Roydon Woods in the Autumn by Kizzie Henderson
It’s Autumn – the trees are turning red, now is a great time to get outside and enjoy this autumnal array of colour. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trusts Roydon Woods Nature Reserve is stunning ancient woodland and the perfect place to celebrate autumn with its wide range of wildlife to spot. Located South East of Brockenhurst, Roydon Woods is the Trust’s largest reserve. It was donated to the Trust in 1977 by Peter Barker Hill who owned felt the Trust would be a good custodian. Covering almost 1000 acres, the Reserve sits in the New Forest which is one of Europe’s most important areas for wildlife. At this time of year Roydon Woods bursts with colour with its fiery beech trees to the dark green of the evergreen yew. The reserve encompasses more than just woodland, there are also meadows, heaths and bogs and the Lymington river winds through its heart. The wide variety of habitats support a huge range of wildlife; among which are an impressive selection of birds. As the autumn progresses red wings and fieldfares, winter visiting members of the thrush family, can be seen feeding on the hawthorn berries and flocks of great, blue and longtailed tits can been seen and heard moving through the canopy. There is also an abundance of deer on the reserve. Watch out for Roe, Fallow or Sika Deer; hear the scream of Sika stags, or their rutting (mating) calls which sound like whistles or burping. Young badgers are also being pushed out of their sets and there are chances to see them wandering along the paths. The ponds support many different types of the last of which, the red common darter and blue and black migrant hawker may still be seen in the autumn months The Woods are host to a huge variety of fungi. Up to 900 different types remain in abundance. One of the reasons for this is because foraging for fungi is prohibited on the reserve. Most of the woodlands in Britain have been worked for hundreds of years. As a result of this long history of management much of the wildlife that lives within the woods have evolved to take advantage of the rides and clearings that management creates. Uncontrolled deer numbers can pose a serious problem to native woodlands and deer numbers are controlled at Roydon to maintain the health of the deer herd and to prevent damage from excessive browsing. John Durnell, Head of Estates discussed the future of Roydon Woods: our primary aim is to ensure Roydon continues to support a wealth of wildlife. With grants drying up we are making greater use of timber produced by our management to sell on a commercial basis. We also sell
venison and run a wood fair and local produce show in June each year. Ultimately though it’s all about the wildlife. Roydon woods are working woods and the plants that grow in woodlands are particularly vulnerable to trampling which means we do ask visitors to stick to the paths. The reserve is much quieter than much of the rest of the New Forest so when visiting the reserve please keep the following guidance in mind: t Please keep dogs close to you on a lead. Always pick up after your dog t Foraging for fungi is strictly forbidden. t Please take care around livestock. If you’re lucky enough to spot deer please observe them from a distance. t Many birds nest and feed on the ground. Please take special care not to disturb them. Ann – Which book do you keep returning too?
Ann – You’re busier than ever, but looking forward to the new SCD?
Anton – “Fred Astaire’s autobiography ‘Steps In Time’. He’s a hero of mine, which you may have guessed, and like me, not great looking, but boy he could dance, so who needs looks with that kind of talent.”
Anton – “As ever it’s a great show, super team and this year a big change...” Ann – Ah yes, no Bruce? Anton – “Really going to miss him, we all are, but, you know it has evolved, and I think the girls will do a great job to be honest.” Ann – How did you land the famous job on the show? Anton – “Basic audition really, got called back, and it just went from there, no one knew just how big it would become though. “ Ann – Who inspired you to dance at first then? Anton – “The Band Wagon with Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse from 1953. Watching them dance inspired me, Brilliant film, and it just had everything really, and what is more it’s not dated at all.“ Ann – How would you like to be most remembered? Anton – “I’m a Catholic, so at my end party, it would be in a church, and everyone would come in to ‘If My Friends Could See Me Now’, by Sammy Davis Jr. I’d like a tomb with a dressing room door, and a sign saying, ‘Do Not Disturb‘ .” (laughing)
Ann – You had your own cooking show ‘Step up to the Plate‘ any more shows like Bake Off maybe? Anton – “I loved doing that show, and it was a huge success, but as yet my cooking skills are best left as a presenter, and I would not rule out ‘Bake Off ’ as it’s such a great format, but can I bake?” Ann – Your golden rules for dancing? Anton – “Well I don’t drink, I eat lightly, and above all else blooming enjoy it, or else what is the point?“ Ann – Many people thought you should have replaced Sir Bruce... thoughts? Anton – “Oh that is so nice, and yes I would have loved the job, but who knows what the future holds, I mean I think the girls will do a terrific job. And for me I just can’t wait to see the new series take off once again.“
Ann – You danced with super model Jerry Hall. Good fun? Anton – “She was great fun, and super fit too, with a wonderful grace that models have... its odd you see, because you honestly never know who you are going to get, and that is half the fun really.“

