With the chapter of 2020 now thankfully behind us, all eyes now look to the new chapter that is being written as we enter 2021. How better to look towards the new year than to enjoy a leaf through some of the greatest moments in Dorset that have already been written? Here are five more interesting facts from around the county. Eagle-eyed fans of the incredibly popular BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses might well notice an interesting Dorset connection to the iconic Touch of Glass episode. The grand country home of the unsuspecting Lord and Lady Ridgemere, where Grandad and the Trotter brothers created chaos when they are employed to clean the ornate chandeliers, was actually Clayesmore School. Located in Iwerne Minster, it is now one of the finest day and boarding schools in the county and boasts among its former pupils Brian Epstein, manager of the Beatles.

If you were to step back in time to the 1920s, you would see one of very largest installations in Britain of dairy machines in the pretty village of Briantspuddle. Amazingly, throughout its heyday, this Dorset village became a hive of innovation and industry when the Bladen Estate produced more than one thousand gallons of milk a day. The Estate continued to experiment with different methods to heighten the quality and quantity of the milk including utilising cardboard cartons to lighten the load on transport.
It surely wouldn’t be winter without a beautiful display of snowdrops. Among some of the most beautiful displays in the county is the village of Compton Valence’s snowdrops. Renowned both in the county and further afield, the snowdrops are widely accepted as one of the very finest displays of these delightful winter flowers and under normal circumstances, the local village hall offers a range of lunches and afternoon teas.

Have you paid a visit to the Gillingham Museum? Among its many impressive collections include the village’s first manual Fire Pump, dating back to the latter 18th century, which was almost certainly used to combat the raging fire that attacked the Purns Mill. Sadly the fire ultimately defeated the mill and burnt it to the ground however the mill itself will forever be immortalised IN a painting by John Constable which captured the mill, then known as Parham Mill, several years before the fire.
Did you know that no other than King Canute himself once used Brownsea Island as his own private base for a time after he had courageously continued his invasion and took the island’s harbour? Brownsea Island has long attracted royal attention as one dynasty followed another in Britain's history and would often be gifted to various nobles and dignitaries. One such example of this was William the Conqueror who decided to give Brownsea to his half-brother Robert De Mortain and later Elizabeth I also passed the island to one of her favourites - Sir Christopher Hatton who was reportedly rather more than a mere political acquaintance. Regal praise indeed for Brownsea Island!

Census 2021 is coming! Households across Dorset along with the rest of England and Wales will soon be asked to take part in Census 2021. The census is a ten-yearly survey that gives us the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It has been carried out every decade since 1801, with the exception of 1941. It will be the first run predominantly online, with households receiving a letter with a unique access code, allowing them to complete the questionnaire on their computers, phones or tablets. Those residents who are unable to complete the Census digitally will be supported by a phone helpline, a network of Census Support Centres or by ordering a paper Census. “A successful census will ensure everyone from local government to charities can put services and funding in the places where they are most needed,” said Philip Eades, the Census Engagement Manager for the area covered by Dorset Council.

The secret world of the robin The much-loved robin is one of the UK’s favourite garden visitors. Adorning Christmas cards at this time of year, the robin is a truly iconic species, often associated with winter.
Perhaps the best thing about the robin is that it’s easily identified; brown with a white belly and the famous red breast make it unmistakable, even for the wildlife novice. Often seen using gardens and local green spaces, they make their presence known with a loud, territorial song that they sing all year round, so they’re hard to miss. Whilst they can be found in the most unusual places such as plant pots, old wellies and shelves, shrubs and particularly ivy (another festive favourite!) are their favoured place for nesting. Fiercely territorial birds, during the breeding season (April to June) the female is allowed into the male’s territory where she sets up a nest of dead leaves, moss and hair. Like any other garden visitor, robins need a helping hand during the winter as they can be adversely affected by cold snaps. Robins are small, and smaller birds can often suffer the most in colder conditions. Often if a robin visits your garden just once, they are known to return time and time again. Finding food is a constant occupation for them, and whilst Ivy provides rich delicious berries, robins will appreciate any offerings you have for them in your garden as the winter draws in. They are

