Hello Brockenhurst, Well we needed some rain but I think we got more than we bargained for! I’d like a little sunshine again now. I think you will agree. There’s lots of local information this month and small articles for you to read, including news from Stag’s Head Antiques, a message from Oscar Pet Foods, a notice about The New Forest Show, Beaulieu Primary School have a little say, explore Moors Valley for free and the Brockenhurst Music Society present their calendar of events. All good news! I am looking for local people’s celebrations so that we can wish you Happy Birthday, Happy Anniversary or drool over the photo of your new baby. It will be a new feature in our next issue and could be a great way to wish someone a Happy Day! A Galaxy of Driving Skills to be enjoyed at the New Forest Show The New Forest & Hampshire County Show is well known as an established and one of the best known venues for carriage driving, providing some of the best coaching and driving classes to be seen in the UK, and giving everyone the chance to view virtually everything for the horse and driver at one Show over the three days. They are such a spectacle to watch and parade a history of equine transport before your eyes. A total of fifteen driving classes cover a huge range of carriages, breed of horses, styles and speed. On Tuesday the Show is particularly honoured to have so many rare trade carriage entries. These were the everyday workhorses of the last century and sadly many can no longer be seen. There is such a vast range to see – the butchers carts, that had to travel really fast because meat could not be refrigerated in those days; the Coster carts that transported the fruit and vegetables, flamboyant and colourful; the old milk floats of Benny Hill fame, where the horse was slow and steady (even though he was the fastest milkman in the west!) and knew the route as well as his master. A visual feast for everyone. ‘Majesty and Might’ can best describe the Heavy Horses, not only to be seen in the driving classes but also in the exciting Musical Drive where the intricacies of the interweaving of this horse power makes one g a s p w it h aw e a n d admiration combined with ‘heart in ones mouth’ emotions. This year it is expected that there will be the largest turnout for this in the history of this Drive, with 16 carriages taking

part. The New Forest & Hampshire County Show founded this magnificent spectacle which is now replicated all over the UK. They perform every day in the main East Ring. The private driving classes, taking place on Wednesday, is perhaps the Ferrari of carriage driving - flamboyant, effervescent and full of fun. The original drivers could be likened to the teenagers of that world! Thursday is a really busy day for the driving classes starting with the Hackney classes, followed by Coaching and Multiple classes with a marathon drive through the picturesque surrounding New Forest internal roads, returning to the show for the final of the horn blowing competition with the championship. This has named only a few, so don’t miss out on all the other classes not mentioned here, such as the little ponies and traps and the fast and furious scurry driving and much more. Every age group is fascinated with this important section of the Show. The Master Builders Hotel hosted a ‘biscuit making’ afternoon for four children from the Beaulieu Primary School. One child was chosen from each class for a variety of reasons and they had a wonderful time with Head Chef Adam Duebel, and went away the proud owners of the decorated biscuits they made that day.

The Master Builders Hotel support Beaulieu Primary School in a number of ways. Every time a child eats at the Hotel, 50p is donated to the School. Other activities include – decorating the Christmas trees in the Hotel, helping with a Family Food & Drink Festival to raise money for the school on the weekend of June 30th — July 1st this year, and offering to host any other activities during the school year.

Explore Moors Valley – for free! New Forest Organ Society Our concerts are monthly (usually 4th Tuesday in the month) and we have professional musicians who come from all over England to give concerts who all bring their own modern electronic organs and play a variety of music, big band, Latin, light classical etc. The Society has been giving concerts for 33 years and our audience is 180-200 each month so very popular. Visitors are very welcome at £3.50 per concert but please phone either of the 2 contacts listed below to reserve tickets. Highwood Bridge Club We are a small, friendly bridge club with about fifty members. We meet every week for a variety of cut in rubber, Chicago and partner afternoons.
