New Forest Ponies
When you visit The New Forest there are a group of about 5,000 locals that you can’t but help noticing. They have been hanging around for about 2,000 years and what they don’t know about the forest is not worth knowing. We are talking about the wonderful New Forest Ponies of course! All of the ponies found in the forest are wild in the sense they can roam freely but in fact they are owned by New Forest Commoners. The commoners have the right to graze their ponies and cattle on the open forest throughout the year. It is the animals’ grazing which helps to keep the New Forest’s landscape and rare species which you can enjoy today. The ancient tradition of commoning dates back from before the days when William the Conqueror made this area his private hunting reserve and imposed strict laws on the locals. In return for this, the locals were given the rights to graze their animals on the ‘common’ (this being the land which is now known as the New Forest). Think of the New Forest as one large farm! If you have ever wondered why the grass is so neat and tidy here in the New Forest it is thanks to our ponies and cows! In fact, their grazing and browsing supports rare plant species including wild gladiolus and chamomile. This in turn helps the wider ecosystem and encourages other species to thrive here including the Dartford
warbler and the southern damselfly. In fact, the southern damselfly lays its eggs in the water-filled hoofprints of ponies (and cattle) nearby to the streams that pass through the New Forest. Each year, the ponies are rounded up in what are called drifts. Over thirty of these drifts take place during the summer and autumn each year giving the commoners a chance to check the health of their animals and wean and handle the foals.. You will find New Forest ponies dotted all around our National Park. With around 5,000 of them, it won’t be too long until you spot one. There is plenty of nutritious food available for the ponies and you will often find them grazing across the open moorland in small groups. You may see some of our ponies have silver collars on them. When the ponies are rounded up as part of the drift, some of them have these reflective collars put on them to help make them more visible at night time. However, not all of them are caught and some are good at losing them! If you are driving at night and see a reflective collar on a dark road then take it as an indication that there are animals about, some of which you may not be able to see so easily, so please drive with caution. Brockenhurst FC News There has been lots happening at the football club with all our teams competing in league and cup competitions and in total over a hundred local youngsters turning out every week for the Badgers. Look out for their blue tracksuit tops as they make their way to or from matches.
By the time you read this we will have held our annual Fireworks Party at the ground. If you were able to join us I hope you had an enjoyable evening. If you couldn’t make it please make a note for next year - it’s a real fun evening with something for all the family, the fireworks being followed by a children’s fancy dress competition, and then live music in the clubhouse. It is, of course, an important fundraiser for the club as
our enthusiastic band of volunteers work to provide opportunities for youngsters to engage in team sport. During the same half term week we had a visit from Chelsea F.C who put on a football workshop for some of our juniors. What an amazing opportunity for our boys to get some top class coaching, as well as being testimony to the work we do at the club. Please come and support us if you can. The Red Box Project Lymington & Brockenhurst Community News
(Incorporating Lyndhurst & New Milton)
Have you noticed Red Boxes in the local vicinity? These boxes are donation points for The Red Box Project Lymington & Brockenhurst (which now also covers Lyndhurst and New Milton). This community project aims to provide sanitary and essential products for young women in our local schools and colleges. Why is this needed? In the UK some young ladies in our schools and other education settings are finding it difficult to access sanitary products for financial and social reasons. This happens more often than you realise and can result in tearful panics in the toilets, wadded up toilet roll, anxious embarrassment and missed lessons. Some girls are even failing to attend school during their periods and in fact 137,700 girls in the UK missed school last year for this reason! How does it work? The local community sponsor and stock Red Boxes by donating sanitary items at local drop-of points (see locations below). Red Boxes of sanitary items are then put together and placed in local schools and young ladies are able to access the items in the Red Boxes as many as they need to see them through their period - not just one or two. Also, it has been designed to be sustainable, providing a reliable supply month after month after month. Items needed are:
