4 Dear Neighbours, I do hope you like our front cover photo. This is Abby, a friend of ours daughter, Edition 107 in her first show jumping competition at the Parley Equestrian Centre! She absolutely loved it. Well done to photographer Andrews Simms from ANS Photography and well done Abby! So here we are in February 2015. We seem to be doing Debbie & Stephen Corney well as far as the weather is with our son Hayden concerned. I wonder if we will get away with a relatively mild winter, or will that snow from America arrive much to the children’s delight? I do remember an April, not so long ago when we had quite a lot of snow, then last year I think was quite sunny in April, so who knows? Whatever it will be we will manage I am sure. Nellie took us to the Wareham Forest for a Geocache this month. What fun we had finding all the clues and using the GPS to guide us along our way. If you haven’t tried this before and like walking we highly recommend it. You can see “The Adventures of Nellie”, the Dorset Publications Campervan, on pages 26 and 27. Following my New Year’s Resolution to sort the house out we have started to throw those unwanted items away. I have to say there is a lot to do! Ann - What is the show about? Flavia - “Glamour murder, comedy, and of course super dancing?” Ann - Now tell me, do you both audition the dancers for your own shows? Vincent - “We do, but it’s easy as everyone wants to do their best, and that way we end up with the best dancers.” Ann - The costumes are all wonderful too did you have a hand in selecting them? Flavia - “Well I want glamour all the time, and every time I and Vincent do a scene, I want the wow factor from dance, and then the costumes.” Ann - Do you miss appearing on SCD? Both - “Of course. We did it for over ten years, but while we miss it, and owe it so much, we also felt we had done all we could with it.”

Talking about Wildlife...
Wildlife is counting on you! How many wildlife sightings do you have every day? If you were to write it down, you’d be surprised how many wildlife encounters you have! For all novice or experienced wildlife enthusiasts out there, Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT), as part of the Great Heath Living Landscape project, has launched ‘Species of the Month’ – a project to help us record vital information about wildlife on your doorstep. Every month we’d like to receive your sightings of one new species we need data for- all you have to do is send us your sightings of that species. Receiving sightings from all around Dorset allows us to get a bigger, better picture of where wildlife is in the county, so we can manage our conservation work more effectively. We will feature rarer species, lesser known species and the common species too and to help you get ahead with your counting, we will include a factsheet with tips on how to attract the species of the month in to your garden. Garden acreage is at least five times that of all the nature reserves and national parks in the UK put together and so provide a vital resource for wildlife. Gardens can be a real haven for wildlife providing resting, feeding and breeding sites for all sorts of different animals. The featured species in the month of February is the Green Woodpecker. These red headed, colourful green birds can be found all year round and can be recognised by their loud laughing or ‘’yaffle’’ call, their undulating flight and their tendency to feed on the ground. They mainly eat ants so you can often see them digging their beak in

