Changes at Age Concern Bournemouth – AgeUK Bournemouth?

You may have noticed the new name and logo of “Age UK“ in newspapers and television adverts. Age UK is a new charity which brings together Age Concern and Help the Aged.

It was formed centrally in April 2010 and over the next year or so most local Age Concern’s (although not necessarily all) will be “re-branding” as AgeUK. Age Concern Bournemouth, our own local charity at 700 Wimborne Rd, Winton, has already “rebranded” to Age UK Bournemouth. David Leighton, the Chief Officer, tells us that all the services the charity provides – see later – are continuing, and of course he is keen to expand the offering for older people in the Bournemouth, Poole, and Christchurch areas. Why not call them on 01202 530530, or pop in and see them, or drop them a note to tell them what you would like? Perhaps, offer your services as a volunteer? Age UK Bournemouth currently has about 100 Volunteers providing services in the area, but can always welcome more!

Perhaps you may even wish to make a donation or leave a gift in your will to Age UK Bournemouth?

The Bowen Technique – by Debbie Pettitt I have been a complementary therapist for 23 years now using a variety of healing modalities in my clinic. Working with The Bowen Technique is a fantastic experience because of the results I see. I have had many recommendations from clients who have felt the benefits of Bowen. The technique is very gentle making it ideal for all ages. It involves a series of soft rolling moves made over the muscles, tendons and fascia (connective sheath) of the body, to correct imbalances in the posture, release tension and reduce pain. Lights… Camera… Action! - Take 4 Arts & Entertainment News Art4All News After three years in the planning, the new Ferndown Memorial was officially unveiled on the 30th March in a ceremony attended by over 100 Ferndown residents, town councillors and local schoolchildren. It has been a remarkable community project. The circular stone memorial is based on a theme reflecting the Eternal Flame beneath the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and the Jubilee Sculpture in Winchester. At its cen tre is a sty lized b ron ze rose, surrounded by carved Purbeck stones, white Dorset pebbles and hand cut Mosaic tiles in the shape of a Fernleaf.

The memorial was constructed with help from a number of traditional local craftsmen and much of the work has been carried out by enthusiastic volunteers from the town. One of the keenest helpers was Peter Thornton, father of the young soldier whose sad death in action three years ago in Afghanistan inspired the project. Following John Thornton’s death, residents asked if a Memorial could be created to him in the town. As time went by, the idea grew from the desire to pay tribute to one hero, to additionally embracing all Ferndown residents who had served the community in some way.

Today the memorial bears a dozen names carved with prid e alon gsid e John Thornton’s. They range from that of a local young teenage girl who suffered from Leukemia, to a well known and well loved Ferndown Centenarian. There is

one unifying thread. All these local heroes have inspired the community or worked for the benefit of the town or enhanced the lives of the people living in Ferndown.

Ferndown Drama Group Not only was the January show, Hi-de-Hi! a stonking great success and good fun for the cast to perform, but the Drama Group were delighted to be able to donate £500 pounds from their proceeds to the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation, a charity set up by John’s parents to benefit local schoolchildren. It is a story that takes place on one crazy summer’s day... Seeking peace and tranquillity, Gerald goes to spend a few days in a health farm, presided over by the highly moral Mr Potter. But his hopes are soon dashed by the arrival of his secretary (bearing her hitherto hidden passion for him), his daughter (intending on spending the weekend with her boyfriend) and his wife. Other Entertainment News On the subject of Art for Art’s sake, I took a trip down memory lane last month and watched the 70’s band 10CC perform live on stage at the Lighthouse in Poole.

Formed originally by Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Lol Crème and Kevin Godley, 10CC racked up almost a dozen top ten hits including Art For Art’s Sake, The Things We Do For Love and Life Is A Minestrone, but their classic all time hit was “I’m Not In Love”, a number which they performed with all their original passion and verve despite being close to their sell by date! The Lighthouse Theatre is a favourite venue of mine because it is home to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and offers a superb auditorium for all types of concert and music gigs.

You can see their upcoming programme and make on-line bookings by visiting their website at: www.lighthousepoole.co.uk And speaking of venues, there’s news of a funky, new and versatile venue in Wimborne called the Vibe Lounge which opens its doors at the beginning of April, offering live music, comedy, regular club nights and children’s entertainment.

Following a big launch party on April 1st featuring Camp Bestival favourites The Cuban Brothers, live music continues throughout April with Ska from Double Barrel (April 16th), melodic folk-pop from local rock n’ roll poets Bird Jaguar (April 23rd) and the super-talented Devon singer-songwriter Richard James on April 30th.

Vibe Lounge will also be offering monthly comedy nights beginning on April 9th, as well as regular Saturday morning kids activities/workshops from 10.30am – midday, beginning with Cane and Tissue Hot Air Balloon Making (Age 4-7) on April 16th and Button Jewellery Making (Age 48) on April 30th.
