There are also our wonderful beaches and the amazing New Forest with those beautiful horses, ponies, cows and wildlife. We are so lucky to live in such a gorgeous part of our Island, with so much to see and do. At home there is always a lot to do. Gardening, housework and upgrading our environment to make the most of the space that we have. Do you need any help with all of that? Ferndown Slimmers lose 1,520 stone!
2018 has been a great year for Slimmers in Ferndown and West Parley as they have lost over 1,520 stone,(nearly 10 tons in weight)! Approximately 550 members walk through the doors of the local Slimming World groups every week to get the support from their groups to help them achieve their dream weight and live a happier, healthier, longer life! ‘We see life changing things happen on a weekly basis in group’ says Zoe Kemp, the Consultant who runs the Ferndown Tuesday and Thursday groups. ‘The group environment offers the best possible way to help you lose weight in a healthy way. We have all sorts of different members, men and women, young and old. We have people who come along who want to lose a stone and people who want to lose 10 stone! They all offer each other support and practical tips and new recipes to help keep them motivated! My members often tell me they couldn’t do it without the help of group! ‘ If you’ve been thinking of joining Slimming World the good news is that there’s lots of choice of sessions and different days to suit and they are all welcoming new members. Flock to Poole Harbour
January is traditionally a dark and dismal month, but for over-wintering birds, this is a busy time of year, and Poole Harbour is one place we can guarantee will be bursting with (bird) life.
During late summer and autumn birds start arriving back onto the Brownsea Island lagoon to over-winter. The unique location of the lagoon means it provides shelter and food sources in abundance, but its shallow waters mean it’s also still accessible for birds when the rest of the harbour is under deeper water. It’s also a thoroughfare for birds flying from far flung corners of the globe, who use the lagoon to rest and eat before migrating to other winter habitats. In the past we’ve recorded rare sightings of the semipalmated sandpiper, and in October we were treated to a sighting of the small sanderling visiting from its arctic breeding grounds. A favourite and frequent visitor to the lagoon is the spoonbill. For many years the spoonbill flock sizes have been building, and in 2014 it peaked to the largest flock of spoonbills ever seen in Britain, with 49 birds recorded in one flock. and easily identifiable guests are large flocks of waders, particularly avocets, which are distinguishable by their long blue legs and curved bill, perfect for si�ing through the mud for fish. They breed in east Anglia, France and Germany but the number seen on the Brownsea Lagoon is of international importance, where 1,200 or more can be seen in the winter. The black-tailed godwit breed in Iceland but can be seen through the year on Brownsea Island, with up to 2,500 visiting in the winter to feed on worms found in the lagoon. A unique partnership between Dorset Wildlife Trust, RSPB, National Trust and Birds of Poole Harbour has been set up to run boat trips around Poole Harbour during the winter months, so visitors can get a first-hand experience of the thousands of birds feeding and roosting on the Brownsea Island Lagoon, when the rest of the island is closed for winter. Lighthouse School Partnership with Ferndown Middle School This year Ferndown Middle School has become a partner school with Poole Lighthouse. We are only one of nine schools to receive this honour. This gives the school a unique opportunity to work on a variety of exciting projects with Lighthouse and their partners over the school year. In November a group of year 8 pupils attended Othello. After the show they were interviewed by the Lighthouse and representatives of the theatre company to create a blog and critique of the play for social media and to provide feedback for the Theatre Company. The Merchandise stand, designed and made by pupils from Ferndown Middle School last year, was refurbished and adapted and will be used from the middle of November to promote and advertise this year’s pantomime at Lighthouse. It will then go back to its ‘day job’ as the Merchandise Stand over the Christmas Pantomime season. It is Lighthouse’s 40th Anniversary this year and 17 pupils from year 7 and 8 have been involved in a project commissioned by Lighthouse to commemorate this event. We also approached Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) to help us with this commission and have secured the services of five final year illustration students. The brief is to create an exhibition illustrating some of the key events from its 40 year history. Lighthouse provided us with scrapbooks of memorabilia, artefacts, news stories and events the students chose an event and have illustrated this. A project like this would certainly benefit from the services of a professional illustrator
and we had the amazing opportunity to work with Martin Brown. Martin has been the illustrator for the ‘Horrible Histories’ books for the past 25 years, he is also a writer and cartoonist, and joined us at school for the day. He gave our students and the students from AUB a drawing masterclass and then spent the day inspiring, helping, advising and sharing his talent of bring history alive through his illustrations and cartoons with the pupils. This day was followed up with a visit to the Arts University where the pupils completed their artwork and illustrations. Martin also joined us at the University where the pupils worked alongside the undergraduate students to create some excellent work. The results can be seen at Poole Lighthouse from early December until February 2019. The pupils were a credit to the school and Martin wrote a complement slip describing them as “Talented, motivated and fun students who made me feel totally welcome” and “I had a BRILLIANT day”.