to the ground to get at ant colonies. They nest in holes that they excavate in trees in broadleaved woodlands, orchards, large parks and gardens. 30 Miles for JT’s 30th Here at the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation we are organising a special fundraising event in memory of Lt John Thornton who was tragically killed in Afghanistan on 30th March 2008. John would have been 30 years old on 12th April. 30 Miles for JT’s 30th is a tribute to John and a chance for our supporters to take on a challenge, get fit and active and raise a bit of money for a great cause. We have received a fantastic response to this already and would really appreciate your support in promoting the event. One of John’s friends has taken 30 Miles for JT’s 30th to another level. Matt Everett will be attempting the Marathon Des Sables, 156 miles in the Sahara Desert over 5 days! As part of his fundraising Matt is going to be asking supporters to ‘Buy a Drink for John’ donating what they would have spent on a pint or a cuppa to his JTYAF sponsorship. Royal Marine John Thornton was sadly killed in Afghanistan in 2008 and would have been 30 years old on April 12th. Here at the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation we thought that it would be a fitting tribute to take on a 30 mile challenge in his memory. The final test on the Royal Marine Commando Course is a 30 miler, across Dartmoor with kit, so 30 miles is quite a significant distance for Royal Marines.
30 Miles for JT’s 30th will not necessarily be a 30 mile march across Dartmoor! The challenge will be whatever you want it to be! You can walk, run, cycle, swim, row or complete the distance in the gym. If you would like to run a few miles, cycle some more and finish with a walk it’s all entirely up to you. Whether you take on the challenge in one go or do ten 3 mile challenges, it’s your choice. Whether you complete 30 miles as an individual or as a team, again it’s up to you. The challenge is to complete 30 miles between March 30th and April 12th, however you choose. You will need to be self-motivated and organise your own routes and distances. Registration is £5 which will include a t-shirt and a fundraising pack. As part of the challenge your commitment is to raise a minimum of £30 for the JTYAF and to send in a ‘selfie’ taken at some time during your 30 miles. This is a great opportunity to get fit, organise a challenge, tailor made by you for you and help local young people. to your legal questions
Every month the solicitors and lawyers at Harold G Walker will be providing answers to your questions about the law. I know I ought to make a Will but I’ve never done one and I am nervous about how I go about it. A lot of people feel like you do but really it is a very simple process and my colleagues and I are here to help you throughout. The first thing to do is to think about what you want in your Will: 1. Decide who you want to be your Executors. These are the people who will carry out your wishes under the Will. Executors can also be beneficiaries. Make sure you agree with those you wish to appoint that they are happy to take on the task. It is often a good idea to appoint people who are younger than you so that they will still be capable of acting as an Executor when the time comes. Also bear in mind that your nearest and dearest may not wish to act as they will be coping with their grief at your passing. 2. If you have children who are under 18. Decide who you would want to be their guardians in the event that they are orphaned. 3. Finally decide who should get your assets. It would be helpful for you to list your assets giving their approximate values. Assets can be given away specifically or generally by leaving all or part of your total assets to one or more person. Also think about who should be a substitute beneficiary for any gift if the first named beneficiary dies before you.
Having sorted out the above you should telephone one of our offices (whichever is most convenient to you) make an appointment with one of our Solicitors who will talk you through your wishes and guide you to making the arrangements you think best. When you make the appointment you will be advised as to the costs involved. Most of the Wills we do are charged on a fixed fee basis of £150 plus VAT for a single basic Will and £200 plus VAT for mirror Wills for married couples, civil partners or cohabitees. Soon after the interview you will be sent a draft Will to approve and asked to make another appointment to see the Solicitor to get it signed. At that appointment the Solicitor will go through the Will with you to make sure that you understand it and are happy with the provisions. The Solicitor will then guide you through signing the Will and the firm will provide the witnesses necessary. You will be given a copy of the Will to keep and the original will be put in our strong room for safekeeping. We can also arrange for the solicitor to come to your home if you can not get to the office. So the procedure is straightforward and as uncomplicated as we can make it. She graduated with a Honours degree in Podiatry from the University of Brighton in 1995 before taking a position as clinical lecturer at Huddersfield University. More recently she was a lecturer in Podiatry at University College London and the University of East London before moving down to the South Coast.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Geocaching. We love it! ‘Geo’ means the earth and ‘caching’ means a hiding place which is an excellent description for this relatively new ‘sport’. It is a great excuse to go outdoors and find hidden treasure. At this time of year one’s first reaction to going out for a walk maybe, “You must be joking!” (of course I may well be accusing others of my own reaction…) Well, Nellie took us to the Purbecks again this month. We drove to the Wareham Forest area to do a geocache named “Sika View” (thanks to LandyRover for placing it!). I guess it is called that due to the spectacular views over the heathland, Wareham town and the Wareham Golf Course. The day was wonderfully bright and sunny and perfect for bracing the cool January air. I have written about geocaches before, but for those who find this a new idea, just simply go on line and type in “geocache” and there are literally hundreds, if not thousands of walks,

Off we go, GPS in hand... all free, with coordinates to guide you, clues to find and the inevitable treasure at the end. The treasure is simply a box of odds and ends and a list of people who have already done the walk, but boy is it fun trying to find each of the clues and then the finale, the hidden treasure! For those with children, or even those who don’t, it gives a walk a purpose and an extra interest. Using the clues that you print out and a GPS (or your mobile phone), you find your path by answering questions as you go. Some walks are much longer than others so it can all be worked out before you set off. We chose this one in the Wareham Forest as we were booked into the Kings Arms in Wareham for a lunchtime meal, to do a restaurant review. As an aside, we highly recommend the 17th Century Pub for a relaxed, excellently prepared meal! So 10am Saturday and off we set in Nellie. We found the little car park, which was almost full when we arrived, but