ground feeders, so try to provide food for them on a table as they will struggle to use hanging feeders. By encouraging robins (or other birds) into your garden, you will be rewarded with a display of red plumage and beautiful bird song. Ferndown PROBUS Club Ferndown, West Moors, Ashley Heath, St. Ives, St. Leonards, West Parley and District PROBUS is a club for retired men. The Ferndown branch meets on the first Wednesday of each month at Dudsbury Golf Club, Ferndown, commencing at 12 noon. Meetings comprise a threecourse luncheon followed by a talk, on a diverse range of subjects, given by invited Speakers. We also hold a coffee morning at the same venue on the second Wednesday of each month for members and their partners. Property Protection Trusts PPTs are by far one of the most common types of trusts included in wills.
The PPT is designed to take the deceased’s share in the home and give someone else (usually your spouse) a life interest in the property which will give them the protection of living in the property for the remainder of their lifetime or earlier if the trust specifies i.e. until remarriage. It also ensures that if the survivor requires long term care, at least half the property is preserved for the benefit of their beneficiaries who are normally the deceased’s children. These types of trusts are generally used for married couples or civil partners to ensure the share of the home will ultimately pass to your children at the end of the trust period whilst still ensuring the interests of the surviving spouse are protected. For example, a married couple, who have not been married before want to leave their share of their house to their children. They currently own the house as joint tenants. Dorset and Wight would sever the tenancy on the property registering them each as 50% owners. They then have their wills written to represent that if one died, their half of the property would be held on Trust for the
benefit of their children but allowing the survivor to live in their share of the property for life or a specified period of time.
So, what is the point of a PPT? The main reason for a PPT is the protection it provides for the beneficiaries i.e. your children, to ensure they are protected and ultimately receive a share of the home. If the share of the home is simply gifted to your partner directly, this could cause a number of issues – the main one being that the whole value of the house could be assessed towards payment of care fees. Another is sideways disinheritance i.e. the surviving partner remarries and the house passes to their new spouse under the Will. A PPT will enable the partner to stay in the home and will avoid the risk of the partner potentially disinheriting your children. STAR GAZING Welcome to the January Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include Mars shining brightly high in the south, the wonderful winter constellation of Taurus the Bull and his nearby companions the ‘Seven Sisters’, better known as the Pleiades star cluster. ***Warm shoes with thick socks, layers of clothes, a hat and a flask of hot tea are recommended during winter viewing!***

The ISS will be visible early in the morning between 1st and 8th January. From the 18th January it is visible in the early evening, often twice per night before 8pm. To establish exact timings please visit www.heavens-above.com or a similar web page for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to Bournemouth.
Events The Earth is closest to the Sun (a term known as ‘perihelion’) on 2nd January at 1.50pm. So why isn’t it hotter than 5°C outside?! Surprisingly, the distance between the Sun and Earth has little bearing on the Earth’s temperature. It is the 23.5° tilt of the Earth that dictates the temperature we feel – currently the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun, therefore the Sun’s rays hit the Earth at a shallow angle and their strength, which we feel as heat, is spread out over a wider area. We experience this reduction in energy as the cooler temperatures of winter.
Mercury
Visible in the evening sky, never straying far from the Sun, Mercury is tricky to spot. However, a pretty grouping (conjunction) with a sliver-crescent Moon, Jupiter and Saturn is visible to those with a clear, uninterrupted view of the south-west horizon on the 14th January (see figure). Looking out of a first-floor window may help, as will the use of binoculars to spot Saturn hidden in the twilight, but remember to only use them once the Sun has set.
Venus The ‘Morning Star’ is visible low in the south-east before sunrise, around 7.30am. Although extremely bright, it is close to the Sun and therefore hard to spot in the breaking dawn.

Mars Mars is still shining brightly in the constellation Pisces, but as it moves into Aries at the end of the month it fades rapidly. Look high in the south at 7pm on a clear night and search for a bright, orange-red ‘star’. For those with binoculars or a telescope there is an opportunity to see it close to Uranus on the 21st.
Saturn & Jupiter Both planets lie very low in the south-west and are only visible for a brief period just after sunset.
Moon This month’s full moon occurs on 28th January, and is traditionally known as the Wolf Moon. Object of the Month Winter is the time when some of our most famous and well-loved constellations are at their best. It is often worth a quick look outside on the coldest evenings as these are typically those with the clearest skies. The constellation of Taurus the Bull is one of the oldest constellations, and although it is most often associated with a number of legends pertaining to the Greek God Zeus, there is evidence to suggest that Stone Age peoples saw this particular group of stars as a bull over 12,000 years ago. The ‘head’ of the bull is the most prominent grouping in the shape of a ‘V’, with the eye of the bull marked by the red giant star, Aldebaran (‘The Follower’ in Arabic). Aldebaran is a massive star – it is 44x bigger than our Sun, and if it were placed where our Sun is today its surface would extend almost to the orbit of the planet Mercury. The Pleiades is a familiar star cluster lying close to the head of the bull. Often called the ‘Seven Sisters’, this group of noticeable stars has many legends and stories associated with it from a variety of different cultures, but interestingly many suggest the brightest seven stars in the cluster represent seven women. The Japanese word for the Pleiades cluster is Subaru, meaning ‘united’, and a logo containing six stars can be seen on the badges of Subaru vehicles.