• Sanitary Pads – especially those suitable for teens • Tampons (with or without applicators) • Panty Liners (individually wrapped) • New Black pants age 9-13 and size 6-20 • New Black Tights S/M/L/XL 60 Denier • Intimate Wipes • Small Roll-on Deodorants • Hand Made Drawstring Bags 10x10cm and 20x20cm Why Support this Project? The Red Box Project needs support and donations from the community to help this project get off the ground and remain sustainable for the future. Some of the items listed above can be purchased for £1 or less. So, as coordinators of this project we would ask that when you are next doing your shopping, please pop something from the list into your shopping trolley and please also consider doing this on a regular basis so that the project can be sustained for young ladies in need. This is a very simple, no frills project and is entirely funded by community kindness, woman to young woman. With help from the local community, The Red Box Project Lymington & Brockenhurst hopes to be able to supply a Red Box in every school and further education establishment in the area and keep them topped up. The New Forest Centre has received an important collection relating to the history of the New Forest thanks to the family of a long line of New Forest Verderers, George Briscoe Eyre. The Crosthwaite-Eyre archive contains an extensive collection of deeds and estate records, including hugely significant correspondence of George Briscoe Eyre, a key figure in the struggle to save the New Forest from enclosure. Briscoe Eyre fought for the 1877 Act or ‘Commoners’ Charter’, which protected Commoners’ rights and reconstituted the court of Verderers. Briscoe Eyre topped the poll in the first ever Verderers election, whilst his daughter Dorothy became the first female member of the Court. Other material in the archive includes the cash books of George Eyre who purchased Warrens estate in 1789 and had a new house built there in 1800-1802. The books detail various aspects of his life including travelling, dress and housekeeping. There are also papers and photographs relating to cattle breeding and archives from Eyre and Spottiswood, Her Majesty’s printers, which was the family business for over 200 years. ‘Comprising over 50 boxes of material, this will be a large job in terms of conservation, cataloguing and ultimately digitising where possible to make it publicly available,’ said Ecademy Project Officer Dr Katharine Walker, who is based in the Christopher Tower Reference Library at the New Forest Centre and will be cataloguing the archive with help
from volunteers. ‘We are seeking grants to help with this process and are grateful for the initial contribution by the Crosthwaite Eyre family.’ Oliver Crosthwaite-Eyre, who served as Official Verderer for nine years and is Chairman of the New Forest National Park Authority said: “I’m so pleased that this archive is now in safe keeping at the Christopher Tower Reference Library at the New Forest Centre and is being expertly cared for. This means that the collection will be accessible to the public in perpetuity, as a valuable historical resource, rather than being locked away at home.”

Wills, Estate Planning and Lasting Power of Attorneys Do you know when you should update your will and check your Lasting Power of Attorneys are in place? A recent survey has revealed that over half of people have not updated their will or organised their Lasting Power of Attorneys. An online poll indicated that while people had started to recognise the importance of consolidating their final wishes, they were unaware of the need to review them. Whilst writing a will is important, the need to review and update them regularly should not be overlooked, particularly after a significant change in circumstance. The results of the poll suggest that many people are unaware of the need to check their will, not to mention the impact which legislative and familial changes can have on the distribution of their estate. couples out there that made a will together before they married, perhaps when they bought a house together, or had children, and they don’t realise that getting married automatically invalidates any existing will. “As estates fluctuate in value, people need to make sure their will is consistent with their finances. As wealth increases, so does the impact of inheritance tax, which means careful planning is needed to take advantage of available exemptions and allowances. “And no one in this modern age should be without Lasting Power of Attorney’s. A properly constructed will ensures your wishes are met when you are no longer with us. Naturally good... This is similar to the classic cauliflower cheese but has the added kick of wholegrain mustard which pairs really well with the mature cheddar cheese. The recipe uses a small amount of corn starch/corn flour to thicken the sauce rather than using a traditional roux, this reduces the carbohydrate levels while still making a smooth creamy sauce.
MUSTARD & CHEDDAR BROCCOLI BAKE Ingredients for 4 servings: 1 large head of broccoli 4oz (120ml) heavy cream (double cream) 3 oz (85 g) mature cheddar cheese (extra sharp cheddar cheese) 3 tbsp parmesan cheese (shredded) 1 tsp wholegrain mustard 1 tsp corn starch (corn flour) dissolved in 1 tbsp water Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Method: Preheat the oven to 200°c
First prepare the broccoli by cutting it into even sized
florets. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and add the broccoli. Cook for approximately 3 minutes to slightly soften the broccoli, but not cook it through. Drain and rinse under cold running water to cool. Set to one side while you make the cheese sauce. To make the sauce, place the cream and mustard into a saucepan on a medium low heat, heat the mixture and once it comes to a simmer add the cheddar cheese and stir through until melted. While stirring add the corn starch mixture and continue to cook for a further minute or so until the sauce thickens, add salt and pepper to taste. Make sure that the broccoli is well drained - pat the broccoli dry with paper towels to remove any excess water. Place the broccoli into a baking dish and spoon over the cheese sauce; make sure the broccoli is well covered. Sprinkle over the parmesan cheese and a pinch of paprika if you wish. Place into the oven and bake for approximately 20 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.