Russell & Charlie’s Alternative 3 Sleeps Raises over £1300! Russell and Charlie from Go Ape Moors Valley summited and slept on three of the UK’s highest mountains to raise over £1,300 for the John Thornton Young Achiever’s Foundation (JTYAF). The JTYAF is the nominated charity at Go Ape and Russell and Charlie are great supporters of the Foundation. They set out on the 557-mile journey from Dorset to Fort William in November and had selected Helvellyn, the 3rd highest peak in England, Aonach Beag which is second only to Ben Nevis and Glyder Fawr, the 5th highest mountain in Wales. The routes they had planned to the top of the peaks included ridges and scrambling, a great deal of which was at night. In addition to the climbs, three extreme sleeps provided the ultimate challenge. They began with their ascent of Aonach Beag, at 4,049ft. The weather conditions were horrendous with such strong winds that they nearly lost their tent! The next morning, they travelled to the Lake District to tackle Helvellyn (3,117ft), in rain and relentless gusting winds and finally to North Wales where Glyder Fawr presented them with more rain and 80mph winds. The weather conditions confronted Russell and Charlie with an even more demanding challenge than expected but they showed real courage and total commitment and determination to get the job done.

Their challenge symbolises all the charity values; courage, determination, unselfishness and cheerfulness in adversity. It has been suggested to me that I give my house to my children to reduce the value of my estate for Inheritance Tax. Should I do it?
In order to avoid this then you would have to pay market rent to your children for living in their property.
As a homeowner you are free to transfer your property to your children at any point, however doing so is far from straight forward, especially if you wish to continue living in the property.
Other important issues to consider are that: (1) you will no longer be the legal owner of the property and you would no longer have any say on what happens with the property
If you give your property to your children as a gift, you will need to survive for 7 years from the date of the gift for the value of the property not to form part of your estate. However, should you pass away within those seven years then the property would fall back into your estate for inheritance tax purposes.
(2) your children may become bankrupt or
Should you continue to live in the property after gifting this to your children, then the house would remain part of your estate on your death, even if you live beyond seven years.

Care South renews partnership with AFC Bournemouth for fifth year Care South is delighted to renew its partnership with AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust.
Cherries winger, Marc Pugh and Head of Community Sport Trust, Steve Cuss visited residents at Care South’s Fairlawn care home in Ferndown, where they also met with the charity’s Chief Executive, Simon Bird, to officially announce the continued partnership, which is now in its fifth year. The partnership with AFCB encourages staff and residents of Care South’s care homes and Home Care service clients to participate in activities where they can meet players, enjoy coffee mornings and become involved in walking football and stadium visits. Marc Pugh, an integral member of the AFCB squad and ambassador for the partnership, spoke to the residents about the incredible start to the 2018/19 season AFC Bournemouth has had. Head of the Community Sports Trust, Steve Cuss said: “Care South residents always give Marc a fantastic welcome. He is a huge supporter of this partnership, and that’s what makes him such a great ambassador. He and the Community Sports Trust team are looking forward to visiting as many residents as their schedule allows, and showing his football skills to the residents and seeing a few of theirs.”

