Wow, what a summer of events we have all had. Hasn’t it been great! We had the European Championships and then the London 2012 Olympics. Not forgetting last, but by no means least, the completely aweinspiring Paralympics! I think the summer has ended with a real celebration. Did you notice, as there was much less bad news expressed during the Olympics that the whole of Britain came alive. Maybe we can learn from that. Locally we have had The New Forest Show, which always seems to be very well attended and has a lot of positive feedback.

If you go down in the woods today… ...why not take a book! A wonderful new children’s book about the wildlife of a well known pond has arrived in the New Forest. Called On The Banks Of Hatchet Pond, it’s a beautifully illustrated tale by Simon Chadwick, creator of the popular New Forest Friends books, and written by first-time author Val Anne Lee. “It’s the story of a daz z lin g dragonfly called Dizzy and a woeful frog with low self-esteem called Podge,” says Simon. “Podge feels he’s just a useless lump, and even when he attempts
to do something spectacular he misjudges the situation badly and just ends up feeling worse. It’s not until something threatening rears its head at Hatchet Pond that he gets the opportunity to find out who he really is inside.” Unlike his other books, Simon hasn’t written this tale and has instead visualised someone else’s words. “V a l is a tremendous poet who has a gift for very witty verse,” he said. “She writes the sort of poetry that is perfect for children’s books, with fabulous rhythm and word play that is a pleasure to read out loud. Perfect for story times.” Just before the summer holidays Simon visited Beaulieu Primary School, itself not too far away from Hatchet Pond, to talk about creating children’s books, and at the end of the day children were given the first opportunity to buy the new story at a book signing.

OUT AND ABOUT in Hampshire by Pat Dimmock On a nice sunny summer day-when it wasn’t raining-a friend and I went to Romsey. The first thing that noticed was that there are a lot of little lanes and pedestrian only areas to walk along, and we were able to just wander and look at the old buildings. This includes a Department store called “Bradbeers” with it’s original sign and pleasantly old fashioned look and feel. As very often happens when I’m out I announced very shortly after arrival “I’m starving” so we went looking for a place to eat. We didn’t want a chain café; something you could find anywhere, but something unique to the area. So we began to search out our perfect lunch place. We found it in the form of “Dish Deli & Kitchen” on Latimer St. When you go in the front door you are enticed with the deli aromas of cheese, coffee and assorted other items, which I find Romsey town square irresistible. You go through to the restaurant from there. I had Salmon and Dill fish cakes with homemade tartar sauce and my friend, who is a vegetarian had a Roasted Veggie sandwich on a malt bloomer. The latte was good too. Something that I notice is sometimes a let down in small places, is the coffee and I have a soft spot for a really good latte. Then we were off to the intriguingly named “King John’s House” which, although very old wasn’t anything to do with King John. It is , however a chance to get inside a mediaeval house. We had a good nose round and saw various exhibits and were given informative talks by two friendly guides. In the area also is “Broadlands” the family home of Lord Louis Mountbatten. We didn’t stop there on this trip but it is well worth the time to do so from the information I’ve seen. All in all it was a very pleasant trip and Romsey is a very nice destination to visit. What to do in your Garden in September Even though it’s been a bit of a hit and miss Summer so far August perked up a bit and fingers crossed, we may have an Indian Summer. (Anyone know where that expression comes from?) The usual garden jobs still apply and here are some of the things you need to get done this month:

• Start planting Spring bulbs like Daffodils (by midSeptember) Fritillaries and Crocuses. • Go apple and blackberry picking. There are lots of things to do with both these crops, both together and separately (blackberry and apple pie, are for me an Autumn must). • Keep birdfeeders and birdbaths full, not only for your all year residents, but for migraters such as Swallows and Housemartins. • You can fill any gaps in your flower boarders with Autumn flowering plants such as Chrysanthemums. • Prune any non-repeat flowering rambling and climbing Roses. • Divide Herbaceous Perennials. If you have too many to plant in other regions of your garden, consider the option of swapping them for other plants with friends, or at a plant swap.
