year old pug who loves everyone. He has a typical pug nature – he can stubborn but he is full of character. He will make a super companion. Ralph is good with children but gets over excited if they are noisy around him, so probably best not to live with them. He could live with a calm dog but no cats please. Ralph has had surgery whilst he has been with us to help his breathing which was very bad, so he cannot be exercised too much and needs a calm home. Waggy Tails Rescue are in need of more foster homes. If you are at home most of the time, have a secure garden and experienced with dogs then please give us a ring and discuss fostering for us. It is a very rewarding experience and enables us to continue helping these dogs. (no children under 10 in the house please).

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer, and television presenter Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner reveals some of his favourite buildings. It’s a funny thing when being asked for a list of favourite buildings, and I think, over time, most people will struggle to stick to a top three because our passion for architecture can really depend on what sort of mood we are in. There are certainly some days I wake up and crave the blunt, smooth, contemporary elements of the Tate Modern. Other times I might be minded to cross directly over the Thames and take in the majesty of St Paul’s Cathedral and all its ornate splendour. I think it’s important we allow ourselves that level of variation without getting too focussed on one path. It’s the same reason we can bask in sunshine one day and love the feeling of rain on our faces the next – humans, by their very design,

sway between emotions and preferences, and the places in which we live and work and exist should do likewise. That’s why I think King’s Cross station is such a perfect blend of architectural styles, of personalities, of eras, all blended so elegantly into one. The incredible side extension envelops the existing station and all its Victorian architecture in a way that ﬂits between different styles. It probably shouldn’t work, but does.

for whom it was lost under concrete and plastic. Elsewhere, I’ve always loved the Royal Festival Hall on Southbank. I know people hate it for its brutalist, modernist concrete exterior, for the mass and maze of concrete that surrounds it on all sides, and for the fact it feels like a big, aching open space once you step inside; but those are actually all the things I love about it. For something more traditional, so many of the buildings around Greenwich – from the observatory to the university – are very special indeed. The way they sprawl out onto the Thames speaks wealth and intense discovery, and you can see that within the devilish detail of the brickwork.

King’s Cross also represents the classic architect’s secret – namely that you don’t always have to build something to make it better. Sometimes just removing a building – or in this case, the 1970s front canopies – can reveal all the existing splendour lurking underneath; to re-present to a generation

For a newer building, The Gherkin is astounding. I can’t think of a single piece of architecture that feels as engaging and lucid as this. It guides the eye and glistens in the early morning sunlight. It’s very special.

Understanding Investments: What is the “right” level of risk? The definition of risk in the dictionary is “expose (someone or something valued) to danger, harm or loss”. Regarding investments it relates to the exposure to loss, which it is fair to say no-one enjoys! However, experienced investors understand that in order to achieve better longterm returns (minimum 5 years and ideally 10 years plus), they are required to take a certain degree of risk. Here are some facts, sourced by JP Morgan from Morningstar & HM Land Registry, to support this: • £50,000 in 1987 would now need to be worth £147,000 to have kept up with inflation (UK RPI). Assuming that was left on cash deposit, it would have been worth £109,516 which is a real term “loss”. This defeats the argument that cash is a no-risk investment as it virtually guarantees a loss of purchasing power, especially over the long term. • £50,000 invested in UK House prices in 1987 would be worth £348,425. There have been periods of “loss” during this time but there have been significantly more good years than bad years. • £50,000 invested in the FTSE All Share Index would be worth £705,110 (dividends re-invested). During this time there have been 11 negative years and 22 positive years for the FTSE All-Share. If we consider investment markets more widely the Standard & Poor’s 500 index in the US has suffered 6 negative years during the last 33 so has been positive in 82% of the years. The good years have definitely outweighed the bad (although this cannot be guaranteed). What other things should be considered when deciding on the right level of risk? We consider a number, each contributing to our final recommendations for clients. 1. Your intuitive attitude to risk. How comfortable would you be in a year when your investments drop in value and would you remain invested or panic and sell (thus crystalising a loss). 2. Your experience of investing. The more experienced, the more likely you will understand that negative years are simply part of investing, having experienced market falls and subsequent recoveries in the past. 3. Your capacity for loss. We can measure (through our

