Woodland Wildlife Weekend Woodland is home to more species than any other land-based habitat in the UK. However as with other wild habitats, much of it only exists in isolated pockets surrounded by urban development or nonwildlife-friendly farmland. Woodland once covered the majority of Britain - but now only 3% of our land is home to precious ancient woodland. These fragments are under threat, but also aren’t big enough to sustain our local wildlife. That’s why we at the Wildlife Trust are campaigning for joined-up spaces for wildlife across the country, or what we call ‘Living Landscapes’. For example allowing room for wildflowers alongside our crops, or leaving green corridors through our towns and cities would be a massive help for wildlife looking for food and a home. Combined with wild spaces like nature reserves, they could provide a range of different habitats for all kinds of flora and fauna. Most importantly they would link up habitats, rather than leaving them fragmented as they are now. Things have improved slightly for woodland in recent decades. Campaigners and conservation groups like the Wildlife Trust successfully pushed for the protection and restoration of woodland areas over the years. The Trusts got involved, and now look after more than 400 woodlands across the UK - from flower-strewn ancient woodlands to wild coastal woods, damp and rich in lichen and moss. Woodland needs ongoing protection from invasive species that aren’t native to the UK and damage from human activity. It’s especially important to proactively improve woodland by providing a diversity of habitats so that many different plants and animals can

flourish. This might mean clearing away some more common trees to allow sunlight to reach rarer shrubs and flowers below. Now is a perfect time to celebrate and explore local woodlands, and all the diversity they offer both above our heads and below our feet. Why not take time out to reflect on nature’s beauty and appreciate what our natural environment has to offer? Bluebells have burst into colour, and other beautiful wildflowers such as wood anemones, ramsons and celandine, have also emerged. There are also many less obvious plants and creatures: smaller, shyer, nocturnal perhaps, or even underground. As well as celebrating woodland’s showy species, how about looking for the quiet ones, the little grey ones, the ones that hide under rocks? There’s plenty to see and do – visit www.hiwwt. org.uk for tips in your local area. 5 ways to explore your local woodland: 1. Go on a wildflower walk in your local wood. 2. Look out for signs of our more secretive woodland wildlife, like spring fungi, badgers and woodlice. 3. Amuse the kids with some free spotter sheets available from our Wildlife Watch website: www.wildlifewatch.org.uk/spotting-sheets 4. Go butterfly spotting. Beautiful brimstone, comma, small tortoiseshell, peacock, red admirals are all emerging in the coming weeks. 5. New Milton Decorative & Fine Arts Society supports learning disability charity Pottery students at the Stable Family Home Trust near Ringwood were delighted to receive a donation of £500 from New Milton Decorative & Fine Arts Society towards new equipment for their thriving pottery. The cheque includes a further donation from a member of the Society to enable the Trust to acquire a dedicated printer and the special Decal paper to allow the students to transfer their drawings on to their ceramic work. The pots they produce are sold through the charity’s own shop, Gifted, in Highcliffe and raise money for the varied activities available to daily and residential service users, such as woodwork, cookery, IT and money skills, as well as dance and drama ‘We aim to engage the public in our work’ said Marion Davies, Head of Fundraising. ‘Our retail outlet, Gifted,

is not the usual charity shop – we have pottery demonstrations by the students helping to run the shop, and we encourage them to take control of their own lives and develop social skills as well as personal aspirations’. The beautiful gardens at The Stables provide an appropriate backdrop for much of the ceramic work by the students, including illuminated garden sculptures by Richard Tatem, who received the cheque on behalf of the charity, which was presented by Philip Benstead, Chairman of New Milton Decorative & Fine Arts Society. The Society’s Young Arts Project promotes the work of organisations providing help and support to develop skills and interests of students in all branches of the arts. The Stable Family Home Trust is the 2015 recipient of this special award.

Flyers Remembered A talented group of men and women from across the New Forest have joined forces to tell one of Hampshire’s most remarkable stories from the First World War.

When the Royal Flying Corps established an airfield in East Boldre in 1915 it dramatically transformed the face of the tiny village and changed the lives of its inhabitants. The development of the airfield, the arrival of aircraft and the training and tragedies of the military flying school are played out in a twohour production entitled “From Forest Field to Western Front”. A twenty-strong cast includes members of Lymington and Pilley players, residents of East Boldre and Cadets from the Lymington and Hythe Air Cadet Force. The younger members of the cast will portray the pioneering pilots, 8,000 of whom died in training, never to see service on the Western Front. Around 30 of those brave aviators were killed in training accidents at East Boldre and 19 of them were laid to rest in the village churchyard. Motoring and aviation pioneer Lord John Montagu, father of the present Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, is to be played by Malcolm Ross and airfield surveyor and talented pianist William Steel will be portrayed by Pilley Players’ popular pianist George Mills. RFC officers, ground crew, engineers and East Boldre residents are played by other members of the cast.

