We do hope you enjoy reading and using our well loved, local publication. This month I drove Nellie for the first time. What an experience that was! You can read all about it on pages 22 and 23. We have managed to book a holiday in April on the Greek island of Santorini! Some may remember that I fell in love with this island last year on our cruise with Mum and Dad, for Dad’s 80th Birthday. When I saw a bargain on the internet I couldn’t resist. We will be right on the volcanic Perissa beach, so I will certainly get to gaze at the magnificent waters again. Then in August we have booked a camping trip! Nellie can hardly contain herself and is really excited about taking us to Devon where Hayden will enter his first surf life saving competition in the sea. It is always good to have something to look forward to, don’t you think? For now it is work and sorting the house and garden out. There is quite a bit to do. Search for the next generation of ‘Young Naturalists’ begins A new scheme to inspire and support young people keen on nature has been established with the support of the Cameron Bespolka Trust. Young Naturalists is a new project for young people aged 13 – 17 with a passion for wildlife and conservation. It builds upon the success of a short-term pilot at the Wildlife Trust’s Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve in Ringwood, on the edge of the New Forest. Sessions will take place on the last Sunday of each month, and will include a mixture of activities to help teenagers find out more about nature, and potentially inspiring them to pursue a career in conservation if that is their interest. Tasks include practical conservation and habitat management, improving wildlife identification skills, and species surveys and monitoring. This also gives young naturalists the opportunity to meet others with shared interest, make new friends, and spend time with local wildlife experts The project has been made possible with the generous support of the Cameron Bespolka Trust. Cameron was a keen, active birder and naturalist who tragically died in an accident in 2013 at the age of 16. The Cameron Bespolka Trust was
established in his memory to support the many different causes close to his heart. The Trust is proud to work with the Cameron Bespolka Trust to offer exciting opportunities for young people who share Cameron’s passion for nature. Corinne Bespolka, of the Cameron Bespolka Trust, said: “Cameron loved everything about nature from a very young age. As he grew, his passion grew with him and although birding became his main focus, he was a naturalist through and through. We have set up a Trust in his name and are delighted to be working with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust to sponsor the Young Naturalists programme. A wonderful way to honour his memory, is to help other teenagers explore nature and enter a world that can be part of their future.” Tracy Standish, Wildlife Trust Young Naturalist leader, said: “It’s really exciting to work with the Cameron Bespolka Trust to develop a project that gives young people the chance to socialise with likeminded peers and engage with nature at an important time, when they’ve outgrown children’s activities and are thinking about their future studies or careers. I T’S ALL CHILDS P LAY Stick Tricks
Inspiration comes in mysterious ways as I discovered whilst out walking the dog. I was mulling over fun things for children and families to do in March, when my Collie cross paused for the umpteenth time, to sniff something interesting, a stick no less! This got me thinking about all the amazing things that you can do with twigs and sticks, a great focus for a damp or cold March day! Collecting sticks is a serious business. Whether you fall into the camp of finding the stick first and letting this inspire what you make or set your hopes on making something, be it a paint brush or a bow, and then search for the ideal stick, is a matter of mood or taste. What’s clear is that a stick is not just a stick but depending upon its shape, girth, flexibility and smoothness, can be crafted into a quirky pencil complete with knots, a dead straight arrow or springy curved bow. The Stick Book by Schofield and Danks does exactly what it says on the tin, offering ‘loads of things to make or do with a stick’ Packed full of fun ideas for bringing sticks to life it is a great starting point for a wealth of projects from stick and mud people to den building, nest making to kites. It may even get you thinking about a favourite childhood game with sticks, surely pooh sticks would have to feature somewhere?! With so many childhood toys one dimensional and little more than passive entertainment, a stick is fundamentally different as in the hands of different children, different environments and different times and moods it can become the perfect accompaniment to exploring a puddle, a magic wand, wizards staff, shadow clock or camping stove. If this has rekindled your fire and you can’t wait to get stuck in, here are some great ideas to try this month. Artistic Sticks Sticks lend themselves to creating a wealth of artistic materials from paintbrushes complete with feather or moss tips, to paint palettes, ink pens to charcoal. What’s more paper and paint aren’t essential with the floor as your canvas and natural colouring from berries or mud. Adventure Sticks Sticks and survival are a marriage in heaven. Pick a long straight green hazel or willow stem for a strong and supple bow and whittle the end of shorter pieces