Understanding Investments: Fees, Costs and Value
January 2013! I repeat… January 2013! In the investment and advice world, this was a monumental date and is ingrained in memory. I believe it should be for savers too. In January 2013, the Retail Distribution Review (RDR) took effect. This was designed to empower the consumer by defining the type of financial advisor you might be working with and removing commission from investment products. In addition, it raised the bar on the qualifications required to deliver financial advice, leading to higher professional standards. It was a great day for consumers but appears to have gone under the radar for most. So what does it mean for you? Independent or Restricted Financial Advice? “Independent Financial Advisors” (IFAs) are able to consider all types of retail investment products from all providers across the market when offering you financial advice. “Restricted Advisors” can only recommend certain products or product providers i.e they can only offer products from one company, or just one type of product. Fees vs Commission Investment costs are now much more transparent for any new investments made since January 2013 and costs maybe lower. That journey is continuing in the right direction for consumers. Right now, it should be made clear what fee % you are paying your investment managers and what fee you are paying your advisors (these should be separated for transparency). In 2019 there is good news for clients as it will become even clearer when financial advice firms are required to convert this % into pounds and pence. However, many older products recommended pre-RDR (that’s right; pre- Jan 2013!) are still charging commission and investors are paying this to the advisor who arranged the product. This is because the ban on commission introduced by RDR only applies to new business. It is entirely possible that a client who invested in a fund pre-
Jan 2013 is paying substantially more every year than a client who invested in the same fund Howard Goodship post-Jan 2013. Some fund groups are willing to switch without cost between these different units and this is something an advisor can review for a client. Costs and Value Are you charged for the financial advice you receive or the money you invest? Impartial advice is all about doing what is right for the client. If that results in a recommendation to continue doing exactly what you have been doing and make no changes to your investments or strategy, then that is the advice which should be delivered. Unfortunately, if an advisor only gets paid when you make changes or invest new money, it creates an unhealthy conflict of interest. To avoid this conflict, you could consider working with a financial advisor who is willing to separate out fees for financial advice from fees to implement that advice. In conclusion, paying for the right advice can often end up saving clients significant costs, especially as many of these costs are recurring year in, year out. I don’t know anyone who enjoys paying professional fees to an accountant, solicitor or financial advisor, but with the choice of investment solutions being wider than ever, the need for high quality investment advice is greater than ever. Talbot Village Trust enables extension for MS Society Bournemouth Talbot Village Trust has donated a grant of £11,000 to the Multiple Sclerosis Society Bournemouth to fund the extension of its day centre.
The grant giving charity provided the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society with the funds required to construct a muchneeded extension onto the original Osborne Day Centre. The centre is used regularly as a meeting place for people with MS, their carers and volunteers. Members of the society also have access to physiotherapy, yoga and hairdressing facilities at the centre. The new extension has created the space for a private consulting room which is available to provide confidential one-to-one support. A disabled toilet has also been constructed within the extension, due to the growing number of people that use the centre on a weekly basis. Rod Slip, chairman of the MS Society Bournemouth, said: “We are so thankful to the Trust for choosing to donate to the centre and allow us to construct our extension. Before this project began we were restricted on the activities which we could host, but now we
have the extra space to strengthen our support services and activities offering.”
Russell Lucas-Rowe, Trustee of Talbot Village Trust, added: “As a Trust we are always looking to support charities, big and small, that play an integral role in the community. Keeping it in the (Lions) family Last month saw the enrolment of two new members to the Wimborne and Ferndown Lions Club which brought the total of new members enrolled this summer to four and the club membership to 22. It has indeed been a bumper summer in more ways than one. The picture shows new members Lena Garrett and her partner Daniel Whittle, with other Lions watching as Daniel is “badged up� by Lion Ken Taylor. The other new members are Jane Beck and Roger Male.
It is worth noting that all four have helped to bring the club average age down significantly. This enrolment was a very special occasion as Daniel is the son of Lions legend Albert, who was a founder of the club in 1969 and served as a Lion for 48 years until his death in October 2016. Apart from being a champion speed skater in his youth, Albert held all the major offices of the club, being elected president three times and district governor at one time.

On Your Plot Planning veg for the year ahead If you’re new to veggie growing then this is the ideal time to start planning for the year ahead. Think about what space you have available for your crops and plan what you would like to grow and where.

• Plan your crops • Protect crops against the cold and from pests such as pigeons • Sew le�uces indoors • Start rhubarb crowns Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect time to plan what to grow and where this season. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that still leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about concentrating on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again. Remember also that you can use patio containers and grow bags to add extra growing space. Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great time of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room
for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the be�er and higher beds will mean less bending when you are planting out seedlings, harvesting or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil, awaiting planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plastic, or cardboard, to protect the soil against the harsh January weather. Crops still growing, such as purple sprouting broccoli, will benefit from protection against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CD’s). For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few le�uces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free conditions such as a shed, or polytonal before finishing off under cloches. If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot. Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before planting. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for starting tiny seedlings off in months to come as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disruption as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.

ROASTED ACORN SQUASH Ingredients for 4 servings: 1 large acorn squash ½ tsp smoked paprika 2 cloves garlic (minced) Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ tsp mustard powder ¼ tsp onion powder 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp unsalted butter ½ red onion 1 tbsp olive oil 2 oz (60 g) soft goats cheese Small handful fresh mint Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 400F/200c 2. Cut the squash into 6 wedges leaving the skin on. Remove the seeds and place onto a baking sheet skin side down with the flesh facing up. Drizzle the wedges with olive oil and add the butter then sprinkle over the paprika, garlic, mustard and onion powder and season well. 3. Cover the tray with foil and make sure that it is pressed down well so that the wedges are sealed in. Place the tray into the oven to bake for 45 minutes; they will actually be steaming in their own juices at this point. 4. Meanwhile slice the onion and place into a frying pan with the olive oil, gently sauté the onion slices on a medium low heat until they are caramelized, set to one side. 5. After 45 minutes of cooking remove the squash from the oven and remove the foil cover, place back into the oven for 10 minutes to roast, after ten minutes top each wedge with caramelized onions and some crumbled goats cheese and place back into the oven for a further 5 to 10 minutes until golden brown. 6. Remove from the oven and transfer to a serving plate, sprinkle with freshly chopped mint and serve.