During winter we rely on artificial lighting, so now’s the time to assess what works in your home and plan improvements. Plan lighting as early as possible A good time to upgrade lighting is when redecorating, especially if replastering. Consider adding wall lights above the living room seating in the living room for greater flexibility or mounted either side of a bed to free up bedside table space. Other options are a row of lights over the dining table, a picture light above a painting or photograph, or spotlights above your home-office desk. Light in layers ‘Layer’ lighting from several different sources and directions for both practicality and aesthetics. Professionals think of four types of lighting: general, task, accent and atmosphere, and you can mix several types in each room using a combination of ceiling lights and pendants, wall washers, floor or table lamps, and special shelf or picture lights. It is easy to introduce flexibility using floor and table lamps for better illumination at mid and higher levels around the room. Get the best bulbs Choose modern LED energy-saving bulbs – although expensive initially, they are cheap to run and should last for years. For a warm, welcoming light, look for bulbs marked around 2,700K. For brightness, consider lumens (lm) rather than wattage – use around 470lm as the equivalent to a 40w bulb, or around 800lm for a 60w bulb. Note that dimmer switches make all lighting schemes more versatile but it can be trickier to dim LEDs, so consult your electrician if you’re unsure. The latest in lighting Lighting technology is moving fast. LED lighting allows for very small, slim fittings in places that were not previously possible. Strip lights can be placed around the home to create interesting effects, while the energy efficiency of LED

Meanwhile, ‘smart’ lights that wake you up, turn on as you walk into a room or change colour in time to your music are pretty standard now, and can be controlled via an app, a remote control or even voice commands. Futuristic innovations include lighting that supports bio-rhythms via adjustable light levels and light panels that look like skylights to bring ‘daylight’ into windowless areas. Lighting regulations All electrical work in the home in the UK must comply with Part P of the Building Regulations, so for anything other than the most minor works use an electrician who is registered as a ‘competent person’. Lights fitted in bathrooms and outdoors must be specially rated, usually to at least IP44, but check with your supplier and/or electrician before installing.

Understanding Investments: Pension Options at Retirement
Retirement, and the associated ceasing of the ability to earn an income, can be a scary thought and is certainly a huge decision. Understanding the effect of inflation on your income needs throughout retirement (at 3% inflation your expenditure will double over 24 years) and other significant capital requirements needs more than a “finger in the air” analysis. At Lonsdale Wealth Management, we utilize cash-flow planning tools to help clients understand whether retirement is affordable and just as importantly, sustainable. Once affordability has been identified, decisions on the most effective way to generate retirement income can be made. There are more choices than you might think! Retirement Income is divided into secure income and flexible income. Secure income would include Defined Benefit Pension Schemes, the State Pension and Pension Annuities. Flexible income includes Pension Drawdown and income from capital and investments, with rental income classed between the two, as it is secure but can be subject to void periods. You can currently access your defined contribution pension savings any time after age 55 although the minimum age is expected to increase to 57 in 2028 and remain 10 years below state pension age thereafter. You have five broad choices and for each option, 25% of your pension savings can be paid tax-free: 1. Secure Income - Annuity Exchange your pension savings for an annuity provided by an insurance company which is then guaranteed for the rest of your life (with options including a dependant’s annuity). Annuity income is subject to income tax. 2. Secure Income - Temporary Annuity Little known but can be very attractive for those who want to retire early. Can provide a higher guaranteed income for a specific number of years (perhaps until other
pensions such as the State Pension commence) to allow the Howard Goodship balance of pension funds to remain invested. Annuity income is subject to income tax. 3. Flexi-Access Drawdown Take the income you need when you need it. The money remains invested and you draw a variable level of income for as long as your money lasts. Withdrawals are subject to income tax. 4. Cash Payment Have all your savings paid as a cash lump sum, with 75% of the fund subject to income tax. 5. Leave it for now There is no requirement to draw your savings from your pension and the fund can be passed down to a nominated beneficiary (and through different generations), often outside of your estate and therefore exempt from Inheritance Tax. The 25% tax free lump sum is lost if not taken during lifetime, but your funds can be paid tax-free on death before 75 (taxable on death after 75). As you can see, there is now significant choice available and pension savings are another tax advantageous wrapper to consider alongside other tax efficient products including ISAs. The Modern Magazines Camper Van Daichi the Dashing Dude, our wonderful, playful campervan has been looking back at 2020 and where he managed to take us, despite all the restrictions, lockdowns and worries of this last, unprecedented year. Yes, it certainly was a year of uncertainties. Daichi did not take us out every month, as the Government said, “No, there is a pandemic, protect the NHS, stay at home, save lives.” So, we all did. We sat at home, we did a lot of gardening, Netflix has never been so popular, Disney Plus made a fortune, Zoom calls to friends, family and business associates became the new ‘normal’ and Amazon, one of the biggest companies on the planet got bigger. Small, local shops closed. What a year. Well, Daichi is not to be beaten. Nine out of the twelve months of the year he took us to new and exciting places. We started at ‘Slop Bog’ in Ferndown, Dorset. It was a cool, damp day, but the walk was very relaxing. White cows, a curious calf, trees, shrubs, birds and time to chill out and have a chat while taking in our wonderful British countryside. Totally free. Daichi likes to see how many different types of places he can visit. England has such a wealth of historical sites, it would be amiss