The production, a montage of dramatic cameos, audio/visual illustration, poetry and music, is written and produced by former BBC Five Live producer broadcaster and is being staged on Tuesday 19th, Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st May. Curtain up is at 7.30pm and tickets (price £5) are available from East Boldre Post Office or Sue Adams on 01590 612887. “From Forest Field to Western Front” forms the perfect prelude to the Spring Bank Holiday programme of events to commemorate the arrival of the Royal Flying Corps at East Boldre. This includes a talk by New Forest MP Dr Julian Lewis on the politics of the First World War, a previously unseen exhibition of photographs of the wartime airfield, a flying display by replica World War I aircraft and a Commemorative Service in the Parish Church. LEWIS Car Insurance Car insurance prices have fallen 40% over the past two years, according to the AA. But with a rise in fraudulent claims, its latest index predicts an increase of up to 8% in 2015; others think 10% is possible. So to help you drive down costs, let me answer your most common questions… Q. Is this only something you can do if you’re at renewal? A. No, everyone should be checking their price right now, even if you only signed up to a new deal a few months ago. Unless you’ve claimed, you can usually cancel a policy for a fee of around £50 and get a refund for the rest of the year (though you won’t earn no claims for that year). It’s worth checking if it’s worth it. Q. My renewal’s only six weeks away, should I just wait? A. It’s likely if you did try and cancel and get a new policy now, the cancellation fee will diminish any savings – so that’s a bit futile. Yet there is another trick – www.aviva.co.uk, www.postoffice.co.uk and www.lv.com quotes last 60 days, so why not grab them now and you’re effectively locking in those prices in case they rise in the meantime. Q. Are the savings that great? Can’t you just auto-renew? A. Never just auto-renew without checking elsewhere, often it just lets insurers smack a price rise on you, as it knows apathy means many will keep paying more and more. I’m not saying auto-renewing will never be your cheapest option, just that it should never be done without checking and comparing elsewhere first. Q. So it’s just a question of getting on a comparison site? A. That’s the route many use, but there are steps to really kick it up. It’s important to understand that there’s no one cheapest provider, so it’s a case of following a system. Never just do one comparison, you need a benchmark of a few comparisons to find out where’s cheapest. There’s a system to follow fully explained at www.mse.me/ carinsurance. In a nutshell… Combine comparison sites. They don’t all cover the same insurers, so combining a number of sites is the best way to really make a meaningful saving. My current top picks for a typical driver are www.moneysupermarket.com, www.confused.com, and www.comparethemarket.com Check insurers that comparisons miss. Comparison sites let you compare 100s of insurers quickly but they don’t capture the entire market. The biggies, including Aviva, www.directline.com and www.zurich.co.uk only offer their products directly.

with one car at once so don’t include multi-car discounts. Therefore you should always manually check those that offer it. The big one is www.admiral.com multi-car, but www.churchill.com, www.directline.com and www.privilege.com also offer it. I’m not saying they’ll win, but that you should check. Difficult to insure? Use a broker. If you’ve difficult circumstances (eg, past bans or big accidents) that make getting insurance difficult, a comparison site is less likely to help as these are mainly focused on ‘normal’ policies. You may be better off finding a local broker - see the British Insurance Brokers’ Association website (www.biba.org.uk), as these can sometimes find a cheaper deal for you. Q. So it’s all pretty straightforward? A. Ah if only. Common-sense doesn't always do the job… - Third party's not always cheapest. Merely selecting comprehensive makes some insurers see you as a lower risk. So always check both. - Adding a responsible second driver can cut your costs. This can bring down your risk average and price ― of course, it must be someone who may drive your car. As Mazzyb5 tweeted: "Took your advice and added mum ― saved £500." - Tweaking your job description can cut costs. I'm not saying lap dancers should call themselves cabinet ministers (or vice versa, heaven forbid). But these days many people have such specific job descriptions car insurers don't list them, as Fabsternation tweeted: "Thanks. Changing from creative director to marketing manager saved £300." See my fun car insurance job picker tool www.mse.me/jobpicker. - Beware paying monthly. A monthly payment plan for your insurance is essentially a high-interest loan. For example, if your premium is £1,000 but you’re paying an APR of 25%, your insurance will actually cost £1,140 once you factor in the interest. So either pay in full, or if you can't afford it, use a credit card with a lower APR or better still, a 0% credit card for spending, ensuring your repayments are big enough to clear it within a year. Q. And any special tips for young drivers? A. With the average premium for a 17-22-year-old at an eyewatering £1,194 per year, young car drivers can be priced out ― all the techniques above will help, but if you’re not getting there, check ‘pay how you drive’ (telematics) this involves a device being fitted inside your car that monitors your actions behind the wheel. NEW MILTON DECORATIVE & FINE ARTS SOCIETY Our final lecture for this season is an appropriate choice for the centenary of the first world war, and the bi-centenary of the battle of Waterloo. The title of Sarah Stopford’s talk is War and Peace, Patriotism and Protest. War has always inspired grand, patriotic ‘history’ painting and strong protest art as well as some of the most poignant evocations of peace. These artists’ impressions record courage and crisis as well as the pain and Sarah Stopford uncertainty of those caught in the crossfire.

