Dear Brockenhurst, Dare I say‌ At the time of this writing the weather has been really good! We had a great weekend away with the Cubs and Scouts camping. Having recently bought a converted van, this was an ideal opportunity. The van is used to transport all the magazines each month, but at the weekend the little fridge and cooker come into their own. I have to say I love it! Waking up in the middle of a field, not literally of course, and seeing the sun rising was really quite liberating! Hayden went climbing, abseiling, jumping up and down on trampolines, making fires and cooking apples, shooting at targets and generally having a whale of a time. I was never a girl guide myself and I have to say I think I missed out! If you have any Girl Guide or Scouting stories and photos, do send them to us and we will print them for you. Nothing like bringing good old memories back! This month inside The Brockenhurst Guide you will find all of our local trades and business people who would love to hear from you. Do use the index to find what you are looking for. There are many events coming up too, with an interesting one about energy costs on May 30th. With rising energy prices this is one to attend! There is also the New Forest Show and other community meetings! The prize wordsearch offers a bottle of champagne to the lucky winner! Don’t forget if you have a club or society in Brockenhurst, we would love to promote you. This is free. If you have a business in the area, please give me a call and we can help you get more business. Have a great month of May!

New train station nameplates now welcome passengers to the New Forest National Park New nameplates have been put up at rail stations to greet train passengers arriving at New Forest National Park gateway stations. The signs have been installed at five stations by the New Forest National Park Authority to welcome visitors and residents, and to promote the area’s National Park status. The ‘Gateway to the New Forest National Park’ signs can be seen at Brockenhurst, Beaulieu Road, Ashurst, New Milton and Sway rail stations. The New Forest Tour is also promoted on many of the nameplates. The award winning open top bus experience connects with rail stations, making it easy for people to travel to and around the National Park without their car. The nameplates have been funded by the Local Sustainable Transport Fund, a £3.8m grant awarded to Hampshire County Council, the New Forest National Park and South Downs National Park to develop sustainable transport and reduce the impact of traffic in the two National Parks. Nat Taplin, sustainable transport officer at the National Park Authority, said: ‘These new nameplates will remind visitors that they have arrived in a special place. The nameplates highlight onward travel options such as the New Forest Tour and provide an important link in our overall vision to provide an integrated green transport network.’

Forest Tour route, to be launched on 29 June. Passengers can hop on and off where they like, and bring their bikes. All Tours are equipped with a fascinating audio commentary which provide an insight into the rich history of the New Forest, and point out things to see and do along the routes. Recent figures showed the existing red and green routes of the Tour saved an estimated 147,000 private car miles, and contributed an estimated £500,000 boost to the local economy each year. All routes run every hour daily from 29 June to 15 September. For more information visit www.thenewforesttour.info facebook.com/newforesttour twitter.com @newforesttour

Lasting Power of Attorney... ...what you need to know

We are regularly being told by the media that our population is aging, coupled to this is the rise in conditions such as dementia.

An LPA is available in two parts, Property and Financial Affairs and Health and Welfare. You can choose to do just one or both parts.

Having a family member or friend diagnosed with dementia can be difficult. There are lots of things to consider and often high on the list is how to manage a person’s finances when they are no longer able to do so. One way to do this is to create a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA).

You need to decide who you want to appoint as attorney/s and, if you wish, replacement attorney/s. You can decide to place restrictions on your attorney/s or provide them with guidance, but be careful, once a restriction has been made it cannot be removed without making a completely new LPA. Before an LPA can be used it needs to be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian . We recommend registering the LPA straight away so it is ready to be used when required as the registration process takes approximately 3 months. Remember, LPAs are not just for the elderly. Many of our clients see an LPA as an insurance policy: it is there if it should ever be required.

So what’s involved? Firstly, don’t delay. To make an LPA you need to have mental capacity. If a person does not have the sufficient mental capacity the only way to handle someone’s finances is to make an application to the Court. This procedure is costly, time consuming and can result in a complete stranger being appointed to look after your finances.

82 Station Road New Milton

There is a wealth of information relating to LPAs available to the public and at Heppenstalls we have a number of experts specialising in all types of Power of Attorney who would be happy to discuss your requirements. Please call us to arrange an appointment to discuss your needs in more detail.

New Forest Show Announce Ticket Price Reduction The New Forest and Hampshire County Show are pleased to announce that ticket prices for 2013 are to be held at the 2012 rate for adults and senior citizens. Both children and families will now be able to enjoy cheaper prices with a child ticket falling by 40% from £8.50 to £5 and a family ticket from £46.50 to £43.00. Children under 5 will still be free and it is hoped that these revised prices will allow more people to come to the Show and get involved with the community’s largest event. On top of this, anyone visiting the Show’s website will be able to enjoy an additional 15% off tickets bought online until 11th July 2013. The Show is taking place on 30th, 31st July & 1st August 2013 at New Park, Brockenhurst and highlights on offer include the Devil’s Horsemen, who will be performing their acrobatics on horseback and also their ‘Roman Chariot Racing’ display which is probably the fastest and most thrilling display of horsemanship you will ever see.

Other attractions include One Man and His Dog, displaying the very best sheep dog techniques, the Pony Club Mounted Games and the stunning Heavy Horse Musical Drive, all of which are on every day of the Show. For the younger visitors, the Forest Fun Factory provides all day activities, shows and games for children of all ages including a circus workshop, entertainers and a gameshow parade. Longdown Activity Farm has an interactive Show Farm for children to get up close and personal with small farmyard animals.