Daichi on the ferry to the Isle of Wight to not see a British Castle! The old medieval Wardour Castle in Wiltshire was a great day out, all the way back in February 2020. Castles are inspiring places to visit and I am sure we will find another this bright New Year to show Daichi some of our memorable British history. A firm favourite of mine is the Isle of Wight. This time the weather was cold, wet and very windy so the wooden house on the cliff top was both a delight and a ‘haunt’. Waking up in the middle of the night to pitch black, then sudden outside lights appearing, was daunting, but the trip itself was pure family fun and crazy golf. Amazing views with such changing skies. We could have been abroad, but no, we were on a wonderful British ‘staycation’. There is so much to see that is right on our doorstep, or at least not that far away. Osborne House and Queen Victoria’s beach were truly uplifting. The New Forest and Lepe Beach was our first drive out after the first Lockdown. Boy, wild horses were not going to stop Daichi from getting out of that driveway! He was raring to go and beamed from wheel to wheel at all the ponies, horses, foals and cattle along the way. He was in his element. Lepe Beach and the ice cream van after months of not getting out were

39 a sight for sore eyes and we all beamed from ear to ear at this! Delicious. It was a simple trip with coffee and a picnic but most enjoyable. We were free again and that was intoxicating! A Treasure Trail was our next adventure. You can buy these online or at Information Centres and some local shops. The one we chose took us all around the Isle of Purbeck where there are Ball Clay Mines. These trails give clues and directions to find out ‘who dun it?’ and where? The stories are fictional, but the clues take you from one location to another around the area you have chosen. This one was a drive and walk trail so Daichi literally took part as he drove us over hills and winding roads, through beautiful Purbeck villages and even passed the house where the family lived that inspired the James Bond movies. Fantastic, long ranging views of greenery and perfect countryside, whilst educating us along the way. Daichi highly recommends Treasure Trails. Beacon Hill on the A34 may not seem like an exciting day out, but the views from this very steep hill and 360 degrees of pure space are breath-taking. The sheer exhilaration of climbing the 261 metre incline and then seeing the sheer expanse of hills, trees and the beautiful Highclere Castle, otherwise known as Downton Abbey, in the distance were worth every effort. Again, learning about our history and the ‘Mummy’s Curse’ when the 5th Earl of Carnarvon was bitten by a fatal mosquito after funding the expedition which finally discovered