cash-flow tools) the actual % loss a client could suffer and still meet their Howard Goodship stated objectives. The higher the figure, the more confident a client can be that they will meet their objectives and that they can “afford” to take a certain level of risk. 4. The timescale before you require the invested capital. This is likely to result in a mix of risk levels being held; short-term cash, medium term investments balanced to your attitude to risk and if money is identified as not being required for 10/15 years plus then potentially a further step-up in risk for potentially greater long-term returns (but more shortterm volatility). 5. We also test a client’s stated intuitive attitude to risk. This is via a series of questions, the answers to which are run through an external psychometric testing tool, to identify whether a client’s intuitive responses are aligned with likely future behaviour. To summarise, taking no risk by leaving all funds in cash is actually a sure-fire way for a reduction in your saving’s purchasing power over time. Investing is a solution to that issue, albeit it comes with other risks. The degree of risk (and volatility) can be selected and controlled but cannot be eliminated. The key to a successful retirement in financial terms can be to own a balance of cash and risk-controlled investments. The optimal balance will depend on your personal lifestyle, sensitivity to fluctuations in the value of your capital and your timescale. Homespun From pressing flowers to cross stitch and papier-mâché, keep your kids entertained the old-fashioned way with these activities. Flower pressing - Pick some flowers from your garden and store them between two pieces of parchment paper. Remove and iron beneath a cloth so the flowers dry out, then store them between the pages of substantial book so they are tightly compressed. Leave for a week or so and remove perfectly preserved flowers. The same effect can be done by drying the flowers in a microwave, though they will only preserve properly once all the moisture has been taken out of them. Papier-mâché - Blow up a balloon, then soak strips or pieces of newspaper in a thin glue mixture. Removing pieces one at a time, apply them to the balloon so that, eventually, you coat the whole of it with paper, adding additional layers as you go. Allow the glue to dry and the paper to harden, then insert a pin through the paper so as to pop the balloon. You are left with a papier-mâché sphere that can be decorated as you see fit – a face, a planet, the sun… though advisably not a football! Cat’s Cradle - A simple game that relies on the dexterity of two players in order to loop a length of string in the process of

forming various shapes, each building on the last. The goal of the game is to get to the last shape without making a mistake. Pick-up Sticks - A simple game with a variety of different rules, but all revolving around needing to pick up a variety of dropped sticks or straws, without disturbing the ‘nest’. Little Donkey, Little Donkey... Ian is a member of Ferndown Probus Club and has had Summer Picnics for the club members where the Donkeys are a main attraction.

Our long dream of having donkeys of our own was realised in 1988 a few months after we purchased a house with enough land. The landlord of the Rising Sun pub at Wootton was retiring and needed to find a home for his two female donkeys, Haggis (born on Burns night) and Unity (born when some sea scouts from HMS Unity were camping on his land). A friend collected them the next day and we let them loose with his cattle that were using the land we had rented out to him. An old wooden shed was dismantled and transported to a new position and a wooden fence built so they soon had a field of their own. Sadly, about three years later, Unity developed leukaemia and, despite receiving blood transfusions, she died. She was only about 13. One of her blood donors called Susie was

Ian with JoJo & Sasha offered to us and she arrived on Christmas Eve 1991. She was with us for 25 years till her death in 2016. People are often surprised when told that 30 to 40 years is not an uncommon age for a donkey. Haggis died in 2010 aged 36 and as we have never wanted to breed donkeys and there are plenty that need good homes we prefer to foster them. Donkeys need company so we approached the Sidmouth Donkey sanctuary for a suitable companion. Before sending a donkey to us to foster both of us needed to attend a one-day Donkey Care Course. Jack Bury duly arrived but not before we had to assign ownership of Susie over to them as part of the agreement. The reasons are that if one of its fostered donkeys needs an operation at their well-equipped hospital in Sidmouth their companion accompanies them. The Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary rep visits us a couple of times per year and they are always available for help.

Jack developed cancer of the sheath but after intensive treatment he survived and after the death of Susie in 2016 two other potential companions could not be supplied. On one occasion, because of mistreatment, she would become a welfare case and the other because she was found to be pregnant. As a result we fostered both Saoirse (dob 2007) and Jojo (estimated dob 1996) as company for Jack. Both females they had been brought over from Ireland by the Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary and Saoirse’s named was anglicised by us to Sasha. Jack sadly died in 2018 aged 30. Many people are not aware that although donkeys are Equines they are quite different from horses being different species. Even some vets seem unsure of this. Their farrier is specially trained and visits every 8–10 weeks. Our donkeys are not shod but would need shoes if they did a lot of road work. The offspring of a male donkey and female horse is a mule. That of a male horse and female donkey is a hinny. Neither can reproduce.