for arrows. Find a Y-shaped twig for the perfect catapult or a long snarled and wizened stick for a staff. Make spears and swords complete with carving for make believe play or a tripod for alfresco cooking. Creative Sticks Pliable sticks are great for weaving into nests, sculptures or crowns while dried out elder wood is perfect for cutting into beadlike pieces to be hollowed out with a braddle or skewer before threading on string. A mix of mud and sticks are great for making animal sculptures or creating spooky tree trunk faces. Combine with acorns and other seedpods to create mini animals. Story Sticks Use four sticks to create a frame on the floor and add some natural treasures to weave into a story or play a storyboard guessing game. Go on a woodland walk armed with a stick and some elastic bands for collecting fallen items, such as feathers and leaves to act as a memory prompt. Or make spellings or word games fun by picking a special stick to point with! Sticks are great but why stop there when there’s all of nature’s rich store cupboard to raid? Silver birch tree bark makes a wonderfully unusual cover for a notebook and instead of deadheading roses and other flowers in winter, cut them long enough to use as natural paintbrushes instead! What better way of prompting a trip to the beach than shell foraging to make pretty candles with at home? Or if a woodland trip is planned, collect acorn shells for some super cute floating candles! Other favourites include fairy houses, leaf inspired art and a host of stone decorating projects, from owls to dominos and game counters! Some folks drive a lot for various reasons be it business or personal, here a few tip to help cut the cost of travel. • Free tank of fuel via extreme couponing trick If you’re planning a big spend at any one of 50+ retailers (including House of Fraser, Homebase and PC World), buy the gift card in Morrisons and you get 1p/litre off fuel per £10 spend. So £100 gets 10p off and £1,000ish gets a free tank. The real trick isn’t to use them as gifts, but that if you’re planning a big purchase in that store anyway, first pop into Morrisons and buy the gift card. Then a few days later, once it’s active, go and use it to buy your planned purchase, giving you a potentially whopping petrol discount. Tastes so good...
SMOKEY BACON AND TOMATO PASTA
This recipe is perfect if you want something that is not time consuming but also tastes very nice. You can serve this dish with garlic bread or without and also have the option to top it off with grated cheese or parmesan.
Ingredients 400g of spaghetti 120g of smoked bacon (cut into cubes) 1 onion, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 1 400g can of chopped tomatoes 500g of passata 1 tbsp. olive oil 2 tsp smoked paprika Grated cheese or Parmesan (optional)
Equipment: Large pan, non-stick frying pan Method: Fill the large pan with water (adding a pinch of salt) and bring to the boil. Then cook the spaghetti following any instructions on the packet. Keep checking throughout and turn down the heat when cooked. While you leave that to boil, heat the oil in the frying pan and cook the bacon. Do this for just under 4 minutes until the bacon is crisp. Then add the onion and cook until crisp again for 3-4 minutes before adding the garlic and the smoked paprika. Stir together well. Then pour in the chopped tomatoes and passata, bring to the boil for 5 minutes until the mixture thickens. Make sure to stir often to avoid anything sticking to the bottom of the frying pan. Then drain the pasta before putting it back in the large pan and adding the tomato and bacon mixture. Stir the mixture and the spaghetti together. Finally, serve by adding either grated parmesan or cheese on top depending on your preference.

All-New Jaguar XF
By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk The first words out of my mouth when I handed my all-new Jaguar XF demonstrator keys back at Pamplona Airport were “I’m going to miss that motor”. And there’s a reason for that: the fresh British saloon I had on test in Spain made my life far more relaxing than I had envisaged. Now, let me make it clear; the two days I had with the XF involved traversing snaking roads high into the Pyrenees, hammering along fast stretches of motorway and negotiating narrow urban streets. The part of northern Spain I was in involves rural transport, too – and, with that, the odd wandering herd of cows, goats and sheep. My point is that, whether driving at 70mph or sat still waiting for a shamble of sheep to move, the XF looks after you. The soft leather seats, the hushed cabin, the excellent brakes and, even the sound system, make you feel as though a palace has been given four wheels. When there is a chance to bury your right foot into the deep carpet, the creamy smooth powertrain of the rear wheel drive Jaguar XF 380PS S, on test here, pulls the scenery by the side of your head briskly. It is done in such an uncomplicated way that the speedo needle can nudge three figures all too easily. Pure performance aside, handling is stunningly good. Indeed, the 2016 XF offers the fun already available from the Jaguar XJ, mainly due to its precise steering, lack of body roll and excellent traction. This was demonstrated perfectly when we stopped off for a bit of cheeky track driving at the Circuito de Navarra. This modern motorsport race track, near Los Arcos, is a 3.933 km permanent road course that hosts the Superleague Formula series and the FIA GT1 World Championship. Under expert instruction I managed to get the XF to behave like the beast it can be. The car will hold on to the surface like Velcro, only stepping out when pushed to levels you’d never attempt on a public highway. Jaguar’s PR team did a good job by really showing us that the new XF isn’t just a mile muncher –