Daichi looks over the Isle of Purbeck Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. This story has evoked many a movie since! The Earl’s tomb can be seen at the top of the hill. Taking my Mum and Dad to Docklow Pools was a real treat. Poor Dad, who is 85 now and Mum’s carer had managed on his own during the lockdown, so fishing at his favourite retreat was a delight for us all. A holiday to remember… and we are hoping to make it again this year! Finally, our year ended with two fantastic trips, one to Devon and one to Cornwall. Bovisand in Devon with spectacular sea views over Plymouth Sound and the following month a trip to Kingsand and Cawsand literally opposite, across the large expanse of water. We loved this whole area and Daichi skipped his way around the winding lanes with gorgeous beaches, watching crashing waves on the shores. It may have been a year of ‘can’t do’ and many inhibitions but in between these trying times of being careful and protecting ourselves, Daichi still found time to take us out, when it was allowed, and have some family fun. His philosophy is very much what can be done, keep a positive view, get some space, get out and about and the world suddenly seems a better place. On the Scottish island of Orkney stand the ruins of a Neolithic village called Skara Brae. A UNESCO World Heritage site managed by Historic Scotland, it is the most well-preserved village of its age in Europe. The ancient site of Skara Brae is approximately 5,000 years old and so well preserved that it is possible to get a real and rare glimpse into how our ancient ancestors lived in 3000 BC – long before Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Giza were built. Ten dwellings have been uncovered at Skara Brae, eight of them apparently homes. The village was inhabited between 3100 BC and 2500 BC probably by successive generations of families, until it was abandoned. It is recorded that the village was discovered after a particularly bad storm on Orkney in 1850. The storm washed away a large sand mound called Skerrabra, which was hiding a group of immaculately preserved circular stone structures. William Watt, the landowner, who was living at Skail House nearby, began excavations and on realising the importance of the find contacted George Petrie, the island’s wellknown antiquarian. All the finds at the site were subsequently meticulously catalogued and included beads, tools (particularly knives and scrapers) and objects that historians have only been able to speculate on, carved from stone, bone, tusks, animal teeth and wood. Radiocarbon dating in the 1970s identified the settlement as from the Neolithic Period (or New Stone Age) rather than being Pictish as previously believed. The ancient buildings are made from flat stones that have been set into mud, drystone wall fashion. The walls would originally have been around eight feet high and spaces between the earth and stones were filled with ‘midden’ – organic rubbish produced from day-to-day living including animal bone and shells. The round dwellings are linked by narrow bricklined and roofed passageways. One of the most remarkable things about Skara Brae is that the
stone furnishings of the homes are still intact, including hearths, box beds, dressers, and chairs. The settlement even had indoor toilets and drainage, which ran from each hut into a main sewer. The houses would have originally had a turf roof. Today, one of the dwellings has had its roof replaced, partly to protect it and partly to show how it would have looked. There is also a mock-up of a complete dwelling next to the museum at the site. Pottery and clay fragments found here show that the people used what is known as ‘groove ware’ – straight-sided pots and bowls decorated with grooves in patterns that have become synonymous with Orkney. The inhabitants clearly farmed and kept livestock as well as hunting and fishing. No weapons were found, suggesting the people led a relatively peaceful life. But it is likely that we will never know what they called themselves or the language they spoke, as no written records exist. Due to its remoteness, Orkney has a wealth of ancient sites including its famous standing stones and numerous burial mounds. This beautiful little island may yet be hiding many more ancient archaeological secrets.

Reading it is a bit like putting the world to rights with your best mate over a glass of wine (or three). You’ll find out about everything from Claudia’s views on relationships and parenting to her thoughts on naps (essential) and brightly coloured clothes (to be avoided at all costs). A Single Thread – Tracy Chevalier As a genre, historical fiction is incredibly varied, covering as it does every period in the last few thousand years. A Single Thread focuses on the period between the two world wars. At thirty-eight, unmarried Violet is a ‘surplus woman’, with no real place in society. However, she also has what many married women at the time did not – freedom. When she starts embroidering kneelers for Winchester Cathedral, Violet finds a way to both connect with the world and make her mark on it. The Night Bus Hero – Onjali Q. Raúf Ever read a book with an unlikable protagonist? Ten-year-old Hector is a bully. He can generally be found causing trouble or picking on someone smaller. But when he mistakenly accuses an innocent man of a crime, Hector has to decide whether to continue on his path or become the hero for once. Strictly speaking, this is another children’s book, but it’s likely to be enjoyed by anyone aged ten up. Reality and Other Stories – John Lanchester If you haven’t read any ghost stories since your teenage years, Reality and Other Stories is a good place to start. From traditional ghost stories to Black Mirror-esque tales, each story is deliciously creepy and focuses on an aspect of modern life, from a twisted reality show to a possessed selfie stick. As you’d expect, some stories are stronger than others, but overall, it’s a decent collection to keep you occupied through these long winter nights. Humans – Brandon Stanton Never bought a ‘coffee table book’ before? Humans won’t disappoint. It’s a difficult book to describe in a way that does it justice. Let’s just say that it’ll give you a glimpse of people’s lives across the globe. You’ll hear from people with differing viewpoints, discussing everything from the worst and best moments of their lives to everyday concerns. You’ll be uplifted, saddened and inspired and end up feeling just a little bit more connected to the rest of humanity. The Girl Who Drank the Moon – Kelly Barnhill Still turning your nose up at reading children’s fiction as an adult? You’re seriously missing out. Start with The Girl Who Drank the Moon. A baby is left in the woods as a sacrifice to a witch. But rather than kill her, the witch raises the child as her own. Meanwhile, the mother is left to go mad in the tower, where the real threat lies. Storytelling at its best.