New Forest Arts Society A good few years ago I remember my mother-in-law going off, with her painting buddies, to paint en plein air and attend meetings of the Art Society held in Lyndhurst. Now it’s my turn, with my family being mildly amused, yet supportive, of my artistic activities! The New Forest Art Society (NFAS) is going into its 51st year. I am sure over that time it has changed but at the core is the aim to further the interests of artists in the New Forest area (and beyond). The Society welcomes visitors and new members. Are you a practising artist or recently returned to painting? Is painting a new found hobby? Perhaps you are interested in art generally but don’t consider yourself an artist. This eclectic mix describes the membership of the NFAS. Our styles range from representational to abstract, and all styles in-between, and members work in a variety of meduims, including the three dimensional. We share an enthusiastic passion to develop our skills and to spend time with like-minded people. Meetings are the third Wednesday of most months at Lyndhurst Community Centre from 7 – 9pm, when artists

working in a variety of styles/mediums, demonstrate their skills, or occasionally we have an art related talk. There are paint-out mornings and workshops. To exhibit and sell your work you need to be a member; our summer exhibition in August is being extended this year to take in two weekends and, new for 2015, we will be having a two day sale in December. There is no better accolade than that someone is prepared to pay for your art! On 17th June Bonnie Brown, professional artist, will be critiquing members works in progress. Bonnie ran a day long workshop with us in April – a wonderful day when we not only appreciated her artist skills but also her teaching skills. July 15th sees professional calligrapher Jan Picket demonstrating her skills and giving us an opportunity to try out in pen and ink. No meeting in August but the summer exhibition (watch out for the posters). Bring this article to your first meeting and the guest fee will be waivered. Courgettes

There are not many vegetables that are as rewarding, and easy to grow, as courgettes. Now is a great time to get them started, they’ll pop up quickly and soon be supplying you with more tasty courgettes than you know what to do with! If you’re planted peas don’t forget that they’ll need some support from sticks or netting that they can climb up. If you’ve lost seedlings or had trouble getting them started with all the cold weather don’t forget that you can always buy plants that have already been started. Buying young plants in is a great way to experiment with different varieties too - with so many types of tomato available it’s more fun to have several plants, each of different kinds, than half a dozen all the same. There’s a good plant stand at the monthly farmers market, and several garden centres or local growers nearby. May is the time to start off that wonderfully easy vegetable - the courgette. If you’ve never grown courgettes before then I can highly recommend it as they give such a high yield from even just a couple of plants. In fact that would be my main advice - don’t be tempted to grow too many or you’ll be inundated! Plant the seeds undercover or on a windowsill from the beginning of the month. Put two seeds to a pot, laying them on their sides and covering with about 1” of compost. They usually germinate in a week to ten days and grow pretty rapidly. Remove the weaker of the seedlings (I always feel guilty when I do this! If it looks good I re-pot it). When the seedlings have four to 6 leaves start to harden off by placing outside during the day. Plant out after all risk of frost has passed. You can also start courgettes outside, directly into the bed in which they’ll grow but I’d wait until later in the month when the soil is a bit warmer.

The plants will grow quickly, producing exotic looking yellow flowers (look out for recipes for the flowers too). For maximum yields the plants should be harvested regularly. Tiny courgettes are very tasty, and don’t be tempted too turn your back on the plants for too long as they grow large at an amazing rate! Be careful with watering when seedlings as the stems can rot, but they’ll need plenty of water once they have grown. If you’re short of space courgettes can be grown in grow bags, planting two to a bag. With summer in mind, don’t forget to keep planting your salad crops. As well as the traditional lettuce there are a host of other salad leaves that can be grown, and it’s usually possible to buy packets of mixed salad seeds. Get in the habit of planting some at least once a fortnight - use some of the leaves to cut and come again for tasty fresh salad, transplanting some lettuces outside and allowing them to grow on to full size. If you planted beetroot seeds out in March or April the chances are that they’ll have suffered with the very cold weather that we had last month. Another row sown now may well give you much better results. Fancy your own, home grown, Brussels sprouts with Christmas dinner? They need quite a long growing time, so think about starting them around now.