If you are living with an illness, care for someone who has an illness or are bereaved and would like support, information or to meet people in similar situations, then The Coates Centre may well be able to help. This brand new service and facility aims to offer information and support in a variety of ways to anyone in the local community whose lives have been affected by illness. Examples include a drop in centre where trained volunteers can offer a listening ear and signpost you to other services of interest, all while having a coffee. A programme of activities will also be available ranging from laughter yoga, complementary therapies, and informational talks to cooking classes. These can be easily accessed and aim to provide both information and support. Services are free of charge; all that is asked for is a donation.

Keeper Gareth stars on TV!
New Forest Wildlife Park keeper Gareth Morrissy is in danger of becoming a celebrity heart throb after appearing in a BBC 1 TV programme this week.

Gareth was seen advising a couple from Weston-Super-Mare about animal care and wildlife conservation in the BBC 1 daytime series, Home Away from Home, on Friday 17th October.
“I’m not sure what my wife would say about me being a celebrity though, or a heart throb. She might have a different opinion.”
The programme features couples from different parts of the country who take part in holiday home swaps and explore areas and activities that are new to them. In the episode, the home swap couple visit New Forest Wildlife Park and are shown talking to Gareth, feeding the deer and otters and learning about New Forest Wildlife Park’s conservation work. “The filming took a while but was enjoyable,” said Gareth. “It is nerve wracking at first but I’m getting used to being in the limelight – it’s part of

Don’t Fear the Solicitor! It is a fact that more than two thirds of the adult population of the UK do not have a Will. I have been a Solicitor for more than 20 years now and that statistic has remained pretty much the same throughout that time. When I meet with people who haven’t made a Will before, I ask them the reason why they have put off visiting a Solicitor to deal with something that is so important.

Some of the answers I receive are expected, such as worries about the costs involved and perhaps difficulties in getting to the office. There have, however, been a couple of reasons that have surprised me since they are based on fear. Firstly, I have been told by a number of people that they put off making an appointment because they felt that by discussing the issue of their Wills they were, in some way, hastening their own death. The second was purely the thought of meeting with a Solicitor. A surprising number of people have told me that they dreaded the thought of visiting the office as they believed the whole experience was going to be intimidating and they thought that they would be made to feel uncomfortable. The first of these fears I can do nothing about, but the second should not be a reason for putting off dealing with something that is so very important. I know that Solicitors often get a bad press but I would like to think that most Solicitors are very approachable

and are able to discuss issues without resorting to a whole lot of legal jargon. The costs of making a Will are usually extremely reasonable when compared with other services. Where people have difficulties getting into the office because of illness or infirmity, it is usually possible for a Solicitor to meet with them at their home. And as for the fear of meeting with a Solicitor – well, I’m not entirely sure that it’s possible to be intimidated by someone who can quite often be found up to her neck in mud or water, so please
don’t let that be the reason for not making a Will! (Apologies to the Blue Oyster Cult for the misuse of their song title.) Probus Club NEW FOREST
We get together on every third Thursday in the month at Boldre War Memorial Hall, Pilley Street, Pilley between 2pm - 4.30pm. Support and information is available to people with Parkinson’s, their carers, family & friends. All are very welcome.