A very Happy New Year to you all, and may 2021 be better than 2020! At this time of year many of us are regretting the excesses of the last few weeks, especially overindulging in food and drink. However, spare a thought for the garden birds: they won’t be overindulging and, if temperatures are low, they’ll need lots of energy to keep warm and stay alive. They are often in need of food and clean, fresh water. Most food scraps are suitable, but avoid anything which is spicy or salted and ensure it will not encourage vermin. Bread, cake or plain biscuits all make welcome treats, as do apples, which are a great source of fresh food and moisture for many birds, such as blackbirds, thrushes, sparrows and the various tits. Peanuts are very popular and the peanut feeders I have are constantly covered with nuthatches, blue tits, great tits, coal tits and even the occasional long-tailed tit or very agile sparrow. A good quality bird feeder is essential unless your garden happens to be a squirrel-free zone. I also have a small Perspex feeder for seed or peanuts that attaches to the dining room window with a sucker, which is a wonderful way to watch the birds from inside the house. General bird seed mixes are perfect for those birds preferring seeds or finding aerial acrobatics from a peanut feeder impossible. Sprinkle the mix on a bird table, the top of a wall or perhaps a garage or shed roof and you should see it being
consumed by a selection of smaller wild birds. A seed feeder with a special thistle seed mixture is said to be a favourite amongst many of the finches. Fat balls and fat blocks, either plain or containing additional seed, peanuts, fruit etc. also provide an easily accessible form of muchneeded calories, and can either be placed on your bird table or in special holders. Nowadays the thinking is that birds should be fed throughout the year (but if you do, it is essential to keep on doing it). Consider using some meatier live bird foods in the form of grubs and larvae, such as mealworms especially bred to be high-protein snacks for birds. Research reveals that both E.coli and salmonella can be found on bird tables and bird feeders if they are not cleaned regularly, and it is possible that birds could be threatened by these and other pathogens. So remember to scrub down and rinse out any bird feeding areas from time to time. Any bird foods you buy must be of good quality, preferably from a well-respected supplier or bearing the logo of the RSPB, BTO or similar respected authority.

Aromatherapy has been used for centuries to help people de-stress, unwind and get a better night’s sleep. (All benefits that most of us could probably do with after what 2020 threw at us…) If you’re trying to focus on well-being this year, our simple DIY bath and body oil deserves a place on your to-do list. Relaxing bath and body oil First off, you’re going to need a base or carrier oil, such as jojoba or sweet almond oil. These are suitable for all skin types, very moisturising and packed with antioxidants. Pour the carrier oil into a bottle. Ideally use an amber coloured, rather than clear, bottle. The oil will then stay fresh for longer as it’ll have greater protection from light. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil and geranium essential oil to the bottle. As a rough guide, you’ll need around fifteen drops of essential oil for each 30ml of carrier oil. Lavender and geranium are a match made in heaven. Together, they can help to promote a feeling of calm and relaxation. Ideally, leave your bath and body oil to ‘brew’ for forty-eight hours before using it. Then just add a splash of the oil to your bath, or massage it into your skin. It should keep fresh for a few months as long as you store it out of direct sunlight. If you’re making it for a gift, don’t forget to write the ingredients and directions on a sticky label or tag. Fragrance combinations Not keen on lavender? Other scents that
promote relaxation include bergamot, nutmeg, palmarosa, ylang-ylang and frankincense. Or if you want an energy boost, try citrusy aromas such as grapefruit, lemon, sweet orange, lemongrass and lime, or warm, spicy ones such as cinnamon, clove and cypress. Why not experiment with a few different essential oils to see which combinations you like best? (Try the blends out in an oil burner by adding a few drops to water and lighting a candle underneath.) Comforting face mask While the following recipe from Green People doesn’t include aromatherapy oils, the fragrance from the honey and lemon is both comforting and refreshing. The mask helps to nourish and soften dry skin. It won’t keep for long, so use it as soon as you’ve made it. It should prove a welcome treat after a stressful day. Mash half a medium-sized avocado, and mix it with one tablespoon of Manuka honey and one teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Massage the mixture into your face and neck. Then lie back and relax for fifteen to twenty minutes, before rinsing the mask off with warm water. Safety tips To avoid irritation and other side effects, don’t apply undiluted essential oils directly to your skin. When you’re diluting them in oil, keep them under 3% of the total mix. Some essential oils are not recommended during pregnancy, so do check the bottle.