Sasha Donkeys survive on rougher pasture than horses. We supplement their grass with Barley Straw, not hay. Donkeys are stronger than ponies (or so our farrier tells us). A typical weight of a donkey is around 30 stone. This is much more in kilogrammes when they stand on your foot. Italians use donkey meat for making salami. This is not a food we ever eat! In recent years Jojo and Sasha have been the stars at local Palm Sunday and Nativity services at Hinton Martell, Holt and Witchampton as well as at the Horton Village Hall garden party in and in December 2019 had pride of place in Wimborne Town Square for an event organised by St Johns Church. Contactless Convenience? The things worth bearing in mind when it comes to using contactless payments. Contactless card payments have brought speed and convenience to purchasing goods and services when we’re out and about; but the embracing of this technology does not come without threats… to our security, to our mental health, and to our ﬁnances. 1. Protect your card The most obvious piece of advice where contactless payments are concerned is to always know where your debit or credit card is. Where mobile payments are concerned, face or ﬁngerprint ID will make a transaction impossible for anyone other than the intended, but cards have no such security barrier, so it’s vital you protect your cards. The danger of someone taking a card and using contactless payments to buy things is a very real one, and is somewhat at odds with the various security layers we apply to

other parts of our lives and identities. Avoid this by leaving your card at home and enter its details into your phone wallet instead. 2. Check the amount Always take a second look at the amount on the contactless payment device. If the salesperson doesn’t show you the amount, ask to see it, and never let your card out of your sight. In October, the contactless limit increased from £45 to £100. That means even an accidental slip on a keypad could end up charging you up to 10 times the correct fee. Recent research found that you’re over 25% more likely to be overcharged using contactless payments than cash, so always request a receipt. 3. Use cash if funds are low If you know account funds are low, consider leaving your contactless card at home; or alternatively draw cash out of a machine.

When your balance is low it will deplete very quickly; while handing over cash has been proven to be a much strongly conscious action and is a better way for us to judge our spending. 4. Allocate one main contactless card Transport systems, most notably, will condition you to ‘tap in and tap out’, yet if you accidentally do this with two different contactless cards the chances are you’ll be charged twice. It may serve you better to use one speciﬁc card for contactless payments so you always know one account will be used in this way, which removes the risk of nasty surprises! 5. Remember your PIN It’s amazing how quickly we can ﬁnd ourselves moving away from established habits, and contactless payments have very quickly taken away the need to type in our PIN, yet any amount over £100 will still require this.

Tyres are often the most neglected element of our automotive upkeep – but the difference between decent treads and uncared-for grips could be a matter of life and death. Wearing down One of the foremost indicators that your tyre is now ready to be dumped is when it loses its tread depth. Maintaining the recommended depth on your tyre is important because loss of depth reduces grip and traction on the roads, and eventually compromises safety while driving. Keeping a tab on the tread wear indicator, which is built into the tyre, is a good way to measure the tread depth. These tread wear bars are generally invisible, but can be seen when the tyre has worn down beyond the recommended tread depth. Cracking up Cracks on the sidewall occur over time as the oils and

chemicals in the rubber compound degrade. Over time, the rubber loses its tightness and cracks begin to appear. Driving with cracks on the sidewall could also result in the tread separating mid-way or even a possible blowout while on the move – a highly dangerous scenario. Age isn’t just a number By five years old a tyre will begin to show signs of serious wear and surface damage. Always check the manufacturing date of tyres when you buy – this is usually a four-digit number printed on the sidewall. The first two numbers indicate the week when the tyre was manufactured, while the remaining two digits confirm the year. Replacing your tyres Most people replace tyres when they put their car through an MOT. It’s at this point the true extent of wear and tear is pointed

out, and faced with no other option, the average motorist will accept not just the word of the test centre, but also their recommendation of what new tyres to put on as replacements. However, if you shop around and use a price comparison website, you’re much more likely to strike a better deal. What’s more, home-ﬁtting services mean for a small call-out fee – usually about £25 – someone will come to do everything for you on your driveway. Part-worn tyres Another recent new trend has been in the part-worn tyre market, usually from cars that are due to be scrapped. The result is that rubber with very little wear can be picked up for around half the normal price, and taking your motor to one of these businesses will see your tyres ﬁtted for free as well.

Increasing numbers of homeowners are choosing to hold their properties as tenants in common to reduce inheritance tax and help protect their share from care fees The Property Protection Trust Will package is based around how you hold the ownership of your home. All good estate planning nowadays considers the difference between owning your home as joint tenants or as tenants in common. Unmarried cohabiting couples or relatives living together can also use this means of ownership as a way of minimising their Inheritance Tax exposure. It can also help with long-term care costs. If one of you is still living in your home the Local Authority can’t include its value in the means test if one of you has to go in to long-term care. This also applies if the husband or wife still living at home dies while the other is in care as their share will go into the trust.

