There is only one ground for a divorce and that is that the marriage has irretrievably broken down. This is then supported by one of five facts, those being:1. Moors Valley Railway and Play Trail top public vote The Moors Valley Railway and Play Trail have been voted joint first in a poll to discover the public’s favourite activity at the third most visited country park in England. Throughout the year visitors have been voting for the things they love most at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest near Ringwood. Their top 25 have now been announced marking the culmination of the Park’s 25 year celebrations. Top of the list, Moors Valley Railway was the first attraction at the Park to be opened to the public and clearly remains a firm favourite more than 25 years on. It offers visitors the chance to enjoy a ride on an authentic steam train, travelling along the lakeside, through tunnels and over a bridge. Tieing with the railway, in joint fi rst place, the mile-long Play Trail offers hours of outdoor family fun aschildren enjoy healthy activity and build their confidence scrabbling on its exciting wooden play structures. Value for money also made it into the top five, with parking charges not deterring families looking for a great day out with no admission fees.
Countryside Interpretation Ranger Katie Davies said, “As we reach the end of our 25 year celebrations we are really pleased to know that people appreciate the family-friendly focus of the Park. It’s great to see a wide range of different experiences in the top 25, ranging from the ‘paying’ attractions like Go Ape and the Segways to more simple activities such as the lakeside walks and enjoying an ice cream.” Looking to the future, 25 commemorative trees are to be planted around the Park’s newest play structure, the house of Baba Yaga. And the fun will continue in 2014 with lots more family-friendly activities, including the arrival of a very special visitor to Moors Valley Country Park in the New Year. Please be aware that during the winter months Moors Valley Railway runs only at weekends and that other features may be closed for essential maintenance. Medals Haul for Ferndown Schoolgirls Sisters, Katy Norman (14) Ferndown Upper School & Poppy Norman (11) Ferndown Middle School, are very proud to be the winners of a number of medals at a recent swimming gala. The Bournemouth Sea Cadets took part in a recent inter cadet group regional swimming gala and both Katy & Poppy won their respective events. This saw them automatic entry to the Southern Area Finals Gala, which was held at the Royal Military College in Sandhurst. After an exciting day competing in various events, Katy bought home Gold, Silver & Bronze individual medals and she also shared in a trophy for Best Junior Girl. Meanwhile Poppy scored a great success and also secured silver & bronze medals in her events.
The Bournemouth Sea Cadets, where Katy is a member of the Royal Marine Cadets and Poppy a Junior Sea Cadet, were very proud and pleased to have been so well represented at these galas.