“Looks like everyone’s had the same idea.” Sandra took a swig from her can of pop and drew a sad face on the steamed-up passenger window. “Not how I wanted to spend my Saturday.” They’d been sat in a queue of traffic outside the recycling centre for what seemed like hours, watching as car after car unloaded their discarded Christmas trees. “Look lively, we’re up next,” Terry said, turning his engine back on as the car in front of them was waved through by a man in a high-vis jacket. “We’ll unload the tree and get out of here.” Terry released the handbrake to edge forward but the man held up his hand for them to stop.

Can’t you show a little flexibility?” Terry continued, sensing that he had this chap on a hook. “You know it’s the decent thing.” He heard a voice from a car behind him shout “Hear, Hear!” and knew he was winning.
“What is it now?” Terry said testily, winding down his window.
“Alright,” the man nodded. “I can’t let you drive in but give me what you’ve got and I’ll take it in for you.”
“Sorry, mate.” The man leaned on the car door. “We’ve reached capacity.” “What’s that supposed to mean?” Terry said. “I’m only allowed to let fifty cars through today.” He shrugged. “And you’re fifty-one.” “We’ve been sat here twenty minutes,” Terry protested. “You’ve been stood not two yards away, surely you could have told me that when I pulled up?” “Should have read the sign.” The man pointed to an unreadable laminated sheet tied to the gate. Terry gripped the steering wheel; he felt that if anyone looked at him right now they’d see steam coming out of his ears. “I’m not having this,” he said through gritted teeth, opening his car door. “Come on Sandra, we’re getting out.” “I suggest you get back in your car, mate.” The man held up his hands. “And come back another day.” “Firstly, I’m not your mate,” Terry said. “Secondly, we’ve queued here in good faith, and thirdly, you are taking our recycling today.” Drivers in the queue behind them began to take interest in the proceedings. Some wound down their

It was empty. “Where’s the ruddy tree Sandra?” Terry whispered through clenched teeth. “I asked you to put it in the boot.” “Did you?” Sandra shrugged. “I thought you were doing it.” “What exactly did you want me to take?” The man scratched his head. “This!” Terry snatched the empty can from Sandra’s gloved hand. “Just that?” the man asked incredulously. “I think I can manage that.” “We’ll be off then.” Terry slammed the boot of the car. “Just doing our bit for the planet.”

Makes 4 Ready in 20 mins INGREDIENTS • 500ml non-dairy milk (see Tip) • 2 tbsp cornflour • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 2-3 tbsp maple or agave syrup • Few drops vegan yellow food colouring • 100g vegan granola • 1 large banana, peeled and sliced • Mint sprigs, to decorate TIP Almond, oat, coconut or soy milk will all work well in this recipe.
These delicious dairy-free sweet pots are perfect for an energy-boosting breakfast or a simple dessert. 1. Mix 6 tbsp of the non-dairy milk with the cornflour and vanilla extract in a jug to make a smooth paste. Gradually stir in the rest of the milk. 2. Pour the milk mixture into a medium saucepan and slowly bring to the boil over a medium heat, stirring all the time. The mixture will gradually thicken but keep stirring to prevent any lumps forming. Continue cooking over a low heat for 2-3 minutes until you have a smooth thick sauce. Stir in the maple or agave syrup and a few drops of food colouring to give a custardyellow colour. 3. Divide half the granola and nearly all the banana slices between four small heatproof serving dishes. Spoon over the custard and top with the rest of the granola and banana. Decorate each pot with a sprig of mint and serve warm or cold.