Where is that treasure? managed to squeeze Nellie (surprisingly after all that chocolate and Christmas pudding), into the last available spot. We met Martin, a friend, with his two boys and off we walked. The first clue was a telephone number on a post, that was then used to reset the GPS... and off we went again! There were three clues in total on this walk. We met cyclists, horse riders, dog walkers and those just walking like ourselves. Excitedly Ryan found the treasure… it was covered in camouflage! The boys had to remember the answer to the previous clues to unlock the box. Don’t children just love a challenge! By doing the geocache you forget, from a boys perspective, that you

are out for a walk at all. It is entertaining, there are clues and best of all a mystery box to find. From my viewpoint these geocaches take you to places you wouldn’t otherwise know about, so it is a win - win situation. As the boys are kept ‘busy’ you, as a serious adult, can just walk and enjoy the scenery. We ended the morning with a game of hide and seek which the children, and I include Stephen and Martin in this… just loved! Running around in the heath and gorse, surrounded by trees, hiding from each other was a great game they could have
Found it! Now what were those clues?? played for hours. I did the counting and made sure ‘the seeker’ didn’t look before the others were well hidden. It is a very important role you know… Of course after all that walking and playing, the morning would not be complete without a comfortable sit in Nellie and a cuppa to freshen us up. Lovely! Celebrating the best of British wildlife photography... The annual highly-acclaimed British Wildlife Photography Awards (BWPA) exhibition opens at Moors Valley Country Park near Ringwood on 21st March. It features the best of thousands of stunning entries celebrating the beauty and diversity of British wildlife. Amongst a host of striking images this year’s category winners include a shag resting, a puffin in the jaws of an otter, a gannet breeding colony, Scottish woodland, and a telephone box being reclaimed by nature. Locally, Hampshire-based Alex Mustard won two of the competition’s 16 categories with his images of blue sharks off the Cornish coast, while Wiltshire-based Nick Upton won the Documentary Series category with his collection of hazel dormice pictures from a survey day in Somerset. Unusually, central London was the location for Lee Acaster’s winning shot, of a Greylag Goose against a dramatic city skyline. Mark Ward, editor-in-chief at the RSPB’s Nature’s Home magazine, and one of the eleven competition judges said, “The winning photograph shows a familiar bird in a familiar setting, but the visual impact is extraordinary. “The stormy, brooding backdrop sets a dramatic scene, while the orange and pink from the bird bring vibrancy to the monochromatic cityscape”. Wildlife photographer, TV presenter and naturalist Chris Packham is a keen supported of BWPA and has also exhibited his images at Moors Valley. “Every year the British Wildlife Photography

The new combined facilities will house a showroom, offices and their manufacturing facilities. The larger unit will enable new equipment and more staff to be brought in. The re-fit of the new premises is well under way and the complete move over is expected to finish in the second week of February. ‘TOTAL WIBIT’ Mainland UK’s first aqua park launches in the New Forest
Just 20 months ago, New Forest Water Park launched their state of the art Rixen cable wakeboard system which has proved to be a huge hit but this May they expect to create an even bigger splash when they launch the mainland UK’s first Wibit Sports Park. Similar to the assault course used on ‘Total Wipeout’, Wibit consists of interlocking sections providing endless on-water activities from the likes of slides, monkey bars, trampolines and even a climbing ice tower. The inflatable, interlocking modules will provide New Forest Water Park with a floating playground of fun, entertainment and fitness to participants aged from 6 to 66. With installation taking place on the 13th April, the German designed and engineered equipment will undergo rigorous safety procedures before opening to the general public on Saturday, 2nd May 2015.
The Park’s MD Mark Jury enthuses “We couldn’t be more delighted about this new addition to the Park. The response has been phenomenal as just after posting the news on Facebook, we reached 10,000 likes.” Wibit has been sold to over 60 countries and has been enjoyed by over 7,500,000 users worldwide; from Canada to Mexico and from Norway to Dubai and Australia. Wibit’s CEO Romann Rademacher adds “Modularity allows us to create these floating playgrounds for all kinds of locations; from pools up to lakes and open water fronts. Any combination can be made to fit specific location parameters and makes the products universally suitable.”