Partnership success for Health Promoting Hospitals initiative This year the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was involved in the launch of a new initiative to improve the quality of care for patients with long-term conditions. ‘Health Promoting Hospitals’ is a partnership between the Trust and other key providers of health and social care, including Dorset Healthcare, Clinical Commissioning Groups, Dorset Police, BH Live and Carers UK, and reflects how health care in communities is changing. Hospitals no longer just treat and discharge patients, but are involved in providing education and advice so patients can understand and manage any long-term medical conditions throughout their lives. A high number of hospital readmissions and health complications can be prevented if patients are empowered to self-manage their long-term conditions and if providers of health and social care are fully involved in the process. The Trust is now part of the International Network of Health Promoting Hospitals established by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Health promotion aims to improve the health of individuals and communities through education, behavioural change and environmental improvement. Under the Health Promoting Hospitals scheme, the Trust provides a range of health advice which has not only had an impact on patients, but their families, staff, partner health providers and the wider community. Activities included in the Health Promoting Hospitals initiative are: Community education programmes • Understanding Health events - these popular events are completely free to the public and give valuable insights into topics that may otherwise be difficult to understand. • Health awareness seminars hosted in conjunction with other health care providers such as Carers UK, Stop Smoke and the British Heart Foundation. • Health information available via the Trust website www.rbch.nhs.uk. Patient health promotion programmes • Partnership with LV= Streetwise - the Trust has introduced a hospital ward scenario to the interactive safety centre, Streetwise, aimed at schoolchildren. • Introduction of a new senior citizens tour at Streetwise - attendees take part in a two hour interactive session aimed at preventing slips, trips and falls. • Move to Improve programme - patients from the Trust’s rheumatology and fibromyalgia clinics are directly referred into rehabilitation clinics for six week taster sessions offering techniques such as Tai Chi and relaxation classes.
The hospital ward scenario which forms part of the Streetwise interactive safety centre • Back Fitness Programme and Back Club - supporting patients with persistent back pain. • Trust-led rehabilitation programmes offered at BH Live leisure facilities. The construction of musculoskeletal rehab centres based at the Littledown Centre and Pelham’s Park Leisure Centre are due for completion in spring 2014. • Pelham’s Park Leisure Centre hosts pulmonary rehabilitation classes two times a week to provide support to people with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and chronic lung disease. It is not only patients and the public benefiting from the Health Promoting Hospitals initiative. Staff now have access to a variety of programmes including fitness classes, walking groups, healthy eating seminars and immunisation schemes. Trust Chairman Jane Stichbury said: “Working with other providers of health and social care as part of this initiative is extremely positive. Ferndown Stroke Club receives an award from the Stroke Association This was the Life After Stroke Awards held by the Stroke Association to recognise and celebrate the lives of those affected by stroke. Ferndown Stroke Club was nominated in the category of ‘Stroke Club’ and received a Highly Commended award The club is a community group affiliated to the Stroke Association and aims to provide members with a place to meet and relax with other stroke survivors as well as providing education and information on strokes and life after a stroke.
The club meets on the third Wednesday of the month at the Ferndown Guide Hall (by St Mary’s Church) from 10.30 to 12.30. New members are always welcome. The picture shows some of the club members proudly displaying their Award.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Wow what weather we have had recently! Nellie was all set to take us to The New Forest Wildlife Park, to see the deer and other animals, but the park was shut due to storm damage. We hope the owners have managed to sort everything out and we promise to visit in the near future. Not to be put off we decided that Nellie was still to have a run around the New Forest, after her stay in the garden over Christmas. On the planned day, upon waking, the sun was shining and it all looked perfect to see the wonderful sights of the open land and deep forestry so near to us. Unfortunately, as none of us in the family are particularly keen morning people, and taking such a long time to have breakfast and get ready, by 11.38am when we finally left the house, the sun had totally disappeared… in fact just as we set off the rain started to pour – again! Mum and Dad had come to stay with us for Christmas, so we all went, with Mum and Dad following in ‘The Matrix’, much like our holiday on the Isle of Wight in the summer. Nellie was not perturbed by the rain and suitably stopped at the viewpoint just as you enter the New Forest from the A31 at Picket Post. It really is a fantastic view

Nellie admires the views and if you ever need some space to relax, chill out or reflect, then this is a good place to go. It would be a great place to make those all important New Year’s Resolutions! Last summer we were at this very same point and a New Forest pony came along and started eating the picnic of a very frustrated family, as you can see in the photo! Since the weather was very different at this time, we continued on our journey, to Burley. Burley really is somewhere special. In the summer there is a horse and cart to take you through the countryside, but today there was not so much activity, though all the quaint shops were open. We just had to take a look in each of them of course. Hayden bought the most cute pair of Sloopers at The Old Shed (not slippers, no I didn’t make a spelling mistake, just in case you wondered…). They are very much like a pair of jesters’ shoes and anyone who has been to the house and seen them on Hayden’s growing feet, has remarked how much they like them. They were a bargain at just over half price. Hayden bought them himself with some of his Christmas money. Money well spent – and not on an electronic game! Oh yes I bought an

Hayden with his Sloopers from The Old Shed Elvis Christmas CD to play in Nellie on the way back. Sad but true I am afraid – it was the 28th December so I thought I could just about get away with it. After all the shopping excitement we went for lunch at The Burley Stores. Dad, who is a truly northern man and loves his sea food, opted for the breaded whitebait. He was not disappointed, the plate was full and thoroughly enjoyed! We all watched through the window as another downpour of rain soaked the village. (I couldn’t resist taking a photo of a place mat in one of the shop windows…) I was determined that we would stop for a cup of tea in Nellie, so off we went, back to the viewpoint, and on went the whistling kettle. With the roof up, Hayden ‘upstairs’ and the front seat turned inwards, which is really useful, there was just enough seats

for all of us to enjoy a cuppa and admire, albeit in a way that we were glad to be under cover, the glorious, if rather damp looking views in front of us - with Elvis softly singing away in the background. We would never have done this without Nellie, as a car is just not the same. The van brings us all together no matter the weather and in true British style we enjoyed ourselves despite the rain! We didn’t of course stay overnight in Nellie on this trip. I say ‘of course’ as we may well have been blown dramatically down the hill with all the high winds we have had recently. There are in fact many caravan parks and campsites in the New Forest area. Stephen’s parents will