This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about his favourite things in the garden. I think if a cross-section of people are asked to name the thing in a garden that gives them joy and a feeling of admiration beyond anything

else, a good number will choose the rose. Think about it, is there anything else that offers such a breadth of colour, such a contradiction of beauty and danger (in the sense of a seductive ﬂower and the prickly thorns that linger just a few inches down), or that offers a bouquet that has melted the hearts of a thousand romantics!

Okay, so yes, a rose sometimes can seem soand-so, perhaps because we embrace them so fully in our lives, and I accept there is something perhaps even a little cliched about the simple rose these days. However, I will be so bold as to say this - a garden without a fragrant rose isn’t much of a garden at all! For other times of the year, I will pick out certain things that give me incredible satisfaction. I look forward to these coming round, and their emergence is always very special. The first snowdrop in January; the first daffodil in February. These are the types of flowers that mark a change in or a progression of the season, and that always fills me with hope and expectation. You know these beautiful elements will always arrive, but still, it’s a relief when they do! I have also really taken a shine to the aubrieta in recent years. It’s that beautiful tumbling purple spray of miniaturecoloured flowers that will

cascade off rocks, boulders and other inhospitable lumps in a way that bring them life and beauty. The ﬂowers almost resemble little four-leaf clovers, and perhaps it’s that expression of happiness and love that makes this such a winner in every way. Finally, I would look to the sweet pea. They are just so versatile – sow individually in root trainers or in pots ﬁlled with seed compost, choose pretty much any colour across the spectrum, are perfect in borders, and you can even get the seeds in the ground in any range from November through to June. For me, they are the ultimate, and a great pleasure. Of course, tending to a garden is all about personal taste. These are some of my favourites, but I know reading this you may well feel I have it completely wrong. That’s the beauty of gardening – it’s a landscape that’s entirely yours to do entirely what you will with, and we will all agree that’s wonderful.

Guide Dogs appeal for volunteers choose. There are lots of different services on offer, ranging from volunteer-led services such as My Sighted Guide through to the children and young people’s services, access to technology, and the iconic guide dog service. The local branch of charity Guide Dogs is urgently appealing for new volunteers to sign up as puppy raisers, fundraisers or collection box coordinators and join its team of volunteers across Hampshire and Dorset. Guide Dogs relies heavily on volunteers to help improve the lives of people with sight loss and has local groups across the country. This means that people can volunteer in their local communities and make a difference, while getting involved with a fun and positive group. Hazel Kelly, Volunteering Coordinator for Guide Dogs in the area says: “Our puppy raisers and fundraisers have a crucial role in supporting guide dog partnerships. Not only are they raising awareness of our services, but they raise the vital funds needed to deliver this support and they’re raising puppies to become future guide dogs. An Island Nation It’s 80 years since the first Desert Island Discs was broadcast on BBC Radio 4, and the music and chat castaway combinations remain as popular now as it has ever been. In the fast-paced, cut-throat world of modern entertainment, it often seems that projects, shows and personalities leave as quickly as they arrive. That makes the mainstays all the more valuable and cherished, and few have stood the test of time as long as Desert Island Discs, the Radio 4 show that now celebrates eight decades on the airwaves. It was January 29th, 1942, when the programme was first broadcast, on the BBC Forces station, which was set up during World War II to assist in reporting the war effort. It was to be the first of over 3,000 shows, across BBC Home Surface, BBC Light Programme and finally on to Radio 4, its home since 1967. Creator Roy Plomley was the show’s long-time host, overseeing matters for 43 years before passing away in

1985. Michael Parkinson, Sue Lawley and Kirsty Young followed suit, with Lauren Laverne’s appointment in 2018 offering the show a modern slant. The concept, of course, is simple – what eight records would they take with them if they were to be taken to a desert island, and in the early days, guests brought their own gramophone records with them to the studio! These records then give way to a broader conversation about the subject’s life, experiences and events. Guests are also given The Complete Works of Shakespeare, a Bible or equivalent religious or philosophical tome, plus a third book of their choosing; and are permitted one luxury item as well. Even though Desert Island Discs is now approaching octogenarian status, it hasn’t been afraid to break from the norm from time to time. Dame Judi Dench’s macular degeneration

meant she was allowed to select an audiobook, while Sue Lawley allowed John Cleese to take Michael Palin with him to the island, on the condition that he was dead and stuffed! From Arthur Askey to Kenneth Williams, Terry Wogan to Stephen Fry, Adele to Morrissey, Desert Island Discs has displayed as much versatility and diversity in its guests as it has its music. Interestingly, the ever-popular theme music – By the Sleepy Lagoon, by Eric Coates – has the sound of herring gulls played over it to denote a coastal feel; yet the species is non-equatorial. Perhaps the few episodes in 1964 where the sound of tropical birds was used instead was as close as Desert Island Discs ever got to reality. Regardless, we’ll allow the fantasy of escaping with a collection of cherished records immerse us, hopefully for another 80 years or so.