Spring Flowering Bulbs
Many bulbs, such as crocus, daffodils and snowdrops will increase naturally in most sites and with different flowering times there will be a succession of interest. If planted in your flower beds, the dying foliage will be hidden by growing herbaceous plants and shrubs. Bulbs are best planted in groups of similar colour and a wonderful show will be created if they are combined with flowers of contrasting colour that bloom at the same time. Try tulips planted with forget-me-nots or wallflowers.
Under trees with no leaves, bulbs will get any available sunlight so will grow happily and give a welcome splash of colour when nothing else has yet woken up. Bulbs can be planted in grass - perhaps in the lawn or a grassy bank - as long as the foliage has time to die down before the first mowing. Grass protects bulbs from mice and squirrels. Try Anemone blanda, chionodoxa, crocus, fritillaria, daffodils (narcissus). Some bulbs are best lifted each year such as tulips and to make this easier you could try planting them in large pots and sinking them in the ground. After the leaves have died down, lift the bulbs and let them dry out. Store somewhere cool and dry and replant in October/November for a spring display. If buying new bulbs, plant as soon as possible and before they start growing. For instance, most daffodils will start producing roots by late summer and other bulbs by midautumn. One exception is snowdrops. These are best bought 'in the green' which means the leaves are already growing and they are then planted and left to spread. Bulbs should always be planted with, at the very least, 2-3 times their own depth of soil above them or even more if the soil is very light. If bulbs become overcrowded, lift them in the dormant season after the foliage has died down. Clean off the soil, leave them to dry then store in paper (not plastic) bags to await replanting.

Wines: Choice Desserts Dessert wines have been very popular through the ages and are generally a sweet wine that is enjoyed with, or after a meal. Sometimes served with the dessert of a meal, and afterwards, also, these productions continue to be chosen regularly and form part of the highlight of a dining occasion. Various well-known dessert wines, that are ‘late harvested’, incorporate ‘noble rot’ (Botrytis cinerea). Differing variations of dessert wines can be light in texture and others more powerful. The dessert wines can be sparkling and fortified, also. Castelnau de Suduiraut (France) is a serious production. Fresh and with good balance, this is a very popular dessert wine. Intense fruits, for the mouthfeel, make this exceptional production very popular, for many dining occasions. Late Harvest Vistamar Moscatel (Chile) is a splendid wine from the Limarí Valley, which has perfect conditions for Moscatel grapes. This straw-yellow production has an excellent bouquet, plus a wonderful mouthfeel and palate of juicy fruits. A long finish adds to the pleasures of this very balanced wine. Royal Tokaji (Hungary) is extremely popular. Tokaji dessert wines have been a favourite from the 17th
century, the indigenous grape varieties, combined with the hot summers and, of course, volcanic soils, plus expertise, come together to produce exceptional wines.
Torres Floralis (Spain) is a further popular dessert wine. The Torres family has, since 1946, been making FloralisMoscatel Oro. This is reputedly one of the most charismatic dessert wines of the Mediterranean. The floral bouquet leads perfectly to the mouthfeel and sensual palate sensations. New Forest Art Society News The New Forest Art Society has once again enjoyed hosting their annual summer exhibition at Lyndhurst Community Centre. The exhibition subcommittee, under the leadership of Alli Goddard, Vice Chair of the Society, did a sterling job in organising the exhibition and along with other members, managed the hanging of nearly 200 framed paintings and the display of unframed work, miniatures, 3D works and many greeting cards. The diversity and quality of the art for sale was frequently commented upon. The society aims to be inclusive and therefore has artists who work across the spectrum of art styles and mediums; all to a very high standard. The private view, on the first Saturday evening, was a very warm affair with many members, family, friends and invited guests having an early opportunity to view and purchase art works. The Society was delighted to welcome Clare Mitchell, Curator of Art at Southampton City Art Gallery, to open the exhibition. Clare’s choice of best in show went to Julie Walker for ‘Old Friends’. The exhibition subcommittee’s choice went to Sandy Poynter for ‘On the Turn’. And the coveted public choice went to Shandy Simmons for ‘Sunset on the Ganges’.