Stephen’s sister will also be staying in her new bright yellow VW Campervan named Jessie Phyllis after her two late Grandmothers. That will be a story to tell! The Legion of Frontiersmen The Legion of Frontiersmen dates back to 1905 and was originally formed by one Geoffrey Peacock, a former junior officer in the Royal North West Mounted Police. Its objective was as a paramilitary force to assist in the protection of what was then the British Empire and although first set up in Canada where it had some 10,000 followers it also took root in Britain, particularly in the South of England and in Wales where Legion groups were set up, all of them volunteers. It had a formal headquarters in London. At the peak of its popularity there were some 75,000 members throughout the British Empire.
With the onset of the First World War the Legion became an integral part of both the regular forces and also began what later became the British Secret Service. The 25th Royal Fusiliers Regiment in 1915 was made up almost entirely of Frontiersmen and undercover work was carried out in Europe by members in various guises. During the First World War some 9,000 Frontiersmen lost their lives in several of the fields of conflict. Between the two World Wars the membership dwindled having also been decimated by the Great War. It remained in existence and had many notable and distinguished

members including MPs, Generals and Professionals graced its ranks. With the looming Second World War fresh recruitment took place and this was enhanced by the membership of Lord Louis Mountbatten and the active support and promotion by Lady Mountbatten who saw the potential for members of the Legion to support home forces when invasion looked all but inevitable. The new membership consisted largely of those too old for active service, particularly if they had served in the First World War, and some with minor disabilities that would otherwise rule them out for active service. In addition men served as Air Raid Wardens (ARP) and as members of the LDV (later to become the Home Guard). The Legion in Britain was supplied with equipment and uniforms by the North West Mounted Police in Canada and all gave their time, training and skills on a voluntary basis often whilst holding down full time jobs. In Hampshire and Dorset there were several units and one of their main tasks was to patrol the New Forest, the heathlands and open common ground where normal military patrols would be unlikely to be able to operate but where an airborne attack might easily be made. Locally there were two units and the
nearest operated from the Longham/ Parley area consisting of about twenty offi cers and men. Of that unit all but three were members of the Home Guard in addition to their Legion duties. The remaining three were Air Raid Wardens operating from a base near the Longham Bridge. The photograph opposite is of 12 members of that unit. It will be noticed that one member, wearing medals, is without a horse. He was the Captain of the unit and this picture was taken at Longham just prior to their participation in a Sunday Parade. The other member without a horse (to the left of the picture) was the farrier. I am able to identify two of the members, one of them being my father who was also a Captain in the Home Guard, but I would invite anyone who is able to recognise any other members from the picture, or who has any other information regarding the local unit to contact me with a view to trying to recover more history of the Legion and of this fascinating but little know piece of local history. I do incidentally know that all those in the picture came from Colehill, Wimborne, Parley or Ferndown and the date would have been in April of 1941. Panto Review
He’s behind you!!! Oh yes he is!! Yes, it was panto time again and Bournemouth Pavilion did itself proud once more. Twenty two of us joined the thirty two prize winners from Dorset and Purbeck Publications on the press night (making ourselves heard when announced towards the end!). Aladdin, this year’s story, was superbly directed by Chris Jarvis, who also played Wishee Washee. The production had everything we love about panto... Jokes for the parents, fun for the kids and a great use of current chart hits adapted to fit the story. Scott Maslen was the suitably evil, but quite sexy, Abanazar, trying his best to thwart Aladdin. Richard Vincent gave a stellar performance as Aladdin with outstanding vocals and high energy. Jamie-Lee Mason was the beautiful Princess Jasmine and she too gave stunning vocal performances. There were great special effects with Aladdin flying all over the world on his magic carpet
and the evil Imax instructing Abanazar how to get the power of the universe. Bobby Crush gave a hilarious performance as Widow Twankey and even entertained us with his fantastic piano playing. Those of a certain age Scott Maslen as may remember him Abanazar winning Opportunity Knocks with this particular talent. The whole cast gave outstanding performances to make the evening magical. Pantomime really is the best way to get into the Christmas spirit. There was fun and laughter for all the family and I am looking forward to next year’s panto already!