it’s a machine offering pure dynamism. In other words, it truly is a driver’s car. The specification levels of the new XF are lavish. The cabin is a seamless blend of contemporary luxury materials and finishes, traditional Jaguar craftsmanship and state-of-the art tech, with features such as a reconfigurable 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster, laser head-up display and an InControl Touch Pro premium infotainment system. What’s more, stereo camera technology enables autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane-keep assist systems. Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist takes the stress out of motorway driving in stop-go traffic by tracking the vehicle in front, at a safe distance. With its plethora of talents and refreshed, more modern exterior, the XF is soon etched on your mind. From a distance, there are slight hints of Audi at the rear, but the car doesn’t look as much like the other premium executive saloons you see double-parked outside Michelin-starred restaurants in Chelsea or in City of London corporate car parks In summary, this new XF is loaded with a host of awesome tech, making the driving experience as luxurious and as exciting as possible. The Jaguar’s cabin is sophisticated and sturdily built and the car is rapid, whichever model you opt for. Indeed, the Jaguar XF 380PS S model, driven for this review, is as fast as you are ever likely to need.

The Adventures of Nellie
The Hampshire Publications Camper Van Well, can you believe it but I have never driven Nellie! She has been a part of the family for three and a half years, and I have never sat in the driver’s seat. I am not usually a nervous driver and will get in any car to drive off with no worries at all. For some reason I have not reached to take the wheel and Stephen has done all the driving. Nellie is an old Japanese, ‘automatic’ girl and everything is backwards to what I know. Watching Stephen pull this lever, push that button and generally not drive anything like I drive my little Citroen (mind you, has anyone seen me on the road?) had put me right off. I decided I was not to be beaten, and that I would finally sit in the driver’s seat and Nellie and I would drive off into the sunset together. So off we set for a car park just outside of Brockenhurst... to practice. I was nervous I can tell you. I felt like I was going to an exam that I was totally unprepared for. Ever had that feeling? Hayden in the back was not much better, asking if I really wanted to do this? Some vote of confi dence that was.
Debbie in the driving seat! So we arrived. Stephen got out and ceremoniously handed me the keys. I got down from my safe, highly respectable passenger’s seat and moved over.... to the driver’s seat. The first thing I needed to do was adjust the leg space as I was a foot short of the pedals. Not very helpful. I pulled the lever and lurched forward at speed, nearly shooting myself through the windscreen. It was not the best start and Hayden found it highly amusing, bursting into laughter. I think it was nervous hysteria at this point. Stephen just stood there, smiling calmly, while I tried to not look too embarrassed. Head held high in the air of course. So, the window washers are on the left not the right, the lights and indicators on the right not the left, there is no handbrake, no

23 clutch and no gears. Easy, what was I worried about? It isn’t that different... Then there is the question of the brakes which have to be coordinated with the position of the parking, driving and reversing lever. Oh what was I doing? Well I managed to move forward, slowly. I even managed to turn big old Nellie around and drive onto the small road but to my dismay it was cordoned off a little further down. Now I had to reverse into someone’s driveway. Suddenly a car appeared wanting to get into the very same driveway! It really is a wonder I am here to tell the tale at all. Carefully and calmly (well sort of) I did it! I reversed with not a damaged daffodil in sight, and we started moving forward again. I got back to the safe haven of the car park and stopped. Two horses were looking at me in a quizzical sort of way, wondering what all the fuss was about. I breathed a sigh of relief and asked Hayden if he was ok in the back. There was

Bemused horses look on... somewhat of a hesitation before a weak voice replied, “Er, yes...” I wasn’t convinced and I think Nellie was feeling the strain too. Not to be put off I said I would drive us into the village and we could have lunch there. Stephen continued to smile (I think it was a fixed grin to get him through the moment) and agreed. We did arrive safely, all in one piece, and I have to say the coffee at the Buttery was just what I needed. Stephen too I think. I drove all the way home and despite stalling whilst turning a corner, where I managed to park next to the pavement and get poor old Nellie started again, it was an almost perfect drive. Hayden gave me a big cheer once I stopped the engine. I think he found the whole experience more scary than the ghost train at the fayre! So now I am a fully trained “Nellie driver” and it will be me who drives us to our next destination. Where will that be...? By Debbie Corney

New Forest Arts Society The New Forest Art Society held its Annual General Meeting in February, along with a mini exhibition and a social gathering for all members. Reflecting over the last year the Society has built on its solid base of the past 51 years and is rising to the challenges of staying forward looking and providing a programme that responds to the needs of members. The Society prides itself on being inclusive and welcoming to new members and visitors. The meetings over the last year have seen artists demonstrating their skills over a wide genre of styles/media. The coming years programme is just as exciting including life drawing, animal studies in a loose style or pastels, landscapes in oil, framing and presentation session and critique of members’ work. There are day workshops open to members and non-members and planned visits to galleries.
