Wow it is November 2011. Dare I say it but Christmas is just around the corner… again. It really is time to put attention on the house, why not install a new woodburner, get solar panels fitted, have a bedroom makeover, tidy the garden, repair the boiler, treat yourself to a new TV, get a new fitted kitchen or just go all out and plan that new conservatory you have been so longing for.

Name the Rose Competition Results A once in a lifetime opportunity to name a brand new rose was one of the highlights at this year’s New Forest & Hampshire County show. Over 2000 visitors took part in the competition organised by Pococks Roses of Romsey.

“We had some fabulous names to choose from and it was very difficult to select the winner. After much deliberation we chose ‘The Enchantress’ as the blooms are a classic English rose shape and an enchanting pastel pink colour”, commented Stuart Pocock.

Shortlisted names also included Summer Dew, Heaven Scent and Hearts Desire. Among the more amusing entries were Harper 7, Nosey Rosey and Willy the Pink. The winning entry was sent in by

Mrs Ann Quick from Winchester who will receive several “Enchantress” rose trees for her garden. The Enchantress rose will be officially unveiled at next year’s New Forest & Hampshire County Show and will be on display in the flower tent.

The New Forest & Hampshire County Show takes place at the Showground, New Park, Brockenhurst, Hampshire on 24th, 25th and 26th July 2012.

LATE FILING PENALTIES Your 2010-11 Self Assessment return must be filed electronically and payment received before midnight on 31st January 2012, after which a stringent new penalty regime will apply even if no tax is due.

The penalty is £100 if the return is late; a further £10 per day up to £900 after 90 days; after 6 months the penalty is another £300 or 5% of tax due if higher; and after 12 months there is an additional £300 or 5-100% of the tax due.

Failure to pay any tax due carries a further 5% penalty after 30 days; another 5% after 6 months and a third 5% after 12 months.

Halloween 2011

Witches, vampires, devils, ghouls and even the Grim Reaper himself were out in force this Halloween.

We got together with some friends and everyone made a real effort to get into the “spirit” of things!

The kids had great fun getting their faces painted — not to mention some of the adults too! With some music specially selected to befit the occasion and also a quiz to get the “brains” in motion as well, everyone had a real “hoot”!

One of the best bits was “Guess who or what you are?”, where each person had a name of a person or object attached to their back and then by way of asking questions that could only be answered by “yes” or “no” work out who or what they were. Great fun!

November’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Fruit In favourable conditions fruit trees can be Trees and Shrubs Always give your plants good thoughts!

November is the best time to plant deciduous trees and shrubs, however be careful with the roots when moving and try not to disturb too much soil.

Climbers and Wall-Plants Many hardy ones such as clematis, jasmine, honeysuckle, Virginia creeper and many other decorative vines may also be planted now. Good planting & supporting methods should be used.

Roses The pruning of most garden roses in the usual bush and standard forms can be carried out now. This is to support the rose over the winter to save from damage.

Borders and Beds The end of the flowering season for herbaceous perennials is a good time to have an end of season clean up.

Bulbs and Corms Tulips and hyacinths if not planted last month can still be done while the ground is still workable, if wet add sharp sand for drainage.

Rock Gardens and Pools Fallen leaves should be prevented from falling into pools and ponds. Also remove them from the rock gardens. Fork and sprinkle sharp sand over surface to prevent fungal attack.

Lawns If planning to produce new lawns from seed, digging should be completed now to allow winter frosts to condition the soil for next spring.

New Forest Organ Society Our concerts are monthly (usually 4th Tuesday in the month) and we have professional musicians who come from all over England to give concerts who all bring their own modern electronic organs and play a variety of music, big band, Latin, light classical etc. The Society has been giving concerts for 33 years and our audience is 180-200 each month so very popular.