Aster colleagues take on the mighty Three Peaks Challenge in aid of Dementia UK A team of colleagues from local housing association Aster Group, recently joined forces to tackle the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales, in aid of the company’s charity of the year, Dementia UK. The gruelling challenge, which involves scaling Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales needs to be completed in under 24 hours, which also includes travelling between the three mountains. The team of 15 walked 23 miles, climbed 3,064 metres and successfully raised £6,452, which includes match-funding from Aster. The challenge started with a 10-week training programme which helped the team prepare for what was to come. Team member, Jane Gallifent, development and sales director: “We did prepare well and stuck to the plan but oh my goodness… nothing prepared us for what we had to endure! It all came down to mental strength and sheer determination to complete the challenge.” Starting in Scotland at Ben Nevis the team successful scaled the 1,345 metres within five hours. Heading southwards to England, Scafell Pike was next on the agenda. The 978 metres elevation proved the nemesis for most of the team with some even 74

contemplating giving up before reaching the peak. The climb took four hours and was completed just after midnight. On very little sleep 1,085 metres high Snowdon in Wales was the last mountain to tackle. Although some team members had to run the final 100 metres, all crossed the line within the 24-hour deadline. Commenting on the team’s success Jane Gallifent said: “We have all achieved something special both individually and as a group that will stay with all of us through time. The team spirit throughout the adventure was amazing and we had a fantastic time and laughed lots; we got to know our colleagues exceptionally well and our bond will remain forever strong. We are now even thinking, what next?” Aster Group has been supporting Dementia UK as their charity of the year since April 2020. The total raised by colleagues is currently nearly £17,000.

Mary Berry’s Raspberry And Apple Muffins Method

Introduction We are lucky to live in a consumer and retail world where fruit and vegetables of every description are available to us all year round, no matter what season we are in. That means the old rules about using summer fruits in summer months have changed somewhat; so to celebrate this I’d like to bring out a traditionally seasonal recipe – raspberry and apple muffins – in these wintry times where we would, in the past, have had rather flatter, more rustic flavours. This bake is easy to do, really delicious, and is certain to put a smile on the faces of old and young alike.

Top Tip • In order to make a light mixture, stir the wet ingredients into the dry ones quickly, gently, and brieﬂy. Stop stirring as soon as they are combined. The mixture should feel light and soft. Don’t over-mix, as this will result in a tough consistency.

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan / gas mark 6). Line each hollow of the muffin tin with a paper muffin case. Warm the butter in a small pan over a low heat until it melts, then set aside to cool. 2. Tip the flour, baking powder, ground almonds, cinnamon and sugar into a large bowl and stir to combine. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs and stir in the yogurt, milk and cooled melted butter. Stir this mixture into the flour mixture, then add the raspberries and apple and stir briefly. 3. Spoon the mixture into the muffin cases. Bake for about 25 minutes or until well risen and firm to the touch. 4. Meanwhile, make the glaze: warm the sugar and orange juice in a small pan over a low heat, just until the sugar has dissolved, then increase the heat and let the mixture bubble for about 30secs so it turns a bit syrupy – not too long, or it will get too sticky. 5. Remove the muffins from the

Ingredients • 85g (3oz) butter • 250g (9oz) self-raising ﬂour • 1 tsp baking powder • 45g (1½ oz) ground almonds • 1½ tsp ground cinnamon • 115g (4oz) caster sugar • 2 large eggs • 250g (9oz) plain, full-fat yogurt • 1 tbsp full-fat or semiskimmed milk • 175g (6oz) fresh raspberries • 1 eating apple, such as Cox’s, about 150g (5½ oz), peeled and chopped into 1cm (½ in) pieces For the glaze • 2 tbsp caster sugar • 1 tbsp orange juice oven. Leave them in their tin for 1-2mins, then transfer them to a wire rack. While they are still warm, brush the top of each mufﬁn with the glaze. Leave to cool.