The Summer Exhibition will be held in August as usual and a two day Art Sale in October. The programme of monthly meetings (third Wednesday of most months 7.30 – 9.30pm), workshops and exhibitions are on the Society’s website www.newforestartsociety.weebly.com and the Society’s notice board in the Lyndhurst Community Centre, where meetings/exhibitions take place. The meeting on 16th March is Jamel Akib demonstrating capturing movement in a variety of subjects. Annual membership is £22 and young persons (16-25 years) can join with a 25% reduction on membership fee. The Society welcomes new members and visitors attending evening meetings for a small entry fee (£4). The website has a contact form for all enquires or ring the Society’s secretary on 023 8028 3670. On Your Plot Getting the upper hand Spring should really be on its way by the end of this month and there’ll be plenty of jobs to keep you busy on your plot. There’s nothing quite like sowing seeds and the thrill of watching those first tiny seedlings appearing just a week or two later. Weather permitting the soil should be warm enough to be sowing outdoors in March. Your new seedlings will need all the help that you can give them if they are to flourish so don’t forget the weeding and pest control too!
Jobs for March :-
• Prepare beds for sowing by raking level when the soil is dry enough. • Get a supply of containers and fill with compost ready for sowing (supermarket plastic trays containers are handy to reuse for this!) • Make sure you have all the seeds you need and sort them into the order that you’ll sow them in. • Plant first early potatoes later in the month. • Keep on top of the weeding and pest control. • Sow carrots, peas, parsnips, lettuce and radishes
There’s no doubt that the weather during the first part of the year lived up to our expectations of a month of extremes - with mild temperatures and homes and gardens hammered by incredible rainfall. Hopefully March should see the weather settling down and Spring truly starting to emerge. Most seed packets give you some guidelines as to which month/or months are best to sow in but personally I think that it’d be a lot more helpful if they gave a little information about the temperature required, not to mention just how long germination is likely to take. Soil temperatures of at least 6°C are needed for most seeds - if you don’t want to guess at this you can get a soil thermometer to check. Don’t forget that by using products such as fleece, or cloches, over your beds you can raise the temperature. Some seeds, such as parsnips, are notoriously slow to germinate taking up to 3 weeks for seedlings to appear - a good idea with slow starters like these is to sow quick growing crops such as radishes on either side of the row. This will
help mark the rows out until your parsnips appear and the radishes will quickly be grown and ready to harvest. Take note also of the depth that the different seeds should be sown at - too shallow and they’ll either blow away or be eaten by the birds, too deep and you may bury them alive! Try to space seeds evenly, though if you sow too many you can thin out the weaker seedlings after they appear. Do remember that with many crops it is better to sow just a few and then sow again in a few weeks time to avoid having too many ready to harvest all at once. Salad crops such as lettuce will bolt if left too long, and other vegetables which may have a short harvesting period can be enjoyed for much longer if you save the seed and sow a few in succession every few weeks. As the soil warms up for your new crops so it also warms up nicely for the weeds about now! For many people part of the attraction of growing your own is eating chemical free produce and organic methods of pest control will therefore be preferred. Little and often is best - take a quick walk around the veg patch each morning and hand pick any emerging weeds. Hoeing also works well and if you are careful not to let weeds set seed you’ll avoid a long-term problem. Of course the situation isn’t helped by the fact that your patch is likely to have large amounts of bare soil on it between widely spaced rows at this time of year. Some crops, such as potatoes will obligingly grow to ultimately block out the light and deter weeds, but if you’re really having problems then think about putting down a thick, organic, mulch to cover the bare soil. Slugs will also emerge to attack your young seedlings - there’s no end of organic ways to do battle from hand picking at night and beer traps to watering in nematodes. Strike early and gain the upper hand!
